Book Description

How do you maximize living space in increasingly small and expensive apartments that are being built in cities around the country? This stunningly illustrated book reveals how renowned architects -- including Stephen Alton, SA Architects, David Hotson Architects, and Gary Schoemaker Architects -- have solved that problem in their designs for small apartments and lofts in New York, San Fransisco, Boston, and other major US cities where residential square footage is at a premium.

These design solutions focus on innovative, multifunctional uses within small spaces: a dining area by night, an office by day; living rooms that morph into party spaces or media rooms; and free-standing closets that conceal everything from kitchens, to beds, to work stations. The projects exhibit excellence in design, along with innovative use of materials and construction methods. Each case study includes interior and exterior photography by some of the finest architectural photographers working today, accompanied by design drawings that include site plans, details, and floor plans.

2 out of 5 stars Small apartments?.......2007-09-22

Although there are some interesting architectural and design ideas in this book, the apartments aren't small by any stretch of the imagination. All of the design is modern, as well--not enough variety to really provide inspiration.

If you're looking for a book on this topic, try "Living Large in Small Spaces," by Marisa Bartolucci. One look through that book, and I was able to brainstorm a solution for my living room that also has triple duty as a dining room and bedroom for my daughter when she's home from college.

5 out of 5 stars James Grayson Trulove is my design hero.......2007-04-05

This author consistently turns out high-quality books, often related to small-space living. His narrative is very well done as well as the photography: goes beyond pretty pictures (although they are fine too). Mr. Trulove, if you are reading this, keep up the good work!

    5 out of 5 stars A well researched book.......2006-10-05

This is the third book I purchased with this author's name. As the two other books it appears to be extensively researched and knowledgeably written. It contains a large array of beautiful art work in watercolor, oil, and pastel. As of this date I found this to be the best on this subject; I was so impressed with the quality of the book that I purchased three more from the Elements of Painting Series.

How did Margaret Bourke-White become the top photographer for Fortune and Life, a globetrotting adventuress who held court in the most glamorous studio on earth--a Chrysler Building penthouse patrolled by alligators, adjacent to the fierce gargoyle she made famous? By first muscling in as a master of the masculine art of corporate photography. For the first time, that early work has gotten its due in Stephen Bennett Phillips' Margaret Bourke-White: The Photography of Design 1927-36. In insightful prose and glossily reproduced black-and-white photos, he opens our eyes to her fast-developing genius. Her 1927 photos of Cleveland's Terminal Tower expertly aped the fuzzy, romantic pictorialism of early Edward Steichen, but her 1928 shot of the same building through the spiral grillwork shows her rigorous sense of composition. After she discovered magnesium lighting, her pictures of what could've been ordinary industrial scenes acquired stunning star power. Rows of tin soup cans, aluminum rods, hogs hanging in a stockyard, Moscow ballet dancers, Wurlitzer organ pipes: she transformed them all into patterns bespeaking brute power. Her camera was a magic device that transformed everything she saw into a shiny Deco masterpiece. This book is as smart and beautiful as its stellar subject. --Tim Appelo

      Book Description

Margaret Bourke-White is best known as the first staff photographer of Fortune magazine, the first female war correspondent, and the woman whose photographs made the covers of Life magazine famous. But before she began traveling throughout the world to document history in the making, Bourke-White was creating evocative abstract photographs of American industry and architecture. Margaret Bourke-White: Photography of Design, 1927-1936 examines for the first time the works produced during this preeminent photographer's critical early years.

It was in a photography class as a freshman at Columbia University that Bourke-White was first exposed to the work of Arthur Wesley Dow and the abstract style that quickly came to characterize her own work. Upon moving to Cleveland in 1927, Bourke-White began creating abstract photographs of the city's industrial architecture, an unusual subject for a female photographer at that time. The world of machines and technology was a familiar one for Bourke-White, however, whose father was an engineer and inventor. And the monumental forms, geometric shapes, and cold steel of industrial plants and their machines lent themselves perfectly to the abstract style Bourke-White had already developed in her work.

The resulting sparse, yet powerful compositions of American industry rivaled the similarly-themed paintings of Precisionist artists Charles Sheeler and Charles Demuth, and quickly pushed Bourke-White's work to the forefront of American abstraction. It was on the basis of these early photographs, icons of American strength and steadfastness in uncertain times, that Henry Luce offered Bourke-White a job shooting images for the pages of Fortune. When he launched Life magazine in 1936, Bourke-White's photograph of the Fort Peck Dam in Montana graced the first cover.

Margaret Bourke-White: Photography of Design, 1927-1936 is a groundbreaking volume, an exploration of the first decade of the career of a remarkable photographer. An essay by Stephen Bennett Phillips chronicles these years and interprets the work produced, much of which has never before been published. This book is the companion to the nationwide traveling exhibition of the same name, organized by The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C.

          Book Description

It was a contest of titans: John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, two heroes of the Revolutionary era, once intimate friends, now icy antagonists locked in a fierce battle for the future of the United States. The election of 1800 was a thunderous clash of a campaign that climaxed in a deadlock in the Electoral College and led to a crisis in which the young republic teetered on the edge of collapse. Adams vs. Jefferson is the gripping account of a turning point in American history, a dramatic struggle between two parties with profoundly different visions of how the nation should be governed. The Federalists, led by Adams, were conservatives who favored a strong central government. The Republicans, led by Jefferson, were more egalitarian and believed that the Federalists had betrayed the Revolution of 1776 and were backsliding toward monarchy. The campaign itself was a barroom brawl every bit as ruthless as any modern contest, with mud-slinging, scare tactics, and backstabbing. The low point came when Alexander Hamilton printed a devastating attack on Adams, the head of his own party, in "fifty-four pages of unremitting vilification." The stalemate in the Electoral College dragged on through dozens of ballots. Tensions ran so high that the Republicans threatened civil war if the Federalists denied Jefferson the presidency. Finally a secret deal that changed a single vote gave Jefferson the White House. A devastated Adams left Washington before dawn on Inauguration Day, too embittered even to shake his rival's hand. With magisterial command, Ferling brings to life both the outsize personalities and the hotly contested political questions at stake. He shows not just why this moment was a milestone in U.S. history, but how strongly the issues--and the passions--of 1800 resonate with our own time.

          Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Well rounded work.......2007-08-01

I picked this up at a discount book store to brush up on my early American history. As I read it, I was surprised I had never heard of Ferling before now. He is concise and well written. His insight into the election illustrates the complexities of our electoral process showing it not to be perfect, but better than most in the world. I have a new sense of respect for Adams now, before I was not too fond of him. I am a big fan of Hamilton, who is portrayed in a negative manner at times. In retrospect it was accurate as Hamilton, like all other politicians then and now were/are opportunists. I look forward to more Ferling works and am glad I found this piece.

5 out of 5 stars A great read on the most contentious of all elections, replete with radically differing idealogies.......2007-05-20

Adams vs. Jefferson: The Tumultuous Election of 1800 is a wonderful addition to the Pivotal Moments in American History being published by the Oxford University Press. John Ferling does a superb job, in fairly short order, bringing the reader into the time when our nation was in its nascent stages - prior to political parties dominating the electoral landscape. He describes robustly and vividly the radically differing ideas between the Federalists and Anti Federalists (Republicans). The book traces the ideological roots of the struggle between those favoring a strong central government and those favoring a much loser confederation of states.

Both Adams and Jefferson are treated fairly and evenly by Ferling. Their growing differences and eventual break are covered well. This work clearly demonstrates that the American Revolution didn't end at Yorktown but, rather, continued as a political struggle through a clash of ideologies both in the press and on the ballot. Interestingly, it also shows the ugliness of current American politics is far from new. Some of the vitriol written then about the leaders of the time is alone worth the read.

The rather quick decline of the paternal and elitist Federalist Era is a topic that other authors seem to have trouble limiting their pages on. Ferling, while fairly thorough, is quick in his analysis. He traces the political struggle that led to the demise of Federalism in the contentious and pivotal election of 1800 back to and including the Revolution itself.

Ferling's writing is direct and highly engaging. "Unlike Adams, Jefferson had never wavered in his belief that the American Revolution had been a glorious success. The `flames kindled on the 4th of July 1776 have spread over too much of the globe to be extinguished by the feeble engines of despotism,' he remarked in 1821, adding that the `light and liberty are on a steady advance". In his final letter, written in 1826, Jefferson reiterated his belief that the American Revolution had been, and would continue to be, `the signal arousing men to burst the chains' that bound them and to secure the `blessings and security of self-government'".

This is one terrific book on a very interesting period in American history. I can't imagine anyone with any appreciation of our history not greatly enjoying it.

          4 out of 5 stars ELECTION BATTLES.......2007-02-20

I liked this book. It is about friends who are running against each other becoming bitter enemies. It is one of the earliest mud slinging books about election battles and dirty politics about the election of 1800. My sister gave me this book as a Christmas Gift in 2005 and enjoyed reading about election tactics, and tis book is a must for history buffs. I rate this book 4.5 to 4.75 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Great addition to a wonderful series.......2007-01-02

This is one of the best displays of political history in a long time. The tactics of the Federalists and the Jeffersonian are well presented here in the election that showed American democracy was a reality. The author does a wonderful job of weaving together the complex issues that were involved. For those who feel today's campaigns are filled with personal attacks they have nothing on 1800. The book is very well written and is an excellent addition to a great series. This book serves as a summary for the lives of Adams and Jefferson as well as looking at the development of political parties in the United States. There is some consideration thrown on to Hamilton although a little more would have solidified the arguments. Despite that this is a great book to start with or if you are an expert in this area it is one you will enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Humanizes legends, an excellent read.......2006-12-11

Ferling has captured one of the pivotal moments in American history, the first peaceful transfer of power from one "party' to another. The individuals who are key players: Adams, Jefferson, Hamilton, Burr, etc. have passed into myth and legend in the popular mind. Ferling presents a real picture, which includes both the virtues and faults of the various characters. As a few other reviewers have pointed out, Hamilton gets hammered a bit, but evidence suggests that this was not entirely undeserved. Of course, history buffs will long for more in-depth analysis of other characters in the drama, as well as the actual mechanics of the governmental procedures in place at the time. Such was not the goal of the work. The goal was to describe the behavior of the most key individuals involved and the implications of the outcomes for future events. What I always find interesting in such works is just how easily events could have gone a different way, with predictably dramatic consequences for our current ways of life and thinking. In this, the book achieves the aim admirably.

                    Product Description

Natalie loves love. Fairy tale endings; rose petals on the bed; a ring at the bottom of a champagne flute: the mythological promises of love that women like Nat come to expect, to want and miss. It's an idea that has gestated for most of Nat's thirty-five years. But having never been surprised with a thousand daisies on her front door, or a proposal written among the clouds, Nat clings to the hope for love, the Possibility. It's this lure of Possibility that inspires her to drive nearly 2,000 miles to surprise her high school sweetheart. She starts out with a singular vision of what love is: What it looks like, tastes like, acts like -- what it simply must be. But her meticulously planned itinerary is almost immediately thrown off course by a collection of gender-bending characters (and experiences) that continually contradict, challenge, and compromise Nat's firm grasp of What Love Is. Through confessions of others, pasts revealed, and epiphanies about herself, Nat's belief system, her picture of the prize is completely deconstructed, leaving in its wake the terrible realization that Love, as she has believed it should be, is nothing more than a figment of her own imagination; just another Big Girl Lie; as tangible as the image of the Blessed Virgin on a garage door somewhere out in the Valley. "She's the Girl" is a funny tale of a woman who learns the hard way that love is never what it appears to be.

                    5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary novel!.......2004-10-16

Natalie, we are told on the back cover of SHE'S THE GIRL, loves love. But the reader quickly learns that Natalie loves more than just love: she loves life, which appears to come at her at truly dizzying speeds. Natalie's road trip starts out in the tamest of ways: a quest to find True Happiness With An Old Boyfriend (who hasn't been down that road, be honest!); and I have to admit that I was initially a trifle disappointed in her motive and quest. However, it is quickly apparent that Natalie herself has no idea what she really wants, and her journey allows her to sample from a veritable smorgasbord of ideas, lifestyles, relationships, and emotions. Some might say that she grows up -- but what I see is her growing *into* herself, into the person that she is in the act of becoming. And there's nothing more fascinating than that to observe.
Brooks' style is no less eccentric -- and captivating -- than the evolution of her protagonist. Her sentence structure frequently (and one has to think intentionally) ignored the rules of style as her words appear to tumble over each other in their eagerness to be read.
A thoroughly wonderful book, SHE'S THE GIRL will both comfort and provoke. I cannot recommend it enough.

5 out of 5 stars A unique journey of personal growth and truth.......2004-06-08

She's The Girl is one of the most enjoyable adventure novels I've read in a long time. It is also an emotional journey from start to finish that will leave you wanting more. I was drawn in from the first page and had a hard time stopping so I could go on about my day. The style of author Susan M. Brooks is prolific, realistic, whimsical and a no nonsense approach that speaks volumes to anyone considering how love affects them.

This story is infectious and smart. We are introduced to some dynamic characters, offering their own life story and experiences along the way. These inhabitants could be your friends and neighbors or the people you only dream of getting to being acquainted with. The journal-like novel follows our main character Nat on her travel to North Dakota in hopes of marrying the man she has dubbed as her soul mate. Along the way she comes in contact with some of the most eccentric people she's ever known, who in turn draw her into their unique yet complex lives. We first meet Trina, a carefree wild child hitching a ride in the rain to marry a convict. As the pages turn we learn of attention-seeker Madeline, Mexican Bob, and Ivy an older woman with her own ideals of love and how it fits into our lives. Everyone has quite a tale to tell.

She's the Girl isn't your typical love theme by any means, but instead gives us insight into one learning about themselves and gathering a wealth of knowledge about the one subject that eludes us all; love. Through Nat we learn there are no right or wrong answers in love, and sometimes it's the illusion that gets in the way of reality.

I appreciated the author's ability to bring the reader in and create so much compassion for the characters. Here is a story that is genuine, down to earth, quirky, and filled with more emotional prose than one could imagine. It's real, raw, and will make you laugh out loud. It's a book that will be talked about and remembered for its sheer honesty and a drive that will surpass time. There is so much more here than meets the eye. I tried to put it down and but found it difficult to not find out what was going to happen next. Read and enjoy and look forward to more from such a talented writer.

5 out of 5 stars You'll be glad you read it........2004-05-22

What a great book. Terribly stimulating and funny. It keeps you hooked from page one. I swear I was there riding in the car. Susan M. Brooks can write. She has an easy flowing style, not like many I've read in a long time. She keeps you captivated. 292 pages and I was done in 3 days. Working days! I didn't want to put it down. You want to know what's going to happen next. Parts of the book brought back memories of schoolhood that I had forgotten about. You'll laugh out loud and maybe even cry a little bit. Remember the "fresh girls"? You will!!
I recommend this book and look forward to reading more of Susan M. Brooks.

                    5 out of 5 stars A funny, moving story........2004-03-01

She's the Girl is a quick moving road trip with delightful characters and unforeseen twists that really kept my attention. The scenes are depicted vividly with such clarity, I felt as if I was with the characters in the moment. Brooks has a colorful sense of humor along with subtle wit that helped lead me to see the deeper more complex side of how a young woman sees love. I was hooked on the story from the first chapter. I believe each reader can relate to some aspect of his/her real life experience with that of a character in She's the Girl. I applaud Brooks for her unique, descriptive style and thank her for sharing it in She's the Girl.

5 out of 5 stars you must read this!.......2004-03-01

There are not many books that can draw me in so much, that I end up reading the entire book in one day. This book however, did just that-I became so enamored with the story, that I needed to find out what Natalie was going to do next, what character she would run into, and more importantly, how the story would end.

What I love about this book so much, is that I'm able to see everything that Brooks describes. It becomes so real, as if I'm apart of the story, eavesdropping on a conversation between Nat and Trina. "She's the Girl" is a book that I know will not be sitting on my bookshelf, never being touched again. It's a book that I'm going to read again and again and still like it as much as I did reading it for the first time.

Everyone has had their experiences in life, realizing that it's not at all what they had planned it to be--not finding a sports car in your driveway with a big bow on it for your sixteenth birthday, that your twenties will never turn out to be like an episode of "Friends", and having that perfect man you have fantasized about for about ten years is just that, a fantasy. Life is full of unexpectations and "She's the Girl" is a book that captures that rule so well.

I disagree with the former re-viewer in that this analysis theory HAS always applied to the here and now. Bolger clearly shows this through case study repeatedly, even without being insubordinate nor being tact-less towards anyone, regardless of rank. The old "He who forgets history is condemned to repeat it!" applies. I can re-call enough history that Bolger revealed through fore-shadowing that kept me interested. If he is retired, then it is our loss. Bolger should be General rank and no less; I would be proud to serve under him and I hope he still can serve our country well.Bolger would serve greatly in Iraq, for he surely shows his knowledge in this book.

5 out of 5 stars excellent continuation of Violent Peace.......1999-09-13

Having read Violent Peace, Savage Peace thankfully delved into the post-Cold War world and how we use or should use US troops as peacekeepers. I particularly enjoyed Bolger's treatment of the Sinai and he quite correctly emphasizes that this is a mission that has worked and justifiably so. Bolger deftly mixes narration with bold truths, especially about Amb. Hunt. In is itself I hope Americans can see after reading Savage Peace how deeply ingrained shortsighted selfish isolationism is in the American psyche. The only shortfall of this book is the lack of history of NEOs (non-combatant evacuation) and their applicability in our world. Even at the time the book was written there was much he could have used on this still vital subject. We've seen NEOs and embassy evacuations in Sierra Leone, Uganda, Siagon, Liberia, Somalia and others it has always (see China 1920's-30's) and will be a joint military mission as well as something that must be coordinated at the highest civilian/political level. I don't think I can overstate the vital role the US military plays here. As "State" magazine (publication of the US State Dept.) once wrote (I paraphrase) The true power of the United States does not rest on the number of guns afloat or in the air, or the soldier's behind it, but in her ability to protect her citizens abroad when they are in need.

                      Book Description

Whether they involved goods, words, or ideas, acts of giving and trading were fundamental in early Indian-white contacts. But how did these transactions function across the two cultures, and what did they mean to each? In this book, David Murray explores a range of early exchanges between Europeans and Indians, showing how they operated within a set of interlocking economies-linguistic, religious, as well as material.

Murray begins by examining the crucial role of gift-giving. Like the double function of the key, which both locks and unlocks, the gift-with its simultaneous action of offering something and demanding a return-expressed the paradoxical nature of early Indian-white encounters. Because the power to give was associated with ideas of sovereignty, both sides often preferred to represent exchanges as gift-giving rather than trading or selling.

To illustrate the complexities of these cross-cultural transactions, the author looks closely at the work of linguist, trader, and missionary Roger Williams, whose A Key into the Language of America at once serves the purposes of translation, conversion, and trade. Murray also examines the changing meaning and representation of wampum, the quintessential medium of exchange in the early colonial period, as well as the multiple processes of conversion taking place as Christian ideas were incorporated into Indian cultures.

According to the author, only by recognizing the ways in which objects and ideas circulated and took on value in interrelated economies can we understand the contested "middle ground" between Europeans and Indians of the colonial Northeast.

                        Book Description

Understanding the nature and role of endothelium-derived hyperpolarizing factor appears to be crucial in the quest for improved treatments for hypertension, diabetes, ischemia-reperfusion and other vascular disorders. EDHF 2000 comprises the proceedings of the Third International Symposium on endothelium-dependent hyperpolarizations. The first two meetings established a role for EDHF and other chemical factors involved in endothelium-dependent hyperpolarizations. These proceedings focus upon the role of gap junctions in cardiovascular responses and investigate the chemical identity of EDHF. Additional chapters on Physiology, Hormonal Modulation and Pathological Changes are also included. EDHF 2000 will be of interest not only to physiologists and pharmacologists puzzled by the complexity of the interactions between the endothelium and underlying vascular smooth muscle cells, but also clinical researchers and physicians treating patients with cardiovascular diseases.
