HEIGHTENING THE SENSES WITH COLOR.......2007-06-08

I feel that this author is very much aware of the feelings color evokes.
It has pages dedicated to different combinations of colours which are layered and clear. The interiors portrayed in this book are of varied themes. There are some good examples but there is a lack of new ideas.

A waste of money.......2005-06-30

Book was not very helpful. Does a poor job educating the reader in the basics of color harmony. For example, it does a very poor job explaining how to use the color wheel. I found a much better book from Better Homes and Gardens, "Color Schemes Made Easy", which was very hepful to me in understanding the basics of using colors that complement each other and is the book I used decorating my new home.

Useless.......2004-07-14

This book had absolutely no value for me. I was looking for something to help me coordinate existing colors and bring them together with the use of color. None of the colors are shown in examples. There are just pages and pages of blocks with colors in them. One of the worst books I have ever purchased.

Very helpful to the color-confused!.......2002-05-30

I bought this book to help me choose a paint for a central room in my house easily viewable from several different living areas. Plus, if you and your partner need to come to agreement, the book puts an "approved" stamp on several different combinations and that cuts down on the intense discussions families can get into when it is time to paint!
Don't buy this book if you don't like color and aren't willing to be adventurous. Perhaps Ms. Gill's Color Harmony: Naturals would be more your ticket.

Very helpful guide to color.......2002-05-13

I found this book a real insight for using colour. I have re-done my whole house with her insight, helping me when choosing paint by narrowing in to the hue and tone that I wanted in the room forthe effect I wanted to create.
This book is not for everyone. For those people SCARED of colour stay away. I think that is why it has done so poorly since many people are looking for just neutrals & white on beige schemes. She does have a section in the book on that but it like all of the sections it is on large. The guide to the book is using different colours and schemes instead of creating a whole that is boringly beige/white that sends the senses into shock.For while she is named Martha, M. Gill is not like Martha Stewart going for the bland and easily comfortable. Gill lets you explore colour all the while showing you before you enter how tint, tone, shade and hue will effect the overall design.
Enjoyable & inspiring. Truly opens your mind and senses to colour.

marvellous paintings.......2005-04-14

I really love the artwork in this book. But since I do not have very much experience in watercolorpainting I do not get very good results by following her instructions. I would not recommend it to a beginner, but to someone who already masters the basic skills. In any case it is a lovely book.

Shoots and Scores.......2006-12-22

Reuters, whose origins date back to the 1850s, is best known as a news service that provides reports to newspapers and broadcasters around the world. It established the Reuters News Pictures Service in 1985, and the group has become one of the world's leading providers of photos. It employs over 120 full-time photographers and the images they capture are used by roughly 1500 newspapers and magazines worldwide.

This is a beautiful book, with a wide variety of sports included : soccer, American Football, tennis, gymnastics, baseball, skiing, ice-hockey, boxing and cycling all feature. Each photo is accompanied by a short passage explaining the background to the shot. However, the pictures aren't always of the rich and famous : while the likes of Diego Maradona, Ernie Els, Michael Johnson, Zinedine Zidane, Michael Schumacher and even Ben Johnson appear, some of the better photos feature the amateurs and spectators. There's a streaker at golf's British open, herders in Tibet playing outdoor billiards and Jamaica's very eye-catching support from the 2002 World Cup Finals. There's even one from the Sumo ring that's bound to raise a smile. For me, though, the most spectacular shot was taken during Pamplona's famous bull-run. I suspect I'm not alone : one newspaper in Germany apparently ran it under the headline "How well is the photographer ?". The only photos that may put some off come from the world of bloodsports. For example, there's one from the Waterloo Cup (hare thankfully intact) and another from the bullring (featuring a very bloodied bull that doesn't have too long left). However, even allowing for that, this is still a book I would highly recommend.

Sip a Cup of Gevalia with Don Lago.......2006-06-17

When I noticed that this book is published by the University of Iowa Press, I was a little apprehensive. Would it be dry and academic? No. The book is a good read, warm, entertaining, charming and witty.

The author's purpose was to retrace his Swedish roots, but beyond that to understand the experience of Scandinavians in America. So, while the book has a strong Swedish motif, he includes Danes, Norwegians and Finns--although he found that the latter consider themselves to be non-Scandinavians.

He uses his imagination and humor to develop themes supplying context and meaning to his searches. The humor is often at the author's expense as real life tramples over his literary constructs. Along the way the reader is enchanted by the many stories of people and places that Lago scatters throughout this fine book. In a gentle and always fascinating style he illustrates the many contributions that Scandinavian immigrants have made to American life. He is a good writer and readers will enjoy his clear, supply prose.

Something that I really like about the book is that although his travels and tales are lighthearted, the author develops some deep and penetrating insights about what it means to be an American, what America is and what it means to the world. In these meditations, Lago gives us his own thoughts, not citations and footnotes. In Swedish style, this is done modestly and in a quiet voice. It is clear that he would like nothing more than to share a good discussion about his themes and conclusions with his readers, who will feel that they are holding a conversation with Don Lago, hopefully over a steaming cup of Gevalia coffee.

It is now over 45 years since I left Sweden for USA. Although I quite well follow what is happening in the Swedish-American press I was delighted to learn about so many more places with a Swedish background and history. Buying five books for gifts this Christmas may be an indication how I rate this book.
Because I live in Phoenix, AZ, I just might drive up to Flagstaff one day in search for a certain little cabin. I just would love to meet Don Lago.

When Don Lago went looking for his Swedish roots, it was originally to capture memories that would be lost as Alzheimer's disease ravaged his father's mind. Lago's search began with a recreation of a trip his father had taken years before to Granna, Sweden, the Lago ancestral hometown. That journey convinced Lago that his Swedish roots should matter to him, although he "wasn't sure exactly what they should mean." To find out, he initiated annual trips to Scandinavia and soon extended his study to American Scandinavia: "After I had stayed in Lund, Sweden, I was curious to see Lund, Wisconsin." A former political activist, book reviewer, and kayaking instructor, Lago lives in Arizona, but one could assume from this work that he is rarely home. The account of his peregrinations is the beautiful and thoughtful On the Viking Trail. So much more than a personal account or family tribute, Viking Trail tells of the hardships of immigration, the importance of community, and the roots of American attitudes toward the land.

In keeping with his Scandinavian sense of modesty, Lago is surpassingly humble about the book he has written here. On a postcard from a Motel 6 somewhere in Iowa, he wrote me that Viking Trail would be of interest only to those of Scandinavian heritage. I'm only half way through but I must stop to urge Scandinavian Americans everywhere to read and reread this wise, wonderful and informative exploration of what it means to be a Scandinavian American. An importnat unit history.......2002-02-03

The 11th Airborne Division was activated at Camp Mackall North Carolina on February 25, 1943, and was primarily composed of former glider troops with some Airborne veterans. Immediately following activation, the 11th Airborne Division began jump training, and was ready to be transported overseas barely a year later. In early 1944, the 11th Airborne Division was moved to San Francisco, California, and ordered to prepare for embarkation to the Pacific Theater.

They were sent to New Guinea, where they trained in jungle warfare techniques, prior to the invasion of the Philippines, in November. The 11th Airborne Division landed at Leyte Beach, the Philippines, on November 18, 1944. They relieved 24th and 37th Infantry Divisions, and their objective was to clear a mountain pass from Burauen to Ormoc. After three 3 months of tough fighting, including hand-to-hand combat, the Japanese were driven from the pass and surrounding heights.

Members of the 11th Airborne Division rested and were resupplied when they reached Ormoc. On January 26, 1945 the 11th Airborne Division landed at Nasgubu Beach, Luzon, approximately 70 miles from Manila. Their mission was to remove the enemy from Highway 17 and to link up with the Allied forces that were attacking Manila. After just 5 days, the 11th Airborne Division accomplished their mission and broke through the enemy defenses on Tagaytay Ridge. The 551th Parachute Infantry Regiment conducted a combat drop to reinforce the main body of the Division.

After capturing Fort McKinley, Clark field, and Nichols field, the 11th Airborne Division joined the 1st Cavalry Division and the 37th Infantry Division in the attack on Manila. Following Manila's liberation, the 11th Airborne Division launched a daring raid behind enemy lines and liberated 2,200 Allied POWs from the Los Banos Internment Camp. Following the completion of this mission, the 11th Airborne engaged in mopping up operations in the southern areas of Luzon. In May 1945, the Division was placed into reserve in the Philippines, to rest, resupply, and acquire replacements, in preparation for Operation Olympic, the invasion of the Japanese home islands, which was never to occur.

The 11th Airborne Division moved to Okinawa on Aug. 10, 1945, to escort Gen. Douglas MacArthur into Japan and to spearhead the occupation. The 11th Airborne Division landed at Atsugi Airdrome, near Tokyo, on Aug. 30, 1945, and occupied the area in and around Yokohama. In September 1945, when they moved to northern Japan and assumed responsibility for Akita, Yamagata, Miyagi and Iwate Prefectures.

Later, the 11th Airborne division took over control of Amori, Hokkaido, Fukushima, and Prefectures, controlling almost half the island of Honshu and all the island of Hokkaido. The11th Airborne Division remained on occupation duty until 1949 when they were relieved and sent to Camp Campbell Kentucky.
