Book Description

The North Fork is the roughly sixty-mile-long spit of New York's Long Island that runs from Riverhead to Orient Point. With the fairly well protected Long Island Sound on the North and Peconic Bay on the South, it was a logical place for some of the earliest English immigrants to settle and build barns. It is still home to more working farms than any other part of the island. And from the timber-frame barns of the British farmers of the seventeenth century to the pole barns of the twentieth, the variety is stunning.

In a survey sponsored by the Old House Society in Cutchogue, Mary Ann Spencer spent the last few years making a comprehensive inventory and photographing more than six hundred barns on the North Fork. Two hundred of them are still in use, although their fate is by no means certain. Here in their glory (and sometimes less than that) are the most interesting barns, which reveal, among other things, their functional development, their often haphazard fenestration, their soft patina of age, and their fit in the landscape. Spencer's complete survey forms a second part of this book, which provokes feelings of nostalgia and raises our fears for the future of these wonderful structures. More than 150 color photographs.

4 out of 5 stars Confrontational Barns.......2006-07-12

There is something in the American psyche that makes us believe in barns. Perhaps it's the feeling that somehow, we are still an agrarian society, or perhaps it's nostalgia for things that never were. But even if we haven't actually gone looking for these farm buildings, many of us somehow have a special place for them in our hearts.

The author of "Barns of the North Fork" was commissioned to do an inventory of existing barns on the spit of land that sticks out from the main body of Long Island. Even though just a few hours from New York City, farming is still a major occupation and of the 734 barns inventoried over half of them are still in agricultural use.

Other than a brief introduction and list of the inventoried barns, the book consists of about 90 color photographs of barns, with rather spare descriptions of the location of the barn, and occasionally a brief remark on some significant feature. The style is more in keeping with record keeping rather then a search for aesthetic significance, so that it is almost confrontational. Many of the buildings are photographed head-on without a trace of any sidewalls, as if the building were merely a stage set. Occasionally a structure is photographed from an angle but I often felt that that was because there was no other place for the photographer to stand. A few photographs show the environment of the structure, such as a barn in Southold about which the author asks "When we envision barns, do we see the structure or do we see the structure in its setting?" Unfortunately, more often than not, the author saw the structure. There are no detail photographs.

There is also a curious drabness about these barns, probably due to the fact that most pictures seem to have been taken on overcast days, with leaden skies. When the reader finally encounters a picture with the full range of light, the eye is surprised.

Perhaps I'm being overly critical because I've traveled North Fork roads and seen these same barns, and felt that they offered an opportunity for aesthetic work. But these pictures seem to have been created for another purpose.

Lovers of barns, and there are many, will enjoy this book. So will those who care for the North Fork. Photographers, on the other hand, may feel that there are missed opportunities. For them, I might recommend a little book published by the University of Iowa called "Harker's Barns: Visions of an American Icon" by Michael P. Harker.

5 out of 5 stars An Extraordinary Evocation of American Life.......2006-01-14

This is one of the most interesting and beautiful cultural studies I have ever read. It was fascinating to discover such a wealth and density of human experience, as memorialized in these unassuming yet proud utilitarian structures of our past, in an area of the country I knew nothing about. Looking at these barns, imagining the work and imagination it took to make them, and their centrality in the lives of those who used them, it felt as though a way into lives past had been opened to me. I can only hope these photos awaken a climate of respect and caring which will have these barns, and other structures like them, survive for many years to come.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing - a must have.......2005-10-27

The Barns of the North Fork is truly amazing. The book is the perfect blend of art and history, and one can truly see how much passion and effort the author has put in to make it so comprehensive. Since I've had it, it is the first book reached for on my coffee table and the one I've heard the most positive feedback about. For an enchanting portrayal of part of America's history, and culture you will not be dissapointed. It is truly unique and is most definitely a must have.

I'm repeating my review of the first book since my opinion is much the same. I will add that there is contact information for the featured artists and information about a contest for 3Demensional illustrators!
--
I consider myself an intermediate since I started with Clive Stevens' Fun with Paper Sculpture--I didn't really learn much more than I already knew. However, this book is suitable for anyone from a rank beginner to polished professional. I picked up some new techniques and discovered new types of paper and paints to use in my work. I've gotten the most use from the artist galleries beacuse they spur my own creativity to no end! I never tire of looking at the gorgeous pieces and find myself reading this book from cover to cover every now and then.

I don't draw very well, but I've found that I can easily build flowers and other objects from component shapes. The professional quality of featured projects spur me to do my very best to make my own stuff as polished and professional as possible. You'll be amazed with what you can create with little more than white glue and some cut up paper. Great book, geat hobby, great price.

4 out of 5 stars Once is not Enough!.......2000-06-08

Christopher Mako's has always had the ability to find and photograph the most beautiful men. Now in his book "Sewn Photos" he presents us with a wide array of semi-nude and nude young men who are very muscular as well as very handsome. He introduces a new dimension to his photography by showing each models photos in groups of four sewn shots on each page. There are two different poses in each group of four. Its like seeing each model in repeat freeze frame. I think Mako's presents us with images of what really turns him on, and then leaves it up to us to decide if we want to participate and also enjoy them.

Mako's photos have appeared in many magazines over the years (Interview) and currently are shown in Genre. Its exciting that they are now collected in a book. This is a unique book for your collection and enjoyment.

Book Description

In this montage of sharply focused and often amusing observations, former Omaha World-Herald columnist Al Frisbie takes you on an entertaining, humorous and sometimes heart-tugging journey as he reconstructs the trials and tribulations we all experience as we stumble through everyday life.

From his days as a leatherneck and his rise to journalistic mediocrity...to the joys and heartaches of marriage and raising a family...to his on-again, off-again relationship with a black-hearted, black-furred feline named Pepper, Al Frisbie has masterly captured all those universally embarrassing, painful and wonderful moments that make life worth living.

Through, "HEY, FATSO!", Frisbie has penned a collection of memories and experiences that contain all the warmth, humor and down-home wisdom that made him one of the area's most popular and well-read columnists.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars PREEEETY CAT, PREEETY CAT plEASE COME HOME.......2002-05-01

The only concern to be raised after reading AL Frisbie's "HEY, FATSO" is that it will be read by readers who are inevitably disappointed by what they perceive as an absence of some 'literary momentousness' expected of a work, that somehow this book is not 'significant' or without 'literary weight', maybe even back of the cereal box material. Granted, FATSO pushes no moral on its readers and there is no river through the night guided by the tears of a candlelight towards its place on Oprah's book list to echo in all eternity--And that is why Frisbie's book should be appreciated for what it is: a change of outlook, a breath of fresh air or a deep drag on a cigarette.
While a reader may have an easy time following and understanding the direct and controlled language in FATSO, said reader is also being lured--like a kitten by a string--by Frisbie's command over the language; the lanugage may be simple and the content light, but these factors in no way diminish the import of Frisbie's work. In the end "HEY, FATSO" is an energetic dash through the complex yet often ignored world of experiences we share with of our smoothly elusive, haughty yet independent--'Thanks, but I'll lick my own back'--fuzzy little feline friends. We pet, we love, sometimes we get into accidents and become one with the road. Problems with FATSO then are probably just personal problems, like mine--
being the owner of a one-hundred pound wolf/shepherd that likes to eat cats.

I own a copy of this book printed in the 80's. I assumed the new edition would have updated statistics. Unfortinately its just a reprint, not really a new edition.

The book is powerful but the stats need to be updated.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful and moving........2002-01-31

I'm grateful to David Reardon for collecting these stories. For those of us who unexpectedly suffer significant emotional distress or even trauma after abortion, it is such a relief to realize that we are not alone and not crazy. When I came across this book, it broke down my isolation and gave me hope for healing. I looked around for other resources to help me pursue that healing and have been incredibly grateful to find them. For me, knowing that other women also suffered was a vital first step toward recovery.

2 out of 5 stars The Art of Subtle Propaganda.......1999-11-24

One must read a few chapters of "Aborted Women: Silent No More" before realizing that despite its seemingly non-judgemental title, this book continues to force subtle pro-life propaganda on its audience. As a woman and feminist who has experienced abortion, I wholeheartedly agree that most women who undergo abortions suffer long-term emotional trauma as a result; this experience and suffering deserves to be given a voice and should not be denied or overlooked in order to further either side of the political debate. However, Mr. Reardon's use of the personal histories of women who have all since come to believe that what they did was bad and wrong, become pro-life advocates, and found solice in the Lord seems disgustingly biased. What of women, like myself and the many aborted women I know, who do suffer emotional trauma, but continue to believe in freedom of choice? The personal histories which Mr. Reardon utilizes are immeasurably valuable as testimonies of the abortion experience - but they are of a limited and obviously-slanted perspective. Mr. Reardon's book is full of useful statistical and factual information about the overall abortion experience, but these too are explained in a clearly "I told you how evil it was" tone. Is it so impossible for one to honor the voice of these women who have made the decision to abort without forcing religious or political propaganda down the throats of readers? Abortion may never be out of the public eye - and it is its presence in the public eye that has allowed it to become a political and religious issue. At its heart, however, it is a personal issue - the personal decision of every woman who is ever pregnant and does not immediately know that she will carry the child to term - whether she eventually does abort or not. This book is a useful example of the manipulation of women's stories for the sake of the greater pro-life cause, but it is difficult to read with any level of comfort if you don't already subscribe to that rhetoric.

5 out of 5 stars Shocking and Insightful.......1999-01-17

This is an invaluable book for anyone interested in the abortion issue. It details the very real emotional and physical fallout of elective abortion, and features the strained voices of women victimized by what our society calls "safe, legal abortion." Abuses against the poor and women of color are particulary distressing to read about. I hope every woman considering abortion will read this book first.

5 out of 5 stars A Good Book for All.......2005-09-06

I liked this book so much that after reading it in the library, I bought it on Amazon.com. I want my daughter (and son) to read it when they get older. After hearing so much pro-choice rhetoric EVERYWHERE, it is refreshing to read what I've always felt has been true in my heart. This book is pro-life FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF WOMEN WHO HAVE HAD ABORTIONS, making it unique in my eyes. It mentions the physical and psychological risks of abortion, that are all too often glossed over by the pro-choice advocates. Even the hardest cases for abortion, like rape and incest are addressed with candor and compassion from women who've been there. This book covers the impact abortion has on later children and problems women have with infertility and the breast cancer link. This book does NOT sit in judgement of women who've had abortions. That's the beauty of it, too. It is rather a cautionary tale, a means of educating women (and men, too). There are other options. Women deserve better than to be rejected for being pregnant, and killing their unborn when they think there's no other "choices". This book is TRUE FEMINISM...it is the love of women in their most vulnerable state. "Mother and child are as one, and they cannot be separated without doing violence to both." (Truly feminism should be the love and acceptance of women for what nature intended them to be at some point in their lives...mothers.)
I must also mention that this book accurately paints abortion as the money-making industry that it is, not a sacrament meant for the betterment of womankind.
I hope an expanded, newer edition comes out. I'll buy that, too.

      Book Description

Teotihuacan was the largest urban center in the New World in the first two centuries AD, and the Feathered Serpent Pyramid was a spectacular symbol of state power. Saburo Sugiyama investigates the ritual sacrifice of some 200 men and women that marked the erection of the Pyramid in this volume, the first substantial archaeological analysis of the political institutions of Teotihuacan based on stratigraphically recorded evidence. In the process, he illuminates our understanding of urbanization, the ritual behavior of elites, and the role of warfare and sacrifice in early Teotihuacan statecraft.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Fascinating.......2007-01-12

Teotihuacan is an amazing mystery. At its peak, it was the 6th largest city in the entire world and exerted at least partial control over key Maya cities up to 600 miles away. Yet it did so with stone age technology, no written language, no beasts of burden, and not even the wheel. And because of the lack of written records, it's very difficult for us today to understand how any of this was possible in general terms, let alone know the details of its civilization and administration.

This book is an attempt to throw some light on these enigmas. It was written by one of the recognized experts on the site, who has participated in many of the key excavations there, and is based on what is known as of the present. The main discussion is a detailing of the massive (200-odd) victim human sacrifice that was part of the ground-breaking ceremony of the Feathered Serpent Pyramid, one of the 3 major buildings of Teotihuacan, and its implications for the government of the city.

This book is definitely not light reading. It's written in a clear yet rather technical manner, so those who aren't familiar with scientific writing might find it rather heavy going, although still informative. For those with a real interest in pre-Columbian Mesoamerican history, however, it's a very useful and fascinating book. However, there's no way around the disturbing nature of its subject matter, although the book doesn't dwell or even speculate on the gory details. It just tries to explain what the quantity and arrangement of bodies and artifacts means for our understanding of life and government in Teotihuacan.

This second volume from the United Nations Intellectual History Project surveys the history of the UN's regional commissions and the ideas they have developed over the last 40 years. Each essay is devoted to one of the five regional commissions--Europe, Asia and the Far East, Latin America, Africa, and Western Asia -- and how they have approached their mission of assessing the condition of regional economics and making prognoses about future conditions. The essays describe how each commission has added local perspectives to global debates over economic development and brought an authentic regional voice to the UN.
