5 out of 5 stars Chihuly Is Wonderful!.......2004-03-21

This book is required for anyone who loves art. Beautifully photographed and bound, this work will bring pleasure to all who see it for many years to come. Chihuly is a genius!

The only thing approaching a dark cloud over Chihuly and this book is the unfortunate presence of William Warmus, who fancies himself a writer. This is my first encounter with Warmus and it was a thoroughly unpleasant one. The 16 pages of useless, if not nonsensical, notebook entries from Warmus are in the beginning. They add nothing and the reader is advised not to waste time with them. Dana Self follows Warmus with a relatively short, but equally worthless, piece in which the nature of beauty is explored. (Has there EVER been any human on this planet who has not had a pretty good idea what is beautiful?) Anyway, though Self describes Chihuly's art as "wildly excessive," Self underlines what we already know - that "in experiencing beauty and pleasure, what we feel motivates our response." Was anything ever more obvious? Do yourself a favor and skip the Warmus and Self sections and go directly to the wonderful photographs, which show both the close-up detail and the distant view of each of the glass sculptures. For those new to Chihuly, there is a complete chronology of his life and work in the back of the book.

5 out of 5 stars I'd never considered glass as art before.........2000-03-28

After seeing the PBS show and owning the video, the book was a must. It is printed on gorgeous paper and provides not only full color photos, but detailed text. The author takes the reader through each installation with sufficient detail, story and technical information. As a coffee-table art book, it sits on the top of my pile now, and has successfully recruited new art glass fans at my house!

William Gottlieb stumbled onto photography by default. As a young reporter covering jazz during the 1930s and 1940s, he discovered that the Washington Post couldn't be bothered to dispatch a staff photographer. Gottlieb took to lugging along his Speed Graphic and a generous supply of flashbulbs, and as he interviewed his subjects he took pictures of them as well--brilliant pictures, in fact. Many have become canonical images: who can think of Billie Holiday, for example, without visualizing Gottlieb's famous head shot? Likewise, his whimsical photos of Dizzy Gillespie have become bebop icons. Yet his group portraits are even richer, suggesting miniature narratives and then leaving it to the viewer to provide the ending. (Which of Ellington's sidemen, I want to know, won that poker game so assiduously witnessed by Django Reinhardt?) The Golden Age of Jazz collects more than 200 of these gems, along with an informative text by the photographer, and it's hard to imagine a better source of visual delights for a jazz fan.

"In this nostalgic book, writer and photographer William P. Gottlieb presents a fond look at the 'Golden Age of Jazz,' from the late 1930s through the 1940s. Here are two hundred of Gottlieb's memorable photographs, masterful images with a distinctive storytelling touch that captures a very human side of these larger-than-life musical personalities. All the greats--Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and many more--are pictured onstage and off. ¶ 176 pages, 200 duotone photographs, size: 8 1/2 x 11". Book Description

In 1961, just as NASA launched its first man into space, a group of women underwent secret testing in the hopes of becoming America’s first female astronauts. They passed the same battery of tests at the legendary Lovelace Foundation as did the Mercury 7 astronauts, but they were summarily dismissed by the boys’ club at NASA and on Capitol Hill. The USSR sent its first woman into space in 1963; the United States did not follow suit for another twenty years.

For the first time, Martha Ackmann tells the story of the dramatic events surrounding these thirteen remarkable women, all crackerjack pilots and patriots who sometimes sacrificed jobs and marriages for a chance to participate in America’s space race against the Soviet Union. In addition to talking extensively to these women, Ackmann interviewed Chuck Yeager, John Glenn, Scott Carpenter, and others at NASA and in the White House with firsthand knowledge of the program, and includes here never-before-seen photographs of the Mercury 13 passing their Lovelace tests.

Despite the crushing disappointment of watching their dreams being derailed, the Mercury 13 went on to extraordinary achievement in their lives: Jerrie Cobb, who began flying when she was so small she had to sit on pillows to see out of the cockpit, dedicated her life to flying solo missions to the Amazon rain forest; Wally Funk, who talked her way into the Lovelace trials, went on to become one of the first female FAA investigators; Janey Hart, mother of eight and, at age forty, the oldest astronaut candidate, had the political savvy to steer the women through congressional hearings and later helped found the National Organization for Women.

A provocative tribute to these extraordinary women, The Mercury 13 is an unforgettable story of determination, resilience, and inextinguishable hope.

4 out of 5 stars Nominate Jerrie Cobb for the Presidential Medal of Freedom.......2006-01-05

"We seek only a place in our Nation's space future without discrimination. We ask as citizens of this Nation to be allowed to participate with seriousness and sincerity in the making of history now... We offer you thirteen women pilot volunteers." Jerrie Cobb, pilot and space enthusiast, in her testimony to Congress

"I believe that we should give serious consideration to the inclusion of women among our future astronauts." Congressman Ken Hechler

"Let them vote. Let them wear pants. Let them shoot pool. But please, Mr. Vice President, don't let them get into space." Dallas Times Herald science writer

"Another question that I am frequently asked is this...'Do you ever plan to use women astronauts in your program?' Well, all I can say is that the male astronauts are all for it... we're reserving 110 pounds of payload for recreational equipment." Wernher von Braun

"Lets Stop This Now!" Vice President Lyndon Johnson, on NASA testing women astronaut candidates.

This is a well-documented, and depressing, book on the exclusion of women as potential US astronauts in the early decades of the US space program. Martha Ackmann has revealed the underbelly of a male-dominated NASA program, and its impacts on the hopes and dreams of qualified women who craved to be allowed to serve their country and blast into space.

My heart bleeds for Jerrie Cobb and the loss of her dream. I nominate Ms. Cobb for the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her dedication.

After reading Ackmann's book, I think you will agree. My only complaint is that the passion of the times is lost in Ackman's dry, academic writing style (too often, it was distracting). I thank her, however, for pulling the history of the Mercury 13 together.

                    2 out of 5 stars Mercury 13 .......2005-07-18

The book does a poor job depicting a key part in women's history. The history itself is not boring or confusing at all. In fact the story of the Mercury 13 women is very interesting and should be taught to everyone. Reading this book is a tiresome and irksome task for even an veteran reader. Martha Ackmann mutilated a historical event. She turned an epic struggle into a unrecognizable, confusing, monster of a book that the average person cannot clearly and decisively comprehend.

                    5 out of 5 stars We've come a long way, baby....thank heavens!.......2003-09-12

"The Mercury 13" is an amazing story of how [discrimination] in the early years of the American space program shut women out. We should be ashamed that the Soviet Union had a woman in space decades before Sally Ride finally broke the gender barrier in the U.S. Martha Ackmann is to be congratulated for bringing the stories of these incredible and patriotic women to light.

5 out of 5 stars Women on to the moon.......2003-09-03

                    Research, research, research...

Ms. Ackmann has really done her homework on all the players involved in the Mercury 13 or FLAT (First Lady Astronaut Trainee) program. She did extensive personal interviewing with the surviving women of the program, and it shows.

Her writing gets you "into" the story and you won't want to put it down.
A classic example of truth being stranger than fiction. Now that we have the luxury of time to look back on these events, besides blaming the social conditions of the times, possibly this book can now serve as a benchmark of lessons learned and hopefully not to be repeated.

Highly recommend for every parent of girls and boys. Read it to your kids, and help them understand what happened.

As an archive Librarian I have a great appreciation for the work that went into this book. It is a GREAT READ! And you won't be disappointed.

Remember....all others came after this one.

                    Enjoy!

Read Stephanie Nolen's "Promised the Moon: The Untold Story of the First Women in the Space Race" instead.
Nolen does an amazing job of contexualizing why these women were selected and why they ultimately remained grounded. If you must choose between Mercury 13 and Promisted the Moon I would go with the second book. Better researched and very well written. Highly recommend.

                          Book Description

Spanning from the American Revolution to the war in Afghanistan, this long-overdue, comprehensive history covers the full scope of African Americans' involvement in the armed forces during war and peacetime. Accompanying the informative text are 300 photographs and illustrations, most of them rare, some never before published.

                          Highlights include accounts of:

                          - The Rhode Island 1st Regiment, the first all-black regiment in the U.S. Army.

                          - The New Orleans Battalion of Free Men of Color.

                          - The Battle for Richmond, which resulted in the largest loss of black life in the Civil War.

                          - The 1863 New York City Draft Riot.

                          - The 1919 lynchings of black war vets.

                          - The Navy's reluctant integration during World War II.

                          - The dramatic story of the Tuskegee Airmen.

                          - The war against terrorism in Afghanistan, and much more.

The book also features portraits of famous and lesser-known soldiers, including Crispus Attucks, Salem Poor, John Brown, Sergeant William Carney, Dorie Miller and Colin Powell. This dramatic visual history is a moving tribute to the essential and often unsung contributions of African-American soldiers through every generation. Book Description

Drawing on a wide range of materials, from government policy and propaganda to subversive trench journalism and performance, from fiction, drama and film to the record of activists in various movements and in various countries, Borderlines weaves together the study of gender with that of the evolution of nationalism and colonialism. Its broad, comparative perspective will rechart the war experiences and identities of women and men during this period of transformation from peace to war, and again to peace.
