Book Description
Window design is a vanishing metier, but it remains an enduring art form providing rare views through the glass into fantastic realms of dreams and fantasy. In these pages, Linda Fargo, the renowned window artist for Bergdorf Goodman, opens up her portfolio of magical tableaux created especially for this crown jewel of the retail world. Her palette is wonderfully rich and eclectic, juxtaposing relics of the past and the present, symbols of art and literature, Western culture and exotic lands, moving easily between the marvelous and the everyday. These windows continue to astonish and delight all who flock to them for the traditional annual Christmas displays, as well as the untold numbers of passersby who stop on the street year-round to gaze at them, getting caught up in their magic. Open these pages and you open yourself to Fargo's enchanting worlds, visions rarely still encountered on strolls down the fashion avenues of the world.

dreams through the glass.......2004-06-11
This book is a gem of a resource guide for visual artists (or anyone responsible for retail displays). Fargo's innovative approach and resourceful applications as well as entertaining descriptions give us a unique view of her creative process. She uses everyday objects in unexpected applications to ensure that her "sidewalk shadowboxes play on the stage of world-class theatre in a world-class city."

this books sucks!.......2005-08-17
Big time waste of money. Pix are bland, boring, old, and most of them are small. Don't waste your hard earned cash on this log to add to the fire! Good for....propping up your loose table leg.
Artistic Poses of Women by Top Photographers.......2001-05-12
Calendar art supported by a company has to draw attention or the money is wasted. Although the Pirelli calendar is no exploitive garage display, it is certainly not art book quality until the last few years. Since 1994, the work has been solid. The 2000 calendar by Annie Leibovitz is well worth your time. The book's essays are a brief overview of cultural events since 1964 when the calendar was begun. I found the essays added very little. Much of the "best" art in this book will have only historical value for evoking past culture for you, as its aesthetic appeal is limited.
Before reading further, please realize that this book contains much female nudity of a sort that would earn it an "R" rating if it were a motion picture.
The images are supposed to respond to a charter to capture "the beauty of the world." As portrayed here, this beauty is of gorgeous women, generally displaying more skin than clothing.
A different artist is chosen for the commission each year. Since 1994, these photographers have been Herb Ritts (1994 and 1999), Richard Avedon (1995 and 1997), Peter Lindbergh (1996), Bruce Weber (1998), and Annie Leibovitz (2000). As you can see, this is about as good a group as you could draw upon for a calendar. Not surprisingly, most of the best images come from this period. I graded the book down for mostly having ordinary images before 1986.
Here are my favorites from the book:
Peter Knapp, January 1966; Harri Peccinotti, 1968 (page 51); Francis Giacobetti, 1971 (page 70); Sarah Moss, 1972 (pp. 71 and 75); Bert Stern, May 1986; Terence Donovan, March and September, 1987; Arthur Elgort, February and July, 1990; Clive Arrowsmith, September 1991; Herb Ritts, Cover and December 1994; Richard Avedon, April and August, 1995; and all twelve of Annie Leibovitz's images from 2000.
Ms. Leibovitz's work focuses on portions of torsos for the most part, done in subtle lighting. It evokes a display of partially broken antique statuary from Greek and Roman times.
I found some of the images in the book to be troubling. Perhaps the most unfortunate were a few that figuratively tied the women to the concept of a tire. Relizing that these images had a commercial purpose, it still seems wrong to turn people into products.
Perhaps the best lesson from this book is to be sure that you get the Pirelli calendar sent to you each year in the future. If the company is going to continue sponsor such fine photographic art, this calendar will be well worth having.
After you finish this book, think about ways that beauty should and should not be portrayed. How could Pirelli have presented this work in other formats to create more benefit for its viewers?
Seek beauty in all of its forms, and use it to elevate your soul!

Get to know Jeffry, Jill, Lora, Scott, Cullen, Kyle, Jeremy, Juston, Chris, Steven and Matt the Anarchist as they spin their wheels in the dead-end midwest town of Northern Plains. Laced with humor and rooted with depth, THE WAITING PLACE tracks the lives of a handful of teens and young adults who do their best to deal with their isolated surroundings, and with one another. This collection of the 1997 series also includes promotional art by Brendon & Brian Fraim, a new cover by Volume 2 artist Mike Norton, and an introduction by Paul (Sentry) Jenkins.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing........2007-05-23
This book is simply amazing on every level.
The characters are well defined.
The dialogue actually sounds like real people speak it (trust me, that is a rarity for a comic book).
The art captures the characters perfectly.
The hopelessness of small town America is captured perfectly.
Highly recommended.
More of my favorite "subgenre".......2001-09-30
It's nice to know that next to things like 'Box Office Poison' and 'Strangers in Paradise' there's more like it available in my favorite subgenre, namely 'The Waiting Place' (this books collects #1-6 of the series).
I compare it mainly to Strangers in Paradise because it really is a lot like it, only it centers around more and more various young people. Where it differs from Strangers in Paradise is in the fact that it doesn't try to built a humorous factor in it. It just 'reports' everyday, typical life.
It's about:
Jeffrey just moved with his parents to a place far away from where they used to live. He came from a big city and now has to live in a minor village full of rednecks, with all their presumptions. Needless to say he's having a hard time at it. In the meanwhile the other youngsters there are also trying to create some movement in their lives, since their habitat in itself offers little.
Most of the time all the characters are dealing with typical problems you face at their age (the phase between youngster/young adult), like insecurity about oneself and about girls, wether you're gonna fit in, and how you're gonna tell your parents your "awful" secret. Some of them start realizing the difference between what things used to mean to them when they were kinds and now. It has a high "Deja-Vu' factor.
This book collects the first 6 issues, like I said, which are not a completed arc. That is not a bad thing because there ARE no arcs really, it's more like watching an ongoing tv-series. Little subplots start and end all the time, but they are intertwined, there are no 'real' endings anywhere.
Another, what I consider, strong point is that Kelly (he writer) tells it like it is, no romanticized elements. This makes it unpredictable all the way, you never know what is going to happen next. Artwise it's pretty nice. It's no Terry Moore but that's mainly due to the difference in style, not in skill. It's very clear and more than sufficient. My conclussion shall not be a surprise: if you like Box Office Poison and/or Strangers in Paradise (for those who haven't read those: comicbooks about 'real life', in all its aspects with as little as possible exaggeration) this will probably be to your liking.

Book Description
Henry Demarest Lloyd was one of the post-bellum 19th-century's best known journalists and non-fiction writers. In fact, only E.L. Godkin exceeded Lloyd in influence and prestige, and Godkin wrote no book-length expose with the impact of Lloyd's 1894 Wealth Against Commonwealth. This biography, based in part on previously unpublished archival information, is a study of the mentality of the journalist as an advocate for reform. It is an examination of Wealth Against Commonwealth, the most influential expose and "starting point for every public investigation" of the late 19th-century industrial monopolies. Lloyd's pre- and post-Wealth journalism is investigated as well, including "Story of a Great Monopoly," Lloyd's 1881 Atlantic Monthly article said to be the first example of American muckraking, and Lloyd's published investigations of reforms such as cooperatives, labor arbitration, minimum wage, and social security. His contact with a variety of his intellectual contemporaries is also featured, including Horace Greeley, Jane Addams, Ida M. Tarbell, Samuel F. Gompers, Clarence S. Darrow, Joseph Medill, Henry George, William Dean Howells, and Eugene V. Debs.

excellent.......2000-04-13
this book was a great source of information for those who are pregnant and also for those who work in the field of obstetrics
This book uncovers the truth about pregnancy.......1999-03-04
Benson does an excellent job of "wiping the slate clean" of old myths that have been passed down for generations, and he also addresses many common questions and concerns regarding routine testing and procedures. Pregnancy myths is written in an informative style that captured my interest on every topic of the birthing process. This book uncovers the truth about pregnancy and gives reassurance with scientific fact that risk and complications are the minority to the vast numbers of pregnancies today.
Easy to read, highly informative book.......1999-02-24
I found "Pregnancy Myths" to be a highly informative, concisely written source on many questions I had as an expectant mother, and many others I had not thought to ask.
It was comprehensive -- yet easy to read and understand........1998-12-31
I just had the opportunity to read "Pregnancy Myths" by Dr. Michael Benson. I found the book to be very comprehensive -- yet easy to read and understand. His book is an excellent resource, which addresses a variety of pregnancy-related questions and myths -- from conception through birth. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to all those considering pregnancy as well as those in the midst of the experience.
Dr. Benson provides a clear explanation for many myths........1998-12-17
As a prenatal educator, I found Br. Benson's book to provide a clear explanation for many of the "old wives' tales" surrounding pregnancy. His explanations are based on scientific fact without being difficult to understand. As an OB staff educator I recommend Dr. Benson's book as a resource for nurses with limited experience in answering a family's questions about pregnancy, labor, delivery and postpartum.
Book Description
In the thickof a jungle war where there often wasn't enough food, enough, water, enough air support, enough explosives, or even enough radio batteries, the vulnerable Force Recon Marines knew that the only things that could keep them alive were their courage, their skills, and their loyalty to one another. Here is the story of a Force Recon Company that put its lethal skills to work to make sure its team could survive combat behind benemy lines--where one slip could mean body bags for everyone.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent follow-up!.......2006-04-11
I highly recommend any of Major Norton's books. This book is very well written, and provides an honest opinion of his experiences during his second tour in Vietnam. It also gives a good, personal look at the inner workings of Marine Recon teams in Vietnam.
Major Norton's easy and honest writing style make his books very hard to put down once you start reading them. He also does a great job of bringing the sights, smells, sounds and tastes of combat in Vietnam to life for the reader.
Most of all, Major Norton does an outstanding job of making one proud of all our fighting men & women who served in Vietnam; they did a great job and books like this one are long overdue.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book to all who might be interested in the personal experiences of Vietnam combat, as well as for anyone interested in the extremely tough job of gaining intel on enemy forces in Vietnam.
first book better.......2004-09-08
Force Recon, 1970 Bruce Norton
This is the 2nd book by Bruce Norton on his tour of Vietnam in 1969-1970.
His first book takes us from his childhood, to joining the Navy and becoming a Corpsman, to being attached the Marine 3rd Force Company, Recon. Alex Lee, a Major at the time wrote his own book, Force Recon.
Norton's first book stops after 22 patrols, and he is sent to the Philippines for Scuba training.
This is where the second book picks up in his tour of duty. He devotes a chapter to the details of Scuba school, and going on liberty in the nearby town, a dangerous business. Another chapter is devoted to his getting his jump wings in the Philippines, and some time spent jumping in Okinawa, while on the way back to Vietnam.
When he got back, Maj Lee was gone, as were most of the officers and men. Only a platoon of men were left.
They became a cadre to train ROK Marines in recon work.
Norton relates the story of having to go out, establish an outpost, and guard it. They find out that the outpost is only being set up so that a General can come out and inspect it. The Marines have old, worn out uniforms. Before the general's visit, choppers are sent out with new uniforms and boots for the men.
After the inspection, which took the general 10 minutes, the new uniforms and boots are taken back, and the Marines are back in their old uniforms. Days of work spent building an outpost for this! Then it is abandoned.
Norton got assigned to the 1st force recon company. He found out quickly that 3rd Company ran a lot more patrols than 1st recon company. Most of the members who had extensive patrolling experience were men transferred from 3rd company.
A chapter is devoted to jumping from the OV10 Bronco. A chapter is devoted to unusual events at EM clubs, such as the accidental shooting of an American female singer.
He goes back into patrolling, and discusses again in detail all the training and cross training involved.
A chapter is devoted to a mission of mistakes, where an idiot Lt named Blotz nearly gets everyone killed.
Blotz tries to get Norton court martialed, but when details of what happened on the patrol are found out, it is Blotz who is in trouble. Later in the book, Lt Blotz gets tossed out of a moving truck by infuriated enlisted men, but no one saw anything.
A chapter is devoted to 1st Sgt Maurice Jacques, and his exploits, mostly before Norton knew him. Missions with Special Forces in 1965 are discussed in detail.
Another chapter is devoted to Norton's visit to the Naval Support Activity hospital ship. Good food, air conditioning, clean clothes, etc.
Then next chapter involves patrolling the Thuong Duc Valley area, West of Da Nang. There was an SF camp in the Thuong Duc Valley and the North Vietnamese were rocketing it. The Marines set up an outpost and began patrolling trying to find the site where the rockets were being launched and knock it out.
Another chapter is spent on the death of a Marine by being eaten by a tiger.
A Lt Corbett took over the platoon, and a chapter is devoted to him, as he had a lot of experience, and was an excellent officer. Patrolling details are related.
The final chapter relates to Norton getting wounded while on patrol and medevaced. He describes what his unit did while he was in the hospital. 2 Australian Ranges were being trained and loudly wanted the Marines to do patrolling the Australian way. They were choppered out as they were loud and dangerous.
Norton was assigned duty at the Naval Hospital in Boston after he recovered from his injuries.
He was amazed to see Naval Officers spending their lunch time in uniform demonstrating against the war.
Norton met a Marine officer who also had jump wings, who got him in touch with Maj Lee, who was stationed in the Pentagon. Lee suggested that Norton finish college and join the Marines to become and officer, which he did.
Col. Norton nailed it........2001-09-29
I believe Col. Norton pretty well encapsulated the climate over there...I wasn't in Recon, but he did a great job of explaining how counter-recon tactics of the NVA evolved, beginning in Force Recon Diary 1969 and on through Force Recon Diary 1970. Both books were great...real keepers.
Right story, wrong period of time........2001-02-03
As a Special Forces cadre,I observed the Marine Recon teams working the Laotian border around our base at Lang Vei. Their 4 man teams provided much needed information for everyone. We knew of massive enemy build ups in the area prior to Tet, thanks to these brave men. There is no mention of those days in any of these books. Sadly, the story of Marine Recon's greatest feats will probably never be told.
Sequel to Force Recon Diary, 1969, Another Great Book!.......2000-06-27
Force Recon Diary, 1970, picks up where FRD, '69 left off, with "Doc" Norton returning to Vietnam and his second tour with 1st Force. The detail of his work is exceptional, and brings the reader right into the "harbor site" with the team. Major Norton has the ability and talent to capture the moment and spares no expense in "telling it like it was." For anyone interested in the tough business of Marine Reconnaissance during the Vietnam War, the Force Recon Diaries, written by Doc, are as good as it gets. Get this book, sit down with a stiff drink, and read what it was like to be a member of a Marine Force Recon Team in combat. Trully, a great source of information. I give it 5 Stars!
