            Book Description

Raw, Boiled, and Cooked: Comics on the Verge highlights the show of the same name that took place at San Francisco's Museum of Modern Art. Inspired by Art Spiegelman's (Maus) groundbreaking comics anthology Raw, with all the artist's either former contributors or fans, the art here runs the gamut from surprising to shocking to surreally beautiful. Captured in full-color reproductions, this book showcases some of the most important comics being created today.

4 out of 5 stars Some of the best of the "nothing sacred" modern comics.......2007-06-23

When I was young, I devoured comic books. Back then the comics code authority was ruthless in their enforcement of their own brand of morality. Good must always triumph over evil, the closest thing to a curse word was Perry White saying "Great Caesar's Ghost" and only the heroines could have breasts that appeared to be larger than cupcakes. The comics of today have long moved beyond those bounds and there are those who will regret it.
However, the comics of today are a more accurate reflection of the world we live in. People depicted in them have problems; they battle both inner and outer demons. This book is a collection of some of the most memorable "alternative" comics and most are a satire on the rest of the world. My favorite was the multi-page Zippy cartoon, where he is abandoned on the door of a cheap circus. The mindless television of the fifties and sixties and the bible-thumping evangelists are heavily satirized in the captions.
If you are a fan of the modern version of comics that pull no punches and consider nothing to be sacred, then this collection of some of the best of that breed is a book you should read.

              Book Description

The philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) was almost wholly neglected during his sane life, which came to an abrupt end in 1889. Since then he has been appropriated as an icon by an astonishingly diverse spectrum of people, whose interpretations of his thought range from the highly irrational to the firmly analytical. Thus Spoke Zarathustra introduced the 'superman' and The Twilight of the Idols developed the 'Will to Power' concept; these term, together with 'Sklavenmoral' and 'Herrenmoral', became confused with the rise of nationalism in Germany. Idiosyncratic and aphoristic, Nietzsche is always bracing and provocative, and temptingly easy to dip into. Michael Tanner's readable introduction to the philosopher's life and work examines the numerous ambiguities inherent in his writings. It also explodes the many misconceptions fostered in the hundred years since Nietzsche wrote, prophetically: 'Do not, above all, confound me with what I am not!'

              5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-08-08

This is a superb introduction to Nietzsche, one that goes beyond a recitation of works and main points, although it contains that aspect, also. Tanner knows Nietzsche from the ground up, and he has produced an overview and evaluation that is at once sympathetic and tough-minded. For example, there are many who claim that 'Thus Spoke Zarathustra' is Nietzche's greatest book; Tanner explains why it isn't, by a long shot.

Nietzsche's works are complex and unsystematic, his themes are many and sometimes mixed together without warning, and he changed his mind about some of his crucial early concepts and positions later on. All of that makes a short summary and evaluation a very difficult thing to pull off, but Tanner has done it better than anyone. Tanner has also written the introductions to many of the Penguin editions of Nietzche's works. Highest recommendation.

2 out of 5 stars Far too obscure.......2005-08-22

I picked this book up, because I'm interested in getting a high level overview of Nietzsche. The title read Very Short Introduction, so I assumed it would be a great starting point to figure out if I would want to dive into some of Nietzsche complete works and study him over time. Now, I'm not an English major, but I do hold a Masters degree, so I am educated. I found this book terrible in communicating its point. Yes, Tanner has a wonderful command of the English language, but does his book really need to require a dictionary to read? It's almost as if he ran it through a software thesaurus that converted every word to the most obscure word he could possibly use. Yes, Mr. Tanner your language is impressive, but if the average reader, like me, can't understand you then what's the point? Keep it simple; always use the simplest most widely used words to communicate the point. Anything else is just egotistical in my opinion.

              3 out of 5 stars Somwhat confused.......2005-06-12

Nietzche is indeed a rather interesting philosopher however I feel after reading this book that I still do not know much about his philosophy. I can contrast this to the outstanding VSI book on Kant from which I think I learned a great deal. The author has the tendency to write very obscurely which is not a good thing for these kind of books which are written about authors or subject matter that often considered obscure to begin with. I think one would do a lot better just to pick up one of Nietzche's books and have a go at it.

5 out of 5 stars A comment on the opening chapter only-misreadings .......2005-03-29

In his opening chapter Tanner claims that Nietzsche has been appropriated by the most diverse groups. Neitzsche Tanner claims is the most written about philosopher in the world today. He claims that he has been the patron saint of post- modernists and deconstructionists, structuralists and other academic schools of reading texts. He mentions but does not dwell upon the evil and horrible misreading of Nietzsche made by the Nazis. Neitzsche Tanner seems to say has been adopted by all kinds of different people and schools all of whom put his work to use for their own purposes.
In this regard Tanner points out the negative influence of the publication of Nietzsche's notebooks and journals. He claims that often these were half- baked ideas and not what Nietzsche would have necessarily presented to the public. He points out how careful Nietzsche was in polishing , and even rewriting whole works. And he claims that the published writings are far superior in their style and quality of thought than the notebooks.
In contradiction to this it seems to me that none of Nietzche's major ideas, not the will-to -power, not the 'eternal recurrence' and certainly not the ' ubermensch superman idea ' are of positive value to mankind today. I would even maintain that his telling insight into the cultural state of Europe in which the West seemed at his time to lose the meaningfulness given by a felt presence of the Divine ,is not a final definition even for the old continent. So too his critique of Christianity , his contempt for the idea of Christian equality seems to me to not be of any real positive human value.
It seems to me that the religious and philosophical problems facing Mankind today , including the problems created by Mankind's unending usurpation of Divine powers have no real answer in Nietzsche. Our world in which we are the threshhold of ' enhanced human beings' ' cloning ' ' two hundred year life spans' ' possible nuclear destruction' is not really the one that Nietzsche lived in. In this regard it seems to me it is not Nietzsche alone among the great philosophers in not really addressing the kind of unprecedented Reality mankind is confronted by today.
Therefore however dramatic and powerful many of his ideas might seem the best reading of him is as a kind of inspired literary master, a maker of philosophical fictions, a most brilliant aphoristic stylist, a man of extraordinary intelligence and humor but not a thinker who really can address the questions facing Mankind today for tomorrow.

4 out of 5 stars The Will to Brevity..........2003-07-04

No one can reasonably expect to sum up Nietzche's views and philosophy in under 100 pages. The reader should not go into this work expecting to come out understanding Nietzsche, but maybe make him a little less obscure or receive a slight bit more context in which to read Nietzsche's books. For those who have already read some Nietzsche and are left nonplussed, this tiny book may help you out as well (it did me).

The book follows Nietzsche's publications more or less in chronological order. The longest and most difficult chapter is the one on "The Birth of Tragedy." This work gets the most attention of all of Nietzsche's works, presumably because it is easier to "sum up" or encapsulate than any of his other works. For instance, the section on "The Genealogy of Morals" will leave you wondering what the book is about (in fact, reading the book itself may also have this effect - it's a tad difficult).

"Morality and its Discontents" is one of the most illuminating chapters, and will shed some light on Nietzsche's proclamation that "God is dead" which is probably his most infamous and misunderstood concept (there's also a lot more meat to it than the eternal recurrence and the Ubermensch, which Tanner points out).

Overall I agree with Tanner's assessment of Nietzsche's "Thus Spake Zarathustra." It was the first book of his I read, and I came out of the experience energized, but I had no idea why. "Zarathustra" is a passionate but potentially misleading read. It's nothing like his other works, and introduces concepts that never come up again, though they seem to be of utmost importance in the context of the book (i.e., the eternal recurrence, Ubermensch, and the will to power - at least in his published works).

The pace of Tanner's book quickens and the delineation of Nietzsche's texts becomes more and more sparse towards the final few chapters. There is very little information about Nietzsche's insanity, or Lou Salomé or even the details of his life. The book is almost completely dedicated to Nietzsche's philosophy. In fact, the book ends as abruptly as Nietzsche's own sane life must have. There's a slight feeling of "so what's next?!?" at the end of the last and shortest chapter that discusses the works of 1888 in a flash.

Nietzsche is a huge subject, and his books are thick conceptually if not physically. He was a thinker that wanted to teach us to think differently, which makes him a valuable read no matter what your stance on the views he covers. This minute book will help you peek through the keyhole of this enormous and overwhelming subject.

Lastly, Richard Wagner figures hugely in Nietzsche's work. Knowing more about Wagner will only elucidate some of Nietzsche's works and concepts. Tanner also supports this view.

                Book Description

Here is THE book for sewers who always wanted to sew with leather or suede but were afraid to try. This book includes dozens of tips and techniques for sewing with these comfortable and durable materials on a standard home sewing machine.

Dozens of color photos, detailed illustrations, patterns, and step-by-step instructions guide readers through each project. Easily-sewn projects like belts, ties, vests, purses, and caps are presented first, then readers can try their hand at fancier skirts, tunic vests, pants and jackets. Gorgeous color photos of over 30 of the author's own garments inspire creativity and build confidence.

Starting with a thorough description of special tools and notions that work best for leather, Scrivano masterfully explains the differences between fabric- and leather-sewing techniques. The book then provides readers with a solid grounding in sewing techniques and stitches. Subsequent chapters detail how to plan a leather garment, beginning with design and pattern adjustment and continuing to cutting, sewing, and lining.

A special chapter on embellishment shows readers how to customize garments with finishing touches. Some techniques included are appliqu, unique pocket designs, stenciling, cording and binding, and handmade buttons.

                3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2001-09-26

I ordered this book after my DBIL brought me back some lambskins from Ecuador. Having never worked with leather I had no clue where to start. Sandy's last article in Threads was so inspiring but I was disappointed in the book. The book will be helpful to me as far as the basics go, but samples shown in Threads magazine and online were much better - at least for my taste.

3 out of 5 stars This Book Is Just OK.......2000-10-14

In writing this book, the author took advantage of the fact that there aren't many leather sewing how-to books available.

But despite the lack of good books on this subject, this book is just ok, not great. It's not a must-have book. I am a pretty big fan of Lark Books' craft books (the publisher of this book) but this Leather book is pretty slim. Some of the author's garment examples are bizarre and one-of-a-kind, which I didn't find inspiring.

If you already have any experience at all sewing leather, you don't need this book. However, if you have never sewn leather and want a few basic pointers, basic pointers are within the scope of this book.

5 out of 5 stars Finally! An inspiring and up-to-date book on sewing leather!.......1999-02-06

I love books that inspire me and make me want to create! Lark Books and Sandy Scrivano did just that! Beautiful photography, detailed and practical information, an informational glossary and a generous resource list (it's one thing to create, it's another to find the stuff!). You definitely won't think 60's when reading this book... this is LEATHER WITH ATTITUDE!

In the late 18th century, it was widely thought that to be a sailor was little better than to be a slave. "No man will be a sailor," wrote Samuel Johnson, "who has contrivance enough to get himself into jail. A man in jail has more room, better food, and commonly better company."

If that were true, historian Nathan Miller suggests, then the record of sailing in the age of tall ships would likely be distinguished by few heroes and fewer grand narratives. He counters that in the regular navies of England, the fledgling United States, and most other nations, brutal captains and thuggish crewmen were rare, and professionalism was the order of the day. It was their high standard of service that made those naval forces such powerful, even indispensable arms of the land-based military. Miller's great hero throughout this fine history is Horatio Nelson, whose valor was exemplary throughout countless battles around the world. But he writes with equal admiration of lesser-known figures, such as Lambert Wickes, Pierre de Villeneuve, Juan de Cordova, and "Foul Weather Jack" Byron, who served their nations and fellow sailors well, and often heroically.

3 out of 5 stars Reasonable Popular Survey, but Has a Few Holes Below the Waterline.......2005-07-18

I'll say from the outset that this is a perfectly reasonable survey of a forty-year period of the fighting exploits of the British and American Navies, and as such I'd recommend it as decent armchair reading. However, I knock a couple of stars off in my rating for what, in my view, is a fatal flaw for a book that focusses dually on ship and fleet actions and the strategic contexts of naval combat: there are utterly no diagrams of ship or fleet manuevers, and the few maps at the end are so utterly general and on such a large scale, and without pinpointing the location of a single action, as to make them useless.

There's a certain conceit here by author Miller, who has previously written decent naval histories focussing primarily on the US Navy. He starts out in 1775, so as to capture the battles of the nascent American Navy during the revolution and the instrumental Battle of Chesapeake Bay, which enabled the victory at Yorktown which in turn sealed US independence. But that of course ignores the significant naval actions between the French and British in the Seven Years War and the various continental and colonial conflicts leading up to it. The battles of the US Navy in the Pseudo-War with the French from 1798-1800, with the Barbary states in the 1800s, and with Britain in the War of 1812 take up a half dozen rather short chapters. The bulk of the rest of the book, from the framing prologue up through Trafalgar, is more of a history of the British Navy through the filter of the life of Admiral Horatio Nelson than a true survey of the 'age of fighting sail.' I got the feeling after a while that what Miller really wanted to do was write a biography of Nelson, but couldn't sell the idea, so had to expand it out to cover enough American material to make it more appealing to his usual audience.

To be a true survey, the "starting point" should have gone back to at least the Anglo-Dutch naval wars of the 17th century, or to be an honest assessment of the Napoleonic wars, the American Revolution ought to have been skipped and a little more attention paid to the use of naval support after the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. As it is, Nelson checks in on page 1, checks out on page 300, and the next ten years of warfare are covered in 58 pages. The point of view is squarely in the Anglo and American camps: while some perspectives from the French side and to a much lesser extent that of one of the Dutch fleets are given, that's about it as far as examining the naval actions. This has all the bias of the usual admiring-the-winners history; we expect a little more at this point given the events are 200 years in the past and more scholarship and reflection might've been drawn together in a modern survey.

This is not a scholarly book, in that it has no detailed footnotes and secondary surverys far outnumber the primary sources. But it's not intended to be one, I don't think, and as a popular survey it's better-researched and put together than most similar volumes. As history, while I quibbled with the choice of details here and there (such as glossing over John Paul Jones' time serving on a slaver), it's decent and not uncritical of the men and governments of the age. Some attention is paid to the mechanics of navies and warfare, without distracting from moving from battle to battle. Miller does quite a good job of spending just enough time explaining the overall political and military context of the major fleet actions and individual ship battles.

Nevertheless, the focus on Nelson serves to make it somewhat less interesting than, say, Lambert's "War at Sea in the Age of Sail" (which, I hasten to add, is a slimmer volume but which is amply illustrated with diagrams and maps.) I didn't find Miller's prose particularly gripping, but neither was it distracting. Because he feels it necessary to cover the most exciting bits of history from the era, the chapters don't really flow from one the next, but have the feel of isolated episodes occasionally wrapped up by the "strategy" chapters. For instance, the career of Admiral Thomas Cochrane, the swashbuckling model for Jack Aubrey and Horatio Hornblower by varying degrees, is inserted between chapters on the "big picture" battles; it could've appeared at random nearly anywhere in the book and read just the same. It's as if Miller was at the point in writing this out that he said, "well, Nelson's dead now, now I'll go to the next most compelling figure of the age." In fact, I'd go so far as to say that aside from where Nelson appears, the rest of the book reads more like a series of magazine articles than a cohesive book. Not that there's anything wrong with that if that's what you're looking for.

So in the end I enjoyed reading it simply because it was zippy and got from swash to buckle quickly with a detour to the situation room to explain it all from time to time, but I can't say as I feel likely to bother to re-read it in future years. So take this for what it's worth: a mildly warm recommendation for some armchair reading, but one which will probably leave the enthusiast for naval history in the age of fighting sail wanting more details in other volumes.

That said: I just can't get over the lack of diagrams and real maps in this book. What on earth were the editors and author thinking?!?

3 out of 5 stars Good history, mediocre writing.......2003-02-17

3 out of 5 stars A good book, with some weird flaws.......2002-09-10

Nathan Miller is one of those authors who is immediately believable as an historian due to the detail and care with which he writes his books. At the same time, his books are emminently readable because he cuts through to the heart of the matter and has a concise, exciting style. This book is a nice addition to my naval library, and I anticipate referring to it often.

The writing style is definitely the highlight of the book, although there are other items to recommend it. First is the inclusion of a number of lesser-known naval battles that are often omitted. Everyone does Trafalgar and the Nile, but few general histories include the U.S.'s war with Tripoli or pre-Nelsonian battles in the Napoleonic Wars (because most were inconclusive). Because of the short time frame of the book - a mere 40 years - these lesser-known actions are covered. At the same time, this book does not read as a catalogue of battles, but a smooth narrative in which these battles naturally occur. Additionally, there is enough detail about the background story (land battles, politics, etc.) that each battle is firmly placed in context. Finally, the personalities of the men (and even some women) that did the fighting comes through, not just the admirals but occasionally the ordinary crewmembers as well.

Unfortunately, there are some problems with the book, starting with the time frame. The first few chapters, detailing the Continental Navy and the American Revolution, are not good. They seem tacked on (possibly to sell more books in the U.S.?), and do not have the same flow as subsequent chapters. It should have started later (perhaps the French revolution?), or a lot earlier (although then it would be a different book). Secondly, Miller has a grating habit of rooting for one side - either the U.S. or Britain, as the case may be. Since history is written by the victor, there is a natural pro-British bias in the details of Napoleonic naval battles, for example, but Miller's style gives the appearance that he's rooting for the British at the same time. An example: "The British and French ships had the same number of cannon, but fortunately the British had better training." This is only "fortunate" if you were on the British ship! This kind of insidious cheerleading is especially bad at the beginning of the book, in the aforementioned "tacked-on" chapters, where the pro-U.S. bias is very irritating.

Therefore, I recommend this book as a detailed and very readable account of the Napoleonic (and conincident) Wars, as long as you can get through the less well-written early chapters.

                5 out of 5 stars I was born 200 years too late.......2002-03-05

and if I was born in 1759, would I have joined the Royal Navy? Probably, yes. I loved the book. Nathan Miller's excellent research is inspiring. He covers the period from
the American Revolution to the War of 1812 in a fast, concise, manner. I learned things about John Paul Jones that weren't mentioned in JOHN PAUL JONES, FIGHTING
SAILOR. Any Hornblower and Aubrey-Maturin fans here?
Thomas Lord Cochrane was the inspiration for both Hornblower and Jack Aubrey. Sir Edward Pellew, a captain in the Royal Navy during the Wars of the French Revolution, and the Napoleonic Wars, is mentioned in the Hornblower
books. It mentions the Barbary Pirates too and the George
                Washington Incident.

4 out of 5 stars This book ROCKS! like the discovery channel in depth times 5.......2002-01-10

I love this book. Quick read and a bit dry with assumptions that Americans know the relevant names scattered within the book. Many interesting facts and detailed layout of the battles that shaped the caribbean and the americas.

                    Book Description

Although V. Gordon Childe died 36 years ago, he remains the world's most renowned prehistorian. His What Happened in History, first published in 1942, is probably the most widely read book ever written by an archaeologist. His influence and reputation endure despite the fact that many of the theoretical ideas he propounded, as well as his interpretations of European and West Asian prehistory, have been profoundly modified, or even rejected, since his death.

With contributions from such distinguished prehistorians as Kent V. Flannery, David Harris, Leo S. Klejn, John Mulvaney, Colin Renfrew, Michael Rowlands, and Bruce Trigger, The Archaeology of V. Gordon Childe is an attempt to evaluate Childe's achievement from different "partly national" perspectives and to assess how far, and why, his work remains significant today. The contributors examine such persistent themes in Childe's thought as the nature of culture and the role of diffusion in cultural evolution and debate the question of whether Childe anticipated "processual archaeology" in his famous models of the Neolithic and Urban Revolutions. Also included are evaluations of Childe's early career in Australia, his relations with Soviet archaeology, including a previously unknown letter from Childe to Soviet archaeologists, and his impact on American archaeology.

This book contains papers presented at the V. Gordon Childe Centennial Conference held at the Institute of Archaeology in 1992. While the book does deal with Childe's theoritical archaeology, it also addresses his early life before embarking in archaeology.

Contributors to this volume are Bruce Trigger, Michael Rowlands, John Mulvaney, Leo Klejn, Kent Flannery, and Colin Renfrew. Trigger's and Renfrew's essays are forceful pieces on why archaeologists should stilll read Childe today. They also strip away the myth of him just being a 'Marxist' archaeologist; their essays demonstrate his theoritical contributions are much richer than that. Flannery takes a much more aggressive tone and is critical of Childe for his lack of interest in the New World and critical of his theories and models. Attacks like these should best be launched while the author is alive in my opinion. The essay by Mulvaney looks at Childe's life before archaeology, and Klejn's essay deals with a letter from Childe to Institute of Archaeology in St. Petersburg.

The target audience of this book is not clear though. While centered on Childe, these essays present a variety of facets concerning his life and works. Overall, its enjoyable and intellectually stimulating reading.

From the supplier: Harvard University's Earth and Planetary Sciences Department uses SPARCstations from Sun Microsystems Inc in a client/server configuration to provide the calculating power and graphics capabilities needed to simulate plate tectonics and the Earth's convection. The workstations offer fast 3D modeling capabilities and compute-intensive power that were previously only available via larger, more costly computers. The department's workstation network, running on an Ethernet backbone, allows researchers to access outside research data. Sun's distributed computing implementation lets researchers assign various project tasks to several workstations, resulting in significant enhancements in time spent working on projects. The department uses one SPARCstation SLC, three SPARCstation IPX workstations and four SPARCstation 2s. The network consists of one SPARCserver 460 fileserver and two SPARCserver 670MPs.
