This is a nice 'little' gift to give to a Wright fan, but it is not comprehensive enough to tell you what the whole Usonian thing was all about.
It would have gotten more stars if the price was a couple of dollars less.
Tiny, almost useless book.......2007-05-24
This is a tiny hard cover book. "At a glance" is an over statement. More like a drive-by book. The pictures can be found elsewhere (larger and more complete) and the historical info is nil (and also found elsewhere.) Had I know this I would have not wasted my $10.00 on this.
The Wright house for the rest of us!.......1999-07-09
This is a beautiful short introduction to the late and often smaller houses built by Wright after 1935, appropriately published in a purse-size book (part of a series). While less well known than his Prairie houses, these Usonians are the houses that YOU and I could afford! (Well...the smallest gem, Goetsch--built for $7,137.23--just sold for c.$225,000.) You will see here the beginning of many cliches of "modern houses:" single storys, open plans, lots of glass, dinettes, carports, etc. Only, these look beautiful! Why? Some idea of the awesome power of integrated design, inside and out, even at a tiny scale, is given in the small pictures of rich color. No "interior decoration" for Wright! Carla Lind is an extraordinarily evocative writer on Wright, and distills deep aesthetic insights into a brief focused text. If you like the magic you see here, then be sure to get Sargeant's book (Frank Lloyd Wright's Usonian Houses) to understand how these are designed and built (or seek Susan J. Bandes, Affordable Dreams. Kresge Art Museum Bulletin 6. Michigan State University. 1991). Enjoy.

Not the same as the big coffee table books I have on Wright, but a useful tome. It is an overview of Usonian houses and if you only saw this book you would still be in awe of Wright's vision and design. I am particularly drawn to his furnishings and builtins in these houses.

This book is a must for those who collect or are interested in collecting Contemporary Jewelry as an Art form. Because Helen knows a number of the artists personnally, she is able to provide the reader with an in-depth perspective of the artists work and inspiration. While a fair number of the artists are european, Helen also focuses on American artists both established and up-and-coming. A definite read for Jewelry enthusiasts!!

Valedictory for a Great Artist.......2005-06-01
PAUL STRAND: SIXTY YEARS OF PHOTOGRAPHS is an immensely successful book. Not only is it a true pleasure to renew acquaintance with the famous images of Paul Strand, it is the knowledge that Strand himself selected the images to be included in this book just before his death in 1976. Calvin Tomkins provides a sensitive and insightful history and eulogy and elected to include documents of Strand's correspondence and various writings to round out this memento mori.
But words are words and cannot begin to explain the simple, haunting beauty of the photographic images of Paul Strand. Whether the viewer's preference is for the portraits of mesmerizing faces captured in the direct simplicity of an encounter on the street or for the light sculpted landscapes or the still life images that are rich in metaphor, this collection of Strand's work is simply impeccable. The only appropriate words this reviewer can summon would be those encouraging lovers of fine art to buy this collection. It is Strand's own valedictory to an immeasurably important career. The Genius Of Al Capp.......2003-04-05
Al Capp was on the verge of reaching his peak- a peak he would maintain for many, many years- in these great 1939 newspaper strips. The drawing style is getting bolder and funnier and Capp's visual and narrative satire is beginning to hit a stride that put him at the top of his medium and at the forefront of American popular culture. "Li'l Abner" is a great American work of art, and boy, is it funny stuff. This beautiful series of books is a Godsend from revered publisher Denis Kitchen, and reestablishes Capp's important place as a twentieth century artist and writer.
My favorite sequence here has Abner posing as a college student ("Oh,Happy Collidge Days!!") as a couple of equally-disguised gangsters try to kill him. While being shoved off a cliff and into a river, tied to a boulder, Abner enthuses "This is mah first collidge hazin'!!" Buy all 27 volumes of this priceless series and take the phone off the hook for a few months.

Andrew Scobell's book China's Use of Military Force gives Western readers and government professionals a fascinating insight into Communist China's historical use of military power. This book is not overburdened by verbiage and reads quite easily, and makes some potent insights into the mindset of Chinese leaders. With China and Taiwan a ongoing hot button issue, this book is especially relevant.
Scobell argues that the Chinese government's decision making process for military actions has always been one of the "cult of defense". What is unusual about this doctrine is that their notion of self-defense includes aggresive offensive action to counter the possibility of a threat to their borders as well as their Communist leadership. The most notable examples of this are the border war with Vietnam in the 70's and the Chinese intervention in Korea in 1950. Scobell also argues that the "cult of defense" includes internal matters that threaten the stability of the communist leadership, ie Tianamen Square. Despite commonly held beliefs that it is the PLA military leaders who wish for action, in most cases it has been the civilian government pushing for action with the military arguing for restraint.
What does this mean for the future? Scobell believes that the established use of this doctrine makes it more likely that China would act aggresively in the future towards its neighbors, IF it feels that the neighbor's actions threaten them in some manner. It is not quite clear what boundries limit this theory, for example, would the Chinese use military force to secure the entire Spratly Island chain if it believed that other countries would attempt to access its oil fields? Based on Scobell's thesis, the answer would likely be yes. Overall a well argued and researched book, and one not to be taken lightly when discussing the strategic situation in Asia.

This book isn't idiot proof but..........2006-01-04
As a lazy guy I would like to see a cd rom full of predeveloped excel .xls & powerpoint .ppt preformated files so that I only have to input numbers to spit out presentable data, charts & graphs. I think the later edition has a cd with some preset math / data files. However, this book is a start. I would recommend the reader to read (purchase?) other statistical quality control books & material to complement this book. If you are math heavy it would help in understand SQC & SPC. As the only book that is titled specifically for the food industry I will treat this book with respect & TLC (until my company's audit is over).
bad organization..........2001-06-19
It could be a reasonably fair Quality Control pocket book if at least the organization would make any sense. Some examples: Reference to HACCP made in the middle of a chapter about Acceptance Sampling (?????); in one chapter control chart construction is explained, several chapters ahead there is a small chapter dealing with interpretation of control charts; Benchmarking is adressed in a chapter about process capability (????). It look likes a collection of separate notes "glued" together in a very peculiar way!
