Architectural Joy.......2007-08-16
A fascinating book, covering the now mostly demolished great homes of New York, during the extraordinary flowering of wealth and enterprise in the late C19th.
All the famous families appear together with Edith Wharton style stories of scandal and excess...
The book boasts beautiful photographs, attractively reproduced, and fascinating floor plans.
Great Houses is exceptionally well written and a joy to the eye. One for architecture enthusiasts everywhere!
awesome book.......2006-06-23
A must read for design, architecture and house enthusiasts. Well written and althought all pictures are in black and white they are fabulous. An easy read full of great backgound and rich in history.
Gilded Age New York.......2005-07-15
I have been waiting for a book like this for some time, and this one does not disappoint. It is well researched with wonderful historic black and white photos. The book is of the finest quality and the text is well put together. This is such an interesting subject and the authors are very thorough in their research, the book really feels complete. I highly recommend it to anyone with any interest in wonderful Gilded Age residental architecture or just an interest in the rich history of this great city. I can't imagine anyone being disappointed in this book and I commend the authors on doing such a fine job on a most worthy subject. Thank you.

Customer Reviews:
thank you.......2007-04-06
I purchased this book for my husband who served in Viet Nam. He appreciated the detail in the book. It is a testament to all those who have served in 'the Nam'.
Good addition.......2006-02-26
I think this is a great book and I have enjoyed it very much. I think it would be a fantastic addition for history buffs- especially those who enjoy American or military history. I have quite an extensive library of these types of books, and I'm very glad to now have this one in my collection.
Despite some of these comments, the collection of pictures and stories are very well done. I'm glad it doesn't have the same pictures as every other book about this time period. It is obviously not a history of the country of Viet Nam. It never claims to be- it is simply a history of American involvment in this war.
Anyone who actually likes history without slants and with straight facts, this is a good book for you. Buy it, enjoy it, and learn something about this important time in American history. I know I have.
Hooah!
Good Book.......2006-01-17
This more and answer to Mr Nguyen, then a review. Mr Nguyen can hardly be considered an objective reviewer. His scolding of the author for calling it NAM
is almost childish. As someone whose been there I can say the country itself is
beautiful, for a stone age country.
Mr Nguyen should know that we Americans use verbal short hand all the time.
And besides; thats what we the soldiers in that war called it at the time. I think
at the time we were showing the ut-most respect for that country and it's people
by trying to allow South Vietnam to exist without interference from the Communitsts
in the North. The fact that most of them didn't care enough to fight for themselves
has been noted historically.
The fact of the matter is this is a really good collection of pictures from that war.
As has been noted by other reviews it may a some inacuracies. But they don't harm
the experience.
My thanks to the author for putting this out for the public to see.
Is is a History of Vietnam? Or is it a history of American involvement in Vietnam?.......2005-08-15
This is an American-centric view of Vietnam War. The chosen title NAM for the book already is seemed to say that these authors do not care to respect the word Vietnam, the country, people, and its national interest. (NAM, literally means South like "Yugo" (Yugoslavia, or Southern Slavs). In fact, they never even respect the name of the country, as we know it. Moreover, these authors tend to call people names such as Ngo Dinh Diem, the president of Disaster, McNamara, the statistical man. By contrast, Ho Chi Minh was sincerely mentioned as Uncle Ho in the same tone as if they would have mentioned Uncle Sam. In the eyes of many Vietnamese, I do not think their writers would put down nicknames or call signs on paper any president of the United States, who should be responsible for the suppression of protesters during the civil right movement. American/Western centric position is a problem to Vietnamese people, who buy and read the book. Through out the book, there is no footnotes or citations. This is not a scholarly work. Nonetheless, it was designed to catch the public eyes with pictures as an album interpreting how the entire world works in the eyes of American "scholars."
A great photo compilation; good 'Nam encyclopedia.......2004-08-19
This is a wonderful Vietnam encyclopedia that is well worth the price and the considerable space it takes up on your bookshelf. The pictures alone make a significant contribution to the study and understanding of Vietnam.
The book is categorized nicely by year, so the reader can pick a year and jump right in. The text is somewhat stilted and abbreviated at times - how can Richard Nixon be adequately explained on one page of large text? But to a reader new to Vietnam study, this book is a nice start.
One more word about the pictures - it's interesting to note that two of the most famous pictures of the war are absent from this text. The first one, of a naked girl running down a road, burned, after an errant U.S. napalm strike; and the second one of a helicopter on the top of a roof near the U.S. embassy shortly before the fall of Saigon, certainly belong in any book that professes to be a photographic history of Vietnam. Also missing is a Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph of a woman running to greet a returning POW after he steps off a plane. Perhaps these absences are a matter of copyright permission? But, this is a minor complaint, really. This text brings together so many startling and educational pictures about the war, it more than makes up for the absence of a few famous pictures.
One additional point about the text - it's interesting to note the political bent the authors allow to creep into the text (intentionally?). On the topic of draft dodgers, the authors take several shots at President Clinton. In one instance, Daugherty and Mattson bring up a right-wing bumper sticker from 1992: "What's the difference between Jane Fonda and Clinton? Fonda went to Vietnam." In another instance the authors state as fact how Clinton tried to have incriminating documents of his "draft dodging" destroyed during the '92 election. (They offer no proof, but state it as fact.) I guess it's because this is a political year that I even noticed it, but readers could do without this kind of stuff. I wonder why the authors didn't offer any jibes at George W. Bush for having signed up for the National Guard, getting to skip over hundreds of people because of his surname, in order to avoid service in Vietnam? My point is not to defend "Hanoi Jane" for her despicable actions or for Clinton's having dodged the draft, but that there are plenty of people, millions in fact, of all political persuasions who dodged the draft to avoid going to Vietnam. This kind of debate should be presented in a non-partisan manner in a book like this, or not at all.
However, this is a great book worthy of space on any history enthusiast's bookshelf, and I'm happy to own it.

Kill Me If You Can, You SOB is a judicious, penetrating record of the Vietnam War as experienced by an ordinary soldier. Through diary entries written over three decades ago, we get a rare and illuminating glimpse into one of America's greatest tragedies. Bob Miller's unflinching observations not only expose the harsh realities of war, but also provide a long-overdue tribute to the men who fought it.

If Hunter S. Thompson had been a warrant officer..........2007-07-18
The more I read of Miller's work, the more I like it. Like HST, Miller is a born curmudgeon, cynic, and rebel. I cracked up when his commander described him as "he'll never make general but he'll get you there and back." No grunt ever had a truer, more unconditional friend.
This memoir hit particularly close to home for me as it detailed the author's experiences as a warrant officer chopper pilot in Phan Thiet, Vietnam from May '68 to May '69. I graduated flight school in Jan '69 but ended up in Korea. This account showed me a lot of what I missed. Miller shared several photos of the Vietnam chopper pilot experience in his book. You can see more if you Google "192nd Assault Helicopter Company". I also recommend Googling "View the Wall" and searching for Arann and Thoman, Miller's comrades in the 192nd--a very moving experience.
Our country owes the Vietnam vet more than it can ever repay. In my estimate, the greatest of them are the ones who rejected the party line but showed up for duty anyway. A tip of the hat to Bob Miller.

Currahee.......2007-07-11
This pilot supported the Currahees with the best he had to give and has put the same into ths book. Agree with him or not, he tells it like it was and I'd be proud to ride with him anytime anywhere. I was there, too and he didn't skimp a bit on Blackhawk. My only disappointment was when it ended so fast.

A Great Book.......1999-09-11
In July of 1968 I found myself standing in line ready to start basic training at Ft Dix N.J. Standing next to me was a hippie - long hair, beard, hippie clothes. That hippie was Mark Jury and over the next two months we became close friends. Mark detested the war, as did I, but he was determined to see it first hand. Mark expected to be assigned to the infantry but in its infinite wisdom, the Army assigned Mark to the Information Service - or some such thing - and gave him free reign to cover Vietnam. The result is this wonderful book. I went on to Offocer Candidate School and ended up in Vietnam several years later. I was assigned to the cushy part of Vietnam working for the generals. Mark shows this part in all its opulent, luxurious silliness but he also shows the dirty part where the "canon fodder"- kids just out of high school - got shot. He shows the Vietnamese hospitals where children misfortunate enough to stumble onto mines were sent. He shows the insanity of racism among the GI's. In a word, he shows it all. The pictures are powerful and they are enhanced by Mark's perceptive commentary. If you want to see what Vietnam was like, read this book.
To me, this book shows what the Vietnam war was like........1997-08-01
This book shows it all: the fun, the botherhood, the grief, the stupidity, the arrogance, the cynicism. When someone asks "what was vietnam like?" I set them down with this book.
Jury is an honest photojournalist with a young person's eye. The photos are straightforward, clear, well composed, non gimmicky.
A good book. Any Vietnam vet should have a copy.

Paul Brodeur spent 40 years at the New Yorker, writing about everything from asbestos hazards to the dangers of ozone depletion and power line magnetic fields. Here, he recounts the common thread running through such stories: the Cold War psychology that permitted government and industry to operate under a veil of unanswerable secrecy, and his attempts, as a reporter, to find answers after all. Brodeur faces secrets in his own life, too, from a failed first marriage, to the death of a child, and life as a surveillance target. Secrets is a compelling interweaving of both the world's life, and a single man's.

Book Description
In With a Daughter's Eye, writer and cultural anthropologist Mary Catherine Bateson looks back on her extraordinary childhood with two of the world's legendary anthropologists, Margaret Mead and Gregory Bateson. This deeply human and illuminating portrait sheds new light on her parents' prodigious achievements and stands alone as an important contribution for scholars of Mead and Bateson. But for readers everywhere, this engaging, poignant, and powerful book is first and foremost a singularly candid memoir of a unique family by the only person who could have written it.
Customer Reviews:
History of the Personal.......2005-11-26
Margaret Mead was one of my heroines when I was growing up. How fascinating to read this biography which is a blend of intellectual and up close and personal history of her. To have her husband, Gregory Bateson included is icing on the cake. Mary Catherine has done an extremely creditble job. For example, she writes, "Margaret always emphasized the importance of recording first impressions . . . for . . . the informed eye has its own blindness as it begins to take for granted things that were initially bizarre." As I read of Margaret's reaction to Mary Catherine's wedding -- that it must be a format that reflected Margaret and Gregory's place in the world, rather than just the personal joy and celebration of a daughter, I had to wonder if Mary Catherine ever connected the above passage to her own children. This daughter writes with a fairly clear eye about her parents. They are neither great untouchable icons, nor are they flawed little humans. I suspect she did a great deal of balancing in her own emotions to come up with the portraits she painted because, in truth, we have three portraits here, all interconnected and somehow, ongoing. Not a superficial book.
One of the best!.......2004-12-30
I enjoyed the careful description of two legendary lives observed by the author as a daughter and an anthropologist. As a piece of anthropological writing, a certain distance is maintained when the author tells of her memories of growing up with her parents and the relationship between them. Yet, I can still detect her sadness and love in the seemingly unemotional and impersonal writing style. Often, significant feelings are embedded in the scientific explaination of her parents' theories and ideas. I not only gained a better understanding of the field of anthropology, but also find the "differences" (such as different kinds of families, marriages, choices, ideas, personalities) that we encounter in life as descriped by the author enriching.

Just another way most muslim men deny females importance and honour in this world!!! .......2005-10-13
...the fact is, I have lived amongst these people in both KARACHI AND MIDDLE EAST COUNTRIES...they do not treat men well either that they deem homosexual because they know that it is unnatural and immoral according to their own narrow-minded belief system, but true to (their hypocritical) form, they somehow deem gay sex as "cleaner" and gay men, even when looked down upon, still have more respect than women, who are the majority of men's first and only true heartfelt choice as a mate, both in and out of bed WORLDWIDE. Gay men are a minority class, even in the Middle East, but yet women are treated as inferior by this hostile and inimical to society mindset.(Why didnt they at least superficially describe lesbianism in the Middle East, I assure you, IT DOES EXIST, as MANY arab women cannot stand the overbearing and arrogant men over there, even the ones they are forced to marry.) How anyone, gay or straight, can find brutish, ignorant and intolerant behaviour "sexy" is totally beyond me!!
This must be a joke!!.......2005-01-26
To say that Islam tolerates Homosexuality is a very humorous claim indeed. This author focuses on practices done by corrupt muslims who do not even read their own book. The Quran numerously talks about Homosexuality, Condeming it over and over. First it warns the men not to leave their wives and go for other men. Another verse states How God dealt a destructive Force (severe storms) on the People of "Lot" that instantly killed all their inhabitants as punishment for such a sinful act. Then there are the VAST testimonies of Homosexual muslim who choose not to engage in Homosexual acts and lead a Heterosexual life in order not to Sin in the name of God. I could go on, this is so pathetic that it's not even worth my time reviewing this. MY ADVICE, BEFORE YOU BELIEVE IN SOMETHING SOMEONE SAYS OR WRITES ABOUT, do your own independant research to see if the author is honest or just a fanatic. In this cas go read what the Quran really says about homosexuals.
An Excellent Mix.......2003-05-01
Of all books on the topic: the Best. First, it's honest--other editors give them impression that their book is on Indonesian, Nigeria and US-Muslims, but it is--just as this one--on the area from Casablanca to Karachi. Or that lesbians figure in their book--they do not.
Yes, one finds testimonies in Schmitt/Sofer, by most of them by Palestinians, Israelis, Turks and a Pakistani--not Westerners.
But one finds scholarly stuff as well--yet not in academic lingo.
And this book got the highest accolade by people concerned...
sexy,it was very sexy.......1999-10-01
I found this book was a very worth while read. It gave me a great insight into the pleasures of homosexuallity amongst muslim men.I found it helped me find myself and thus forfilled my pleasures.
Gay sex tourists whine about Arab men.......1998-11-22
Along with the heavy-handed attacks by Arno Schmitt of Charles Pellat's work reprinted herein and of John Boswell, are a number of superficial accounts by 1970s gay sex tourists disappointed that the Arabs they let f*** them didn't treat them well. Except for an interesting chapter on "not-so-gay life in Karachi" and a survey of laws in Muslim societies, the books is mostly about Arabs (with some uninformative chapters on Turks and Persians). In contrast _Islamic Homosexualities_ by Murray & Roscoe (NYU, 1997) has greater geographical, cultural, and historical scope, less animus for scholars such as Pellat, and none of the tedious whining of disappointed European and American sex tourists.

Book Description
Over four days at the beginning of September AD 9, half of Rome's Western army was ambushed in a German forest and annihilated. Three legions, three cavalry units and six auxiliary regiments - some 25,000 men - were wiped out. It dealt a body blow to the empire's imperial pretensions and was Rome's greatest defeat. No other battle stopped the Roman empire dead in its tracks. From the moment of the Teutoburg Forest disaster, the Rhine, rather than the Elbe as the Romans had hoped, became the limit of the civilized world. Rome's expansion in northern Europe was checked and Rome anxiously patrolled the Rhineland borders, awaiting further uprisings from Germania. Although one of the most significant and dramatic battles in European history, this is also one which has been largely overlooked. Drawing on primary sources and a vast wealth of new archaeological evidence, Adrian Murdoch brings to life the battle itself, the historical background and the effects of the Roman defeat as well as exploring the personalities of those who took part.

Dark Day for Rome.......2007-09-25
Excellent account of a key battle. The history of how the battle has been depicted and interpreted is an important part of this story and the book does a nice job of this as well.
Great on the battle itself, but too politicized.......2007-09-25
I recently read Wells's book THE BATTLE THAT STOPPED ROME on the same subject and which Murdoch cites a few times. It was filled with information but a bit dry, whereas this present volume is much richer and more interesting on the ancient historical aspects and background to the 'Varusschlacht' (or 'Hermannschlact') and its immediate aftermath. The information on Germanicus's shadier side was new to me, although Murdoch doesn't mention his probable assassination by poison (according to Tacitus) but does discuss Drusus, Tiberius, and Augustus very well.
Whether this was Rome's greatest defeat or not, I seriously doubt, as the Cannae of an earlier period on the Italian peninsula, and the serious beating received by the Romans by the Parthians in the east, to mention just two battles, methinks were more serious defeats in numerous ways. Anyway, it =was= a serious event nonethless as losing three entire legions in just a couple of days is very bad news indeed at =any= period of Rome's history, republican or imperial.
Wells incidentally emphasizes the battle's effects on drawing fairly permanent social, political, linguistic, and cultural frontiers on or near the Rhine for the two thousand years after this battle, whereas Murdoch doesn't place quite as much emphasis on that, unfortunately.
A major flaw in this book, in my opinion, is the author's continual references to modern German nationalism and how bad, immoral, dangerous etc. it is - everybody else's is ok of course! - and his drawing the history or mythology of Arminius and what he did for Germany into that debate. What happened in AD 9 has little or no bearing on events in the 1933-45 period, but the paranoia on this carries on nonetheless.
I have to say though that Murdoch's detailed analysis of the usage and misusage of the Teutoburg battle in literature - plays, novels, poetry, etc. - films, mythology, even in opera, popular songs, and suchlike, is very good and very interesting. But always there is this endless harping and obsessive focus on the evils of German nationalism. Presumably Hermann/Arminius is supposed to wring his own hands in guilt in the grave over what others did two millenia later...
At any rate, the author repeatedly condemns the politicization of Hermann and the battle by later writers, politicians, the Nazis, et al, but seems totally oblivious to the just as bad ahistorical politicization of these events to browbeat and degrade German pride and identity - and which he himself indulges in quite a bit in this book. It seems to me that if one group misuses history this way while an opposing group does about the same, then =both= should be critiqued on it. I do get tired of trendy modern political correctness intruding into otherwise serious historical studies.
Good companion book to Tony Clunn's............2007-06-13
I found Adrian Murdoch's book to be pretty well researched and well written on the events that took place in and around Teutoburg Forest that resulted in the destruction of three Roman Legions and their support units. The author definitely didn't waste any pages relating to the events at hand and his background material prior to the massacre proves quite useful and interesting. I found this to be an interesting contrast to the previous book I read on this subject by Peter Wells. Unlike Wells who claims that the entire battle was over within a hour, Murdoch accurately traced a battle that took over several days. His take on the commander, Varus, proves to be insightful since it gave a good reasoning why Augustus may have choosen him as governor of Germany when he did.
I believed the author used all the material available on this campaign to make this a readable and understandable book. His background material prior to the campaign proves to be useful and his efforts to explain what happened after the massacre and its consequences to Rome as well as toward European history also proves to be insightful and interesting. There is also a considerable effort by the author to explained the effect Arminius had on German history through out history to modern period.
Its also nice that the author did give Major Tony Clunn his due credit for basically discovering and opening up the main area where the Romans met their doom. Most of the other authors only give lip service if any to Clunn and his efforts.
On the down side, I thought as some of the previous reviewers thought, there should have more useful maps to this book and more photographs. Both were definitely lacking as visual aids in both would have enchance the reader's understanding. And I too, believed that the author's comparison of Rome and United States' effort in Iraq went beyond the scrope of the book and lent to the only part of the book (only one paragraph) where I thought the author inserted his personal biased of current events to affect what he wrote.
But I can still recommended this book along with the book written by Tony Clunn (Search for the Lost Roman Legions) as two best books on the subject written on the subject matter as for now. I think it would be best if you read both books back to back.
Book That Gives All the Facts Available... Which Aren't Many.......2007-04-23
I had high expectations for this book because I am an enthusiastic reader of German history books, and my knowledge of German history before 800 AD is rather shady. I was very anxious to read a book that showed Germany defeating the Roman empire, and I expected a rather detailed account. Unfortunately, not very much is known about the battle, or the main personalities who the battle centered on. It is explained very well in the book how much is known about the battle, and how much is speculation. The book is rather short, at just under 200 pages. One chapter is dedicated to Varus, the Roman commander, and one to Arminius. A lot of time is spent showing the political, economic, and societal aspects of the Roman and German worlds at the time. This is completed half-way through the book. I was still expecting the last half to be dedicated to the battle. Unfortunately, only 26 pages are dedicated to the battle itself. I cannot complain, however, because there is simply not much known. We only know the general things that happened... such as the spot that the battle occurred on, the general tactics the Germans used, and that a lot of Romans were slaughtered. The last 75 pages or so are dedicated to how this battle has been interpreted in the last 2000 years, and how the progress is going these days on the archaeology side.
Overall, I cannot fault this book for being so short and lacking definitive facts, because this book tells basically everything that is currently known about the battle, and I am fairly sure it is the most accurate and detailed book available currently. I can only hope, however, that more finds are made, and a more accurate and descriptive history will be created some day. This book gets four stars, but not by any fault of the author. It would certainly get five stars if it were simply more informative, which is impossible at this time.
It is a good book that I certainly recommend to anyone interested in the battle, but please know about the short comings of this book.
A well-researched glimpse of the time........2007-02-10
Being a lover of ancient Germanic history, I had to get this book. It wasn't disappointing one bit. The title is a bit misleading though. The actual account of the Battle of Teutoberg Forest in this book is only about 10 pages long. The rest of the 200 pages are dedicated to a detailed description of Varus' political career, Arminius' life as a Roman officer, and the affects that the history of the battle had on later German nationalism. The amount of time and research spent on the archeological discoveries and the flow of the story-telling that Murdoch presents are what make this book well worth the read.

Book Description
The British Victory in Egypt, 1801 recounts and analyzes the story of the British expeditionary force which ejected Napoleon's crack troops from Egypt. Piers Mackesy demonstrates how critically the future of the British Empire depended on the dislodging of the Napoleonic force in the Middle East.
The author's military background allows him to illustrate insightful perspectives into different styles of leadership, the nature of discipline and combat training. Mackesy reveals the high risks involved in the English assault, weighted against the masterful planning and discipline which brought the English victory against the odds. He also highlights the role of Sir Ralph Abercromby, an elderly Scot and leader of the army, and his vitality to the final success of the venture.
The British Victory in Egypt charts a critical episode in European and military history. It also provides a fascinating portrayal of the training, tactics, and strategy of a unique campaign and its executors.
