5 out of 5 stars Design Principles For Senior Living.......2002-11-16

The author gives advice on designing and furnishing a smart aging home, providing room-by-room analyses, checklists, and recommendations for resources. She addresses specific physical conditions and considers 'the healing bedroom' as a means to setting up a home hospital. And she covers 'the caring community', outlining the local support systems available for the onset of health and disability issues. (I found the reference to 'motion seating' and the company that makes it to be worth the price of the book alone.) Having seen my father through his last years, I already had an appreciation of the need for things as basic as proper seating and an accessible bathroom. The author's experience with her mother's Alzheimer's disease gave me even more to think about. This book appears to be going out of print which is unfortunate because it is quite practical. Buy it while you can.

5 out of 5 stars A fine book.......2002-07-06

Briefly, a fine book to sensitize one to issues of design as they apply to older persons. Although much of this book pertains to new constructions, I used it to sensitize me to issues that were also relevant to retrofit--such as putting up railings, etc., in an existing house.

A beautiful, stylish celebration of the cult of the blonde

If you've only one life, live it as a blonde" are the immortal words of a Clairol ad, and they set the stage for Kathy Phillips's treatment of the world of the blonde, natural or dyed, past or present, male or female. Complete with a "Blonde Bible" and "All you need to know about being blonde"--a practical guide to blonding techniques--here are blondes of all shapes and sizes, from film stars, and rock babes, to sports heroes and catwalk queens. The Vogue Book of Blondes heralds the sex kittens of the 1930s such as Jean Harlow and Veronica Lake, peroxide pop stars including Blondie and Billy Idol, male sex symbols such as Robert Redford and Leonardo DiCaprio, and blonde icons, from Grace Kelly and Marilyn Monroe to Princess Diana and Madonna. This beautifully illustrated compendium features the work of world class photographers such as David Bailey, Mario Testino, and Herb Ritts. If it's true that blondes have more fun, then The Vogue Book of Blondes is a perfect gift for the blonde or aspiring blonde in your life.

2 out of 5 stars Not about real blondes.......2001-07-16

This book is not about blondes; it is about brunettes who bleach their hair. Real blondes - those who got their hair colour from their genes and not out of a bottle - will be disappointed, as there's nothing in this book that relates to them. There is a lot of interesting information about the bottle blondes like Jean Harlow, Marilyn Monroe and Madonna but real blondes are quite something different.

5 out of 5 stars the blonde mystique.......2001-06-14

great book, wonderful layout and pictures, great writing. very whimsical and a great example of modern writing and interest. recommended to anyone interested in popular culture!

5 out of 5 stars Sooo enjoyable to read... even for brunettes.......2000-10-20

Very complete and informative, this book deals with the history and psychology of the so called dumb blondes. The text is brilliant and the pictures outstanding. Let's enjoy the icones such as Madonna or Marilyn Monroe (Brigitte Bardot, Catherine Deneuve etc) and the advices of the international who's who of colourists.

Or planes. I read this one on a plane, and several of the strips led up to one that had me laughing... very loudly... for several minutes straight. Its been a long time since I've seen comics this creative and hilarious. Can't wait for the second book.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best comic writers!.......2003-08-24

Narbonic was my first webcomic and is still my favorite. Even those who shy away from comics will love Narbonic. It's hilarious and the storylines are always gripping and suspenseful.

5 out of 5 stars Narbonic by Shaenon Garrity.......2003-03-04

Narbonic is the self-titled book edition of the most creative and consistently funny comic strip to come along since THE FARSIDE and CALVIN & HOBBES. It has a unique, offbeat sense of humor that will grow on you like the culture in a petri dish. Narbonic shows the inner day-to-day workings of a mad science lab. Where an insane geneticist has to simultaneously hire a new employee, battle a hero, and get the doomsday machine working, all without getting evicted by the landlord.

One of Narbonic's strongest points is its incredible cast of interesting characters. Helen B. Narbon is the young mad scientist trying to run a profitable mad science laboratory, and make a name for herself, to prove she's not just a chip off her even more evil mother, Dr. Narbon. Dave Davenport is Helen's computer technician, who hates working for the forces of evil, but finds it preferable to working for Microsoft. Mell Kelly is Helen's evil intern, who's fascination with guns and explosives, keeps the other employees on their toes. RT-5478, (Artie) is a super intelligent gerbil Helen created, who considers himself the sane, rational one of the group, but is not above amusing himself by conducting unauthorized experiments on other lab animals or members of the staff. And no mad science comic would be complete without an arch rival, Professor Lupin Madblood, who Helen has a not so secret crush on.

Narbonic is mostly presented as long complex story arcs, and often reads more like a novel than a comic strip. Shaenon Garrity sketches her story lines well in advance, allowing for much richer development than you'll find most other comics.

Narbonic isn't for everyone. It requires some thought by the reader to understand the science, both real and imagined, that the artist often adds to the strip. The humor is mostly personality driven, so a good familiarity with each character is needed to get the more subtle jokes. But if you're looking for a comic strip that panders to the above mean IQ, and if you've ever wondered what REALLY happens in a mad science lab, Narbonic is for you.

5 out of 5 stars In the top 10 funniest books that I have ever read!.......2003-02-25

Imagine that Nikola Tesla and Jerry Seinfield wrote a comic together. It would be very similar to Narbonic. Garrity's humor is on equal to that Douglas Adams or Terry Pratchett. On top of that, the art is quite cute.

Helen Narbon is a young mad scientist who creates things such as 300 lb. gerbils and cellular destabilizers. Along with her slacker geek henchman and homicidal intern, Helen tries to take her lab to new levels of infamy. As you can guess, things do not go smoothly.

In most works, mad scientists are two dimensional villains who are nothing more than opponents for muscle bound main characters. Narbonic documents the day to day experiences of a mad scientist's lab and portrays the characters as real people with their own insane desires and lifestyles. It is not an easy path they follow; doomsday devices don't make themselves.

This is the funniest comic that I have ever read!

              5 out of 5 stars Evil!.......2003-02-22

Beware! Narbonic will suck you in, make you laugh, make you cry...and meanwhile, perform subtle but lasting scientific experiments on your mind. By the time Shaenon Garrity is through with you, you'll be a devoted slave.

This is the first major print collection for Narbonic, a daily webcomic that's been around since mid 2000. This book represents roughly its first year. Meet the main characters: Helen Narbon, a mad scientist plotting to take over the world; Mell Kelly, her Evil Intern; Dave Davenport, the Henchman; and Artie, the superintelligent Gerbil.

The strips are funny. The stories are smart. The characters are full-fleshed, with a definite arc. This is one of the very few comic strips I read, and the only one I make sure I never miss. (I'm telling you--scientific experiments = devoted slave.)

              Book Description

Now, more than ever, political journalists are central figures in the titanic struggles of modern history, not only telling us about events but also interpreting them and shaping our views. This engrossing book explores the relationship between journalism and politics in the twentieth century and tells the stories of the journalists-both good and bad-who have played major roles. Fred Inglis tracks the flamboyant biographies of giants of the genre, from the early newspapermen during the Russian revolution to those who reported on the Spanish Civil War, the hideous discoveries at Dachau, and the fall of the Berlin Wall. He scrutinizes news proprietors such as Joseph Pulitzer, Katharine Graham, and Rupert Murdoch; writer-journalists like George Orwell, Evelyn Waugh, Andre Malraux, and Martha Gellhorn; and journalists of conscience-William Shirer in Nazi Germany, James Cameron in Asia, Neil Sheehan in Vietnam, Norman Mailer at the Pentagon, Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein after Watergate, and others. Inglis examines the great pioneers of broadcast news journalism, notably Ed Murrow, Walter Cronkite, and Alistair Cooke, as well as such contemporary journalists as Christopher Hitchens and the BBC's John Simpson. He explores the relations between political journalists and their all-powerful proprietors and exposes fascinating instances of pomposity, misjudgment, and downright untruthfulness, as well as moments of courage and responsibility. In turns wise, insightful, funny, and biting, this sweeping narrative measures each journalist against the best principles of the vocation and silhouettes some of their most dramatic life stories against the moral horizons of the epoch.

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Reporting politics in the Twentieth Century.......2002-06-18

This book examines the role of journalism in shaping our picture of life in the twentieth century, particularly in terms of political events, and by extension, armed conflicts. Inglis chooses a number of exemplary life-stories, sketching them with his customary flair and economy, before using them to highlight the values that each biography teaches us. The journalists are (for the most part) the heroes and heroines, whilst the newspaper and media owners are a more ambiguous lot, and this depiction is surely as it should be. Journalists like Bill Shirer told the truth of what they saw often despite, rather than thanks to, their employers.

A few minor grumbles : Izzy Stone's account of the Wake Island meeting between MacArthur and Truman (15th October 1950) is, as Inglis rightly points out, inferential, but he still repeats it verbatim. The significance of the timing (3 weeks before the mid-term Congressionals) is ignored : part of Truman's reason for making the journey to Wake Island would surely have been to associate himself publicly with his leading field commander at a time when the Korea conflict was going very well for the United Nations forces. MacArthur was a complex character, arrogant, yes, but as America's greatest 20th century general, not without some justification, but certainly not the madman described here. I'm not sure that Ceausecu's execution necessarily fitted his crimes : if we executed every politician who allowed himself to be overthrown, the list of candidates would be a long one. Lastly, I'm not sure why the wartime BBC newsreader Bruce Belfrage (pages 171 & 174) is referred to as Cedric : he always gave his name on radio as Bruce.

However, these are minor quibbles. This book is a splendid portrayal of a world in which the written and spoken word have been replaced gradually by TV and the immediacy of live coverage. However, that gain has been at the expense of the descriptive power of language itself.

                Book Description

In Children Who See Too Much, Betsy Groves debunks the myth that young age is a protector against the lasting effects of witnessing violence in the home. She makes the powerful case that traumatic events carried out by family members carry the most severe psychological risks for very young children and uses the newest cognitive research to explore how very young children process violence.

Groves draws upon the Child Witness to Violence Program's award-winning training programs for parents, teachers, police officers, clergy, and pediatric health care providers to lay out ways adults can understand and protect the very young children—all around us—who see too much.

"Groves provides six practical steps that will help parents create a safer world, regardless of neighborhood or race. The model presented in this book is clearly a valuable one for other communities to copy."
                —Library Journal

"Betsy Groves offers rare insight for adults who seek to help children cope with trauma and violence."
—James Garbarino, Ph.D., author of Parents Under Siege

"As the events of Sept. 11 drive home, there is no way, these days, to keep images of death and destruction entirely away from the eyes (and out of the nightmares) of our children. . . . Children Who See Too Much will fill the need for a road map felt by parents overwhelmed by all the awfulness around them."
                —Judith Warner, The Washington Post

Whether you know a little or a lot about the impact of exposure to violence on children, this book is a compelling and powerful read. "Children Who See Too Much" is an excellent resource for anyone who wants to recognize and understand how we can help children impacted by violence, whether we are their teachers, social workers, mental health professionals, child welfare workers, other professionals, friends, or family members. Ms. Groves has woven together a compelling tapestry of children's stories, research findings, professional experience working directly with children, and thoughful policy and practice recommendations. The information on how to talk to your children about terrorism and war makes this book particularly relevant in the complex world that children and their parents must now negotiate. Ms. Grove's extensive experience as a pioneer in the field of helping children exposed to violence has provided an invaluable resource and a must-read for those who care about the well-being of children and their families.

3 out of 5 stars The sinking of the Russian submarine Kursk........2003-02-09

This is a good overview of the sinking the Russian submarine Kursk and the general state of the Russian Navy. With the breakup of the Soviet Union, the defense establishment has received far less attention and resources than before. This contributed to the sinking of the sub.
I was particularly interested in what motivated the claims of the Russian Navy that another submarine collided with the Kursk resulting in her loss. The facts are otherwise, but the political motivation to blame an external power was there. Incompetence by either personnel on the Peter the Great in shooting off a missle or in the torpedo technicians on the Kursk (not Navy personnel) led to this disaster. Old habits die hard in Russia, so someone else to blame was necessary. Burleson does a good job of writing about this in the book.

                1 out of 5 stars simply weak.......2002-08-15

Aside from being almost 100% ... from the russian book by N.Cherkashin, this made-for-american-house-wives booklet reads almost like a Disney version of "Das Boot".

The chronology is good BUT it is available on about 100 websites now, anyway.

The writing style is that of a village daily reporter. The usual american stereotypes about Russia are omnipresent and do not fit well at all with the hero-submariner image.

Finaly: if Burleson wanted to write a good book, he should have gone to Russia to do research! Instead he browses the internet and reads a Russian author. Voila, "Kursk Down" is born.

4 out of 5 stars Great coverage of a tragic story.......2002-06-29

Mr Burleson covers everything relating to this tragic event. The book gives you a details glimpse of what really happened on the sub and how it must've felt to be there. He also goes behind the scenes to cover information on officials and family members and what they were going through. I have researched this tragedy since it happened, collecting news articles and press releases, and I conclude that this book is right on the money....plus, it's hard to put down!

                3 out of 5 stars Good Chronology.......2002-05-19

I thought Mr. Burleson did a good job of compiling information from various sources and putting them in a coherent chronological order. I didn't notice very much new or revealing information, but found that he had researched this tragedy very thoroughly. I'd recommend reading KURSK DOWN for a better insight into our most recent naval tragedy. Considering the reasonable price, it's definitely worth buying. Pick it up now.

5 out of 5 stars Two Explosions In The Barents Sea And ..........2002-04-20

When a state of the art Russian submarine designed to hunt aircraft carriers explodes and sinks during a naval exercise, many questions are raised. The author, Clyde Burleson, does a very good job of addressing those questions and shedding light on this gigantic misshap that cost the lives of the entire crew of 118. He tells us of the design and specifications of the Kursk, the morale and background of her officers and crew, the ordnance she was carrying, and the ordnance fired during her last naval exercise. He also follows up by giving us an informing picture of the rescue/salvage operation and the political actions surrounding it. If you are interested in finding out about the Kursk disaster, this book will not disappoint you.

                  Book Description

Using his thirty years' experience in regional and city planning and cultural heritage within the territories of the former Yugoslavia, Prof. Branislav Krstic-Brano clearly explains the history and the complex causes and consequences of the ethnic and territorial conflict that erupted in bloody confrontation throughout Kosovo in the late nineties. Taking a multidisciplinary approach, the author examines demographic changes; ethnic development of settlements; land ownership; Serbian and Albanian historical monuments, whose listing and preservation are regulated by international conventions; changes in state constitutions; the role of international law in resolving national disputes; and the great powers' strategy for dealing with the Kosovo crisis.

The crux of the problem, as Krstic-Brano shows, is that two peoples claim legitimate rights to the same territory: the Serbs claim a historical right and the Albanians counter that they have an ethnic one. Without favoring either side, the author presents the facts regarding the unique Serbian cultural heritage in the province and the rapid growth of the local Albanian population in the last four decades. Krstic-Brano illustrates how the great powers waged war but failed to ensure peace. He constructs a viable solution to the cultural, ethnic, and political strife - one that he hopes will satisfy both sides of the conflict. The author concludes on a cautiously optimistic note, arguing that the international community has a new opportunity to reconcile the Serbs and Albanians on the basis of population size, land ownership, and origin of cultural monuments.

This important work by a recognized expert in regional culture, urban planning, and politics should be read by everyone interested in a peaceful future for this long-troubled region.

                    Book Description

Volume 22 of Research in Economic History contains six papers. Three are on agriculture and two on macro issues related to the Great Depression. A concluding paper examines trends in interstate migration in the United States.

Fred Pryor begins the volume with a provocative exploration of the degree to which the Neolithic revolution was in fact revolutionary. Pryor argues for a considerably lesser break with the past than has been commonly asserted. He maintains, in particular, that hunter-gatherer methods of procuring subsistence persisted alongside a continuum of agricultural practices. His evidence is drawn largely from records of surviving hunter-gatherer societies.

Moving forward 10 millennia, Gregory Clark provides details of his construction of an annual price series for English net agricultural output from 1209 to 1914. Clark incorporates fresh archival material with existing published series, using consistent methods to build and aggregate 26 component series.

In the third paper on farming, Giovanni Federico estimates world agricultural production from 1800 to 1938. He concludes that output grew more rapidly than population, and did so on all continents, although more rapidly in countries of Western settlement and in Eastern Europe than in Asia or in Western Europe. Federico also finds that output grew faster before World War One than in the inter-war years, and resulted over time in an increase in the share of livestock products.

Continuing into the twentieth century, we have two papers on the Great Depression. First, Barry Eichengreen and Kris Mitchener explore the degree to which the seeds of economic downturn were sown during the 1920s, particularly through "excessive" credit creation. The authors develop quantitative measures of credit expansion and ask how well these indicators account for "uneveness" in the twenties expansion as well as the depth and severity of the depression in individual countries. They complement this macro analysis with sectoral studies of real estate, consumer durables, and high-tech sectors.

Jakob Madsen's contribution is also based on an examination of depression macro history in a number of countries, but his focus is on output and labor rather than credit markets. he explores the perennial questions of how sticky were wages and prices and whether such stickiness played a significant casual role in the rise of unemployment. Contrary to many models that assume or assert that prices are inherently more flexible than nominal wages, Madsen finds the reverse: prices adjusted slowly to changes in nominal wages, and this stickiness played a role in propagating economic depression.

Finally, Josh Rosenbloom and Bill Sundstrom explore changing rates of interstate migration by examining individual-level data from population censuses available in the Integrated Public Use Microdata Series (IPUMS). Their central finding is that propensities to migrate within the United States have traced out a U-shaped pattern, tending to fall between 1850 and 1900 and then, during the twentieth century, rising until around 1970.
