Book Description
Why are most designers (architectural, interior, or industrial) incapable of creating deeply satisfying bathing environments? Because the key metaphors of design--efficiency, slick modernity, overwhelming visual appeal--are antagonistic to a profound bathing experience. Extraordinary baths instead are complex and distinctly elemental--earthy, sensual, and animistic. They are created by natural geological processes or by composers of sensory arousal working in an intuitive, poetic, open-minded--undesign--manner.

Philosophy of Bathing.......2006-02-18
This is not for the intrepid house remodeler. Instead, it is for contemplation of the act of cleansing and renewal: how preparing for this act affects one's personal space: and how the bath creates and reinforces important social functions.
Reading the book requires some energy. I suggest that you read the footnotes and view the photographs as you read.
You will be exposed to ontology, epistemology, and axiology of the bath for a very reasonable price.
It is likely that your choices about plumbing will be influenced by reading Koren.
extremely interesting content.......2004-03-16
Amazing photos of inspirational bathing environments. Highly recommended for sublime musings on the ideal bath--to built or take.
Lost in the Clouds.......2003-12-29
If you are looking for any kind of practical advice, you won't find it here. The author spends half the book telling us why arhitects can't design baths. The rest of the book is spent potificating on vague notions of the bath experience. The pictures suggest the ulitimate bathing experience comes from various outdoor, earthy, natural baths. If you have a desire to create a mud-pit bath in your backyard, read this book. Otherwise, forget it.
An extraordinary collection of bathing environments.......2001-03-20
When my architect was beginning to design my new bathroom, I gave him a copy of this gem. He said it provided the inspiration for mine and every bath he's designed since. I've given copies to few other friends who were in a similar architectural process. I've received profuse thanks. If you're planning to build an unusual bath, I think this book is a must read.

improve workflow and composition analysis.......2007-09-22
The book is a must for landscape painters and, in my opinion, is worthy for every other watercolor painter.
It's plainly explained, it has a number of helpful examples and covers different subejcts you will have to work out in every kind of watercolor painting.
One of the must important is how to look trough the camera to get your subject and not just to shoot what by chance is in front of you.
Another very good point is the analysis of when and where the camera can improve your workflow helping your creativity, but never replacing it.
Last, but not least, it has a very good analysis of how to compose what you see until you are sure it really is your subject: the one.
The book has full explanation of different techniques and concerns different issues of subject composition. It's not just a series of lonely landscape of mountains and some houses, with no living being.
Don Patterson teaches you how to seamlessly integrate animals and human beings presence in to the whole meaning your subject.
The only backdraw is that the book is not the "art academy kind": it doesn't teach you a painting method and then how to apply it to landscape painting. It assumes that you are a landscape painter fully knowing what you are doing.
In that sense I higly reccommend it along with David Bellamy's "Watercolour Landscapes Course" that has more the academic style.
A keeper.......2000-07-26
Every so often, you check out a book at the library, and turn right around and buy it for yourself. This is one such book. For those of us who paint from photos, this book is a must to have. The illustrations are crisp and the steps clear and easy to follow. From thumbnail sketch to final brush stroke, Mr. Patterson demonstrates how to create a vibrant painting from a ho-hum photo, and how to combine photos for the most impact. What a find!
Watercolor Wonders.......2000-06-21
Usually, skilled people are able to just do and not explain how they do - Mr. Patterson is an exception. In great detail, this book acts as a brilliant text for anyone interested in watercolor painting from the devoted student to the those with casual interest. Beyond the "how to" aspects, Mr. Patterson has been generous enough to include several plates of his own beautiful paintings - indeed, his technique works!
Book Description
James Fee has been taking photographs for most of his life, and in the past decade he has developed a large and loyal following of critics and enthusiasts across the world of fine art photography. The nineties were a prolific decade for Fee, who has in the last ten years produced several compelling series of work, all of which are documented in this essential new monograph. Presented here are the many black and white photographs of American icons and imagery that are thematically connected by Fee's obsession with the decline and destruction of the America that he knew as a young man: we see his series of New York imagery, including the Chrysler building and the Brooklyn Bridge; pictures of the crumbling Penn State penitentiary, Beat inspired series of photographs of the American road; a distinctive and unique series of nude imagery; as well as his innovative collaborations with multimedia artist George Herms. Finally, presented here for the first time is a unique series of photographs taken on the South Pacific Island of Pelelui, a series which offers a glimpse at a long, very personal project for Fee, inspired by the photographs his father took while posted on the island during the Second World War.
Deluxe Limited Edition of 200 copies, each slipcased with at portfolio of 3 original 8 x 10 inch prints, signed and numbered by James Fee.
Hardcover, 11 x 13 inches, 175 pages, 68 color and 67 tritone illustrations.

Customer Reviews:
Fee Extraordinaire.......2007-01-11
This book by James Fee reveals the depth of this photographer's range to capture the essence of America in all her beauty, abandonment, and reverie. Fee was a remarkable photographer who unfortunately passed away in 2006, but kept shooting stunning images until the end, even while leaning on a walker and using portable oxygen.
Inspiring and transcendent in range and scope, this book is a must for anyone interested in the talent of an American original. I highly recommend it.
This book is real good.......2001-10-29
I saw work by James Fee in some galleries and it really blew off the top of my head. He's doing crazy things to an image and the results are great. The subject matter here moves from iconographic images of he US, sunken ships in Southeast Asia, to impressionistic nudes. The great thing about him is none of these images have been digitally manipulated. If you are a photographer and looking for a book to shake things up a bit, James Fee will not dissapoint. What makes this book succeed is that it's not just about the process, there is a real communication happening. I keep coming back to the book for ideas and inspiration. Owning this book will only do good things for you.
Reality Check.......2001-09-21
The images of New York are as haunting as it is today after the attack. Fee's photographs of the Statue of Liberty and NY are dark, emotional and surreal. It makes you think of a future that can easily become reality if we remain too naive to recognize our own stupidity.

Inaccurate and difficult to understanding scoring.......2004-11-23
I put this book down after the eighth test out of sheer frustration. I picked it up at my local library just for something fun to do, as I know myself pretty well through my own experiences and introspection over the years. I usually enjoy personality tests, and am even sometimes surprised at the amazing accuracy of the more famous ones, such as the Myers-Briggs. I was a bit disturbed that I was finding such inaccurate answers, at the least the ones I could even understand how to score. I scored well out of the norms on every test, which I think is odd as I am college-age myself. Out of the first eight that I took, Who Controls Your Fate was probably the most accurate, and easiest to understand scoring-wise. It's just disturbing that this is a compilation of tests from various sources, and 7 out of the 8 I took had answers that I felt were pretty far off.
The scoring was also very difficult. Some of the instructions on how to score were almost impossible to decipher, which could have led to some of my obscenely off scores. Other tests would not even define what was a "good" or "bad" score, you were left to decide on your own!
The book just seems to have been quickly thrown together with very poor explanations. I suggest finding a book that delves more into one type of personality test, such as a book on Myers-Briggs or Enneagrams.
An unfortunate waste of money.......2002-01-03
I bought this book because I thought it'd be fun and interesting, but I was wrong. There were many tests which were interesting and I didn't mind taking the time to answer the forty to sixty questions. What bothered me was when I finished answering all the questions I was left completely confused. I'd find out my score for a test, but it didn't tell me if my score was a good thing or a bad thing. Instead it showed the results of other people, which I really didn't care about. I only wanted to know about my score, which I didn't get. I hope others were able to find this book helpful because I sure didn't.
good tests, but too confusing for the "abnormal".......2001-11-26
I found this book interesting, but depressing. I think the tests in the book are great. However, the book itself does not tell how to accurately interpret unusually high or low scores, those outside of the percentiles for normal college students. Since I didn't score often in the "normal" percentile range, I had no idea how to gauge if it meant I was wonderfully unique or terribly dysfunctional. Since the author is not even sure about the meanings of some of the tests in this book, I am equally unsure. I am interested in being psychologically healthier, but not always interested in being "normal." If someone has a better approach to helping the layman interpret psychological testing I would be happy to find out about it.
I would recommend this book to someone who wants to know if they have major problems, because if you do, you will probably score way outside the percentiles. And there are a few tests that may help you see how healthy you are, if you are. The great thing is that the tests appear to be real, and the test for measuring your level of anxiety is detailed, well explained, and informative. I think the romantic love test is very accurate as well.
Needless to say, I don't think this book will help you much in overcoming your "personal barriers to a better life" like it says in the misleading subtitle. It only shows you barriers.
The first one was better!.......2001-08-13
I had bought the first book Louis Janda wrote in the personality test series: 'The Psychologist's Book of Self-Tests : 25 Love, Sex, Intelligence, Career, and Personality Tests...' and I think it was better. First of all I like the different tests in THIS book, they are pretty introspective. But I DID NOT like the way the tests were scored. It was at times hard to understand and keep tract of. I wanted to take the tests and learn the answer about myself. But even when I half figured out the scoring system and added the numbers up I couldn't tell by the scoring system whether my having a high/low score was good, or bad! I only give this a "3" instead of a "2" because they tests themselves were good, and pretty easy to take. Otherwise, if you're real good at math and have plenty of patience, you'll REALLY love this book.

Richelson Strikes again! Excellent coverage on a Great Topic!!.......2007-02-07
Dr. Jeff Richelson has provided some of the greatest reads dealing with United States military satellite systems - "America's Secret Eyes in Space", "The US Intelligence Community", and now "America's Space Sentinels." This book covers the genesis and evolution of the US' space-based missile warning system, commonly known as DSP, or defense support program. Dr. Richelson takes us through the teething of MIDAS, Program 646, and DSP's early predecessors, in addition to its successors of ALERT and SBIRS.
One high point in the text is the information on SCUD missile launches during Operation Desert Storm. While the news media reported bits and pieces on the launches, Dr. Richelson gives us a "bird's eye" view of what crews in Colorado saw half-a-world away, and what their contribution did to the defense of the US troops in the desert.
The only downside to this book is its currency - This is a volume in definite need of updating due to the bringing online of the SBIRS constellation, the battles fought during the Clinton era about space systems and emerging technologies that have DSP/SBIRS ready for the scrap-heap. If you're a military space-nut like me, this needs to be in your library.
An Important Study of a Critical Military Space Program.......2003-05-27
The Defense Satellite Program (DSP)-truly one of the most innocuous code names ever devised for a critical military program-arose in the earliest years of the space age as a means of detecting the launch of a rocket from anywhere in the world. With the development of ballistic missiles in the 1950s, for the first time in the history of the United States our two great oceans could not protect us from sustained attack and destruction. To warn against a Soviet ballistic missile attack, and thereby to allow time for the launch of a counterattack, the Department of Defense sponsored the development of satellites ringing the globe that would use infrared photographic technology to detect missile launches. The theory behind the system was that the heat signature from the rocket blast would be detected by satellites in space and then show up on infrared scopes at military monitoring posts. Through this process the time and place of launch, as well as the missile trajectory, could be ascertained within seconds of launch.
It was a brilliant concept but it took years for it to come to fruition. The first effort, Project MIDAS, experienced numerous technical problems, but finally reached a turning point in 1963 when MIDAS 7 detected the first missile launch from space. MIDAS confirmed the concept, and the DSP program, with first launch in 1970, has provided early warning of missile launches ever since. Through 1997 eighteen DSP satellites had been placed in orbit, not all of them operational of course at the same time.
Jeffrey T. Richelson's history of this program, "America's Space Sentinels," is an especially important and welcome addition to the literature of the military space program. It provides as comprehensive an understanding of this effort as is possible in the current environment, using a wealth of declassified documents to piece together this program's evolution from idea to implementation and operational life. It is, of course, not the final word on this subject because of still-classified materials that should one day be made available about DSP, but it represents a benchmark in the historiography.
Especially welcome is Richelson's discussion of DSP's employment in the post-cold war era. He provides an excellent overview of its use to detect Scud missile launches in the Gulf War of 1991. He also describes how it detected the test firing of a new Iranian missile in 1998 and its use in piecing together the details of airplane accidents, such as the September 1997 collision of American and German military aircraft off the Atlantic coast of Africa. He ends with a discussion of the follow-on missile launch detection program, the Space-Based Infrared System (SBIRS), which is due to come on line at the end of the century.
From the time when DSP served as the backbone of the nation's strategic early warning system during the cold war through its continued use in the still very threatening climate of the 1990s to its replacement by a presumably more capable system, this book is an important contribution to the public's understanding of space-based military systems. It should be required reading for all who are interested in the strategic defense of the United States in the nuclear era.
Excellent coverage of an Indispensible Satellite System.......1999-08-03
This book gives an excellent overview of America's Missile Warning satellites, beginning with MIDAS in the 1960s and ending with SBIRS for the 21st Century. The information included in the text is more in-depth that the fact sheets given out by the United States Air Force.

Book Description
The distinguished historian C. R. Boxer devoted years of research and reflection on European expansion overseas into the Americas and Asia. In The Church Militant and Iberian Expansion, 1440-1770, his analytical survey of the role of the Portuguese and Spanish missionaries of the Roman Catholic Church in the overseas expansion of the Iberian powers, he finds that the lasting results vary enormously. "They range,"he writes, "from enduring mass conversions in some regions, of which sixteenth-century New Spain is the prime example, to the total failure in other countries, such as Cambodia, where the number of indigenous converts could be counted on two hands."
Considering the church as "a human as well as a divine institution,"the author focuses on four types of organizational problems: relations between the regular and the secular clergy; the mission as a frontier institution in many climes and many cultures; the close and inseparable connection between Cross and Crown; and the role of the Inquisition overseas. Boxer finds that "the mere survival of these Christian minorities through the vicissitudes of over three centuries is a tribute to the work of the dedicated missionaries of the Church Militant in times past."
Book Description
"Every body perseveres in its state of rest or of uniform motion in a straight line, except in so far as it is compelled to change that state by impressed forces." -Issac Newton, Principia (First Law of Motion)
In other words, students in grades 4-8 (bodies in a state of rest) need lots of hands-on activities (impressed forces) to learn (compelling change)!
All the activities in this book are based upon science principles, many of which are explained by Newton's laws. The spirit of Sir Issac is present on the pages of this book offering explanation, advice, additional information and encouragement. The labs range from defining air to explorations of air pressure, wind, Bernoulli's principle, breath, siphons and carbon dioxide. Many of the Science Action Labs provide data tables and background information. An answer key is provided.
This innovative collection of Science Action Labs provides a multitude of material for your students. Choose some activities to animate your class demonstrations, convert some to hands-on labs for the entire class or develop some for individual projects or reports. You'll find that each Science Action Lab is designed to encourage your students to THINK and SOLVE PROBLEMS and, after all, isn't that what science is all about?
Newton would approve.
