Art and Visual Perception: A Psychology of the Creative Eye
by Rudolf Arnheim is a work of great importance to any serious artist. In a nutshell, Arnheim tells us in language only we (artists) could fully appreciate and comprehend how our brains and our eyes do so naturally what they do. This is a left brained guy who is fascinated by we right brained people. This work and his other masterpiece "Visual Thinking" make me delighted to be a visual thinker.
Good as Creative Writing At Best.......2007-05-16
The problem that I have with this book is that there are so many other books out there that are so much better in terms of describing art concepts and perception concepts. This book has had its run. Cognitive science, studies of synesthesia, the amygdala, you name it, have progressed far beyond the scope of this book. As an artist of thirty years who is on the lookout for books to consider as textbooks for my teaching, I would feel like a sadist making my students read this.
Arnheim meanders in a sort of stream-of-consciousness style of writing. He may be entertaining to some, but I find him hard to follow and his points moot. Also, the illustrations are, beyond the artwork reproductions, pretty bad. A much better illustrator could have been hired to do them.
I find his choice of topics to convey his message to have such a personal feel that I am left thinking that it wouldn't be the best choice for art students to learn either their craft or history. And, as I said earlier, there are much better books available. If this book at least touched on contemporary scientific theories, I could give it more stars. As is, it probably ran out of steam thirty years ago.
Excellent- but not light- reading.......2005-10-15
This book was purchased as a text for school- I don't believe I would be inclined to pick this one off the shelves and purchase it on my own for pleasure after some perusing. Arnheim has revised this text over the years, and this final version (according to him in the preface) is much more comprehensive. I would say that is a classic understatement by him. His style reminds me more of undergraduate psychology texts I had read. Dense, not a lot of pictures, and a lot of philosophical concepts on the nature of art. However, like all things, rewarding in the depth available in the text. Just don't try to digest it all at once, and don't be distracted. If you are, you'll find yourself reading passages over again.

It articulates the way we look at art both obvious and non-obvious. Related to optical illusions and our vision. Good book for both artists and non-artists to analyse why we see things the way we do without going too much into the neurological part of it.

If you want to learn why the things are seen in the way they are seen or want to control the look of your objects to build up as a concrete whole, wheter in a motion picture, a paint, a photograph, architecture, sculpture, a graphical design piece, or more strictly speaking, if you ever asked yourself what is a line, what makes a triangle more interesting than a square, why my piece of design looks unstable, and start to think that you are going mad :) this is the decisive beginning for understanding visual communication... Must be bought together with "The Power of the Center" for a complete look... Basics of geometry, psychology, philosophy and history of art are required...

Great book to help identify sleep problems.......2004-11-07
When the title says "Don't Snore Anymore", I expect it to give me a treatment that will stop the snoring. It did not but it does an excellent job presenting a snoring quotient to help one realize the severity of their snoring. It goes into detail about the polysomnography and how to select the right specialist. Many over the counter "cures" are described, as are nonsurgical and surgical treatments, however none of these have good success rates. It ends with a resource for sleep centers. My impression was that the author feels that the main reason for snoring is being overweight. He gives lots of good suggestions for maintaining a healthy weight.

This book is an excellent source for treating various kinds of snoring related disorders. It is extremely well written, Dr. Hausfeld does a nice job with this entire book. It is very practical and useful for many snoring problems. A must have for anyone with these symptoms! It helped a family member of mine realize his problems and we got help. Highly recommended!

The Anglo-Irish War has often been referred to as the war 'the English have struggled to forget and the Irish cannot help but remember'. Before 1919, the issue of Irish Home Rule lurked beneath the surface of Anglo-Irish relations for many years, but after the Great War, tensions rose up and boiled over. Irish Nationalists in the shape of Sinn Féin and the IRA took political power in 1919 with a manifesto to claim Ireland back from an English 'foreign' government by whatever means necessary. This book explores the conflict and the years that preceded it, examining such historic events as the Easter Rising and the infamous Bloody Sunday.

The author is a British Army officer with outrageous bias.......2007-05-06
The author treats with utter disdain the Irish men and women who directly or indirectly supported the Easter rising and subsequent years up to 1922. It would be an exaggeration to say that poor writing and bias drips off every page - more like every other paragraph. His childish scarcasms are a bit much, too. After reading this light volume, I found myself wondering what criteria Osprey Publishing uses in its selection of specific materials and authors! Be cautious with other volumes in this series.
If there was half a star, I would have rated this trash as such. The photographs are of good quality and interesting. If the book was around $1.50 I would suggest to "consider" purchasing for the photographs.
The troubles.......2007-03-17
Nice concise treatis on the Anglo-Irish wars. Typical of te Osprey publishing. Great inexpensive informative works on a multitude of subjects w/ great pics and I love the colour plates.
A Civil War, By Any Other Name.......2006-11-10
Peter Cottrell provides excellent insight into this partially forgotten conflict. For anyone who is unfamiliar with the Essential Histories series, these books provide a short and succinct description of a particular war. As expected, the book is ninety pages long and contains a wide selection of black and white photos. The Anglo-Irish war was different than most conventional wars. Large armies did not meet on the field of battle. The Troubles, as this war was called, is much closer to a civil war or an insurgency. Without too much imagination, the reader can see where this period bears some similarities to the current conflict in Iraq.
Even though this was not a conventional war, the book still provides useful tactical descriptions on certain actions, such as the Listowel Mutiny and the Ambush at Kilmichael. Numerous organizations were created, fought, and later disbanded during this conflict. This can be confusing to the average reader. Cottrell, however, does a nice job of describing the evolution and activities of the Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC), Irish Republican Army (IRA), the Black and Tans, and the Dublin Metropolitan Police (DMP) to name a few. The book also contains color maps of Ireland and its various counties along with tables of the number of wounded and killed during the applicable years.
Cottrell points out an annoying little fact that the Troubles were more of a civil war than a fight for freedom against the British invaders. Many of the Unionists were Irish. In other words, they were of the same ethnic heritage as their Republican enemies. A glaring illustration of this fact can be seen in the ranks of the RIC and DMP. These Irish organizations were clearly loyal to the Crown. Many historians also gloss over the fact that thousands of Irish took a break during this period to fight for England in World War I.
This book also provides an interesting example of information warfare, long before that term became common. Several Irish rebels were executed after the Easter Uprising. Britain exercised its normal right to execute people who fought against it during wartime (i.e.: World War I). Nevertheless, the British actions were painted in a negative light. On the other hand, atrocities committed by the IRA were often glossed over.
Some parts of the book are confusing, as the time line goes back and forth. A decent understanding of this period would be helpful to the reader. That said, it is still a nice summary of people and events that the average reader has vaguely heard of, such as Michael Collins and the Easter Uprising. The "Portrait of a Soldier" chapter talks about David Neligan, someone who fought on both sides. Despite a slightly confusing time line, this is a pretty good addition to the historical writing on this period.

The Tuesday Club is a book of minutes from the colonial times.Tuesday clubs sprouted all over the colonies to give the artistic people a place to share ideas. It has many interesting stories, poems, etc. in it. Great reading for the history buff!

This volume contains a number of mini-review articles authored by speakers and attendees at the IMA workshop on Pattern Formation in Continuous and Coupled Systems. Pattern formation has been studied intensively for most of this century by both experimentalists and theoreticians. This workshop focused on new directions in the patterns literature. The goals were to continue communication between these groups, and to familiarize a larger audience with some of the newer directions in the field. Systems that generate new types of pattern such as discrete coupled systems, systems with global coupling, and combustion experiments were stressed, as were new types of pattern. The mini-reviews in this volume are intended to be pointers to the current literature for researchers at all levels and therefore include extensive bibliographies. They are also intended to discuss why certain subjects are currently exciting and worthy of additional research.
