Gone: Photographs of Abandonment on the High Plains
ASIN: 1904332080 |
Book Description
Over a 7-year period, Tony and Eva Worobiec, two of the greatest photographers of all time, traveled the dusty paths of rural America, particularly in the Dakotas, Montana, and Wyoming. The fruits of their journey are pictures so poignant and evocative of the American West that they are the photographic equivalent of a Steinbeck novel. Each amazing photo vividly reveals the struggle for survival, of a disappearing way of life, in the forgotten countryside and backroads of the U.S. In the often harsh and unforgiving landscape, the Worobiecs shot affecting and beautiful pictures of abandoned farms, schools, gas stations, grain elevators and tractors, diners, and trucks.
Tony's pictures are large format, shot in black and white, and then hand tinted. The results resemble postcards from the 1950s. Eva shoots directly in color for a more starkly modern aspect. Both achieve magnificent, and ultimately emotionally touching, results.
Along with the photographs are the words of the remaining residents, who speak sadly of better times, the friends and neighbors for whom things didn't work out, and of their own, once-flourishing piece of abandoned America.
This remarkable achievement is both an exquisite photography book and a commentary on the American way of life.
Customer Reviews:
If this book appeals to you.....BUY IT!!!.......2007-05-20
This book is nicely made, of excellent 'physical' quality and full of fantastic images. If you are looking for images with the depth and gravitas' of the Westons or Ansel Adams look elsewhere, but as a lighter form of visual interest the images do not disappoint. I have not gotten around to reading the extensive text, but it too looks well thought out and intriguing. Yes there are a lot of photographs depicting cars and some are arguably 'samey' but there are LOTS of images full stop. A fantastic (large) inspiring book that will be treasured not only by monochrome photographers but the curious adveturer type possibly considering a similar project. It certainly resonated with me. The ideal browse when I am tired of 'intense' photography and need something more casual and thinking about going 'walkabout'.
Abandoned but thankfully not forgotten........2003-12-31
Fortunately for a lot of photographers abandoned man-made America seems to be just about everywhere and what a visual treat it produces. This handsome, large (check out the dimensions in the Product Details above) book of photos is a cut above the usual offering though. Rather than shoot the predictable broken and rusty commercialism everywhere the Worobiec's had the great idea of capturing one particular area of the Nation, the northwest. Here the railroads were the catalyst to opening up the landscape with towns created about every ten miles or so to service track and train. Predictably many of these settlements lacked natural resources and decent farmland so it was inevitable that the weather, depression, and technical advances in transport made so many of these towns uneconomic and many folk just left.
What I find amazing is the nature of the leaving. Many photos show inside abandoned houses still with kitchen units, phones, furniture and personal effects. Page sixty-five shows a wall calendar for July 1959 in a house in Wildrose, Nebraska and as the caption explains these were useful indicators to reveal the date of the owner's departure. Sometimes the Worobiec's found small schools abandoned, as the photo on page 117 shows, the floor awash with textbooks. As expected there are many photos of abandoned vehicles (possibly thirty-six was just a bit too many) surrounded by vegetation, rich pickings nowadays for collectors, I bet.
Another reason why I like this book is because 'Ghosts in the Wilderness' is not just a collection of photos but a travelogue as well, six chapters have lively and interesting essays about the social and economic aspects of the area. These words give more meaning to the poignancy of the images.
The printing and design is excellent, the photos are mostly one to a page with generous white, black and light grey backgrounds. I do have a criticism of the production though, the last five pages show all the photos as thumbnails with the relevant technical details, all this information could easily have been accommodated on the page with the photo and so avoid having to keep turning to the back.
I think the Worobiec's have done a wonderful job producing a book of regional photography. Oh yes, thank you Mark and Sarah who gave me this lovely book as a Christmas present.

The real liberalism.......2005-05-14
This is what liberalism ment to be, this is a real liberal.
"I was a socialist as long as I had not studied political economy", states Raymond Aron and that is just the begining of a wonderful and objective radiography of the agitated periods Aron lived through. We find here one of the first warnings on the extreme social(ist) measures the western states were starting to implement, the first signs of liberalism going to far to the left, the need for at least a hint of Machiavellism especially when dealing with international crisis.
Interesting insights in France of WWII, de Gaulle, Alger, Indochina and all the intriguing power plays of that time.
And finaly this :
"The democratic state is suffering from an obvious contradiction. One the one hand it undertakes extensive intervention in the economic and social structure; on the other, its authority is relatively small, because every organized group, every trade union, every party has at its disposal ways and means of paralyzing it. The same people who protest against the state want everyhting from it."
"We live in societies controlled by economic interests in which it is very difficult to persuade people to sacrifice much, if not everything, to safeguard liberty. Democracy and prosperity are always identified whith each other. Prosperity is, to be sure, a good thing, but it quite often demands sacrifices too. The people of the Western democracies are not willing to make those sacrifices. That constitues another striking moral contradiction of the democratic system. Democracy is morally superior to despotism not because, say, its economic system is better or because it is more creative and generally productive, but because it comes up with better human beings".

Customer Reviews:
Great Book.......2007-09-19
This is a pretty good book. It focuses on writings though. If you would like to have a book that speaks on communication in general, then I would suggest "How to Use Power Phrases" by Meryl Runion or optimally both books. The examples in "Power Phrases" are verbal examples, but can be used in both situations. "How to say it" should be titled "How to put it in writing"
Great Graduation Gift.......2007-06-22
I believe the ability to write a thoughtful and effective letter is an important skill to have, and one that many younger people today are not developing due to all of our electronic communications. I got this for a graduation gift and it has truly helped me become better at writing good letters for my new "adult" life, from thank you letters to job correspondence and more.
How to say it.......2007-05-12
This is a must have for anyone who writes, talks, or otherwise communicates with other people. I use it all the time for writing letters.
Great Reference Book.......2007-02-02
I draw a blank sometimes on what to say and when to say it. That's why I bought to book - to fill in the blanks !! Love it ! More than I expected.
The best so far.......2006-07-14
A lot has been written already about this book, so I would like to concentrate on one major feature of this manual.
I have several books about letter writing and this is the one I most often use and whoever I showed this book to wanted to buy it. Books of this kind fall into two broad categories: 1. short explanations and a lot of sample letters. 2. long explanations and a reasonable amount of sample letters. This book, however, shows that something more can be done. I usually have the problem with the first category that some authors tend to empty their Document folders from the work computers into a book and write some clever remarks as an introduction to them. Rosalie Maggio's book introduces methodology into the editing process: she gives you useful advice and also warning what not to do, but after that the topics are built up from word level gradually through phrases, sentences, paragraphs until you get to the actual sample letters. This way, you get much more useful material than you could get only with sample letters.
Customer Reviews:
Covers everything you'd want to know about the eye.......2000-07-08
The herbal, homeopathic, and nutritional remedies for various eye disorders are very helpful...as are the explanations of how to use them. This book seems to cover every eye and vision problem there is. An excellent book for anyone interested in their vision and how the eye works

Book Description
During World War II, the federal government forever changed the lives of many northern Arizona citizens with the construction of a U.S. Army ordnance depot ten miles west of Flagstaff. John Westerlund now tells how this linchpin in the war effort marked a turning point in Flagstaff's history, contributing to the city's rapid growth and bringing social, cultural, and economic change to the region.
Customer Reviews:
lots of bombs, but this book isn't one of them.......2006-08-08
When this book showed up in the stores I ignored it for a long time, assuming that it was just the history of one army ammunitions depot--and how interesting could this be? But it turns out that this is a first-rate social history, taking place at the intersection of some major subjects of great interest to many, such as Native American culture and World War Two. The Navajo Depot was built near Flagstaff because it had to be on a major railroad line and able to serve West Coast ports, but be safely far from Japanese bombers. By chance this placed it near the heartland of the most vibrant Native American cultures. Thousands of Native Americans worked on the base, including a noticable percentage of the Hopi tribe. Most Native workers were Navajos, and they even built their own hogan village, and they continued some very traditional ways. Many white workers walked straight out of a cowboy movie. The mixing and mixups of white American and Native American cultures on the base are rich in cultural lessons and colorful characters and stories. (For example, R. C. Gorman--the future artist--grew up on the base). Then add a large group of Austrian POWS, and you have all the makings of a 'ship of fools' sort of journey with all its unlikely passengers interacting in unlikely ways. Some of the book's stories are quite entertaining. Portions of the book take place in nearby Flagstaff, but you don't have to know Flagstaff to enjoy this part too, for Flagstaff is typcial of Old West frontier towns and Rt. 66 towns and railroad towns, and some of the social pressures felt in Flagstaff, such as housng shortages and labor unrest, were typical of much of America in the years of World War Two. But there's much that makes this book unique.

Book Description
For too long, too many historians have been too much concerned with impersonal forces, underlying structures and long-term developments. Now, "people" are back. In a postmodern age it is easier to appreciate the decisive role played by individuals, as they ride their luck and seize their opportunity to bend the world to their will. As these essays by twelve eminent historians demonstrate, biography is too important to be left to the amateurs. Among the rich variety of strong characters analyzed here are an Austrian emperor, a German kaiser, a Victorian prime minister, an Italian dictator, and an American president.

Vibrant, combative and broad-ranging, the new voices in Listen Up are the best proof yet that the next wave of rising feminists is magnificently equal to its task of creating a movement that should be, in terms of its ideas, always renewed. -- Naomi Wolf, author of Fire With Fire
Book Description
In this new, expanded edition of the acclaimed collection, writers and activists such as Rebecca Walker, Nomy Lamm, and Inga Muscio are joined by Lisa Miya-Jervis, publisher of Bitch; Alison Crews, editor of Girl-Mom; and Daisy Hernandez of Ms. Together, they cover a wide range of topics, from blending careers and feminist politics to the intersection of traditional culture and third-wave sensibilities.
Customer Reviews:
Inspiring.......2004-08-27
This book provides a very broad view of the struggles women face in every aspect of life. A new perspective is gained when reading the first hand experiences of those who have really struggled, as a result of merely being themselves. This book provides a lot of insight and is a must read for anyone who sympathizes with feminist struggles, or who just cannot yet grasp why there is a need for feminism.
still worth listening too.......2004-06-20
Not sure how to rate this, as all the old essays are here and just as good as I remember them. However, I felt, for the most part, that the quality of the new pieces did not measure up to the old. It wasn't necessarily the abundance of four-letter words, but what it was (or wasn't) exactly, I couldn't quite put my finger on. I suppose you could say they felt more tossed off. If it's true, as a reviewer said, that the new authors are angrier, that's intriguing. Has nothing been accomplished in a decade, or are women just less shy about demanding change? I wish I knew.
I did like the new essay from the woman who attended Smith as a Francis Perkins Scholar (I also went to school in that area) and was forced to also jump through the demeaning hoops of the state welfare system. Also interesting was "Class Feminist" - I'm not too (sadly) surprised that a teen would be ostracized for assuming that label, but that a teacher would by her colleagues....
And I didn't think there was that much male bashing - but then, I am female.
Voices that ring true..........2003-04-27
Profound, eloquent articulate, wrenching. After the first reading, nearly every page has markings, passages I relate to, echoes of my life or thoughts, or points I find myself surprised or ashamed to have missed, overlooked or ignored. There are notes in the margins of every essay, authors or other figures I don't want to forget, awakenings that came at the end of a paragraph sentence, or even mid-sentence.
In the essay by Curtis Sittenfeld, titled "Your Life as a Girl," I saw myself in literally every paragraph, from the early triumph of running the timed mile and beating not only all the other girls, but all but one or two of the boys, to the first time I gave up trying (be it a math problem or the precise spin of a football throw), admitting myself the weaker, slower or less intelligent. The year I spent perpetually chilled, wearing clinging fabrics to show the body I'd "worked" so hard for, while at home I piled on the layers and spent hours in front of the space heater, and nights dreaming of lavish meals I would never eat. The year upon year upon year spent camouflaging the giddy pleasure at being deemed worthy of brief attention by the object of my (temporarily) undying affection, followed inevitably by the crushing voice that convinced me that my poochy belly was the reason for my unrequited devotion. Most nights are now spent dreaming not of romance (at least not the kind they build novels around) or wealth, but of crossing that finish line to sit with the boys and gloat, watching all the rest straggle in after me.
To wit, an essential read for any woman searching for a voice she relates to, but always coming up short of that perfectly articulated match. These are voices you can trust to speak clearly, loudly, angrily, humorously and with integrity and honesty about the challenges we still face.
Book was in good shape.......2003-02-11
The book was in good shape and it was shiped very quikly. i enjoy it.
thanks for a good seller.
Contemporary feminist perspectives on women's issues.......2002-04-09
Now in an expanded second edition, Listen Up: Voices From The Next Feminist Generation showcases an outstanding series of essays by leading "third-wave" feminists on an impressive range of topics such as blending careers with feminists politics; the inability of a singular feminism to speak for all women, the intersection of traditional culture and third-wave sensibilities; feminist activism; sexuality; identity, gender formation, and more. Ably edited by feminist and women's issues expert Barbara Bindlen (Managing Editor, Family Fun magazine), Listen Up is a core addition to any academic and community library Women's Studies collection, and very strongly recommended reading for women seeking to learn contemporary feminist perspectives on important and principle women's issues of the day.
Book Description
This book brings together analyses by feminists of diverse identities on themes including women's rights and economic change, new technologies, sexuality, feminist organizations and movements. It presents key issues arising out of the experiences of young women living in both North and South, the challenges confronting young feminists, and the agenda for a new era of feminist leadership and activism.
Customer Reviews:
Great Addition to Genre.......2007-03-26
_Defending Our Dreams_ provides a strong addition to the growing genre of books/anthologies authored by the "next generation" of feminists or third wave activists.
The book is well-written and includes important discussion about the importance of activism, case studies, discussion about economics, male feminists, and ends with a strong essay about feminist activism in the future. The last entry, a poem, is also provocative and ties up the volume well.
I'm using sections from the book in three different courses this term and a few of the student who have already read the sections have shared that they enjoyed the chapters.
For my own research purposes, the sections on ICTs and Cyberfeminism were the most useful. The book is written for an academic audience and is probably most useful for undergraduates. That said, I think a lay audience would enjoy the material.
Book Description
Detailing both their public and private lives-as well as their many and varied performances- i Queens of Comedy /i examines the impact these women have had on the predominantly male-oriented world of comedy. Performers like Carol Burnett, Joan Rivers, and their more recent counterparts, comediennes Brett Butler and Roseanne, have helped to shift women's roles in comedy from object to subject. This book maps out this shift, providing an often brutally honest picture of women's lives in both the spotlight of comedy and this modern world. br Through candid personal interviews with Lucille Ball, Carol Burnett, and other visionary performers, i Queens of Comedy /i explores how comediennes have redefined the roles of women in not only the entertainment business, but society as a whole.
Customer Reviews:
Great intro to comediennes.......2000-04-06
I used this as a textbook for a film class I taught last year and the class loved it. The book contains solid biographical information and it's really fun to read. Plus, author Horowitz offers some very perceptive insights into women's comedy. My only criticism is that footnotes would have been really helpful because the students wanted to follow up on some of the sources -- but overall I highly recommend it.
Book Description
The next generation of feminist scientists and scholars discuss the new advances in the growing field of feminist science studies. The essays address the generational divide between the veteran feminist science studies scholars who established the field and the young scientists now in the field and breaking new ground. The essays take the form of autobiographical narratives as well as theoretical essays and include suggestions for teachers and community-based projects.
Contributors include: Donna Haraway, Bonnie Spanier, Valerie Kuletz, Sandra Harding, Karen Barad and Kate Harsbeck.
