Ripped off!!.......2004-02-20

I am extremely upset with my purchase of this book Classic America by Wendell Garrett. I had previosuly checked this book out from my local library and loved it. It was a hardcover book of 297 pages. Since it was out of print in hardcover and currently offered in paperback, I bought it. I was shocked to see it had been reduced to 200 pages!! I want the other 97 pages I expected and paid for. Amazon failed to mention that the book had been edited down by 1/3 the size. What a ripoff and shame on you Amazon!!!

Beautiful photographs but poor quality.......2003-09-23

This tells a history of the U.S. during the late 1700's and early 1800's with an emphasis on events and people that influenced architecture and interior design.
The photographs are excellent, however I question the accuracy of the text. A couple paragraphs disagree with known experts without any comment. Some sections repeat themselves word for word. Entire paragraphs are printed twice, which calls into question the writing and editing of the work.
Finally, before I had even finished reading the book, it had fallen apart in my hands. So regrettably, what could have been a beautiful volume to display is now a bunch of loose leaves.

Historically accurate and visually sumptuous.......2002-08-08

Wendell Garrett has done students of interior design and architecture a very great service with this modestly priced history of America's Federal style. His concise and accurate text is amply matched by Paul Rocheleau's handsome photographs.

There is so much to learn, even for amateur students of American architectural history. We hear about Palladio, Robert Adam, Christopher Wren and others who influenced the American Federal style, but we also learn what was going on in the American colonies in a religious, economic, and legal sense--all of which helped to affect the shape and style of American architectural and decorative tastes.

One of the most interesting things is learning how American craftsmen, builders and architects (many of whom were slaves) were influenced by the latest European styles. American styles in everything, from dress to furniture to homes, tended to be more plainspoken and stripped down to the bare essentials than were their European counterparts.

This is an absolutely fascinating read, and a visual treat for anyone who is even remotely interested in the American Federal style.

Brag book.......2006-07-03

While there were several photographs of murals in different stages, most were not done sequentially with step by step instructions. There were good hints for painting effects. Overall, I found it to be the author's brag book with mostly photographs of their completed murals.

I have owned this book for several years. I have loaned it out, and purchased it many times for artist friends that want ideas or to start painting murals. If not complete, it has wonderful pictures and lovely step-by-step photos that make it a gem of a book.

Easy to grasp book on the subject of murals. I was inspired to attempt some for our house and had success. Author's discussion of materials especially helpful.

A+ addition for Beginner and Pro Faux painter.......2000-03-22

Alot of inspiration for faux painters w/how-to introduction for beginners. Discusses composition, hightlights, shadows, perspective and how to transfer large scale drawings. Sets out several projects and gives you materials list, and instructions to complete projects. Also includes a multitude of pictures for ideas. I used this book when I began and still use it for inspiration. I also give to my clients to look through for ideas. Although it mainly discusses interior murals, it does have a chapter that takes you through execution of an exterior mural & several ext. mural ideas. The only fault: Doesn't talk about finishing or sealing, or whether it's needed, but still a keeper.

Interesting and quirky!.......2004-05-31

As an American of Norwegian descent who was raised in England, I found this book very interesting. Nimmo tells his tale in a quite funny way (VERY British), and skillfully weaves in old tales of Viking history. He points out the oft-overlooked impact of Norse upon English custom and language. The descriptions of the natives of Scandinavia he runs into give the reader a taste for having spoken to them personally. His run-ins with various types are often absurdly humorous. If you have a passing interest in Scandinavia and/or its history, this is a great book to pick up. It's very readable: you'll fly right through his skilled prose. In terms of style, think of this book as a combination of Paul Theroux and Douglas Adams!

Definitive Single Volume History of the Spanish American War.......2006-03-31

Musicant has a difficult problem in writing about a two ocean war that was fought by different schedules and hampered by spotty communications between combatants. However, by breaking down the events of the war into a roughly chronological sequence, Musciant is able to produce a narrative that allows readers to see the war at a strategic and tactical level. Naturally there are some overlaps of chronology as the Battle of Manila Bay was fought and won before things really got set up around Cuba and Puerto Rico but these things do not disrupt the overall quality of his richly detailed narrative. Definitely worth a place on the shelf of anyone interested in 19th Century American History.

Gack. A boring, difficult, unrewarding read........2004-07-30

This thing...this book of Musicant's...isn't hitting on all of its cylinders. Musicant is incapable of maintaining a coherent chronology. His source material is limited. The work is not difficult intellecutally -- in fact, the opposite -- but is made difficult by Musicant's consistently poor use of English; he so often puts adjectives in the wrong place that the reader frequently has to stop and try to figure out (or guess) what he means...the difference between

A wonderful military book. This book details the Spanish America war and its environs. it details the important figures like Mahan, Dewey, Roosevelt. It details the rise of guerrilla warfare in Cuba and the Phillipines. Nevertheless I felt it did not eleborate on the importance of the conflict internationally. It iverestimated the Americans as showsing the war to be won before it was fought. The reality of the conflict, the first defeat of a European power by a non-european power(the Russo-Japanese war was in 1905). Although one passage relates the newspaper jingoism detailing the first shots of the rugged americans against the sparkling halmets of the Spanish soldiers, it underestimates the impact of this war in which the Americans whiped european colonism off the face of the American continent.

A lively history of a largely forgotten event.......2002-03-26

It takes some skill to hold a reader's attention for 658 pages. Musicant generally succeeds in his narrative of the Spanish-American war. A specialist in naval history, Musicant gives particularly close attention to the naval battles at Manila and Santiago de Cuba. His description of the gallant but hopeless attempt by the Spanish fleet to escape from Santiago is gripping. Other striking sections describe the chaos of the American embarkation at Tampa and the suffering of American troops investing Santiago. In other parts of the book, the detailed accounts of military politics and preparations may lead many readers to skip ahead. The most disappointing part of the book is the last chapter titled "Empire," a very abbreviated commentary on "the dawn of the American century." The book is reasonably well served by its few maps and its black and white photographs.

Excellent Narrative Account of "The Splendid Little War".......2002-02-16

Being a Civil War buff and author who is considering doing a work on the Indian Wars, I have always been fascinated by that period between the Civil War and the turn of the century.

Especially on its effect on the U.S. Army as it fought both the Indian Wars and the Spanish American War under the leadership of former Civil War Generals, and Musicant does not disappoint.

Some of the names are familiar - Nelson Miles, Wesley Merritt, Admiral (George) Dewey,and of course, the Confederate Cavalry great "Fighting Joe" Joseph Wheeler. And the not-so-well known - men such as William Rufus Shafter, the corpulent former Union officer and presumed model for "Pecos Bill", who was named commander of the expeditionary forces in Cuba and who often clashed with both his superiors in Washington, and with one certain volunteer colonel by the name of Theodore Roosevelt.

To be fair, I haven't gotten to the military operations nor the logistical problems experienced by the U.S. Army - poisoned (embalmed) beef, lack of smokeless cartridges (the antiqudated Spanish Army was more "modern" in this respect), as Musicant's account is an excellent read. But he does effectively score the two Presidents who bungled into the Cuban morass - Cleveland, definitely the Bill Clinton of his time, and William McKinley, a man of great character and virtue but hamstrung by a senile Secretary of State (William Tecumseh Sherman's brother) and politico appointees as well as his own desire to please all.
The account of the destruction of the USS Maine which finally provoked McKinley is the finest that I have read.

Musicant shows great knowledge of the Cuban situation and of the Spanish predicament. I only wish that he had covered the infamous "Virginius" affair, when the American Captain Joseph Fry, a former Confederate hero, and a score of American sailors were brutally executed by Spanish authorities after trying to smuggle guns to Cuban insurgents. This happened during the time of Grant's Presidency, and it nearly then led to war with Spain...Who knows - it might have been George Armstrong Custer leading the charge up San Juan Hill instead of Teddy.

The US wasn't spoiling for a fight with Spain in 1873 - 25 years later, it was.

The atlas "Ukrainians of the Eastern Diaspora" is the first such publication concerning Ukrainians living outside their ethnic territory and scattered throughout the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union during the course of the last century.

The last Soviet census of 1989 enumerated more that 6.8 million Ukrainians outside Ukraine in the republics of the former Soviet Union alone. In addition, at least two million Ukrainians, according to official statistical data, reside in various countries of Europe, the Americas, and even Australia. They constitute the so-called "diaspora," a term that that become ever more current lately to denote the dispersal of Ukrainians beyond their historical homeland. The "Eastern Ukrainian diaspora" refers to the dispersion of Ukrainians on the territory of the former USSR outside Ukraine.

The maps of the atlas are based on the official censuses of 1897, 1926, 1959, 1970, 1979, and 1989. The principle of defining nationality in terms of self-identification was the one used by Soviet census takers. However, under a totalitarian regime, these censuses did not always establish the true numbers of national groups.
