A great resource.......2003-08-19
I really don't think that any artist can survive with just one book on the shelf. This book is a great resource with beautiful step by step photographs. I recommend it to someone with a little experience and foundation. This book is not too intensive but also does not hold your hand at every step. A resource to add to your library. It helped me relax my style a bit.
Technical rendering...........2001-09-30
Ann Pember, author of PAINTING CLOSE-FOCUS FLOWERS IN WATERCOLOR has a BFA from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston in fashion design and illustration. Before she became a free-lance illustrator, she worked as a commercial artist for many years. Photos in her book show the professional studio where she works. Technically, her work is nearly perfect. I don't particularly care for her rendering of her subject matter as it stikes me as too "commercial" and not very painterly at all, but much can be learned from her book if you have had no other exposure.
Ms. Pember's background in fashion design and illustration are apparent in her work. She takes the reader from photographs of flowers to watercolors of those photographed flowers in several steps. She reveals how the eye is attracted by asymetry (offsetting of the center) and the placement of elements; how backlighting and focused lighting affect the appearance of the subject; how surfaces and background affect the paint and matter in the execution of a watercolor. She spends some time addressing color, but Ms. Pember is not a colorist. She is more concerned with line and the arrangement of elements in a design.
The end result from my perspective are flowers that are somewhat overcontrolled, although she gives the unpracticed eye the exact opposite impression. In the end, her flowers are contrived and not original. The watercolorist can acquire some interesting tips for creating pleasing paintings, but if producing art for commercial purposes is not your goal you may find Pember's book less rewarding.
Capturing Flowers "Up-Close and Personal".......2000-09-08
I love looking at this book! For years I have been filing away myriads of floral photos with the hope that one day I might attempt to capture them in paint. I muse over these photos from time to time wondering just how a painter might do them justice. I need wonder no more. In Ann Pember's "Painting Close-Focus Flowers in Watercolor", she has been able to demonstrate a variety of step-by-fluid-step techniques to bring high drama to the world of simple blooms. Her close-ups of hollyhocks, gloxinias; and peonies float upon the pages which are jam-packed with carefully chosen, eye-pleasing colors. Thankfully, the vibrancy of Ms. Pember's palette has been well-reproduced in the printing process. There is so much valuable information packed into this book. One should read it from cover to cover initially to pick up all the helpful hints. What a wealth of knowledge Ms. Pember has shared with her readers including: preferences for specific papers, paints and brushes; how to avoid turning paints into "mud"; and my toughest assignment - how to see shapes and values as patterns; to mention a few. Ann Pember's close-up compositions are outstanding. Even if my attempts pale in comparison to this well-seasoned artist's, she is very encouraging. She reinforces the idea that given some degree of perseverence and practice, we too may develop our own means of capturing nature's beauties "up-close and personal".

"One of the medium's brilliant mavericks." —Time.com
The Little Man: Short Strips, 1980–1995 is a collection of short-story works by the celebrated and bestselling Louis Riel cartoonist Chester Brown. From his early experimental comedic surrealism to his later autobiographical and essay strips, we see not a major talent in development but a fully realized storytelling virtuoso. Included are his early autobiographical stories “Helder” (a story about a young man’s tentativeness when pursuing a woman), “Showing Helder” (a blow-by-blow account of the construction of the previous story), and “Danny” (a strangely compelling moment-by-moment account of Brown waking up and trying to avoid contact with a fellow rooming-house tenant). Other standouts are Brown’s controversial essay on schizophrenia (specifically his own mother’s) and various medical views on this baffling disease, and the title story, “The Little Man,” a Freudian classroom romp fantasy by a adolescent Brown that ties into the schizophrenia essay in a surprising way. The acclaimed compendium, culled mostly from his groundbreaking comic book series Yummy Fur, provides a fascinating insight into Brown’s psyche; he rounds out the collection with exacting notes on each story.
Customer Reviews:
Acquired Taste For the Bizarre.......2001-11-10
Chester Brown is an eclectic, yet diverse innovator. Upon first glance his drawings & artwork look crude & unfamilar, but upon further inspection one becomes engrossed in his unusual storytelling. His stories range from the bizarre and surreal as in his Yummy Fur stories, to the autobiographical, which deals with the growing pains of adolescence to even Biblical and historical, yet they take on a mixture of emotions from endearing, to humorous, to heartbreak and shocking. Chester is a true originator.
surrealist pretense.......2001-05-29
Brown is a guy who can neither write well nor draw well, so to try disguise these rather obvious facts he uses the tried and true formula of inventing artificially outrageous or surreal situations, replacing shock value for adult themes or visual attractiveness. This book won't change your life or even entertain you. It exists so that funnybook fans can pretend to be interested in it and insult people who don't "understand" it, when there is nothing here to understand. Lovecraft or Dali Brown is not; just a pretender.
Like eating rusty staples. One...by one...by one..........1999-08-04
He never fails to confound, delight, shock, nauseate, charm and confound again with his way of somehow keeping one gnarled claw rooted in the sacred and the other hoof equally grounded in the scatological. Now if only he'd reprint ED THE HAPPY CLOWN, but with its complete final Yummy Fur disgressions into the inner workings of the First Family. Anyway, "The Little Man" is priceless.
Wonderful Comic.......1999-05-07
Chester Brown is one of the greatest comics artist ever and in this book you'll see why. This book collects various stories from Brown's acclaimed comic Yummy Fur and some stories done for now defunct anthology titles, including some of his earliest works. The stories range from sci-fi to horror to religous to autobiographical. Almost all of the stories are superb. But the real value of the book is in the way it shows Chester Brown's growth and development into a master of his artform.

Book Description
Lilies and Fireweed is packed with unforgettable stories of women surviving in the unforgiving, sometimes hostile environment of pioneer and aboriginal British Columbia. Based on award-winning journalist Stephen Hume's popular series "Frontier Women of BC" that appeared in the Vancouver Sun in 2002, this collection of essays contains stories, photographs and other materials that have never before been published.
From hospitals to dance halls, and from the classroom to the cannery floor, this insightful pictorial history examines indigenous and immigrant women's positions in the workplace, home and wilderness. Hume delves into the lives of aboriginal and pioneer women who had an important and multifaceted influence on the development of British Columbia.
We meet women such as 17-year-old Frances Barkley, who insisted on accompanying her husband on a merchant voyage to British Columbia in 1786 and subsequently twice circumnavigated the world; Lady Amelia Douglas - a Cree woman and wife of Governor James Douglas - who had her own important but often overlooked role in the forging of British Columbia; Mrs. Washiji Oya, the first Japanese woman to settle in Canada in 1887; and Maria Pollard Grant, who, in 1895, became the first woman elected to public office in BC.
Brimming with fascinating historical photographs, Lilies and Fireweed brings to light the forgotten stories of mothers, dance-hall girls, artists, teachers and adventurers that are as enthralling and diverse as BC itself.
Book Description
Between birth and age five, your child has up to thirty IQ points at stake. Scientists now know that the human brain is undergoing a constant and dramatic transformation in the first years of life. During this peak time of development, every activity and experience leaves an indelible mark on your baby’s brain, for better or worse. The right kind of stimulation and nutrition will create connections in the brain that promote intelligence and raise IQ. The wrong kinds of activities and foods can stifle intellectual development, destroy brain cells, and leave your child more vulnerable to learning or behavior problems down the road. So, what can you do during the first five years to ensure that your child is primed to excel?
The good news is that raising a smarter child is easier than you think. It doesn’t require making an investment in expensive equipment or high priced tutors. It’s as simple as playing the right games, serving the right foods, and maintaining a brain-enhancing environment in your home by eliminating common household toxins. In Raise a Smarter Child by Kindergarten by Dr. David Perlmutter, you’ll learn easy and highly effective strategies that can vastly improve your child’s brain power and reduce his or her chances of developing ADD and ADHD. For example, you can:
•
Stimulate Memory: Changing a component on the over-the-crib mobile every week makes the baby compare what was there before to what’s there now, reinforcing memory pathways in the brain that are critical for learning.
•
Spread out those shots: Schedule more frequent trips to the pediatrician for vaccinations, so that fewer shots are administered at once. Flooding the immune system with a cocktail of different vaccines can damage the nervous system.
•
Get rid of toxins: Protecting a child from neurotoxins found in foods, toys and even baby bottles can help preserve precious IQ points.
Dr. Perlmutter provides a scientifically backed food and supplement plan for children and nursing mothers and details the many brain-building activities that you can do with your child. In addition, he reveals the numerous toys and household products that contain harmful, brain-damaging toxins and shows how to identify and combat common childhood problems like ADD and food allergies that may affect your child’s development.
Your job over the first five years is to help your child build the best brain possible. With Dr. Perlmutter’s help, you can mine the countless opportunities you have each day to make your child smarter, happier and better prepared to excel.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Guide.......2007-09-19
I refer to this book constantly through the different growth stages that seem to occur way too fast. I found the info comprehensive; not many resources look at development from all of these angles. It's a great guide and brings attention to so many things that I would never have thought about.
Buy it for the information on immunizations alone.......2007-08-21
Which was very helpful. It's good, with lots of ideas for what to do with your baby on those days when you're out of steam.
Only the beginning section is good..........2007-08-06
I will be perfectly honest and tell you I was beyond excited to order and read this book. When it arrived I stopped reading my other book and began this one. The first 100 pages were stuffed full of brain-building games and tips for parents on how to help their children develop a love of learning and learn while doing it.
Then I began chapter 7, which is entitled "Feeding the Newborn Brain for Optimal Performance". This chapter actually began to lay out a diet for the "best" brain performance. This is NOT backed up by any scientific data and pretty much consists of the author telling you to feed your children organic everything and avoid white flour and refined sugar FOREVER. (The Atkins diet for your baby? I don't think so!! Asking your children to skip Halloween altogether? Good luck!!) On page 146 when he specifically mentions that Bisquick mix, with it's refined flour, should not ever be fed to children I put the book down. I am a 26 year old college graduate who owns a jewelry design business and I was always an honor roll student in high school. I remember fondly several weekend mornings eating a big breakfast with my family, which included Bisquick waffles, and I don't feel like they could have had any negative impact at all in fueling my carb-run brain.
The book continues with talk about environmental toxins and mentions several test kits you should buy to test your home to see if they are present, even though there is little you can do to treat them. (By the way, the author is a neurologist - a brain organ doctor - NOT a developmental psychologist - a brain development & function doctor!!)
Also, if you have chosen to formula feed your newborn, I would suggest not reading this book. He advocates breastfeeding so firmly and repeatedly throughout the book that it made me feel paniced and my son is exclusively breastfed!
I know we want what is the very best for our child's brain and I know what we are looking for in this type of book. I would very strongly recommend "Einstein Never Used Flash Cards" by Hirsh-pasek and Golnkoff, who are both child development psychologists who hold Ph.D.s in their field. You will find it to have the wisdom you are seeking.
Raise A Little Einstein!.......2007-07-30
I really enjoyed this book. There is plenty of excellent information on how to raise your own little Einstein. In a nutshell, Dr David Perlmutter (a renowned neurologist) believes that from the ages of 0 to 5 there exists a window of opportunity to optimize your child's brain. He claims 30+ additional IQ points can be earned during these critical, formative years.
Dr Perlmutter provides solid advice on nutrition, environment, games, TV, computers, video games, and more.
Some of my favorites:
* Start using a computer at age 3
* Formal music training can begin at age 4
* Video games and TV are not evil! (As long as they are controlled by the parent!)
* Focus on the creative and not repetitive, robotic memorization.
* Stay away from things such as DEET and other environmental toxins
* Go organic
* Daily multivitamin and supplements
It is slightly tacky that Perlmutter *occasionally* mentions his own brand of supplements. However, I am not sure that any competing formulations exist. Nonetheless, I will forgive him this slight negative. No biggie...
I highly recommend "Raise a Smarter Child by Kindergarten". Every parent should read this NOW so that they can take complete advantage of this five year window of opportunity. Your child will thank you!
Comprehensive Advice.......2007-06-06
I was a little skeptical of this book based on the title but the advice is both commonsense and backed up my research. The book provides information on how to build a better brain using games, creative reading, nutrition advice, advice on helpful supplements (such as DHA supplements for nursing mothers), developmental toys and harmful toxins to avoid.
I have two complaints. First, Dr. Perlmutter did often recommend his own brand of supplements, which I thought was a little tacky. Second, he recommended games to play with babies and toddlers but didn't give advice on how to handle a child who doesn't want to cooperate. I don't believe in forcing small children to learn something, so I was unable to play some of the games with my child. Some information on how to positively engage her would have been helpful.

Excellent reference tool on western forts.......2005-12-19
In the introduction to this book, Frazer refers to his compilation of military forts as "brief biographies." Based on that description, the book is an excellent reference tool in identifying by name, location, length of service, and summary purpose all the known forts located west of the Mississippi River up to 1898.
The book is arranged by state, with forts listed therein alphabetically. Although Frazer warns that locations are only approximate, they are still given with enough detail to place them fairly accurately on a topo map. When forts changed locations even by just a few miles (Ft. Hall, ID, for example), both forts are described. This is basically a listing, and most of the forts are detailed only briefly; when important events occurred, however, they are mentioned (Ft. Cobb, OK, for example, being attacked by Indians on October 23, 1862). Even forts that were unnamed or in existence for only a few months are included.
I have used this book often, either for quick identification or as a stepping stone to more detailed investigations. The bibliography is one of the most thorough I've seen on the subject (36 pages long). The index is also very comprehensive, containing all the names and places mentioned in the text. As a reference tool for identifying forts and gleaming a brief account of their "biographies," Frazer's book is superb.
I disagree - very poor.......2004-08-15
If you only care about the opening and closing dates, who it was named after, and a one sentence reason as to why it was established, then this bare bones book is for you. Do not expect any other information OF IMPORTANCE here. No history of important engagements near or involving each fort is given, which I find incredibly negligent.
Examples: NO mention is made of the Fetterman Massacre in the entry on Fort Phil Kearny, or the Wagon Box Fight for that matter.
NO mention is made of the Hayfield Fight in the entry on Fort C.F. Smith.
NO mention is made of the two huge attacks on Julesberg, CO by a thousand Cheyennes in which the town was burned to the ground just outside Fort Sedgwick. I could go on.
Don't expect ANY information on important engagements the various forts may have been a part of. However if you are really curious as to whether the fort was turned over to the Dept. of the Interior on its abandonment, then this book is for you. That fact is always listed. This book has exactly 4 photographs and 5 drawings.
Though out of print, I recommend Herbert M. Hart's western fort series: "Pioneer Forts of the West", "Forts of the Far West", and "Old Forts of the Northwest". These books have hundreds of B&W photos, detailed histories of engagements the forts partook in, as well as opening and closing dates, and a diagram of almost every fort discussed. You could just pick up the whole series (used) for less than the price of this poor excuse.
I agree... a fundamental research tool for historians.......2004-04-19
My hardback copy of this work was printed in 1977 and it shows the wear. It's tried repeatedly to sneak back out of view on my bookshelves, but I always hunt it down and bring it back to the front where it belongs. I've referred to it thousands of times in my researches, in addition to reading through it entirely on several occasions. The data concerning the openings and closings of the individual forts, the reasoning for the need for each and the mentions of events and units involved are all invaluable.
This work has gone out of print several times through the years, but it always comes back and pays its own way for new readers.
If you love the history of the west you need to own this book.
TOTALLY NECESSARY FOR WESTERN STUDIES........1997-11-06
This book names the forts, presidios, and posts west of the Mississippi River to 1898, and not only does the author give the location but he gives some historical facts. If I had the money, I would take this book, get me a good travel map and visit each of the places mentioned! Last month I went to several Texas forts, an old Presidio and an Arizona fort. The book was invaluable!

Book Description
Behavioural ecotoxicology is an emerging field dealing with the effects of environmental pollutants on the behaviour of animals. Behavioural techniques derived from experimental psychology, behavioural pharmacology and neurotoxicology are applied to detect and characterise changes in animals living in the environment exposed to various pollutants. Behavioural effects are then interpreted in an ecological context considering the long-term relevance of these changes at both the individual and population level.
