Although this coffee table book has photos, it is the short stories about the abandoned gas stations that make the book worthwhile.

Nice Book.......2007-02-14

Beautiful photographs of family weddings. Nice of the Kennedy family to share the photo's of their private moments.Obviously there are 3 photographers who do their weddings and they had permission to run these photos. One of the photographers was Jay Mulvaney and another man called Mr. Reggie took JFK JR and Carolyn's pictures in addition to Arnold and Maria's pictures and the reason I would imagine he is so discreet as his sister is the second wife of Ted Kennedy, Victoria Reggie.)These photographers would make a small fortune if they ever released pictures not previously seen. It would be nice to see more than one of John and Carolyn's wedding, but I guess that is up to the Kennedy's and the Bessette's and they would have to be in agreement. Knowing how much Caroline Kennedy hates the press I doubt it will ever happen.

I love this book on the Kennedys! Definitely it is my favorite Kennedy biography and one of my favorite books ever! Includes many beautiful pictures and great details.

Beautifully written, beautifully laid-out.......2001-07-09

Although rather voyeuristic in its concept, this book is a lovely scrapbook of the nuptials of America's most famous political family.

The photographs are poignant and artful, and the text, while syncophantic, is illuminating with all sorts of wedding minutiae.

The only error I've found in the book is the omission of Robin Lawford in the family tree at the front of the book; all other Kennedy cousins are present in the tree, but Robin must have flown the coop.

You'll enjoy this book, if such books are your sort of thing.

A joyous book, loving, gorgeous and full of charm.......2001-07-02

I loved this wonderful collection of stories and photographs about the weddings in the Kennedy family history. In a way, they are America's family (warts and all!) and to see a hundred years worth of fashion, fashions and celebrating was a joy from cover to cover.

I read Mr. Mulvaney's other book, JACKIE HER CLOTHES OF CAMELOT and bought this one as well...it's a complete delight and will make a lovely gift to my friends as they get married.

Well done Jay Mulvaney!

A good book...however.......2001-05-02

As a long time admirer of the Kennedy's I really liked this book. The up til now unpublished photographs are wonderful... however I was left wondering why the "first" wives of all the Kennedy men were given no more than a nod.. most notable was Joan Bennett's wedding to Ted. A few pictures and little text were all that were afforded them. Perhaps there was not very much cooperation on the part of the ex Mrs. Kennedy's but for what ever reason is it jarring. Also Robin Lawford is shown and mentioned at her sister's weddings.. however in the family chart at the front of the book she is left out. Perhaps I am being picky about a book that shows us the good times in this family. The radiant brides and the handsome grooms on the happiest days of their lives are touching and memorable.

A great read!.......2007-08-15

I loved this book! I was desperately searching for help with my 2 1/2 year old....testing limits, pushing boundaries and power stuggles. I felt as if I were being "broken open."
If you want to parent from your heart with grace and compassion you must read this book. Dr. Baum is incredibly insightful, wise, and down to earth. Her suggestions have not only helped me turn the "terrible twos" into the "terrific twos" but have inspired me to approach parenting in a whole new light. Thank you Dr. Baum for this amazing gift.

With a three year old under my wings, it is truly a time of my life that needs the guidance Joanne has provided in this book. She holds nothing back and gives some of the most powerful direction in raising a child and more. She gives true, from the heart advice on how to be a good human being with the child as the priority. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who has a child, knows someone who has a child or will be having a child. Joanne Baum is brilliant!

Great for all parents!.......2007-05-05

This is a great book for first time parents or if you just need a little refresher. I was particularly interested in reading about the 'Terrific Twos' since our daughter has just turned two. The author does a great job giving practical and useful advice for some of those more challenging parenting moments. Now we have our second baby on the way in just a few weeks. It will be good to go to the beginning of the book and get a little refresher course. Great read! Thanks!

Finally a book that makes sense!.......2002-02-01

When I found out that I was pregnant, I immediately purchased all the "right" parenting books - and found most of them lacking. Each had valid points, but few actually gave me solid advice on the whole "good parenting" thing. Then I read this book, and I actually finished it in one sitting! I have been using the advice regularly, and have found it to be exceptional. I've already seen results - my daughter, who just turned one, is already saying "Thank you" when given treats (without prompting!), and I've received numerous compliments on how well behaved she is. If you want great advice on raising great kids, this is the book for you!

Within three and a half years of its inception, the Bosnian Army had succeeded in fighting the Serbian army to a standstill--Serbia was forced to recognize Bosnia's independence. Yet the victory was ambiguous, leaving two thirds of the country under the control of Serb and Croat extremists, while the remainder had become a predominantly Muslim Bosniak-inhabited area. Challenging the opposing stereotypes of "Islamic fundamentalism" and "multi-ethnic Bosnia" the author seeks to establish what really happened in Bosnian internal politics during the war. He shows that Bosnia-Herzegovina's war of independence was genuinely multi-national and pluralistic at its inception, but under the impact of external aggression, internal treason and international betrayal it changed into an essentially Bosnian Muslim struggle for survival.

Hoare's book is of exceptional importance precisely because it is not part of the propaganda war that is taking place outside Bosnia's borders about Bosnia and its recent past. Rather, it represents an attempt to explore, without succumbing to the two dominant stereotypes of `Islamic fundamentalism' and `multi-ethnic Bosnia', how and why a war that began as a defence of Bosnia ended as a Bosniak struggle for survival... In his introduction to Hoare's book Brendan Simms, author of the best analysis published thus far of British diplomacy regarding the war in Bosnia-Herzegovina, says that he wishes he had been in a position to consult the work when writing his own. Hoare's approach to Bosnia differs from that of participants in, or witnesses of, the events that he covers; but his advantage lies in the fact that, being neither, he is not a prisoner of memories. The idea that the war should end without a victory was certainly not Bosnian, but his book explains the circumstances that led it to be accepted at the very point when the Army of Bosnia-Herzegovina was poised to win the war, leading to the surprising conclusion of the war ending in neither victory nor defeat. His research is important for all those who in their different ways are involved with Bosnia, but it is only a Bosnian translation of the work that will permit a critical reading of it, by counterposing the Army of Bosnia-Herzegovina's own image of itself with that reconstructed by the British historian.

In the view of Dr. Martin Sicker, it was with the emergence of Islam that the combination of geopolitics and religion reached its most volatile form and provided the ideological context for war and peace in the Middle East for more than a millennium. The conflation of geopolitics and religion in Islam is predicated on the concept of jihad (struggle), which may be understood as a crescentade, in the same sense as the later Christian crusade, which seeks to achieve a religious goal, the conversion of the world to Islam, by militant means. This equates to a concept of perpetual war with the non-Muslim world, a concept that underlays Muslim geopolitical thinking throughout the thousand-year period covered in this book. However, as Sicker amply demonstrates, the concept often bore little relation to the political realities of the region that as often as not saw Muslims and non-Muslims aligned against and at war with other Muslims. The story of the emergence and phenomenal ascendancy of the Islamic world from a relatively small tribe in sparsely populated Arabia is one that taxes the imagination, but it becomes more comprehensible when viewed through a geopolitical prism. Religion was repeatedly and often shamelessly harnessed to geopolitical purpose by both Muslims and Christians, albeit with arguably greater Muslim success. Islamic ascendancy began as an Arab project, initially focused on the Arabian peninsula, but was soon transformed into an imperialist movement with expansive ambitions. As it grew, it quickly registered highly impressive gains, but soon lost much of its Arab content. It ended a millennium later as a Turkish--more specifically, an Ottoman--project with many intermediate transformations. The reverberations of the thousand-year history of that ascendancy are still felt today in many parts of the greater Middle East.
