Customer Reviews:
very good book.......2005-10-08
I found this to be a very good book and very educational. I am painting my 19th century house using it as a guide. In the previous review someone wrote:
"Unfortunately, there are precious few old drawings and the ones they do have are done in muted browns and beiges. Now, I know they didn't have color photos back in those days, but I do wish they'd included more color pictures (drawings) of these old houses."
This person has obviously missed the point of the book. Did you read it? Those _are_ color drawings and those "muted browns and beiges" _were_ the colors used back then. People have a stereotype of 19th century colors as supposedly being bright and contrasty; this is due to the colorist movement in San Francisco back in the 70s, but is not appropriate when seeking 19th century accuracy. The crazy row-house colors of San Francisco are modern interpretations; whereas the Victorians preferred earth tones. The authors go at length to explain this with drawings and historic reproductions that are accurate in color.
My only gripe with this book is that there should be more photographs of 19th houses painted historically. I think more photos would give home restorers more ideas to pick from.
Quite a good reference book for old house lovers (like me!).......2000-05-02
This book is over 110 pages and every page has at least one picture, and most have two or three.
Beyond the good information re: color schemes, there is a lot of information in this book about the 101 details (fretwork, finials, porches, etc) of an old house.
Unfortunately, there are precious few old drawings and the ones they do have are done in muted browns and beiges. Now, I know they didn't have color photos back in those days, but I do wish they'd included more color pictures (drawings) of these old houses.
There are also some very interesting old paint ads - such as one that suggests the right house paint is *the* key to health and happiness. The book also contains plenty of written information and history, which is interesting reading.
And the photos/drawings offer a nice blend of the ostentatious Queen Annes and by contrast, the simple and modest "Builder's Style" homes.
I'm an old house purist trying to redo my simple old home as authentically as possible. This book is a good resource for that.
Excellent detail, very helpful.......1999-07-07
I really enjoyed all the details and information so that I can paint my own Victorian home. Good color combinations, great historical information. I do wish there had been a few more photos of correctly painted homes.

Flash 4! Creative Web Animation (3rd Edition)
ASIN: 0764533568 |
Amazon.com
It's a challenge to write a book for a wide audience without weakening its effectiveness for any one group. Flash 4 Bible rises to the challenge, providing a clear and thorough introduction to Flash 4 for beginners as well as a comprehensive guide to the application's more complex features, like ActionScripting, for intermediate and advanced users. No one gets shortchanged here.
Although readers can reference the book in any order (the index makes troubleshooting very easy), each chapter can serve as an effective tutorial. The first third of the book maps the user interface and introduces the tools for creating animations and working with sounds. The chapter on ActionScripts is straightforward; as in the rest of the book, topics are subdivided into logical and easy-to-digest chunks. Charts help organize operators and properties.
Since, for most Web developers, Flash is just one application among many in the workflow, the authors spend considerable time on real-life situations where it is used with Photoshop, QuickTime 4, or Director. The last chapters cover distributing the Flash movie, either within a Web page, as a QuickTime movie, or as a standalone.
Along the way, sample files on the CD-ROM illustrate numerous tools and procedures while expert tutorials feature more detailed projects by leading Flash experts, such as "Sending a Form to an E-mail CGI Script." The uncluttered writing style of the book pairs well with the equally clear and well-captioned screen shots.
Because Flash is a complicated application, the book's simple layout and non-jokey text tend to minimize reader confusion. The book even anticipates common questions in sidebar notes and tips. By focusing on teaching Flash 4 step by step, this manual may succeed where others have failed. And over 600 pages of small steps can take you pretty far. --Angelynn Grant
Topics covered: A comprehensive manual to using Flash 4, including an introduction to the interface and tools, how to create graphics within Flash and how to import them, using sound, creating animations, using ActionScripts, working in tandem with other applications and distributing finished movies. CD-ROM includes sample files to illustrate points and accompany tutorials, as well as demo versions of Flash and other related applications.

Customer Reviews:
Stupid CD case.......2001-07-14
The book was good but the CD case is made terribly and takes forever to open. Also it is hard to read without taking the CD out (gives it more flexibility)I also was dissapointed when I found out that it dosen't actually have flash 4 on it and instead has a trial of it
Good but too much reading...........2001-01-06
This is a great book on learning Flash 4.0 inside out, but man there are so many pages. if the book could of been more precise and much smaller I would have given it a 5 all the way.
But dont get me wrong after reading this you will know your Flash 4.0
Oops...........2000-11-07
Have worked earlier with Flash 3, although still being at an advanced novice level, I expected great things from the Flash 4 Bible when I purchased it to further my knowledge. Unfortunately, what I found was entirely too much generalized information at the beginning of the book...and tutorials where steps were missed entirely, as well as other tutorials which gave incorrect information. For instance, one tutorial instructed the user to select a previously-created button while in a movie clip screen, and then access Modify/Instance. Unfortunately, Modify/Instance was not available from that screen, but was greyed out, and it required one to return to the main screen to access. In the same tutorial, the author neglected one step entirely. I found the missing step entirely by accident, simply by playing with radio buttons to see what function each accomplished.
I suppose this wouldn't be too much of a nuisance, if one had all the time in the world to sit and just click on options until one worked. However, in the real world, most of us don't have that sort of time or patience.
Needless to say, my money was wasted on this book.
No Payoff........2000-10-26
It's like reading the manual really, really slowly. After weeding through the basic stuff, which can't be helped nowadays, you only find more generalized, basic information. I expected a lot more coming from a lot of the leaders in the flash industry. Granted there were some great chapters, generally by contributing authors, but even these were available sooner online. I think perhaps, this book chose to be too broad in covering every aspect of flash, which led to having to skim over certain areas that users at my level find most crucial. For a beginner who is put off by the manual for whatever reason, this is a great book. For someone who has already taken on flash, this book will become tiresome. Had this book arrived at the release of Flash 4, then it certainly would've faired better, at least with me. 3 stars because it's valuable to some and not to others. Hope the Flash 5 bible can surpass the already provided documentation for Flash 5.
Better than the training manuals.......2000-10-25
Macromedia is not known for having great training material. In fact, the Flash online subculture provides better insight than the program manuals.
With this in mind the Flash 4 Bible does a good job at teaching you the basics of Flash. This book falls flat when it comes to ActionScripts (but so do most Flash books).
You will not become an expert in Flash from this book. To do that you will need Hillman Curtis' "Flash Web Design" (the best Flash book I have ever seen).
For the new Flash user, or someone who enjoys the format of these series of books, Flash 4 Bible is a good reference tool.

Book Description
In 1879 Frank Hamilton Cushing rode unannounced into Zuni Pueblo. Sent by the Smithsonian Institution, he stayed at Zuni until 1884 and became the world's first live-in anthropologist. His writings gave Zuni a fame it never sought. Now Phil Hughte turns the tables on Cushing. His drawings tell the story of Cushing from the Zuni perspective, with anthropological commentaries by Triloki Nath Pandey, Jim Ostler, and Krisztina Kosse. This unique book will be relished especially by anthropologists, American Indians, and other people who partake of more than one culture.
A Zuni Artist Looks at Frank Hamilton Cushing was originally published by Zuni A:shiwi Publishing in 1994, but is now widely available through University of New Mexico Press.
"I loved it!"--W. Richard West, Jr.
A wildly irreverent series of cartoons and commentaries provide a Zuni view of the first live-in anthropologist.
Customer Reviews:
Fun!.......1997-11-07
In A Zuni Artist Looks at Frank Hamilton Cushing, Phil Hughte portrays the images of F. H. Cushing who was an American ethnologist who resided in a late nineteenth century Zuni pueblo. Hughte, a trained artist, illustrates the life of Cushing in Zuni pueblo in a form of cartoon. Hughte offers forty-three cartoons which are developed upon Cushing's the reminiscence of his Zuni years, My Adventures in Zuni, and letters written by him, or to him by others. They are also accompanied by the cartoonist's explanatory comments on his drawings, reflecting his own interpretation of what Cushing did and meant to Zuni people at that time. What Hughte offers with his cartoons is the perspectives of the society studied which is hardly conveyed in such anthropological monographs. As an insider of Zuni culture, Hughte depicts the ethos of Zunis of the ninteenth century and provides "the other side" of the story which were told by Frank Hamilton Cushing. In other words, the reader is able to see how "other people" explain themselves.Hughte's drawings are done by a pencil, presenting a beautiful monochrome tone. It is interesting to observe that Hughte always illustrates Cushing in traditional Zuni outfit, implying Cushing's obsession with the culture, and constantly depicts Cushing with almost no facial expressions. On contrary, Zunis are rich in expressions as well as in clothing, representing the emotions of the people. Hughte's juxtaposition of the images of Cushing and Zunis clearly shows their divergence in perspectives. Generally speaking, cartoons are often associated with satire and caricture in which the target is tha larger entities such as political power, or the dominant culture, in this case Cushing who represents the Anglo-American culture. However, Hughte uniquely portrays Cushing in many ways; one way he is disturbing the Zuni clowns, and another way he protects their land from U.S. troops. He is an outsider, a Bow Priest, an ethnographer, and a clown, representing a trickster figure in the Zuni society. This is the very reason why Cushing appears human and does not appear as the target of satire or caricture. Hughte brings such figure on the settings where Zunis are warm and kind, treating them all equally in a drama called "A Zuni society in the ninteenth century." While maintaining a Zuni perspective, Hughte teaches us to see the story as a whole, helping us to balance between the objectivity and the subjectitvity.

Politically Correct Information Makes for Bad Biography.......1998-10-01
Horn Book calls this book "a detailed, informative, and readable chronicle" of Chung's life, and I heartily agree. The book is very specific and has a good source of information about various political conventions and issues during Connie's years as a reporter. If the reader is searching for Chung's thoughts, ideas, or emotions during her life however, they will be thoroughly disappointed. Her wedding, probably the most personal event of her life, is briefly mentioned in the sentence "in December 1984, they were married in Connie's New York apartment. " The bottom life here is that the mediocre writing style and reservoir of trivial information about political candidates makes for a sloppy biography.
Synopsis: For the most part, this biography outlines the key achievements and milestones chronically in the life of Connie Chung. Beginning prior to her birth in China, where her parents are born, and continuing forward until about the 1990's when she began to disappear from the public eye.

Secrets of the Seven Smallest States of Europe: Andorra, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, San Marino, and Vatican City
ASIN: 0595314856 |
Book Description
An Expat's Life, Luxembourg & The White Rose is a refreshing and forthright take on the Englishman Abroad genre. Reading David Robinson's relaxed prose is like sitting down for a drink or two with the author in the pub of the title. Indeed, as the tome progresses, so the reader warms to Robinson's down-to-earth character.
The author's very personal view of an expat's life in Luxembourg is not overbearing, and even the most informed reader will learn something new about the history of the Grand Duchy, its bureaucracy and social conventions and attitudes. The book is brimful with little snippets of useful information and trivia for those unfamiliar with the country, and Robinson's anecdotes will spark empathy with readers who live, or have lived, in Luxembourg. --Duncan Roberts, editor of 352 Magazine.
Customer Reviews:
The most poorly written book I've ever attempted to read.......2006-04-29
This book is unreadable. The horrid syntax is the best part of the book, the content ranges from patronizing to simply offensive. Mr. Robinson makes no effort to understand Luxembourg or learn anything about the languages, instead he makes wild generalized assumptions about those things he doesn't understand (most everything). He strikes me as a middle-aged man stuck in perpetual adolescence. He also has an annoying tendency to drift off subject in mid-paragraph. If you want to know anything factual about Luxembourg, this is not your book.
What A Surprise!.......2006-04-19
I accidentily bought this book while buying white roses online. What a delightful surprise! Robinson's prose is an infusion of fascinating description and humour. You find yourself travelling alongside David Robinson & his companions(sometimes all in his head) as you become immersed in this exhilarating traveller's tale. I found myself so absorbed in Robinson's journey, that I am inspired to travel around Luxumberg and The Grand Duchy myself. One of the most enchanting stories I've had the pleasure of reading. What a life this man has had! This great little book is jam packed full of travel genre scrapes and adventures, historical and cultural insights and bizarre recollections from the author. A wonderful read. If the front cover photograph of "The White Rose" is anything like the picture, then I'm in for a real treat when I get there. The inset photograph of the hat and umbrella says it all-pure Robinson. If I'm lucky, maybe I'll find him fascinating others at the bar in all his raconteur style. But he's probably moved on to the next unexplored terrain. One can only hope.
Completely Underrated.......2006-04-19
David Robinson's book offers a compelling foray into the life of an expat Brit living abroad in Luxembourg. The reader catches a glimpse into the true charm of the Grand Duchy through the quaint and often amusing anecdotes David so masterfully spins. I had the pleasure of meeting the author while traveling in Bratislava, and I can attest to the fact that "An Expat's Life" is an accurate reflection of David's razor-sharp whit and joi d'vive. It is confounding that "An Expat's Life" has dropped from 2,112,293rd to 2,115,269th in the Amazon.com Sales Ranking in just one day. This book should be ranked higher!

Book Description
Getting the best healthcare in today's world requires that you participate in the process. Working with Your Doctor: Getting the Healthcare You Deserve will help you to be your own advocate, to get the very vest in healthcare, and to have the best possible relationship with your doctors. It will show you how to become an assertive, but understanding, medical care consumer. Medical treatments are more complex than ever, and there are almost always options, especially for chronic conditions. You often receive care from several doctors, either because you have conditions that require specialists or because you receive treatment through a group practice or HMO. This book contains stories from both doctors and patients -- medical "frequent fliers," who share, in their own words, the lessons and strategies they have learned in their medical journeys. These first-hand accounts are a reminder that with the right tools we can maneuver through the often complicated maze of medical information and get the best care available. We don't waste any energy railing against "the system" or demonizing doctors. Instead, we give you in-depth, practical information on:
- Finding the right doctor
- Communication and mutual decision-making
- Rights and responsibilities of the physician and patient
- Problem solving and handling conflict
- Questions to ask about tests, drugs, and surgery
- Researching medical literature and talking with your doctor about what you find
- Options for taking action if you've been wronged
Being well informed can protect you against mistakes or bad care. Working with Your Doctor: Getting the Healthcare You Deserve guides you through the medical care environment and is an education for even the most savvy healthcare consumer.

It's easy to get overwhelmed and lost in the complicated medical maze that we all face, especially when dealing with a medical crisis. This practical book is well worth the read. Immensely practical, helpful--and easy to read!.......1999-11-11
This immensely practical book not only tells you how to get the most out of your relationship with your doctor, but gives dozens of examples from patients and doctors alike. It's easy to read, too. It helps empower you to be an active participant in your own medical care.

Book Description
John Frederick Charles Fuller (1878–1966), British soldier, military analyst, and war historian, is considered the father of modern armored (tank) warfare—first as planner of the attack at Cambrai in November 1917, and then as author of a number of works that challenged traditional British military thought. His ideas were resisted in his own country but had a major impact on German and Soviet military doctrine. Sir Basil Liddell Hart (1895–1970) was also a British military historian and analyst of note and authored influential military histories covering figures from Scipio Africanus to Field Marshal Rommel.
In the twelve analytical essays in Studies in British Military Thought Brian Holden Reid examines these two figures whose ideas have influenced the interpretation of events in military history from antiquity to the Cold War. He compares and contrasts their views on tactics, operational art and strategy, and war as a social phenomenon. Additionally, he discusses the radically different temperaments of the two and shows how their differences shaped their work in important ways. In so doing, he continues to bring their ideas to students and practitioners of modern warfare and raises fundamental issues concerning the nature of war.

Book Description
An irresistible account of the pioneers of mountaineering "as colorful and eye-opening as the characters involved." --Guardian
Imagine a world without IMAX or Gore-tex, before North Face, a world without mobile phones or high-altitude Internet links, super-light hiking boots and polyamide fleece. Imagine a time when the Alps were as remote as the Himalayas and the Himalayas as remote as the moon. Traversing a century of climbing that began with the Victorian enthusiasts and ended with the conquest of the great Himalayan peaks, Mick Conefrey and Tim Jordan take us back to that (not-so-distant) world to tell the stories of the extraordinary men who were the first to climb the world's best-known mountains--the Matterhorn, McKinley, Everest, and K2. Their quests provide welcome historical context and very modern thrills for readers of adventure narratives. Accompanied by unique archival materials, detailed maps, and photographs, Mountain Men invites us to follow in the footsteps of these fearless explorers, and tells us their stories with all their romance and stupidity, bravado and suffering, courage and miscalculation, intact.
Meet the Mountain Men:
Albert Smith was an impresario who climbed Mont Blanc with the help of 16 guides, 18 porters, and 90 bottles of spirits; his Piccadilly shows turned mountaineering from a folly into a sport.
Edward Whymper, perhaps the greatest of the Victorian climbers, was the first to summit the Matterhorn, but not an hour later he lost four members of his party in a horrible accident that would shadow him for the rest of his life.
The Duke of Abruzzi, heir to the Italian throne, reached the intimidating slopes of K2 in 1909 but concluded that no one could climb it in his lifetime--and discovered he was right.
Mount McKinley was claimed by not one but several climbers, including America's great explorer--and, it turned out, fraudster--Dr. Frederick Cook, who had his porters take pictures of him on a lookalike crevasse many miles away from the actual mountain; and Hudson Stuck, an English missionary whose ghost reportedly haunts the area today.
The eccentric Maurice Wilson, convinced that he enjoyed God's protection, decided to climb Everest alone--just as soon as he taught himself to fly and got himself smuggled into Nepal. He got further than anyone could have dreamed, but his body was discovered frozen just a hundred feet from a food cache left by an earlier party.
