5 out of 5 stars Hearth and home.......2001-03-28

"Frank Lloyd Wright's Fireplaces," by Carla Lind, explores one particular facet of the work of this great architect. This book is part of a series of "mini-books" devoted to Wright. But despite the book's small scale (5.25 by 5.25 inches, 57 pages), Lind has packed in a wealth of words and images.

The book contains Lind's insightful text, as well as a wealth of illuminating sidebar quotes from Wright and others. There are many detailed, full-color photographs of stunning fireplaces. There is even a delightful historic black-and-white photo of Wright himself playing the piano near one of his fireplaces.

Houses represented in the book include the Hollyhock house, the Hanna house, Fallingwater, and many others. Each fireplace is a beautiful work of art which seems like an organic, integral part of the home. This book will surely delight fans of Wright, and of home design in general.

5 out of 5 stars Fun to carve.......2006-07-01

I am a beginner and I found this book fun. Each year I carve a different one for my daughters. They are just the right size for a shelf or to hang on the tree. I found it very easy to follow.

5 out of 5 stars Best approach to Santa carving I have ever seen!.......2004-08-26

I have been carving Santas for some time now and have seen most books on the subject. I am really impressed with the unique technique employed in the book. This is great for beginners because it lays out a methodical approach to carving. Best of all, you don't need a bandsaw to make a cutout....just a block of wood and a few basic carving knives. This book is excellent because it uses plenty of photographs to teach--you could learn just by looking at the pictures. I enjoy this book because it made me realize how rewarding it is to start with a block of wood and a knife and end up with a great carving rather than cut out a rough shape with the bandsaw and then carve. This is the book to buy if you want to learn to carve or learn a more efficient carving method. Pay no attention to the few who rate it low. I can't fathom how they can rate it low......they need to realize that this is an art and it takes patience and focus to learn. They must have been carving with the wrong end of the knife.

5 out of 5 stars A must for beginning and intermediate Santa carvers........2004-01-08

This is an excellent book and I am thoroughly enjoying each of the projects. Usually carving books don't give good painting details, but this one does. Also, most of the books I have used in the past tend to have all the projects look much the same. I'm amazed at the individuality of each of the 15 projects.

One thing that is unique in this carving book is how the patterns are drawn. You need to see the patterns like a draftsman design. But I found this perspective very helpful in developing the carvings.

For those who are absolute beginners in Santa carving, I'd suggest the Santa Carving book by Ron Ransom.

3 out of 5 stars not for beginners.......2003-11-23

For a beginner who never carved before this book was difficult, drawing in the patterns, carving the eyes, nose ,etc. I don't think the writer had the beginner in mind.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Beginner and Intermediate fun.......2003-11-13

This book has details that are complete and thorough enough to accomplish a project even if you are a beginning carver. If you have experience, it provides good direction for advancing your skills. An excellent choice for Santa carving.

    Book Description

This is a thoroughly illustrated study of the close and continuous relationship between two of modern culture’s central phenomena: the photographic image and travel. Contributing to the growing literature of travel and its representations, the book argues that from its beginnings, photography has played a constitutive role in the formation of travel--comparable in importance to its part in the portrayal of social identity. It shows how, in turn, travel has shaped the use and language of all types of photographic production.

Help from your own "pregnancy trainer"!

Encouraging, witty, understanding, calm—Betty Parsons is someone pregnant women love to listen to. During her long career, Betty has coached more than 20,000 women through childbirth. Now, with Preparing for Childbirth, you can take advantage of her unique insights and practical suggestions to get ready for one of the most exciting experiences of your life—having a baby.

Betty takes the mystery out of labor, so you'll know what to expect, what to do, and how to meet the challenge with confidence instead of fear. Expectant fathers will learn how they can support their partners in the best possible way.

This charmingly illustrated book will help both of you learn what changes to expect as the months pass and how to cope with them, from emotional swings to physical discomforts to typical annoyances (including relatives who say the wrong things or visitors who drop by at the wrong time). Betty's tone is so sensitive and personal, you'll consider her your own "pregnancy trainer"!

At the heart of it all is Betty's own formula for proper breathing and relaxation, which can be used throughout pregnancy, during labor—and after. She proves that learning to take good care of your emotional needs during pregnancy is every bit as important as proper nutrition, exercise and checkups are to your physical health.

5 out of 5 stars Wreaking Havoc: Outstanding book !.......2007-01-26

Wreaking Havoc is an outstanding book well worth the money. The author was in the 312th Bomb Group from Hollandia, New Guinea and later he flew with the 389th Squadron, until the end of the Philippines Campaign and the Formosa Campaign. This year of battle left the author with many interesting comments and views of the war. He has included a number of excellent black and white photographs. As a pilot he does explain some technical things about the Douglas A-20 Havoc. He explains these things in a very easy to understand fashion for the non-pilots among us. He correlates his story with several clear and easy to read maps. After I turned fifty years old, maps became harder to read and these maps are clear and easy to read! He also speaks of his neighbor Bomb Group the 3rd Attack Group as they call it. He has excellent insight in military matters. The author says he has attended many reunions since 1948 and has drawn not only on his own recollections but also on the recollections of his fellow pilots and offical records. He does such an excellent job that I would like to see another volume come out in the future. This book is for the most part a people book. These are real people and he explains how they deal with war from day to day. While this does have some explanations of battles he was in, this is not the focus of the book. If you want to learn the history of the Army Air Corps battles in the Pacific War you should look to another book. This book is about men, their flying machines, and war. In this context it is a very well written book that was not only fun to read but also very informative. If I was given the opportunity to turn back time and buy this book again I would buy it without question!

2 out of 5 stars Not much action..........2006-01-05

This book only helped me understand a little more about the A-20 from a purely technical viewpoint. There was very little combat to speak of until one big mission over the Phillipines in 1944. I was expecting some more barge hunting, attacks on sea convoys and such.

I've already read enough books on the Pacific war from a variety of campaigns to know about life during the island hopping campaigns and such. So, this book came as quite a disappointment.

Not badly written, but not really a lot to sink one's teeth into.

5 out of 5 stars Substantial Story About the A20........2004-05-24

"Wreaking Havoc" by Joseph W. Rutter, Sub-titled, "a Year In An A-20". Texas A& M University Press, 2004.

For many of us who were young boys during World War II, or directly after, the most famous aircraft were the big bombers: the B17 "Flying Fortress", the B24 "Liberator" and the B29 "Superfortress". The relatively small A20 "Havoc" was hardly mentioned.

This book corrects that ommission. Joseph Rutter flew the A20 "Havoc" in some 64 combat missions in the A20 in the Pacific Theatre. The author lists all 64 missions on pages xv through xxi in the preface to the his book , which is quite a personal memoir of his war. The book actually starts with his father getting the author out of bed "...at 6 A.M. on Sunday, September 3, 1939 to listen to Great Britain's declaration of war on Germany..." Page 8. The author then tells of growing up, graduating high school, going to work for the FBI, and then leaving for flight school. He learned to fly both the B25 "Mitchell" and the A20 "Havoc", but it is apparent, in my humble opinion, that Mr. Rutter really loved the A20 the best.

The book presents many details about the A20, with pictures scattered appropriately throughout the book. On page 105, the photo shows a pilot, Maury Owen, seated in an A20 cockpit. It is a tight fit. A big person, (say, the actor John Wayne, for easy identification), could never fit in the standard A20 cockpit. Rutter gives many somewhat technical details about flying the A20, including setting the manifold pressure to prevent backfiring of the engines, how to lean the gas mixture to fly the maximum distance and the proper method of firing the guns to prevent jams, and all of this material makes you understand in small fashion what it was like to live and fly in the Pacific War. Since the author was able to develop many of the pictures he snapped , he was able to bring the photos home with him. Therefore, the book is nicely illustrated with contemporary photos , including, for example, the village church at Dagupan, Luzon, the Philippines. (Page 184).

If you want a complete story of what it was like, flying and fighting in the Pacific Theater in World War II, this book is an excellent choice.

5 out of 5 stars An in-depth recounting of the horrors of war.......2004-03-04

Wreaking Havoc: A Year In An A-20 by Joseph W. Rutter (who served with the 312th Bomb Group in the Southwest Pacific and completed 63 missions over New Guinea and the Phillippines) is the personal story of an A-208 airplane, nicknamed "the Havoc" for the damage it inflicted, during 1944 in the Pacific theater. An in-depth recounting of the horrors of war and the singular experience of piloting airborne destruction for the sake of one's country, Wreaking Havoc is a riveting testimony and a highly recommended addition to World War II and Military Aviation studies reading lists and reference collections.

4 out of 5 stars Flying with the pilot.......2004-03-04

Mr. Rutter has done an outstanding job of describing his experience in WWII. He takes you from his beginings in western Penn. thru training in Colorado and North Carolina, to combat missions in New Guinea and the PI. His writing technique lets you feel that he's with you and telling you about his experience flying A-20's. It's similar to (but not quite as good as) Guy Sajer's The Forgotten Soldier.

I've rated the book as a 4 out of 5 (it's really 4.5 out of 5) because I was hoping for a little more description on his combat experience. On the plus side, he does describe several missions outstandingly (his mission straffing Clark was done very well), but unfortunatly, I'd like to have had a little more description.

                  Book Description

This anthology of autobiographical essays reveals the human side of the Chinese diaspora. Written by ethnic Chinese who were born or raised outside of China, these moving pieces, full of the poignant details of everyday life, describe the experience of growing up as a visible minority and the subsequent journey each author made to China. The authors--whose diverse backgrounds in countries such as New Zealand, Denmark, Sri Lanka, England, Indonesia, and the United States mirror the complex global scope of the Chinese diaspora--describe in particular how their journey to the country of their ancestors transformed their sense of what it means to be Chinese. The collection as a whole provides important insights into what ethnic identity has come to mean in our transnational era.
Among the pieces is Brad Wong's discussion of his visit to his grandfather's poverty-stricken village in China's southern Guangdong province. He describes working with a few of the peasants tilling vegetables and compares life in the village with his middle-class upbringing in a San Francisco suburb. In another essay, Milan Lin-Rodrigo tells of her life in Sri Lanka and of the trip she made to China as an adult. She describes the difficult and sometimes humorous cultural differences she experienced when she met her Chinese half-sister and her father's first wife.
Josephine Khu's lively afterword provides background information on the Chinese diaspora and gives a theoretical framework for understanding the issues raised in the essays. This intimate and rich anthology will be compelling reading for all who are seeking answers to the increasingly complex issue of ethnic and personal identity.

5 out of 5 stars Searching for Chinese roots in Taishan.......2003-08-14

A remarkable book consisting of 13 narratives recruited via the Internet from Chinese living all over the globe who decided to go to villages in Taishan from where their parents has emigrated. The tales are very well written, and reveal the tremendous need that these descendants of immigrants have to visit the birthplaces of their parents. The sample is quite diverse with respect to gender and age, but most, if not all, are highly educated professionals who were willing to reflect on the impact of their visits and to describe their lives growing up as mostly poor minority group members in the countries where their parents moved to. Despite this one 'shortcoming', this collection should be read by anyone wanting to know more about the lives of Chinese immigrants and their children.
