    Book Description

The debacle of the Second Crusade in 1148 caused the Crusader States to realise the necessity of developing a more cautious strategy. The original expansionist spirit largely disappeared, and the Crusader States made priorities of strengthening their existing fortifications and towns and building new castles. These structures encompassed core aspects of Western European military architecture with the integration of rapidly developing Arab and Islamic traditions. Following Fortress 21: 'Crusader Castles in the Holy Land 1097–1192', this book examines the design, development and defensive principles of some of the best-known Crusader fortifications and castles, including Crac des Chevaliers, Castel Blanc, Arsuf, Margat, Atlit, Montfort and Acre.

Tom has a real gift for capturing the mood of a scene. His quick gestural sketches develop into vivid paintings, and it's a great book to use to "mimic" a master. The book's in a nice sketchbook format, and has several "lessons" to acquaint the reader with a variety of techniques and tips for drawing and painting realistic travel scenes.

The history of gay male erotic images is largely undocumented. Even when the material has been available, "good taste" and "common decency"--those concepts used to stop all talk about sex--have prevented their display. Thomas Waugh's full-length, profusely illustrated study is a breakthrough book that has information and analysis enough for three books. Thoughtful, smart, and well-written, Hard to Imagine uncovers a visual history of gay male eroticism that few know. It chronicles the complicated history of homosexual desire and how it has been depicted and repressed.

            Book Description

Spanning more than a century of photography and film, Hard to Imagine is the first visual chronicle of the evolution of gay male image culture, from the canonical works of "art" photography and cinema to the private and often highly explicit productions of amateurs. This comprehensive work explores a vast, eclectic tradition in its totality, analyzing the aesthetics of the visual imagery, its production, circulation, and consumption, and broad social and legal implications.

            Customer Reviews:

            5 out of 5 stars Amazing Book.......2002-07-10

This book collects the amazing research the author has done on physique photography, magazines and gay porn of the 30s, 40s, and 50s. It is great stuff, presented with a smart and detailed analysis. The only downside is the format, a weird and pricey mix of scholarly tome and coffeetable book. With the boom in "visual culture" and gay studies, it's a pity Cambridge has never brought this out in paper: it would be a surefire hit.

            4 out of 5 stars WOW.......1998-04-05

This is truly a great book..especially for vintage gay porn buffs... Its written and produces with an college text book feel.... which on one hand.. is good.. gives it a lot of depth.. and smarts.. but.. with the $75 price tag.. i was a bit dissapointed.. was hoping for some really great quality photos.. while the photo's quality arent bad at all. quite clear and sharp. was hoping for something along the lines of art book quality... so ifyou looking for an art coffee table book.. this really isnt one.. but if you r looking for indepth analysis (still with loads of pictures) of early gay porn.. then this is for U!!!!!!!

Will Alison Bechdel ever put a foot wrong? Will she ever lose her sense of humor about the goofy vicissitudes of the lesbian community? If this seventh book of her serial cartoon collection about Mo, the feminist bookseller everywoman and her cohorts, is any indication, I'd have to say no. Bechdel here sets her wry and wonderful sights on the explosion of lesbian erotica.

                Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the funniest cartoons being drawn.......1999-06-24

I love Bechdel's characters (my husband - yes, husband - says I remind him a *lot* of Mo when I go off on a tangent). The Madwimmin-a-go-go benefit at the end had us both laughing till we cried. Long live the mad women of Madwimmen!

                5 out of 5 stars A must read!.......1998-06-27

After having read the occasional DTWOF in the local gay and lesbian press, I finally bought this collection of strips. I was incredibly impressed! Not only is this book *VERY* funny, but all of the characters seem to embody the diversity withing the gay and lesbian community. I couldn't put it down!

5 out of 5 stars Alison Bechdel just keeps getting better.......1997-07-31

Warning: if you haven't read this book, this review is a spoiler!

I really liked this latest book by Ms. Bechdel. It's nice to see good things happening for the characters: Mo stirs herself and goes after Sidney instead of whining about her lack of a girlfriend. Ginger finally gets her PhD. Toni's parents seem to be ok her lesbianism, and Clarice and Toni revitalize their partnership which has been languishing since the arrival of Raffi, and one of the most important items, Clarice's second parent adoption is approved!

I can't wait for the next book! Unfortunately, Ms. Bechdel only comes out :-) with a new book every 2 years or so. I hope she never stops this comic strip

5 out of 5 stars The seventh, and quite wonderful, DTWOF book!.......1997-07-23

This book ties up cliffhangers from the previous collection, "Unnatural Dykes ..."

We find out what happens with Toni, her mother, Raffi, Clarice and Gloria. Time is closing in on Ginger and ther dissertation. Madwimmin Books starts to suffer as the new "Buns and Noodle" superstore rakes in the cash. We get to see more of Audry and Jezanna. Lois has a secret.

And Mo has an unwelcome admirer.

This book is great! Bechdel manages to tie up loose ends and still keep a coherant story that has a climax that's worth the entire series (as if you needed more of a reason).

Pick this one up to complete your collection thus far. Pick all of them up if you haven't started yet! It sure beats the heck out of daytime soaps.

                        Book Description

Intellectual developments pioneered by scholastic natural philosophers of the fourteenth century constituted a critical stage in the emergence of scientific thought. Beneath these technical developments lay a profound reconceptualization of nature. The purpose of this book is to analyze the components of this reconceptualization, and to speculate on the influences that shaped it. It argues that the transformation of the conceptual model of the natural world c. 1260-1380 was strongly influenced by the rapid monetization of European society during the same period.

A fascinating study of the impact of economic change on medieval natural philosophy and theology. According to Kaye, competing economic models created tensions between a more theocentric world view and one that could accommodate the workings of an independent and self-regulating marketplace. He also provides fascinating insight into the attempts -- chiefly in France -- to revalue and control currency, which provided vivid examples to medieval observers of what can go wrong with misguided efforts to intervene in supply and demand. The Middle Ages appears surprisingly modern in this clearly written study, which should be of interest not only to scholars but to any intelligent reader interested in learning more about the beginnings of economic history.

Intellectual historians have traditionally done a bad job at making connections between thinkers' thoughts and thinkers' environments. Kaye succeeds by pointing out economy's influence on philosphy. I am convinced.

                          Book Description

In 1905, Albert Einstein published five scientific articles that fundamentally changed the world-view of physics: The Special Theory of Reativity revolutionized our concept of space and time, E=mc² became the best-known equation in physics.
On the occasion of the 100th aniversary of Einstein's "annus mirabilis" 1905, the UNESCO declared the year 2005 the "World Year of Physics", in order to draw attention to the impact of physics. The Max Planck Institute for the History of Science dedicates an exhibition to the easily most important scientist of the 20th century.
The exhibition is accompanied by a two-volume catalogue . The elaborate, four-colour first volume (Albert Einstein - Chief Engineer of the Universe: Einstein's Life and Work in Context) mirrors the structure of the exhibition, containing detailed, easy-to-understand information on the three large exhibition areas
                          - World-view and discovery
                          - Einstein - his life
                          - Einstein's world today.
On the basis of Einstein's innovative theoretical work, the text explains changing historical world-views as well as the conditions under which science develops, shedding light on the bumpy path of Einstein's life and the political and social revolutions which formed its background. This bridge between scientific and cultural history opens up a perspective on Einstein's biography which goes far beyond the traditional picture of this exceptional science genius.
The book concludes with a depiction of the effects of Einstein's work on today's science and culture. A DVD with animations and film sequences from the exhibition is enclosed.
The second volume is a bilingual collection of source material (Documents of a Life's Pathway/Dokumente eines Lebensweges). Letters and manuscripts by Einstein as well as photographs of people and objects are reproduced in high quality and invite the reader to study the exhibition's sources more intensively.
