Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Getting Started.......2007-01-04

Very informative and historical pictorial of the classic cracker home. The different floor plans and pictures of "still standing" structures in Florida are all part of our heritage and I find that very exciting.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding presentation of a special type of house........2005-09-10

A complete and thorough description of a type of architecture and therefore the culture. This book was meaningful to me because of my southern heritage and I live in a cracker house. I didn't know it was a cracker house until I read the book. The author is fun and easy to read and the information is great.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent summary of one of Florida vernaculars.......2002-08-13

Brief, but very informative, well documented and organized summary of a neglected (and marginal) theme in architectural history.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to vernacular architecture.......2002-03-14

A well-designed and thorough examination of Southern vernacular architecture. With its concetration on Florida 'Cracker' design, Haase discusses the unique limitations of the Florida climate and the adaptations made to regional styles. His clearly labelled diagrams and enthusiasm for the subject bring a welcome light to architecture that is too often overshadowed by the flamboyant designs of Addison Mizner and other South Florida styles.

    4 out of 5 stars very good.......2001-10-30

One of the best books about art techniques

i got here the brazilian translation of and old or diferent cover version, most of thoose books you buy for 5 or 6 bucks
teach how do do with some specific media, like one book for oil, other for watercolour, when you see you spent 200 bucks on a lot of small books ! they are good too, but thoose big photos take about the whole page, and really, what they teach could be only on 2 or 3 pages.

And that book teaches about everykind of art technique.

        Book Description

In Shooting Back from the Reservation, Native American children have photographed their daily lives, working with Jim Hubbard and his Shooting Back organization. 150 of these pictures are reproduced in rich duotones, complemented by the powerful prose and poetry of the children. This book offers an unrivaled opportunity to see and read about community and family within different tribes: the interiors of homes and playgrounds, and the natural splendor of the environment, as well as the man-made eyesores surrounding and texturing the reservations.

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Reservation life as captured by the young residents.......2006-06-11

This book is a collection of photos taken on Indian reservations around the country. They depict aspects of the lives of the residents that we hear about but never see. You can see some of the features of the poverty on the reservations, but most of what you see is children at play having a lot of fun. The Shooting Back Project puts cameras in the hands of children so what is unique about these photos is that children took them. The quality is higher than you would expect from children whose ages are measured in the lower double digits. They show us the world of a reservation child from the perspective of a reservation child.
All of the photos are in black and white, yet they reveal a colorful side of life on the reservations of America. They empower the photographers and send a strong message to the viewer.

                                  Book Description

This book studies a central but hitherto neglected aspect of Rousseau’s political thought: the concept of social order and its implications for the ideal society which he envisages. The antithesis between order and disorder is a fundamental theme in Rousseau’s work, and the author takes it as the basis for this study. In contrast with a widely held interpretation of Rousseau’s philosophy, Professor Viroli argues that natural and political order are by no means the same for Rousseau. He explores the differences and interrelations between the different types of order which Rousseau describes, and shows how the philosopher constructed his final doctrine of the just society, which can be based only on every citizen’s voluntary and knowing acceptance of the social contract and on the promotion of virtue above ambition. The author also shows the extent of Rousseau’s debt to the republican tradition, and above all to Machiavelli, and revises the image of Rousseau as a disciple of the natural-law school.

                                      Book Description

On Ordered Liberty goes beyond the liberal and conservative divide, asking its readers to think about the proper ends of human choice and actions in a free society. Beginning with the insights of Alexis de Tocqueville and some natural law sources, author Samuel Gregg suggests that integral law must be distinguished from most contemporary visions of freedom. This requires, he believes, a complete repudiation of utilitarian ideas as incompatable with human nature and further analysis of the basic but often neglected-question: what is man?

4 out of 5 stars Solid survey of an important topic.......2005-04-17

The preface includes this quote by Alexis de Tocqueville: "Nothing is more fertile than the art of being free, but nothing is harder than freedom's apprenticeship." (p.xii) This highlights the purpose of this book -- to describe and analyze the issues that have arisen in the post-aristocratic world of modern times. Liberty is nearly universally valued as a good thing, but defining what liberty really is and applying it correctly has produced much more difficulty. Gregg's book is a short but fruitful tour of the competing theories on how to preserve the liberty everyone so desires.

The first six chapters are organized by function: the first two chapters provide some philosophical background on the topic; the third chapter analyzes what people are talking about when they speak of liberty ("freedom to _____"); the fourth and fifth chapters concern how to make laws and establish a state, respectively, to preserve these rights; the sixth chapter discusses the role of nongovernmental associations and the importance of providing a check against the state's power if necessary.

Throughout these chapters, the same types of issues permeate the discussion. Does liberty carry with it a moral obligation to be virtuous and to require it of others? Is an appeal to an absolute standard of truth necessary in order to make the case for liberty? If the answers are yes, then what virtues or truths should they be? Can we rely on our human nature and capabilities as a guideline, or do we have to tailor our government to assume that left to our own devices, we will destroy ourselves? What principles do we use to mark out a position in between? Although ordered liberty is most associated with a question of designing an optimal government, this necessarily carries some assumptions about the nature of mankind, and this is not left out of the discussion.

The last chapter is a more informal and personal one, one in which the author discusses how the Catholic Church and individual Catholics should engage in the public debate, as well as the danger of having public policy expressed by people of faith disqualified because their motivations are labeled as religious in nature.

This is a good gateway book, complete with endnotes at the end of each chapter for further exploration.

Continuous images of ordered continua have been studied intensively since 1960, when S. Mardsic showed that the classical Hahn-Mazurkiewicz theorem does not generalize in the "natural" way to the nonmetric case. In 1986, Nikiel characterized acyclic images of arcs as continua which can be approximated from within by a sequence of well-placed subsets which he called T-sets. That characterization has been used to answer a host of outstanding questions in the area. In this book, Nikiel, Tymchatyn, and Tuncali study images of arcs using T-set approximations and inverse limits with monotone bonding maps. A number of important theorems on Peano continua are extended to images of arcs. Some of the results presented here are new even in the metric case.

I am a Civil War buff, having visited numerous battlefields and read many, many books on the topic. This volume serves nicely as an introductions to General McClellan and his role in re-building the shattered Union Army after the First Battle of Bull Run in the summer of 1861. It does a great job of describing the build-up to McClellan's Peninsular Campaign, which was his attempt to do a waterborne end run around the Confederate Army that was guarding Richmond, the Confederate capital.

However, I feel that it is mistitled because it only covers the first half of the Peninsular Campaign. The text stops when Lee takes over for the injured Joe Johnston so we read nothing about the conclusion of the Peninsular campaign, including a majority of the battles.

The book is beautifully illustrated and well-written. A novice to the Civil War will learn a lot, but even this old dog learned a couple of new things with this one.

4 out of 5 stars The Young Napoleon falls to take out Granny Lee.......2001-03-13

"Forward to Richmond" is certainly an ironic title for this volume in the Time-Life Civil War series that focuses on the Peninsular Campaign since this particular military fiasco was General McClellan's attempt to do an end run around the Confederate army. Because the topic is limited to a single volume, Ronald H. Bailey (and the Editors of Time-Life Books) cannot go into much depth in terms of the specific battles of the campaign, so you do not get as much detail as you do in those volumes on specific battles like Shiloh or Gettysburg. Chapter 1, "A Young Napoleon," provides a concise biography of the Union Army's commanding general as well as his efforts to train his troops to become soldiers. Chapter 2, "Clash at Ball's Bluff," relates the second defeat in battle suffered by the Federals (after First Manassas) because of unseasoned officers, failures of communication and a poorly run command structure. Chapter 3, "The Troublesome Commanders," looks at how the South was as much troubled by Beauregard's inactivity with the Confederate army as Lincoln was plagued by McClellan's slows with the Federals. Chapter 4, "'Stride of a Giant,'" covers the beginning of the Peninsular Campaign, with the Army of the Potomac finally breaking out of its confinement south of Yorktown. Chapter 5, "Victory Within Reach," makes a strong case for how McClellan snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. Chapter 6, "Stalemate in the Swamp," relates how the Battle of Seven Pines ended in a stalemate that still forced the Army of the Potomac to end the campaign. I for one would much rather have seen this book split in half, with the first three chapters turned into a volume that talks about how both sides were looking for commanding generals and the second dealing with the actual Peninsular campaign in considerable more detail. Being bottled up on the end of the James Peninsula is worth an entire chapter. All of these volumes make excellent use of contemporary photographs and illustrations, but "Forward to Richmond" contains many fine examples of watercolors from the time period. Whatever the shortcomings of the text, the accompanying images are first rate.

                                                        Book Description

Is it Americas historic destiny to be the last of the hegemons? Hegemonic states are very special countries that have simultaneously dominated the world both economically and politically and it seems increasingly likely that no country can follow the USA in this role. In this intellectual and creative tour de force, Peter Taylor, famous as the creator of world-systems political geography, examines hegemony as a concept in social practices and by using the experience of the three classic hegemonies, 17th-century Holland, 19th-century Britain and 20th-century America to provide a breathtaking new perspective on world history, political ideas and the nature of modernity. Professor Taylor weaves a rich tapestry of historical insight with arresting detail and innovative synthesis to show how for each hegemon political and economic dominance led to cultural power which shaped the entire world system. But in a fin de siecle world with little prospect of a new hegemonic order, are we perhaps facing the end of the world as we know it? In this constantly challenging, intriguing and original book the reader will find a compelling, disturbing yet exhilarating distillation of history, politics, economics, culture and ideology of the last four centuries. It will be the key book for students of politics, geography and history and for the general reader who wants to understand where todays world has come from and where it is going.

The title is a bit pompous. The book looks like another regurgitation of already well written world-systems garbage. Surprisingly, though, Peter Taylor has come up with something more readable than Arrighi's "The Long Twentieth Century" and perhaps more theoretically sound. I am currently writing a Masters thesis in political geography, and I was pleasantly surprised when I read this book after a plethora of others by Taylor and Arrighi. Having read a good dozen books on hegemony, this is my favorite one yet. If it weren't for the outrageous price (get it from the library!), it might be the book that would convert other structuralists over to world-systems theory. If you are into geohistorical analysis or hegemonic discourse you must read this book. Kudos to Doctor Taylor! Job well done. (His book "Modernities" was excellent too!)

This is the third of three volumes containing the proceedings of the International Colloquium 'Free Boundary problems: Theory and Applications', held in Montreal from June 13 to June 22, 1990.The main part of this volume studies the flow of fluids, an area which has led to many of the classical free boundary problems. The first two sections contain the papers on various problems in fluid mechanics. The types of problems vary fromthe collision of two jets to the growth of a sand wave. In the next two sections porous flow is considered. This has important practical applications in fields such as petroleum engineering and groundwater pollution. Some new and interesting free boundary problems in geology and engineering are treated in the final section.
