Great Japanese/American decorating book.......2007-03-26
Wonderful book to look at over and over again. Great ideas for decorating with all the Japanese furniture, dishes and fixings. Can not wait to take some of the ideas from the book and use when back in the states. Guess it is off to the antique and shrine sales to look for more decorations.
Good book for working Japanese elements into your western interior.......2007-01-22
Many books on japanese interior design require that you remodel your house or make huge changes in order to get a fully authentic Japanese style. For many of us that is just not an option.
This book, instead, shows how to use Japanese fabrics, kimono, chests, etc, to give a Japanese style to your Western interior - WITHOUT - having to remodel. It does show some spaces that were built specifically for the Japanese look, but most of the book is more about decorating your existing space. I enjoyed also the suggestions about breaking up a space with hanging dividers and also creating a japanese-style bedroom, etc.
A starting point for creativity.......2005-01-21
I love this book and have spent a great deal of time absorbing the design ideas it offers. If you are looking for a book of traditional Japanese design, this is not what you are seeking; the authors are very straight-forward about their aim: how to integrate items from another culture into your lifestyle. Hence, a beautiful kimono may be used as an art object hung on the wall, because if you live in a large Western city, you probably wouldn't be wearing your kimono to the office. Come to think of it, most museum-quality artifacts from other cultures wouldn't be used in another age or setting EXCEPT for either decorative purposes or for an application other than what was originally intended. But that aside, there are many lessons to be learned here about incorporating elements of the Japanese aesthetic into a Western setting. This book, along with the authors' earlier "Japanese Accents in Western Interiors" are books to dream on for a person who is receptive to the notion of mixing facets of the East and the West.
Faux Japanese.......2003-04-01
I ordered this thinking it would be a good collection of Japanese design elements and ideas. I have no problem with mixing different cultural elements and using traditional elements creatively. However, most of what is featured is a sort of faux-Japanese design for yuppies. Items are completely out of place (i.e. a footwarmer used to keep flowrs; clothes hung on walls as decor) and rooms often cluttered. Further, many rooms were cluttered or not very Japanese at all. That said, a few featured houses were nice, and one in particular -- built in rustic Japanese fashion with dark wood -- was beautiful. Overall, unless this is your type of thing, I'd say look elsewhere for design ideas ...
Book Description
The eclectic look is home decor's hottest trend, but flea market shopping has become a national obsession, making it difficult to find real bargains. BJ Berti reveals how easy it is to get the look for less by giving new life to inexpensive castoffs and finding unusual ways to make the most out of ordinary pieces.
A flea market veteran, BJ is a pro at reimagining the wobbly end table as a vehicle for vibrant color and seeing beyond a coating of ugly paint or covering of faded fabric. In Flea Market Makeovers, she reveals secrets for spotting diamonds in the rough at local flea markets, neighborhood garage sales, and vintage furniture stores and shows how to gauge the potential of the curbside castoff.
Through twenty-five projects and a special section of basic techniques, BJ explains how a little loving care and a touch of elbow grease can transform the most forlorn-looking pieces into charming additions for all rooms of the home. Step-by-step instructions make it easy to follow her philosophy of restore, revive, and reuse. Why overlook a piece just because it has loose joints or a shaky leg? Minor fixes are easy to accomplish with a little craft know-how, and sometimes just a rigorous cleaning is all that's needed to unveil a prize find.
BJ carefully describes how to strip away layers of paint, smooth nicks and dents, and replace old stuffing and fabric. She also illustrates how simple it is to revive a piece by adding a painted pattern, some beveled mirror pieces, or a carved wooden molding. For example, a simple folding card table looks entirely different after BJ replaces its dull floral tabletop with new painted canvas. Finally, BJ demonstrates how to successfully reuse pieces with unexpected placement. For example, a bookcase with fresh detailing stands out as smart storage for a dining room, and a panel from an old upright piano makes waves as a headboard over a bed.
With projects that range from a new lamp to brighten a corner of a living room to a mirrored panel for sectioning off a study,
Flea Market Makeovers balances the best of crafting with extremely chic results for every room of the home. Flea Market Makeovers makes it easy to spot the hidden gems with the acumen of a pro.

Refinish Those Flea Market Finds.......2005-05-18
This book provides a variety of step-by-step instructions, ideas and tips for refinishing bargain items you might find at a flea market, yard sale, Goodwill or even in your own garage. There are 25 projects in all, ranging from lampshades to shelves.
While some of the projects are a bit eclectic and might not be for everyone, you can still adapt the concept and steps to create something unique that suits your own taste. For example, you could follow the directions for rewiring an old lamp using the base of your choice, not necessary the pressed glass that the author uses.
The book includes excellent color photos and simple directions for each project. There are chapters on lamps/shades, chairs, tables and beds, storing/organizing (bookcase, Mission-style coat rack, metal storage bin) and odds & ends (picture frame, folding screen room divider, etc.), so there's something for the curious as well as the more ambitious.
If you enjoy watching home decorating shows (like Trading Spaces) or are just a DIY kind of person of beginning to intermediate skills, this book provides some great ideas and how-to advice. If you're a more advanced DIY person, this might be a bit too basic for you.
Not bad but not my taste.......2001-08-09
I suppose I should start by specifying that I am not a flea market junkie, though I have been known to haunt garage sales and search for bargains that I could transform into something fun and wonderful for my home. This book does have a wide variety of projects in it, and the directions and materials needed for each project are laid out neatly and expertly. If you can follow directions, you should be able to accomplish most or all of the projects in this book.
That said, I was not attracted to the majority of the projects in here. You can, of course, customize each project to fit your home, and yes there are some decent tips in here as far as doing general fixer-upper jobs on old flea market finds...but in general the projects in this book appeared flashy, trendy, and too frilly for my tastes. I can flip through this book and my mind writes it off as 'just another fru-fru craft book', which I have an inordinately large pile of. :)
If you LIKE fru-fru craft books this would be a good one to get, because not only do you get a wide variety of projects, you also get handy tips on repair and maintenance, as well as a guide to tools and materials needed for this type of restoration work.
So go to it and good luck with those flea market bargains of yours!
Just Do It!.......2000-09-11
Flea-market junkies-- here's help with fixing up the stuff you just HAD to have and now wonder how on earth you're going to do it. The 25 projects outlined in this wonderful how-to book are just the beginning. Use them as "jumping off" lessons in repairing and refurbishing the worn, but good stuff you have sitting in your garage waiting for your loving attention. Large, clear photos and step-by-step instructions make for easy understanding of each project. I've used it and I treasure it, it's a jewel!

Donald Mitchell's well-known study of Mahler's early life and music is now available in paperback. On its first appearance in 1958, the book was greeted as a major advance in Mahler documentation and research. This edition was prepared with the help of Paul Banks and David Matthews, who, in a substantial critical appendix, correct and amplify Mitchell's classic text.

Funny look at golfing. One has to have a sense of humor to
play the game anyway and these cartoons show the humorous
truisms associated with the "game."
Great Little Golf Book.......2005-06-05
This is a great little golf book with a great group of golf cartoons covering just about every aspect of the game. I produce a newsletter for our local club and I intend to use some of the material in the book in our monthly publication. Neat book and really good price.
Golf Cartoons Really Hit Home.......2005-06-04
This book "Just Fore Laughs" is filled with delightful cartoons about the world of golf. I think everybody that plays the game of golf will find him/her self in one or more sections of the book. The quotations that go with cartoons are cute and appropriate for the cartoon ... for example, the section on Seniors shows Beetle Bailey's General Halftrack leaping out of bed and proclaiming that he feels young and strong and that nothing will stop him from succeeding on this day while his wife stays in bed and says "You're playing golf, right?" The quotation accompanying the cartoon is by Michael de Montaigne and says "Let us take care that age does not make more wrinkles on our spirit than on our face." Another cartoon is Jeff MacNelly's Shoe hitting his ball into a water hazard while his fiend says his swing is instant bogey ... just add water. The accompanying quotation is from Henry Wassworth Longfellow .. "From the waterfall he named her, Minnehaha, Laughing Water." This is a gift type book and it's pretty thick for its' type with more that 150 pages and a lot or golf cartoons. It's priced very well at $14.95 so it makes a great gift for anybody that plays golf and realizes how absurd the game can be sometimes.

Friendship saves him.......2004-03-17
This is a very good account of what happened in Cambodia in 1970. The author worked for Time in Saigon, and was ousted to cover Laos and Cambodia because of his anti war views. A Vietnamese friend he worked with in Saigon was critical in his survival in Cambodia.
In Cambodia, he sees the massacre of Cambodians by the Vietnamese, and the massacre of Vietnamese by Cambodians. Vietnamese in Cambodia ran most of the businesses and had the skilled labor knowledge. Cambodians resented this.
Several reporters died covering the Cambodian fighting, including Sean Flynn, the son of Errol Flynn.
The author saved a bunch of Vietnamese from slaughter by the Cambodians.
Later, he was captured by the Cambodians and turned over to the North Vietnamese. The North Vietnamese checked his background to determine whether or not to shoot him.
Because of his friendship of a Vietnamese who also worked for Time, his life was spared.
In 1985 the author returned to Vietnam and visited his old Time friend. It turned out he was a Col in the North Vietnmaese army.
The Col explained that he was not killed while a captive as they were friends.
He also describes the battles with Time staff and his marriage.
Anson's coverage of the war in Vietnam and Cambodia........2002-07-05
I came close not to buying this book in a second hand book store. I read Anson's views on Richard Nixon, and found them not very objective, so when I saw this book about the Vietnam War I was not sure. The book is very readable, and Anson makes sure to detail his own weaknesses in the book, especially his rocky marriage and use of drugs and alcohol. He details his coverage of the war. Also details his views on the Cambodian government and their Vietnamese massacres. He is sypathetic to the NVA, even though several of his friends were killed by them. His personal stories are the best in detailing the corruption of Cambodian and South Vietnamese governments.
Painfully honest account of life and death, Cambodia, 1970........1999-10-25
A memoir detailing the experiences of an idealistic young war correspondent in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. Running the dangerous roads of 1970 Cambodia in pursuit of both news and personal fame, the author allows his readers a special insight into his soul. Anson's accounts of the deaths of his friends and colleagues, as well as the details of his own capture and detention by revolutionary forces, are remarkably vivid and painful to read, but at the same time filled with a special sense of black humor. No emotion, no matter how unflattering, is hidden from the reader. The author would certainly not be surprised to learn that the attitudes of US Embassy bureaucrats toward the death and disappearance of these same journalists was no different twenty years later than it was during the course of the war.

"Too often, Sister, the beautiful things in life are taken for granted, and I realize that you are one of the most beautiful aspects of mine. That's way it's so important for me to tell you now that you are special to me." - Deanne Laura Gilbert

I want to thank you... for being the best sister I could ever hope for!" - Donna Gephart

Are you joking?.......2007-07-18
Are you joking? 5 stars? If I could give this book 0 stars, I would. This is not even poetry! It's unimaginative thoughts chopped up to give the appearance of a poem. I got no image or feeling from reading these.
Here is a sample poem:
Is is that
you starve a fever
and feed a cold?
Or is it the other
way around?
Considering this dilemma
I think I'll just
feed both!
Now if a friend said that to me in passing I would get a little chuckle but as a poem?!?! It's just not even original. I am sure she is a wonderful woman. From the title's of her other books it seems like is all about empowering women. Stick to that.
A Guide for a Wonderful Attitude.......2001-04-28
I have not only read the book but have had the pleasure of meeting the author. Both book and author are full of wit, wisdom and insight. The book is very cleverly written and is full of subtle suggestions on how to manage many situations that you might come up against in a positive way. Not only will it make you laugh, it will bring an occasional tear to your eye. You will see a lot of yourself or your friends and loved ones in many of her poems. Definately a wonderful addition to anyone's library. Put this wonderful little book on your "must read" list.

An Excellent Military History.......2005-12-27
Niall Barr, a professor at King's College in London, has written an excellent military history of the three battles fought at El Alamein in Pendulum of War. Barr's narrative includes far more detail about the three battles (First El Alamein, Alam Halfa and Second Alamein) that decided the seesaw struggle between the German Afrika Korps and the Commonwealth 8th Army. This history is well organized, well argued, impressively documented and abounds with new details and analysis about a well-known subject. Pendulum of War is highly recommended for military officers or historians who wish to read a good case study of how armies transform themselves in wartime.
Pendulum of War consists of 19 chapters that trace the operations of the 8th Army from the fall of Tobruk in July 1942 to the pursuit of the Afrika Korps after Operation "Supercharge" in November 1942. Four appendices cover several key 8th Army planning documents and 24 maps complement the narrative. The author is meticulous and covers virtually everything, although unlike Jon Latimer's recent book on El Alamein, Barr does not include an order of battle. However, Barr is to be commended for his even-handedness and objectivity, particularly involving his analysis of the relative contributions of the 8th Army's two commanders in this period - Auchinleck and Montgomery. Barr does not defend either man's faults (although I think he goes a bit easy on Montgomery at times) and concludes that Auchinleck's basic plans for fighting at El Alamein were sound, but his command of 8th Army was less effective and less sure than Montgomery's.
Readers will find the first half of the book, somewhat different from the standard histories that have been heretofore available on this subject. While other histories acknowledge that the 8th Army often suffered heavily at the hands of the Afrika Korps, Barr makes clear that such a view is an understatement. Operations such as "Bacon," "Splendour" and "Manhood" rarely get much mention, but Barr expertly details how these fumbling attempts by 8th Army to stop the victorious Afrika Korps ended in one disaster after another. Indeed, before the decisive Second Battle of El Alamein, 8th Army had frittered away much of its infantry in near futile small-scale counterattacks. Military professionals will be surprised to see the planning and execution of brigade-size night attacks that expected the Commonwealth infantry to advance 6-10 kilometers at night through minefields and then seize a fortified position. Amazingly, the Commonwealth forces (particularly the ANZACs) proved quite adept at night infantry attacks, but time and again they were unable to consolidate on the position before the inevitable German counterattacks. Indeed, it is hard to view the British performance in July 1942 as clumsy and it is amazing to see how often the same mistakes were repeated.
In the run up to Second El Alamein, Barr spends a gratifying amount of time examining even possible facet of the coming battle, including the engineer effort, the evolving British artillery tactics (the introduction of the coordinated corps shoot, known as a "stonk"), logistics and intelligence. Barr argues that despite its faulty tactics in the early July battles, the 8th Army evolved into a battle-wise force by October, while the Afrika Korps never adapted to its changing opponent (this is contentious, given that the Afrika Korps escaped its pursuers). Unlike most histories, Barr claims that 8th Army never actually achieved a breakthrough during the final days of "Supercharge" but that it was Axis counterattacks that finally consumed the Afrika Korps meager resources. Barr's coverage of the Axis point of view is somewhat less in this book, with more emphasis on the internal decisions within 8th Army, but he is able to convey the growing hopelessness of the Axis position. Overall, this is certainly one of the very best books on this subject available.
A Great Book on a Great Battle.......2005-06-12
The war in the desert during the Second World War has been the source of renewed interest in recent times, not just from the British, who always had great fondness for it, but elsewhere as well. A number of books have appeared but this one is the best. drawing on recent scholarship, it explains how and why this battle was fought.
The war in the desert during the Second World War has been the source of renewed interest in recent times, not just from the British, who always had great fondness for it but elsewhere as well. A number of books have appeared but this one is the very best. Drawing on recent scholarship, it explains how and why this battle was fought.
As the title says, there were three battles in 1942 around El Alamein, which was not a town but a railway stop in the desert. The first, in July 1942, is known as the First Battle of Alamein and was the battle at which the British Eighth Army halted the German and Italian advance into Egypt. The second, in August, known as the Battle of Alam Halfa, saw the defeat of Rommel's attempt to break through. The third, and most famous, in November, was the Second Battle of Alamein, in which the German-Italian Panzerarmee was defeated and forced to retreat from Egypt and Libya.
Prior to the fighting at El Alamein, the British Eight Army was spectacularly defeated by Rommel at the Battles of Gazala and Mersa Matruh. Barr explains how the Eighth Army was handicapped by poor leadership, faulty tactics and inadequate equipment. One might think that the Eighth Army turned the situation around by changing these factors but, as Barr shows, there was no time for this. The First Battle of Alamein was won in spite of these factors, through hard fighting.
Barr goes into the nuts and bolts of the fighting. He expertly explains the tactics of both sides and how these were determined by their weapons. He goes into the details of the all-important logistics, which alone explains how the two armies were able to fight in the desert. The importance of the storemen and mechanics is underlined. Nor is the important role of the air and naval forces in the fighting ignored.
He goes into the critical role of intelligence, particularly
Ultra - intelligence gathered from codebreaking activities. Barr does not flinch from explaining that the Germans had broken the American codes and Rommel was receiving first rate intelligence from the American liaison officer. He also tells of the much-neglected signals intelligence - listening in to radio traffic, both friendly and enemy - and the vital edge that it gave to Rommel, at least until his signal unit was destroyed by the 9th Australian Division.
It's easy for a historian to record that Lieutenant General L. J. Moreshead's 9th Australian Division was the Eighth Army's best division but Barr explains exactly why this was the case. In writing the book, he travelled to Australia and New Zealand and was rewarded not only with detailed documents about their national forces but translations of German and Italian documents.
A curiosity of El Alamein is that the reputation of the defeated Rommel remains solid but that of the two victorious Eighth Army commanders, General Sir C. Auchinleck and Lieutenant General B. L. Montgomery, remains controversial. Barr is critical of both, as well as Auchinleck's eccentric and controversial deputy chief of staff, Major General E. Dorman-Smith. while attempting a rehabilitation of Lieutenant General W. H. E. Gott, who was killed by the Luftwaffe on the brink of assuming command of the Eighth Army.
You will not find a better account of this battle than this one.
AN IMPORTANT ADDITION TO MILITARY HISTORY.......2005-05-03
Those with an interest in and knowledge of battle history will find an eye opener in Niall Barr's account of a pivotal battle in World War II, the battle of El Alamein. A Senior Lecturer in Defense Studies at Kings College London Barr has published prolifically in the field of military history. In addition, he is respected for the tours he conducts of battlefields, among them three to El Alamein.
A prodigious researcher, he presents much original proof in support of his theses. His sources include official documents from British, Australian and New Zealand as well as translated German material. His narrative is more than just a history as it is often presented in first-person accounts, bringing the North African campaign to vivid life.
While the Alamein campaign has been presented as very much a contest between Britain's Montgomery and Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, the author posits that this approach has only muddied the true story of this campaign.
"Pendulum of War" covers the fighting in 1942 from July to November. This followed the British army's disheartening rout by Rommel's Panzerarmee Afrika at the Libyan town of Tobruk. We read that this defeat puzzled Churchill and other observers: "During May, when the two armies had confronted one another along the line of defences which the British had built stretching from Ain el Gazala near the coast to Bir Hacheim in the far desert, the odds had seemed to favour the British. Yet this was only the most recent astonishing reversal of fortune that had taken place in nearly two years of war in the desert."
Barr posits that this army learned from bitter defeats and was able to forge itself into troops capable of overcoming their enemy, the dreaded Afrika Korps. He pokes holes into some of the theories that have long been advanced re Eight Army leaders, Generals Auchinleck and Montgomery, and delves deeply into desert warfare tactics. His account is bolstered by maps, appendices, and a lengthy bibliography.
"Pendulum of War is fine reading and an important addition to the archives of military history.
