Good for all those tiny details.......2000-05-10

If you are a designer, or a student of design, and your teachers recommend that you obtain Architectural Standards, well don't bother. This gathers all the best details from the Standards, and makes them available in a comprehensive paperback. (That is portable in a backpack, and considerably lighter than the Standards, as well as much cheaper, and that's the bottom line, isn't it?) Full of information about the size and shape of everything from a writing desk to a city bus, this work is essential to make accurate designs for the stage. This work leaves out all the less used info in the Standards, and if you are an absolute purist, (Or an architect,) then Architectural stndards is what you want, but for the rest of us, who don't need to know the specifics, but are hung up on the details, then this is an indispensable resource.

The Best book in my library.......2002-10-30

Are you an Architect and don't know the parts of a traditional double hung window? Forgot how stone was detailed? Could not draw a lug window sill to save your life? Then this book is for you and your staff. Great drawings (real drawings, not CADD), all hand lettered and illustrated. I use this book to size masonry fireplaces. It is the ultimate resource on all types of wood burning fireplaces and masonry dimensioning! Although there are some things that are out of date (plumbing & electrical)this book tells a story about buildings in the emerging market of historic rehab and historic tax credit project.

Inspirational!.......2001-04-12

As an established commercial airbrush artist, just beginning to dabble in watercolor fine art I found "Splash 6" very inspiring. It has opened my eyes to the amazing potential of watercolors and I highly recommend this book to fellow artists and lovers of fine art.

Changed my mind..........2001-02-07

My first impression of this newest Splash was "Wow!" I was impressed by the sheer gamut of paintings from super-realistic to abstract. I found the abstract selections particularly appealing and useful.

But at second glance, I was not convinced this would help my painting enough to justify keeping the book. I think I got more out of Jeanne Carbonetti's books (Tao, Zen, Yoga of ...series) and of Watercolor Bold and Free.

So, if you want a good selection of examples of art focusing on the use of texture, this is a good selection. If you have a wide library of watercolor books already, this may not be anything really that new.

Splash 6.......2000-08-28

I was given this book just two weeks ago, but have already been through it several times. As its title suggests, it does indeed focus on depicting texture in watercolors, but I kept forgetting that as I turned each page and was stunned by the incredible artwork. I liked this book the most because of the diversity of paintings included. It has examples of serious, whimsical, traditional, avant-garde, representational, abstract... You name it! It helped open up my mind as to what watercolor could be.

The only negative thing I have to say is that I feel a little intimdiated about picking up my brush again. I was telling my watercolor teacher that I know I can never be as good as these artists. She said, "Yeah, when I saw this book, I thought, 'Why bother?'" But she is picking up her brush again as I am, and we have a wealth of new ideas and techniques to try out.

My nine-year-old niece was even impressed with this book!

Passionate book by a passionate fan.......2006-01-07

This is a good read, and certainly recommended for anyone who wants to understand the history and present 'state' of hip hop. It's also a decidedly entertaining read (for the most part) because it's a personal account: part autobiography, part history, part previously published articles from The Source, the influential hip hop magazine whose editor the author was for a number of key years during the 1990s. I think the book's main challenges are its somewhat narrow view of hip hop as the defining cultural trajectory of a generation, and the 'moral' force ascribed to it as a result. While I may agree with the author's taste in hip hop (he's more of a Tribe Called Quest/Fugees guy rather than a gangsta appreciator...) this is a limited take on what the music is, and should be. Another thing to be aware of here is that this is a 'grown up' fan's appreciation and not an authoritative history (and it doesn't claim to be). It's good - it'll make you think about hip hop as a cultural phenomenon. Just don't expect to agree with everything he says.

Selwyn Seyfu Hinds, Gunshots in my Cook-Up is a gripping and compelling account of hip hop-the music, the business aspect,and the family and societal life of its aspirants. Hinds is indeed a great storyteller. His narrative of hip hop encounters and his personal life is reminiscent of the Black Griots of antiquity. Gunshots in my Cook-Up is a must read,not only for the hip hop generation,but for all age groups.

if you know him from way back in his village voice and source days you know that few writers can touch selwyn seyfu hinds when it comes to honest and intelligent thought on hip-hop, and culture in general. this book is easily the best thing on hip-hop i've ever read, and is one of the best books i've read this year

I am a 25-year-old Bronx Native currently residing in Upstate, New York. I graduated from the University at Albany in Albany, New York in 2001 with my Bachelors of Arts in Sociology. I than went on to pursue my career in the Human Service fields. Throughout my career, I have dealt with persons that suffered from homelessness, mental illness, and substance abuse. Despite the obvious stressors, believe it or not, they all dealt with a broken heart. Some have actually attributed their situations based on relationships that had gone bad; hence, equaling a broken heart. This book was designed to be an acting agent of foreshadows. I figured if one could see what was to come before it came, they could take preventive measures to prevent the trauma of heartache. Writing from a woman's perspective, I wanted to help women embrace their womanhood and finally be able to put themselves first. For so long we see the "super woman" that works, cooks, cleans, and tends to the children. She tends to get so focused on doing things to appease everyone else, that she forgets to do basic things for herself. Slowly but surely she tends to slip into a stage of depression without even realizing it. What's worst than a woman who feels like she has but aside her goals, hopes and dreams to make her family a stronger unit? Hence, she comes home one day, and realizes that house is no longer a home. What I wanted to draw out of this book is a sense of empowerment and remembrance of the "Women's Movement". Sometimes as women we get so caught with a man that we forget what it means to be a woman. We forget that a healthy relationship consist of two persons trying to come to some type of medium. Not one person trying to come to some type of medium. When everything is said and done, and the last page of this book is read, I want women to walk away with a sense of empowerment and remembrance of what it is to be a woman.

Ms. Lawson is courageous for sharing her experience with readers who may have gone through similar situations. Her insight on the subject of dating and its pitfalls are on point. The passion she puts into her writing makes this an excellent read. Especially liked the self evaluation section which can be applied to a number of life's scenarios. Recommended for ages 14 and older.

Political Arrogance Spins Out of Control.......2006-04-24

This is an extended academic treatise on the detail of diplomatic and political intrigue in the months immediately preceeding the Franco-Prussian war. Most notable were Prince Willam (Wilhelm) for his sanity; Napolean III for his inability to stay ahead of Gramont; Gramont himself for his arrogant assumptions about the nature of reality and the amount of control he could exert on events; and Bismark for his opportunism in turning Gramont's monumental stupidity into political advantage.

This is an interesting look at all that is now known about "behind the scenes," and may change one's views of who did what with what to whom. Whether or not intended, Mr. Wetzel also did an excellent job of demonstrating how easily events can overtake political leaders. A pity American leaders are not required to have truly extensive backgrounds in history. We might have avoided some disasterous wars, including Viet Nam and the current Iraq war, neither of which went "according to plan."

Short but informative.......2006-02-25

David Wetzel writes a concise essay on the events which brought about the Franco-Prussian War. The question of succession of the Spanish Throne turned into the events which start a domino effect which would not end until 1945.

Wetzel examines the major players and how their activities brought about the war, specifically Bismarck, Kaiser Wilhelm and Napoleon III. Wetzel is evenhanded in his analysis of the events of the events, but fails to delve very deep into the factors which caused the conflict. A more in-depth work would provide a better understanding for readers. Despite the brevity, Wetzel produces a well written work which explains why the Franco-Prussian War occurred.

The diplomacy before the Franco-Prussian War of 1870........2003-03-17

A nice little read of the diplomacy of Bismarck and Napoleon III prior to the Franco Prussian War. What is so apparrent by this book is how the French and the French government were so arrogant about their power. Most people subscribe to the fact of Bismarck causing the war. However this book shows how the inflamed opinion of the French and their government led to the war. Popular opinion blames the Prussians but it was the French who caused the war.
Wetzel shows the French interfering in the affairs of the Spain to place their candidate on the throne. The Spanish provisional government was not especially interested in their candidates, and ultimately decided on a Prussian prince. This was even more unacceptable to the French government. They then demanded the Prussian prince to renounce the throne. This the Prussians did. Then they demanded the Prussians apologize for their actions and completely renounce any interest. When this did not happen, they went to war against a German nation angered by the French actions. Subsequent actions paint the French as the victims when the opposite was the case. The French played into the hands of Bismarck.
A great read for those interested in the diplomacy prior to the war. Michael Howard's Franco-Prussian War is also a great read of the war itself.

Franco Chauvinism and Prussian Power.......2002-04-24

The title of this detailed account of the origin of the FrancoPrussian war in 1870 refers to Louis Napoleon 3, nephew of Napoleon, and Otto Bismarck. The FrancoPrussian War ended the government of Emperor Louis Napoleon 3 and gave Bismarck the opportunity to unify Germany.

Wetzel begins his book by describing the characters. There is the French Emperor Louis Napoleon and his diplomats Ollivier, Gramont. Their Prussian opponents are chancellor Bismarck, and Kaiser William and their subordinates. Then Wetzel explains the background, the decline of French power and the rising strength of Prussia. We see how Ollivier, Gramont and Empress Eugenie let their passions and nationalist chauvinism blind them to the new weakness of the French army and the growing strength of Prussia

Wetzel explains the complicated succession struggle in Spain. No candidate could hope to win without total permission of France. Wetzel analyzes Bismarck's complex policy toward the succession and France and comes to some non traditional conclusions.
Wetzel follows the actions of Bismarck and Napoleon 3, as well as the actions and mistakes of their individual subordinates. We see the expertise of French diplomats such as Visconti-Venesto and Benedetti. Most of all we see the belligerence of Gramont, who left no mistake untried.

This book is not always easy to read, since Wetzel goes into great detail about the actions of all the diplomats involved. Wetzel bases his book on both primary and secondary sources and includes an informative bibliography with notes. This book ends right before the outbreak of the FrancoPrussian war, so there are no discussions of military strategy or tactics.

A fine book to understand the origins of the war.......2002-02-26
