imaginary photographs of unbuilt buildings.......2001-01-08
So I'm looking through this book of photographs of unbuilt projects, and gradually I realize. . . I'm looking at photo. . . . graphs of. . . unbuilt projects. They're great-looking photos, too. There's a building at the Salk Institute in La Jolla which I know isn't there, and another Jewish memorial NYC which I don't think exists, and they look great.
What Kent Larson has done is a simple, powerful, cool idea that took a lot of time, energy, MIT architectural thinking, and SGI computing power to accomplish. Larson first pieced together a reasonable paper version of each structure, then assembled a 3-D virtual model of that structure, then had to choose the best virtual camera angles under the best false sunlight for the best portraits. Larson went as far as using high-resolution photographs of existing Kahn walls to skin these virtual surfaces, and added a patina of wear and tear, just to make it more convincing.
So Larson's work is the result of a lot of a helluva lot of choices. It helped the interpretation that Kahn preferred a limited palette of building materials - like concrete - which helped Larson orchestrate this score. It didn't help Larson that Kahn was known for his close attention to lighting effects. All that lighting took the most sophisticated possible CAD/CAM rendering on SGI hardware.
But the payoff is - shocking. You get bright sunlight, soft counter-reflections, complex reflections in glass (the glass-block Jewish memorial is the showboat piece in that respect). You have to see them to know how much you want to believe them, if that makes any sense. To know how much you'd like to visit these six new Kahn buildings that will never exist. In a weird way, this project advances Kahn's career and reputation, not only from beyond the grave, but lapsing over into architectural cyberspace.
Architecture & computer at it's best .............2000-12-15
Larson has not only demonstrated superb skill in computer rendering but also a much deeper understanding of Kahn's architecture. Reviews by Scully demonstrate the histrorical development of Kahns work & Mitchell has done a fine job of giving the analysis. This book will help in establishing some standard for presenting unbuilt works of architecture in the future.
Format of the book is good in its simplicity although some reference to drawings would have made it a more comprehensive study. Great book ... a collecter's item for all "Kahnian's" across the world.
Beautiful Book!.......2000-11-20
This is not just another architecture book. It is also a beautiful photography book. It is astounding that these luminous images are of spaces that were never built!
Extraordinary.......2000-11-19
I have known the eight projects presented in this book for over thirty years, but now realize that my understanding was only superficial. This extraordinary volume reveals aspects of the buildings impossible to perceive from drawings and models: the layering of space, the rich materiality, and - most of all -Kahn's genius for manipulating light. Delightfully, this ambitious and unorthodox study is sure to rattle those who regard Kahn as an unapproachable icon.
Presumptuous.......2000-11-17
Kent larson presumes he can show a finished Kahn using a computer. As we all know, the building process is evolving. It certainly was for Kahn. Larson's leaden computer graphics shed not even the glimmer of a candle on the genius of Kahn.

Icons Of Photography: The 20th Century
ASIN: 3791327712 |
Book Description
This newest addition to the "Icons" series examines the enduring legacy of photography's pioneers in beautifully reproduced full-page images and lively, knowledgeable texts offering critical and biographical information on the artists profiled.
Although photography is largely considered a twentieth (and now twenty-first-) century art form, its inception in the nineteenth century ignited an artistic and scientific frenzy as discovery after discovery moved the art forward at lightning speed. Technical advances, such as heliographs, daguerreotypes, calotypes and tintypes, albumen, collodion, and platinum prints were all introduced before 1900 by artists whose names are still revered today. From Daguerre and Niepce's early experiments with the camera obscura to Atget's studies of the urban environment; from Roger Fenton's documentation of the Crimean War to Mathew Brady's realistic portrayals of America's Civil War; from Muybridge's galloping horses to Julia Margaret Cameron's romantic portraits; from Felix Nadar's infamous female nude to Lewis Carroll's celebrated portraits of girlshere are the geniuses and masterpieces who helped transform a scientific discovery into a means of artistic expression.

ASIN: 1560973404 |
Book Description
The creator of Li'l Abner goes under the microscope in this handsome monograph.
The National Book Award-nominated author of Darconville's Cat and Three Wogs delivers this slender-yet-rich monograph on the controversial life of cartoonist Al Capp, creator of Li'l Abner. "The left eventually broke his heart," wrote John Updike of Capp. A genuine American mythmaker and celebrated funnyman, Capp used his strip for years to expose greed, corruption and social injustice, while bringing belly laughs and dramatic suspense to the lives of millions of people every day.
Theroux, however, dives head-first into the often glossed-over side of Capp, delivering a keen (but not without compassion) analysis of Capp's degeneration into a bitter, disillusioned, conservative extremist, who began using his strip in later years to attack the very causes he once championed. This is a rich and compelling investigation into the psyche of a paradoxical American icon, who at the height of his fame was one of America's highest-paid and most well-known entertainers, gracing the cover of Time and other magazines, and franchising Li'l Abner into film, theater, radio, merchandising and more. Illustrated throughout with examples of Capp's cartoons.

hatchet job.......2000-04-05
This book is filled with inaccuracies. Further, it does not attempt to explain what it purports to: his "enigma." One example: the picture on the original cover (Capp with a woman) is never credited or captioned.
It was worth the money........1999-11-17
Very well written, compassionate and informative. A hell of alife. Not all cookies and cream. He had the money but no happinessexcept the strip. The accident and the leg drew a black shroud over the rest of his life.
Al Capp: American Icon?.......1999-04-15
Al Capp was the creator of "Li'l Abner", which in my opinion was the greatest comic strip ever. Capp was a very complicated man, and this book does a credible job of telling his life story. Much of this information was already know to me, however. For Capp fans only.

Parentcraft and Parent Education.......2003-10-26
Parentcraft is a clear, practical and supportive guide for everyone involved in parenting. As well as to parents themselves, I highly recommend it to those in jobs that involve caring for children, such as residential care staff and foster carers. It also provides excellent material for those who work in parent education. I work in training social care staff and I have received a range of very positive comments on how helpful people have found it in their work with parents. I think its a must for professional staff working with children and families.

Book Description
Fake Warriors lays bare a national scandal: the shocking story of countless men of the Vietnam War era who falsify their military service. Their motives vary - from seeking unearned glory at the expense of authentic heroes, to more tangible benefits like defrauding the V.A. and stealing money from impressionable women. This book will enable every patriotic American who appreciates the contributions of those who serve their country honorably to identify and expose fake warriors in their midst - as well as to help bring about their long overdue punishment.
Customer Reviews:
Incompetent .......2007-05-23
I wouldn't take anything these two write at face value, even if they were writing their own names.
They have proven themselves incompetent in reading simple military documents and too lazy to obtain original-source information in analyzing those documents, most notably in their ludicrous claims about John Kerry's Silver Star citations. Not only did the Navy Inspector General's office put the matter to rest in its investigation and report, numerous journalists - including Rowan Scarborough of the conservative Washington Times - exercised basic research skills in settling the question.
Evidently Mark and Erika didn't even bother to read other people's research before making total fools of themselves. Let it stand as a monument to their intellectual laziness.
The Fraud's Dilemma.......2007-03-25
As an Army veteran, I run into a lot of "fake warriors," usually panhandlers here in San Antonio, under highway bridges, holding those ubiquitous "Homeless Vietnam Vet" or "Desert Storm Vet Looking for Work" signs.
It takes about 30 seconds of questioning them to find out that every one of them (except one truly untunate guy) is a phoney. How they get away with it was a mystery to me, because it ain't for nothin' that San Antonio is "Military City U.S.A.": There are three Air Force bases, an Army post and two training grounds, a MEPS, and numerous Air Force, Army, Marine and Navy Reserve Centers and National Guard armories, and even a Coast Guard Auxiliary flotilla here!
But, not everybody has served in the military, so to the average civilian it's hard to detect who's the real McCoy and who's just another Eddie Bracken. And, most "fake warriors" are angling for much more than pocket change: The seemingly endless parade of spurious Medal of Honor, Bronze Star, Navy Cross, and Purple Heart recipients, Army Rangers, Green Berets (Special Forces), Navy Seals, Seabees, CIA black ops, and gung-ho Marines better beware if more people get this book and get wise to their scams! There are millions of dollars of VA benefits, and well as social esteem, and unearned gratitude these guys (and a few gals) have wrongfully pried out of an unwitting public. But far worse, are the hearts that have been broken, of lovers, spouses and families whose emotions have been manipulated by these charlatans.
Here's the dilemma, though: This book documents, step-by-step, contact-by-contact, and website-by-website, how to detect, expose and bring these clowns to justice. Yet, anyone who wants to perpetrate the fraud of imaginary heroism, reading this book, would be able to come up with an almost airtight military hero's record just by "reverse engineering" their "accomplishments" to elude the traps laid out by this book.
But (to solve our paradox), here's the proof in the pudding: This book is so thorough that, put head to head, the phony hero would STILL be unable to pull the wool over the eyes of anyone who's carefully read and applied the lessons of this thoroughly researched and written book.
Hank and Erika Holzer have penned the coin of the realm for spotting the counterfeit Audie Murphys at large. "Fake Warriors" is worth its weight in Silver Stars as a tool for exposing and shaming more dishonest people than you'd have ever imagined are desecrating the memories of America's real war heroes.
Fake hero's.......2007-01-18
I have read "Stolen Valor" and loved it. I am a Vietnam veteran and I was so tired of all the 'wannabee's' that now say they were over there, but never were, I had to find out if some of them really were. Although "Stolen Valor" was informative, this book "Fake Warriors" helped me out the first few hours I read it. It exposed a fake who claimed to be a Navy Seal and was not. I went right to a website that led me to a man who had a list of every single Navy Seal that ever existed. I called him up and we spoke for 1/2 hour. My guy was nowhere to be found. This book is much more informative on exactly HOW to determine a fake and easily prove it. Very informative reading and I highly recommend it even to a casually interested student of the art of military fakery.
Best on the Market.......2005-12-17
There are several books on the market dealing with military frauds and phonies. Holzer's book takes you through the hype, the fact finding, the process to expose and nail those that steal the honor and integrity of our Vetearns for personal gain. It is THE BEST and most accurate "self-help" book available on the issue. It follows the Holzer book, Aid and Comfort - the story of the way Jane Fonda SHOULD have been tried for treason. Any book written by Hank or Erika Holzer is nothing but the most accurately researched, thought provoking material out there!

Book Description
We are now accustomed to conceive of science as an instrumental activity, producing numbers, measurements and graphs by means of sophisticated devices. This book investigates the historical process that gave rise to this instrumental culture. The contributors trace the displacement of instruments across the globe, the spread of practices or precision and the circulation and appropriation of skills and knowledge.
Through comparative and contextual approaches, the volume confronts the tension between the local and the global, examining the process of the universalization of science. Bringing together case studies ranging from the seventeenth to the twentieth centuries, contributors discuss French, German and British initiatives, as well as the knowledge and techniques of travelers in countries such as India, Africa, South East Asia and the Americas.
Students and researchers interested in the history of science in both Western and non-Western cultures will find this book a valuable and thought-provoking read.
Customer Reviews:
Best read as individual chapters.......2004-09-22
The authors make nice but grand claims about the development of instruments for science, worldwide. The book describes several cases that can be read as fascinating and important historical episodes. Like the development of accurate clocks, that could be used by travellers, especially on ships.
But I found these chapters to be rather standalone. Certainly, overall they describe the onward march of science, enabled greatly by the instruments that are the true heroes of the chapters. And they are quite well researched and written. The authors are very capable in this regard.
The problem is in the attempt to spin a greater thread between the chapters. Given that each chapter was written by a separate author, this was probably to be expected.
