Customer Reviews:
Beautiful book.......2007-01-03
Tropical Style is a beautiful book that is a pleasure to read and to have close to hand on a living room table. With plenty of pictures -some on exquisite details- the glossy pages invite the reader into Malaysia architecture and decoration. The vibrant use of colors and lights, and the warmth of the exotic wood play with the modern inspiration and the garden luxuriance. The purity of the lines as well as the mix of West/East inspiration brings an original elegance to the Malaysian houses. Simple and delicate at the same time, the Malaysian style is worth the attention it gets on this book. To buy for yourself or to offer.
Showcasing thirty-five awe inspiring indigenous and cross-cultural building and room interiors.......2006-05-22
Tropical Style: Contemporary Dream Houses In Malaysia by Gillian Beal (an expert in vernacular architecture) with photographs by Jacob Termansen and Pia Marie Molbech, is an impressive collection of superbly produced photography vividly illustrating the interior designs of contemporary Malaysian homes and resorts. Showcasing thirty-five awe inspiring indigenous and cross-cultural building and room interiors, Tropical Style offers readers an armchair traveler's visit to Kuala Lumpur, coastal, and island beach retreats of Malaysia. A welcome addition to personal and professional Interior Design reference collections, Tropical Style is very strongly recommended as an expansive collection of what Malaysian and Southeast Asian homes have to offer by way of interior designs and beautiful living.
Fine book- Should be called Malaysia Style.......2003-03-08
Despite the somewhat plain cover, the rest of the book features colorful and interesting interiors of private residences and hotels. While the title says "Tropical Style," the book focuses almost exclusively on properties in Malaysia. Clearly the companion book to Island Style, I would rate this book slightly lower only because I enjoy more pictures of exteriors.
Book Description
This publication presents a selection of wood-based works from the collection of Robert Bohlen, one of the finest and most thorough collectors of wood art. The artistic progress of the medium is analyzed by a wide array of essays.
Book Description
The second book in the Boston Mills Press Masters of Railroad Photography series presents the work of J. Parker Lamb -- from heart-stopping pans of Gulf, Mobile & Ohio FAs loping through the backwoods of Mississippi, to dramatic images of Missabi Road 2-8-8-4s slogging through the rain in their eleventh hour, and artful time exposures of slant-nosed Seaboard Es in the North Carolina night. Lamb is one of America's most talented and respected railroad photographers. His remarkable images have recorded early diesels in Alabama, Mississippi and the Carolinas, the end of steam in the American Midwest, and contemporary railroading from his home state of Texas to New England, California and Canada.

Steel Wheels Rolling: Chapter 2, The Dawn of Diesel
It was during a visit to the Boligee depot that I first encountered a locomotive of a different kind. The shiny, green and white Southern streamliner that called on Boligee that memorable 1939 day didn't smoke like regular engines. In fact, the shovel-nosed motor car and trailer assigned to the Meridian-Birmingham Vulcan was like nothing I'd seen before...The mysterious newcomer was the subject of great interest and prompted considerable discussion. My father's words that day echo still. "Son, someday all locomotives may be like this one."

Those Fabulous Steam Engines Are a Sight to See........2005-12-13
Today there are more than one hundred restored steam-powered trains on the tracks ready to satisfy the kid in all of us. As a child, I took the annual train trip to Washington, D.C. from Knoxvillle, Tennessee, for granted. Now, part of the current interest in 'riding the rails' is nostalgia for the old days when time moved slower and there was no hurry to get somewhere. On my trips, there really wasn't much to see except clothes hanging on the lines in backyards, until you reached a Virginia historic town and as you glide through the town, some marvelous building could be seen. Usually, I chose to travel at night.
One of the joys of an overnight train trip is the brilliant night sky, dense with twinkling stars and roaming satellites miles above (keeping watch). Much more can be seen when the city lights fade in the distance for vast stretches between towns. Riding the train is only part of the experience. Many train stations have been turned into museums, where memories and memorabilia of a bygone era of railway travel are stored. At the Southern Railway station, where my trips departed, there are some restored passenger cars on the premises replenished as a historic museum with actual things used back then. It has been lovingly collected and fitted for the train passenger of the past to re-live the things they took for granted. Nothing lasts forever. Parker Lamb tells how he loved to hang around the railroad yards in his Mississippi hometown as a child. In the third grade at John Sevier School, I sold most of my Girl Scout cookies to the men at the Roundhouse down the hill from the school. He says, "Children like the machines, and they like big things. Steam engines make lots of noise. They're hot and even a bit scary. For a kid, they're even better than fire trucks."
Trains still carry passengers from depot to depot, though not like in the Fifties and earlier, just as they did in their heyday. Amtrack is the only long distance carrier at present. This book shows in pictures and text the mass transit history of America before cars took over. The diesel engine shown on the cover became popular and quicker, but now for a short run, the steam engine has reappeared in its glory. In Knoxville, we have the Rambler to take tourists to the place where the three rivers converge to turn into the Tennessee River, just a few miles out of town. Last year, due to the popular movie, 'The Polar Express' they took advantage of the concept and added special Christmas-time excursions with that theme. A popular newsman is this year's host to read parts of the book to the children who think they are in a movie -- before he 'moves up' to the Atlanta t.v. market. Farewell, Ted Hall! Kids love the noise and the sideways rolling of the cars on the rumbling wheels along the track. That shrill (too loud) train whistle continues throughout the return trip to advertise that the train is running today. The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad offers excursions through the western North Carolina section of the National Park.
Parker Lamb, the author and photographer of this book says it all, "There is something special and timeless about trains." He is a retired professor at the University of Texas at Austin, has been writing about trains since 1960 and taking pictures of them since 1949. He followed up this one with CLASSIC DIESELS OF THE SOUTH (2003). Earlier he wrote PERFECTING THE AMERICAN STEAM LOCOMOTIVE and KATY DIESELS TO THE GULF. My dad was a railroad man, so I think he would no doubt agree that they are special in many ways, not just nostalgia.
A gorgeous showcase of exceptional railroad photography.......2002-05-07
The second volume in the Boston Mills Press "Masters of Railroad Photography", Steel Wheels Rolling: A Personal Journey Of Railroad Photography by railroading expert and photographer J. Parker Lamp is a simply fascinating collection of black-and-white photographs of railroad successes over the course of five decades. From pictures of the last of the American Midwest steam engines through the arrival of the diesel engine and much more, Steel Wheels Rolling captures mass transit history in America in unforgettable impressions. Very brief text captions round out this gorgeous showcase of exceptional railroad photography. Also very highly recommended is the first titles in the "Masters of Railroad Photography" series, Ted Benson's One Track Mind: Photographic Essays On Western Railroading...

Customer Reviews:
The Citrus Baron.......2007-08-17
The Cantrell family has a colorful legacy. Daniel Cantrell was a hard man. His life and love was in his groves. His family was merely seen as individuals who could work the land or take care of his house. In all Dan had ten children and three wives. His first wife died in childbirth, his second left him after years of horrible abuse, and the third got her revenge. The children, grandchildren, and extended family of Daniel Cantrell lived very interesting lives. Some followed almost directly in the footsteps of Dan while others spent their lives trying to live his legacy down.
For me, The Citrus Baron was one of those guilty pleasures. The book read like a soap opera and I quickly found myself immersed in the drama of the Cantrell clan. The story has a lot of characters, each with their own well developed story that relates to the main action. Normally, I have problems keeping individual's straight when the storyline involves so many characters. However, that never seemed to be an issue with The Citrus Baron. I think that each person's story was so interesting in and of itself that I took in the information without any problems. I think that each situation also related extremely well back to Dan Cantrell. I could see how the actions and interactions rippled through each life and each generation.
Pick up this book, find a nice quiet spot, and get lost in the lives, loves, and losses of the Cantrell family.
A Family Saga.......2007-04-28
The Citrus Baron chronicles the lives of a Florida family through several generations. Their trials, sins, hopes, and loves are told in such a way that the reader feels an identity with the people, as if they were kin. Kingsley intwines the characters like the threads of a blanket. The whole, when finished, gives us warmth, a comfortable feeling that despite life's ups and downs, families prevail.
Florida Today: LA Davis review.......2007-03-28
Carolyn kingsley, a resident of Edgewater who grew up in Titusville, has written a book called 'The citrus Baron.'
I've read an excerpt from the book and wanted to read more. It begins in the early 1900s and goes to the space age.
The book's main character is Hoyt Cantrell, one of 10 children whose father has "the finest groves in the central area of the state," said Kingsley, who is a feature writer for publications in Florida and South Carolina.
The book, published by Xlibris Corporation, follows the joys and tragedies of a couple of central characters from different generations of the family, as they fall in and out of love, but always find happiness in their Central Florida roots.
Book Description
The 'storm troopers' of the Luftwaffe, the elite Strumgruppen units comprised the most heavily armed and armoured fighter interceptors ever produced by the Germans. Their role was to smash like a mighty fist through the massed ranks of USAAF daylight bombers. Only volunteers could serve with these elite units, and each pilot was trained to close with the enemy and engage him in extremely short-range combat, attacking from the front and the rear in tight arrowhead formations. In exceptional circumstances pilots would even ram their enemy. This book chronicles the brief, but violent, career of the Sturmgruppen during the dark days of 1944-45, employing first-hand accounts and rare archival photography.
Customer Reviews:
informative and well writen.......2006-07-07
I found this book provided a good over view of areial combat against Alied bombers during the last years of WWII. I had not been aware of the Sturmgruppen before seeing this title.

Book Description
Containing the complete and annotated texts of six pamphlets written between 1609 and 1620, "Custome Is an Idiot" makes an invaluable contribution to the scholarship on early modern British cultural history, specifically on competing opinions about the role of women in society.
During the early seventeenth century a fierce debate raged in British intellectual society regarding the role of women, how much is ordained by God, and how much is merely custom. The pamphlets that circulated at the time reveal a great deal about the terms of the debate, and these six constitute a significant body of primary literature, allowing the contending voices to be heard anew.
Included here are two pamphlets about gossips by Samuel Rowlands, William Heale's treatise against wife-beating, Christopher Newstead's argument for the superiority of women, and Hic Mulier and Haec Vir, two pamphlets that address the theme of cross-dressing. Introductions by Susan Gushee O'Malley place each pamphlet in a wider context, and detailed annotations shed light on the individual texts.

Book Description
The GALP Regulatory Handbook is an easy-to-use manual to assist laboratories in applying the Good Automated Laboratory Practice guidelines published by the Environmental Protection Agency in 1990. The proliferation of computerized data collection has resulted in new problems of corruption, loss, and inappropriate modification in data provided to the EPA. The EPA published its GALP guidelines to aid laboratories replacing manual operations with computer technology. The eight chapters of this handbook provide a "how-to" framework for complying with those guidelines. The book looks at the extent and seriousness of those control issues for automated data collection systems, the intent of the GALPs in solving and preventing those problems, and the implementation guidelines that can help laboratory management maintain the compliance and quality that are fundamental to effective operation.
