Book Description
Lavishly illustrated with over 575 images, this best-selling survey of Western architecture is now fully revised and updated
This best-selling, illustrated survey of Western architecture is now fully revised throughout, explaining the structure, function, history, and meaning of architecture in a way that is both accessible and engaging. The long-awaited second edition includes: new coverage on Postmodernism and its relationship to the Modernist era; a reorganization of Mesopotamian and Prehistoric architecture based on thematic lines of development; an expanded chapter on Medieval architecture, including developments from the end of the Roman Empire to the Renaissance; and an expanded art program that includes over 500 images in black and white and color.
Understanding Architecture continues to be the only text in the field to examine architecture as a cultural phenomenon as well as an artistic and technological achievement with its straightforward, two-part structure: (1) The Elements of Architecture and (2) The History and Meaning of Architecture. Comprehensive, clearly written, affordable, and accessible, Understanding Architecture is a classic survey of Western architecture.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book!!!!.......2006-11-05
Excellent text of architectural history, with good information and explanations of each style in cronological order and lots of sections on examples and masters of each epoch. Lots of pictures of plans and sections! I only wish I had had it for the assignments I had to do last semester! I do wish it had more color fotos instead of black and white. Like all architecture books, it's a little too expensive, but reasonable for the comparatives I found localy. Excellent book, Highly recommended for architecture students and enthusiasts alike.
Excellent but not perfect.......2005-09-04
I'm a college instructor for beginning level Architecture Appreciation, and the Leland Roth book is an excellent choice to use for such a class. It is concise, informative and for the students, easy to read. Also, for their purposes, because the book is mostly black and white, it is rather cost efficient in an age of over-priced rip-off textbooks. The only problem with the book is that it can really stand to be updated. There is no chapter about Decontructivism or anything that followed, and the book ends with Mario Botta in 1993, which these days is antiquity already. Roth must know that his book is a gold standard for such a class. Knowing this, it is imperative that he revise it soon. it's too good of a product to stop 12 years ago.
Clear cut and Simple.......2002-09-13
Understanding Architecture is a great book. I found it to be useful to start down the road of being an Architect. This book gives you a clear understanding of the value of architecture in the world. If you have any interest at all in architecture or the built environment you will love this book. I have recommended it to numerous friends.
Understanding Architecture and Urbanism.......2000-06-19
This is a very well written approach to the understanding of Architecture and Urbanism. In the first half of the book, Roth analyzes the basic concepts or "elements" that conform today's Architecture. The second half of this clear and readable text is dedicated to the investigation of the history and significance of Architecture. These enjoyable and didactic thirteen chapters are an excellent starting point for a journey into past and present Architecture

It's a Splash!.......2000-08-26
Liz Donovin is not only a beautiful artist, she's an excellent teacher. I study watercolors exclusively, and mostly from books. Her examples and color diagrams are truly worth a thousand words each, and her text is tightly knit into lines of priceless information, insight and instruction. Liz generously shares her secrets of mastering light, texture, and color. That's just for starters. I could go on and on. My husband ordered the book as a gift for me, under the condition I take my twice borrowed, overdue copy back to the library before I put us into hock! I did return it...but it was a long farewell! Thanks Liz, and BRAVA!

Liz Donovan's understanding of color, texture, and the moods of light is remarkable. She's an excellent teacher. Her own work is beautiful and inspiring to say the least. Liz shares her tricks and secrets of detail in diagrams and pictures that truly are worth a thousand words. She's also a wizard with words, by the way, very easy to follow her.
Enjoy this master artist! This book is a joy, and my husband is making it a gift..When it arrives, the library can have their (twice borrowed/overdue) copy back...but not before! It's worth every cent! Brava, Liz Donovan!
A must have book for watercolor enthusiasts........1999-01-24
In my opinion, Liz Donovan is an outstanding watercolor artist. I love the emotion that she captures with each painting. Just looking through her book, inspires me to paint. Throughout the book she gives multiple tips on creating that perfect look. This book is a good choice for the still life artist who wants to try his/her hand at watercolor.
Wonderfull Book For Still Life Painters.......1998-10-28
This is a wonderful book. After discussing the materials and some basic watercolor techniques the following chapters provide demonstration projects to apply the techniques. Ms. Donovan's paintings are a nice balance between washy-style watercolors and hyper-realistic.
She really shines on the demonstrations of painting reflective surfaces such as silver, glass or brass and also woodgrain and marble (which was a wonderful surprise since I'd never seen marble discussed before in any other watercolor book I own).
She also discusses composition, the effect of lighting and set up of your own still lifes for maximum impact.
I have done several of the projects and plan to do all of them. My own paintings have improved since applying the concepts and techniques the book demonstrates.

Janet Malcolm takes nothing for granted. In complicated but lucid prose she sets out to change our perceptions of photographers and photography in this highly regarded volume, now in an expanded edition. She looks at Alfred Stieglitz's pioneering efforts on behalf of the medium as an art form, considers Edward Weston's "psychic journey" to Mexico, and reflects on how these men fared at the hands of recent biographers. Malcolm also examines misconceptions about Richard Avedon's fashion photography and analyzes the motives behind his often distressing celebrity portraits. In a new essay, she discusses the charges of exhibitionism leveled at the provocative work of Sally Mann.
Book Description
This expanded edition of Diana & Nikon, Janet Malcolm's first book, presents new essays that explore the last work of Diane Arbus, Sally Mann's family pictures, E.J. Bellocq's famous 1912 nudes, Andrew Bush's richly detailed interiors, and the relationship between painting and photography. The text of the original edition--long a much sought after rarity--is reprinted here in full, including essays on the works of the masters Stieglitz, Steichen, and Weston, as well as contemporaries such as Robert Frank, Irving Penn, and William Eggleston.
Malcolm offers a view of photography that is as complicated and as controversial as the medium itself. Her writings on such topics as Richard Avedon's portraits, Garry Winogrand's street photographs, and Harry Callahan's color work exhibit the elegant prose style and incisive commentary for which she is renowned. Illustrated with 100 black-and-white photographs, this is a book to read and to ponder, a sensitive and generous appraisal of where photography stands in relation to all the arts, and to its own past, by one of the leading writers of her generation.

Book Description
On June 25, 1906 an event of little public importance occurred. Fueled by popular mood and climate, and capitalized upon by the press, it became the "hottest story" of the century. Phyllis Leslie Abramson's book recreates the social, political, and economic climate; the murder; and the subsequent trial that led to the manifestation of sob sister journalism. The story was prosaic: an insanely jealous man murdered his wife's lover. The protagonists were front-page material: Stanford White, famous architect and womanizer; Harry K. Thaw, scion of an influential family; and the young and beautiful Evelyn Nesbit. Three famous newspapers chose four women journalists to provide daily doses of tear-producing reportage. The sob sisters were born. Exploring the origins of sob sister journalism, Abramson first surveys turn-of-the-century America. She includes sections on industrialization, urbanization, immigration, the political climate, women, the press, and New York City, and gives biographical sketches of the four female journalists. The trial itself encompasses the main portion of her book. Day-by-day courtroom events alternate with the sob sisters' actual newspaper coverage. The volume concludes with an analysis of the development of sob sister journalism and the impact of this new journalistic style. An appendix offers a postscript on the lives of the protagonists and the sob sisters.

ADDICTIVE STORIES, SUPERB WRITING! A VERY SURPRISING TREAT!.......2006-05-21
Because of the subject matter (a "hippie" hitchiker's adventures), I expected some entertaining stories but was not prepared for the extremely high quality of the writing.
The stories are addictive and surprisingly diverse. The prose is as polished and enjoyable as any I've ever read, with truly deep insights into human nature. I can't remember the last book I read which had not one wasted or misfired word. I can honestly say that about this book. Bryce Yarborough is a massively talented writer and a natural born storyteller.
Uptight conservatives might find his references to drug use too casual and not condemning enough, and anyone bogged down in the gross materialism of our global rat race will likely be put off by the author's gentle political correctness and mystical insights.
Aging hippies and connoisseurs of true life adventure will find plenty to love about it. Yarborough's amazing ability to recall the intricate descriptive details of his adventures brings a vivid sense of reality to them. As a result, his stories capture the feelings of both the colorful hippie vagabond lifestyle and the thrills of his wilder adventures.
There are seventeen stories in the book, and they are all meat, no filler. Night after night I was curled up in bed, eager to find out how this broke, defenseless young traveller would extricate himself from sticky, even deadly situations. The same sharp wit and zen demeanor which saved his buns in those desperate situations manifests in his writing.
If this sounds like something you might enjoy, trust me: buy it!
Rox.......2005-07-08
I must say that being a child raised in the 60's and living as a young adult in the 70's, Bryce has brought back some of my own memories. What I really enjoyed was that Bryce wrote from his heart when sharing his stories, yet, he included what he learned from other people. It takes a unique person to live a life on the road for 10 years, so many people have/had tried it, and they didn't learn, or they just didn't live. Thank you Bryce. Now let's see the screening for a movie???!!!!:)
The wildest ride of all: LIFE!.......2005-06-13
Cudos to Bryce for telling it like it is. This is a riveting account of a life of adventure. Most people can't even imagine the intense, inspiring, nerve enhancing, excitement of this kind of lifestyle. Bryce is not only a master story teller, but has a real talent for writing of his experiences in such a way that the reader can also feel the thrill, smell the danger, touch the wide-awake feeling of being totally alive, taste the ecstacy, and mostly see the insights that were hard-won by the author.
It's a shame the first reviewer seems to have missed the point all together - sure, there were drugs involved occasionally, but they were not the point; just an insignificant bit player in the overall scheme of things. This enthralling page-turner is really about one open an honest guy hitting the road, literally all over the world for a decade or more . . . why? To find himself. And he did! His insights and lessons learned have a profound ring of truth.
This book is not only a fabulous adventure - it's a collection of reasons to have goose bumps and for hair to stand on end - not just because of the close calls, but also the wisdom gleaned and so articulately shared while going full-throttle on the wildest ride of all: LIFE!
To The Point.......2005-04-21
I know "Bryce Yarborogh" and I will be honest, I thought personaly that this book would be much better, even when he discribed it to me as he was writting it I thought it was going to be great.
I was disapointed, this book seems to have a main theam Drugs, Drugs and more Drugs. Every chapter so far involves Pot, Hash or some other illegal drug. It is a commonality to every chapter he is high getting high or just got high and something happens.
I was hoping for better. The good thing is i know atleast now "bryce" is no longer doing drugs.
Present moment on the road.......2004-12-14
"Bryce masterfully tells many accounts of life on the road and the fascinating people and experiences he encounters. His creativity and real life writing instilled a renewed inspiration for me to live in each moment and see the good everywhere I go."

Book Description
The story of a small town that rose to become the most powerful empire of the ancient world has been an inspiration to generations of people. Even after the collapse of the Roman Empire, many nations and their leaders have styled themselves 'heirs of Rome', emulating its society, technology and warfare. This book details the wars that shaped the Roman Empire, from the Gallic Wars of Julius Caesar and the subsequent civil war between Caesar and Pompey which tore apart the ageing Republic, through the expansion of the early Empire to its 'decline and fall'. Contains material previously published in Essential Histories 21: ‘Rome at War’, Essential Histories 43: ‘Caesar's Gallic Wars’ and Essential Histories 42: ‘Caesar's Civil War’.

Book Description
The history of Western Christianity, written predominantly from a male perspective, has often ignored women's stories and their unique contributions to both Church and society. Unlike the virgins and martyrs who are named in the official list of the Church's saints, the beguines, Anabaptists, so-called witches, and nuns of Port-Royal have gone largely unrecognized. Their stories, as presented in this one volume, explore the underside of history and challenge support of a strictly hierarchical Church. These four groups of women represent disparate approaches to a Christian commitment, but they share an intense devotion to their understanding of the gospel message. Their willingness to adhere to their beliefs brought them into conflict with ecclesiastical and civil authority. Often, these women sacrificed their lives; all of them refuted the stereotype of a passive female Church member. These women's stories unfold within the complex picture of medieval Europe, but their beliefs and struggles offer models of Christian living relevant to today. This work will appeal to scholars of gender and women's studies, theology, and European history. The research and documentation provides information about these women previously available only in scattered and often obscure sources. Although these women represent a unique ecumenical mix of backgrounds, they share a common strength, commitment, and feminine approach to religion.
Customer Reviews:
very interesting work but a wonderful author.......2001-02-24
Dr. Conn, a interesting and knowledgeable teacher , gives a wonderful work of the women who are often lost in the study of religion. She gives form, through her words, to women whose contributions often go unnoticed throughout the study of religon and history. She gives us their true stories, not just the myths that our society uses to define them.

Book Description
Clifford algebras are at a crossing point in a variety of research areas, including abstract algebra, crystallography, projective geometry, quantum mechanics, differential geometry and analysis. For many researchers working in this field in ma- thematics and physics, computer algebra software systems have become indispensable tools in theory and applications. This edited survey book consists of 20 chapters showing application of Clifford algebra in quantum mechanics, field theory, spinor calculations, projective geometry, Hypercomplex algebra, function theory and crystallography. Many examples of computations performed with a variety of readily available software programs are presented in detail, i.e., Maple, Mathematica, Axiom, etc. A key feature of the book is that it shows how scientific knowledge can advance with the use of computational tools and software.
Customer Reviews:
Alamowicz et al.'s Clifford Algebras with Computations.......2000-04-06
This is the best book on Clifford algebra numeric and/or symbolic computations. See my review of one of the editors, P. Lounesto, under his name. The book illustrates the fact that algebras, unlike geometries, can be easily manipulated directly with computers (and Clifford algebras also are used to handle geometric physics). The editors make sure that each contribution also advances the mathematical-physical theory of Clifford algebras. Packages MATHEMATICA and MAPLE (V) and REDUCE and LUCY are prominent. Schmeikal of Vienna applies the theory to elementary particle theory, with quarks as quantized states of orientation. Gomez et al. of Mexico have fascinating applications to crystallography including "quasicrystals", metal lic alloys with non-crystallographic symmetry but sharp spotted diffraction patterns. The non-specialist should buy the book and, if necessary, hire a consultant or tutor to explain it in closer to ordinary English. Lounesto, by the way, is in Finland with the rapidly rising Finnish schools of science and mathematics.
