Book Description
A thoughtful selection of the celebrated architect's speeches and writings. This unique anthology draws from Louis Kahn's speeches, essays, and interviewssome never previously publishedto capture the evolution and central tenets of the influential American architect's thinking, from his early work of the 1940s to his death in 1974. Professor Twombly's introduction and headnotes offer incisive commentary on the texts. 30 illustrations.

more poet than architect.......2007-03-21
When one reads Kahn, one finds a hope. This hope is a hope that promises
growth. His last and best philosophical claims, "Silence" and "Light"
invites reader to the "unmeasurable" dimension. It's the dimension of
vertical sublimity and archaic gravity that he saw during his travels in
Egypt and residency in Rome.
Reader is surprised by the fact that Kahn composed Kimbell and Dakka
by poetry long before actual buildings were built. His individual rooms
form a community ,,, his material reveals the story of construction ,,,
his light brings life to every corner of the building.
Steven Holl used to say that he wanted to work for Kahn right after
schooling because he was the only architect (except one landscape
architect) who has a thought. In Holl's words, "Kahn had an idea
that brought about phenomena."
I sometimes wonder what makes me come back to Kahn. For long, I thought
I was under the spell of Vincent Scully. Then, I thought Exeter/ British
Art Gallery/ Kimbell mesmerized me. Few years ago, I was thrilled to
see Kent Larson's unbuilt projects' renderings. Recenltly,
Nathaniel's "My Architect" shocked me.
Reading this book, now I know why I stick to Kahn.
It's his words. Words that can only be spoken by a person who dares
to pick up burning charcoal. Words that can only be charged by a
person who lives solely on proselytizing architecture.
I hope Kahn's powerful words wet your thirst and silence your
worries as well.
Very Essential.......2006-04-14
I was required to purchase this book for a class on Louis Kahn, and have found it to be an indespensible source of inspiration in everything that I do. I took the class as an art history major who has an intense fascination with architecture, and a love of all things Kahn. The book is a serries of lectures and conversations between Kahn and his students. Some of the questions posed are questions that as creators we all face, and Kahn's answers which may not always offer a perfect solution, make the reader aware that the questions we cannot answer are the source of passion in design. Kahn has an amazing ability to enliven the art of architecture. Because of several events in my life I have chosen the path of design for my future, and one day that road should include architecture. I keep this book close at hand, for days I feel overwhelmed. Kahn's simple words sooth the soul and sometimes make a heart skip a beat.

Pretty photos and decent directions demonstrate how to create dozens of different projects out of enamel, glass, pearl, ceramic, semiprecious, and other types of beads. From the basics of equipment and foundation techniques like threading, knotting, and finishing, to designing striking necklaces, earrings, bracelets, and brooches, A World of Beads takes the novice or intermediate beader through the fundamentals to an attractive finished product, with stops along the way to admire the beads of China, Europe, India, and Africa. --Amy Handy
Customer Reviews:
My style of bead book!.......2002-09-08
Of my several bead books, this is one of my favorites. The instructions are very clear, and the same techniques are used repeatedly for most of the jewelry pieces, for example, stringing the beads on thread, and using calottes to finish the ends. There are a few other techniques also, and I did pick up a few new ones for my own use, for example, how to work with leather thong in jewelry -- braiding it and finishing the ends with findings I hadn't used before.
But what makes me keep this book constantly on hand is its many pictures of jewelry, featuring mostly necklaces with a broad range of bead types. There are a lot of beautiful pieces for giving me ideas for bead combinations, color arrangements, and patterns. The earring section also has some very attractive and easy to make earring styles. Though published several years ago, these designs do not look outdated at all. I see that this book is not currently published and the sellers who have it are selling it at quite a high price, but it could very well be worth it for someone wanting to have a source of ideas.
Wonderful book full of inspirational designs.......2000-08-14
When I ordered this book, I was looking for something that would have lots of pictures of various kinds of beaded jewelry. I definately found what I was looking for in this book! It's got wonderful photos of designs the author has created, along with how-to instructions (nothing too difficult). Nearly every picture has helped get the creative ideas flowing! It also has a bit on the history of beads, plus a section on making your own beads. Good book for beginners and those wanting pictures for ideas!
World of Beads.......2000-04-22
The dust jacket on this book is covered with luscious, rhythmical beaded jewelry that invites a look inside. The photography inside the book is just as exciting. There is no history of beads here, just a straight plunge into creating beautiful accessories.
Barbara starts by defining equipment needed, then quickly instructs on two basic techniques: necklace threading and earring making. It takes her only three pages to do it, demonstrating her absolute clarity of instructions.
Now the projects begin with a myriad of design options from which to choose. She winds up by introducing you to do-it-yourself beads, such as polymer clay, air-dry clay and papier-mache', using them effectively in some elegant designs. A helpful glossary and index are at the end.
This is an excellent book on beading techniques........1999-01-16
This is the first book I have come across which explains beading chains and making earrings so clearly. The instructions and diagrams are very simple and easy to follow. The book is filled with BEAUTIFUL designs created by the author. This book is great for beginners and for people wanting to know more about beads before they take it up as a hobby.

An incredibly compelling fictional biography of one of America's most familiar icons, Marilyn Monroe. Kathryn Hyatt, in telling this story in the comics medium, creates an atmosphere not possible in a prose biography. Here Marilyn speaks for herself--to her psychoanalyst, to a reporter--and ultimately to the reader of this book. Beginning where her unstable mother leaves off, Marilyn begins to dream of fame in early childhood. The reader follows Monroe's rise to stardom, progressing through the lower depths of Hollywood into the hard realities of stardom. Seen through the prism of Marilyn's inner world, her achievements and failures take on a new complexity and poignancy.
Customer Reviews:
Great book, could have been better.......2006-05-26
I love the idea of a comic book style story of Marilyns life, Facts are mixed with a bit of fiction (being that no one really knows the words Marilyn said), but all and all it is a wonderful little book, and very sympathetic to Marilyn and does go along with her life story, seems to be well researched with rare stories like when little Norma Jeans dog Tippy was shot by a neighbor. It tells about her sad childhood at the orphanage, but no mention of her first marriage and has little about her marriage to Joe Dimaggio or death which I think would have been interesting. The story centers around Marilyn's struggle to become an actress and problems with the sudio, relationship with Johnny Hyde and husband Arther Miller. I do feel there is a sense of her personality and soul that comes through. Unique & fun and Otherwise its just a cute entertaining book to collect, but for her life story I feel there are better books out there. Leaves you with alot to think about with a sad Marilyn saying "I would like to believe in the possibilty of happiness". Also to comment on the last review. I heard the story about Marilyn having a daughter also, by all accounts are false.

You know how someone says of a book "I couldn't put it down"? Sometimes it's hyperbole, and sometimes they're talking about this book. After all the tell-all books and the innumerable tv movies and mini-series, this simple comic book manages to capture something new of Marilyn/Norma Jean Baker. Her soul.

Emotion before craft.......1999-10-07
Another tome from someone who's paycheck comes from a University rather than readers. And she teaches the same. These type of writers should get out of their ivory towers and into the trenches and learn their craft, especially before they set out to teach others. This book was strong on emotion, but weak on craft.
an absolutely riveting collection!.......1999-07-27
i have always loved krysl's short stories -- and hope her other collections become available again -- but with this book, she's hit her stride. she tells it like it is...and in such beautiful language! let's have MORE from this author, who outdoes most short-story writers publishing in the larger mainstream.
Unfortunate cover and title; finely crafted stories within........1998-10-31
This is one book that cannot be judged by its title and cover. These strongly focused and insightful stories are both penetrating and lyrical -- revealing emotional landscapes of men and women people dealing with important issues. Some stories reflect the disquiet of interpersonal relationships; others deal with the harsh realities of lives interconnected in a global context. I attended a reading where Ms. Krysl read one story, about a man coming to terms with his role in the social injustices of his business dealings in a third world country. The audience was stunned. Instead of a cover of hazy red and gray, with an atom bomb explosion at the top and a reclining bikini-clad woman on the bottom, this book deserved a title and cover representative of the fine quality of the stories within it. This is a book to read, contemplate, and then re-read.

Twenty Things Adopted Kids Wish Their Adoptive Parents Knew
ASIN: 1889702242 |
Book Description
"An extraordinarily moving piece of work," -- Dirck W. Brown, Ed.D. This is the FIRST book to describe international adoption from the foreign adoptee's viewpoint. It will provide insight to all participating in the international adoption process -- parents, social workers, lawyers, policy makers -- by shedding light on the harm caused by uprooting children from their native cultures and heritages. Set against the backdrop of the Cold War, OUTER SEARCH/INNER JOURNEY chronicles the true story of a German orphan adopted by American parents and his life-long quest for belonging. Author Peter F. Dodds writes in a flowing, narrative style that draws the reader into the adoptee's unique struggle for identity by describing both his exterior and interior lives. OUTER SEARCH/INNER JOURNEY is the search for roots and the parallel inner journey for healing. The book is about loss of family and ethnic heritage, rejection and abandonment, shame, guilt, rage and betrayal. The story is also about triumph, faith, forgiveness and the infinite power of love. With a foreword by Nancy Verrier, M.A., and two appendices --alternatives to international adoption, and an adoption resource directory.
Customer Reviews:
Learned alot - yet still questions.......2006-08-13
This book opened my eyes to a different side of adotpion that I had not considered. As most I looked at adoption as givng a child a home he would not have otherwise been able to experience. This book showed me that there is much more to this process and those adopting need assistance in helping the child understand and to feel loved - in showing it - not saying it.
I would be very intereted in knowing how this author has lived the last 10 years - has he truly opened his heart and accepted love when given - or is he still searching and still has fear that he will not be fulfilled.
It was a very touching book for me.
This could be a Movie.......2004-01-30
I could not put down the book! You will truly become part of the story. I felt I was there right along on the incredible journey to find Peter's birth-mother. I have not read a book in a long time that has stayed with me long after I have finished it- like "Outer Search, Inner Journey." If you are looking for a book that will lift your spirit, and celebrate the joy of overcoming adverse conditions-this is a must read. I hope there is a sequel.
I couldn't put it down.......2001-08-26
I picked up Outer Search\Inner Journey on a Tuesday night and started reading that evening. I was so captivated by this story that I took the next day off from work to finish reading this incredible book. I am not adopted but enjoy reading autobiographies. This book drew me into the author's life, his experiences-thoughts-feelings--like none other I have read. I felt I was by his side every page of his life. After reading this story, I am surprised adoption agencies placing foreign children don't discuss the destrutiveness caused by the child's loss of language, culture, heritage, history and family, as well as the emotional toll caused when a child is taken from her/his native land. I have friends who beleive it is quite fashionable to adopt children from abroad. This book offers a picture of the complexities and drawbacks of international adoption. Still, the author doesn't blame and his story is one of overcoming immense barriers to find purpose and fullfillment in life. A must read for everyone desiring to read a superbly written book with a powerful plot!
Thought-provoking portrayal of the other side of adoption........1998-12-01
Most people would like to believe that adoption is a lovely solution to the problem of an unwanted child. Taking a child from one world and immersing him or her into another without regard is as absurd as expecting a horse to live under water. Like Peter F. Dodds I was taken from my homeland, Germany, and plunged into another world. The shock and trauma that he went through is as honest and as real as it gets. What happened to Peter Dodds is what happens when trauma, (in this case the trauma of transcultural adoption), is not taken care of. As I read through this book I felt the chill of recognition at his questions as well as his confusion regarding his own identity. In many ways his struggle mirrored mine. This is a book that anyone involved in inter-country adoption should read.
Not what I hoped for.......1998-10-14
Although Mr. Dodds raises many good points about international adoptions, many things went overlooked. I would have welcomed information about how he really felt about connecting to the "German" part in him that he had lost....rather than the same feelings so many adoptees have about not feeling "connected." The difference between his international adoption and a "national" adoption were not apparent to this reader (and adoptee), who lived in Europe for many years.
Here again, I felt his writing was not as explanatory and much was missing. I walked away from the book not fully understanding what he had learned from his experiences

Customer Reviews:
A Mother's Guide to Raising Healthy Children--Naturally.......2002-10-13
Sue Frederick has written about natural products for years. When her daughter was born, she consulted experts about the best ways to keep her healthy. She shares all that's she learned in A Mother's Guide to Raising Healthy Children--Naturally. She focuses on preventing disease and emphasizes that, while antibiotics can sometimes be very useful, they are not the solution for most childhood ailments. Frederick says that "natural medicine does hold the answers we're looking for."
She begins with breast feeding and the benefits it offers to children's immune systems. She then moves to a discussion of nutrition in general, saying that "the food you feed your child creates the foundation for her future health." Frederick warns strongly against giving children fruit juice, citing the effect all the sugar in it has on juvenile immune systems.
She devotes a chapter to the issue of childhood immunizations, describing each one and emphasizing that parents have the right to choose whether or not to have their children immunized.
Frederick also discusses nurturing, saying that "if your child feels truly loved and knows that you'll always be there for her, that inner peace and sense of security will help strengthen her immunity and ability to fight off illnesses." She includes commentary from a variety of experts, explaining how they've helped their children develop spiritually.
One section of the book is devoted to specific natural remedies for common childhood illness, such as colds, fever, colic, earaches, etc. Frederick then includes a complete discussion of the use of herbs, homeopathy, flower essences, Chinese medicine, and nutritional supplements, all with age-appropriate dosages.
She finishes with a "Child's Materia Medica," which explains how to use various natural remedies, and suggestions for a home health care kit, enabling parents to have everything needed on hand.
Jay Gordon, M.D. writes in the foreword: "Sue Frederick's book has helped me--and would help every doctor, health-care practitioner, and parent--remember one crucial fact: A child's body will heal itself naturally if we stay out of the way and use gentle remedies, wisdom, and guidance." Readers will find that A Mother's Guide to Raising Healthy Children--Naturally provides all the information they need to keep their children healthy and happy.
Outstanding Health book for Everybody.......2000-03-20
I met the author at her booksigning. Although, I don't have children, I believed in her message and intended to give this book to my sister-in-law. It was so good, I kept it for myself. The sections on supplements, homeopathy, and flower essences are so informative and easy to read. Anybody could apply this information to improve their health. I will buy more books to give to friends who have children. This book should be in every parent's library.
Must have book for Moms (and Dads).......2000-01-19
This book offers so many insites into raising a healthy and happy child and specifics about what to do to keep your child healthy or get them healthy again if they've gotten sick - and without drugs and chemicals. Like most mothers I do not want to give my daughter unnecessary drugs, but I also hate to see her sick or uncomfortable. These natural remedies WORK and I feel good about using them. It is so great to have someone really help you when you have that horrible feeling of not knowing how to best help your child. This book is like having a trustworthy healer right in your home. Thanks Sue Frederick for your help.
A must-have book for every mother.......1999-12-29
As a mother of a five year old, I can't tell you how delighted I am at finding this book. I wish I'd had it five years ago. This book is a must for any mother who wants to raise a healthy child, physically and emotionally.
This book covers a wide range of issues, from breast feeding to nutritional supplements; from herbal and homeopathic remedies to Chinese medicine. In chapter 6, "A Stay-Healthy Plan for the Cold and Flu Season," I found a great list to post on the refrigerator. Ms. Frederick uses a simple and direct writing style to explain everything in an understandable way. It is an ideal handbook for mothers on the run and pressed for time. This book will also make a great gift for a new mother.
A Book Straight from the Heart.......1999-12-15
"I've known Sue Frederick for almost 10 years and only she could write such a caring, tender book straight from the heart. Sue waited 42 years to have her first child and the love and compassion she holds for her daughter is apparent on every page of this guide. If you truly want to nurture your child using natural approaches that highlight good nutrition and gentle remedies, this book is for you."

Book Description
William Rhodes Davis was Adolf Hitler's main agent of influence in the United States. Among Davis's many nefarious deeds was his acquisition of much of the oil Hitler needed to start World War II and the delivery of five million dollars to the Republican Party for the presidential campaign of 1940. Davis was a superb manipulator who could beguile the Nazis while simultaneously receiving the assistance of labor leader John L. Lewis and President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Thought to be the model for the American Nazi in the motion picture Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Davis was an enigmatic, larger-than-life villain whose story is told here for the first time.
This revealing book tells how powerful American, British and Mexican business and political leaders helped a talented and complex man serve Hitler while he made and lost and made again millions of dollars. It also looks into the Establishment's attempts to cover up the part that prominent American leaders played in Davis's activities and maybe his mysterious death. Mystery Man is a fascinating story of espionage, political intrigue, and corporate skullduggery that will add an exciting new element to our understanding of the war years.
Customer Reviews:
An Excellent Examination of a Nazi Opportunist.......2000-06-27
America has always been cursed with opportunists willing to do business with dictators. The current crop of people willing to profit from China - from President Clinton's apparent cash payments from the Chinese secret police to Republican businessmens' use of near slave labor to boost their profits - have their antecedents in William Rhodes Davis, who made a fortune supplying Hitler with the oil to launch World War II. There were many mysterious things about Davis - his relationship to FDR, his role as a Nazi agent, even his death. Mr. Harrington doesn't, can't give us the answers to everything, but he does a brilliant job laying out the facts that are known. The author is both an investment banker and a sensible man. Both are necessary skills to bring to a book like this. As an investment banker, he is anexcellent guide through the thickets of financial manueverings. As a sensible man, he weighs the information carefully and allows the reader to draw his own conclusions. I have only one quibble: he mentions that Sir Harry Oakes became associated with Davis shortly before Davis' strange death. Oakes himself of course figured in a strange murder case in the Bahamas shortly thereafter. I would have liked the author to see if there was any connection between the cases. That is the minorest of quibbles, however, and readers of this book will be able to reflect on just how many facets history has.

Book Description
At the start of the third Christian millennium we are aware of massive political, economic, and ideological changes which condition the chances of liberty, wealth, and equality. Yet it is surprisingly difficult to understand these forces, because we cannot see what surrounds us so closely. This book analyzes our condition by looking at the work of two great thinkers; F.W. Maitland provides a deep historical perspective, while Yukichi Fukuzawa lays down a wide comparative analysis.

Book Description
