3 out of 5 stars disappointed.......2007-08-27

I bought this book after reading the reviews here, and was a little disappointed. The book would be helpful to those who haven't worked/interned at a firm before, where one is frequently working with construction and detailed drawings. Its how all firms work once they've moved past the early design phase.

I had this book in College and it i sone of the reasons I got through school, I just graduated from Yale and where Mr. Kieran has an excellent reputation and I understand was once the Dean of the Architecture School. If you have a real interest in the art he is the master.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2002-11-01

I learned more about artchitecture from this book than during my 4 years at the University of Minn. I would highly recommend this book to anyone that is new to the field and working on becoming an Architect. I called Stephen Kieran at his frim and he even answered some questions for me.

The guy is a true professional.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2002-04-05

I read this book and I was amazed. These guys are very talented to the level of Frank Lloyd Wright. If you share a love for architecture buy this book.

It also makes a great coffee table book and a good gift.

    Book Description

Albert Marquet (1875-1947) is one of the most forgotten and neglected artists of the twentieth century. His early career followed that of Matisse, his close and lifelong friend. They were students together of the French symbolist painter Gustave Moreau and were important members of the Fauve movement. After that brief early affiliation, Marquet refused to ally himself with any dominant art style, preferring instead his own intuition; consequently, he developed a unique approach which drew from both Fauvism and Impressionism but was entirely his own.

From Fauvism to Impressionism: Albert Marquet is the catalogue of an exhibition of Marquet's work that will be touring the United States for the next two years. It showcases the artist's energetic landscapes, portraits, and startling nudes, and is accompanied by new essays placing his work in the context of modern art.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Too Often Overlooked.......2007-05-10

Albert Marquet found his artistic painting voice early and was an important and consistent player among his Fauve and Impressionist contemporaries.

I rated the book 5 stars as it is exactly what it claims to be. I would only wish that it was a heavy tome with more of everything he did, but that is not the intended scope of this book.

The reproductions are good and the writing is solid but the star is Marquet's truly wonderful paintings.

This closest friend of Matisse, dating from student days to death, Marquet incorporated the best from the Fauves, the Impressionists and cloisonné from Japanese prints, into a unique style and mood all his own.

I recommend this book as a 5 star introduction to a remarkable painter.

5 out of 5 stars Well-presented material on an underappreciated master.......2007-03-09

Albert Marquet, one of the bright lights of post-impressionism, is well-served by this exhibition catalogue. The biographic text and commentary on his work and the selection and reproduction of his works for the exhibition are first-rate. The reader learns a great deal about Marquet's association with his comtemporaries--often much better known--of the early 20th Century and gains an appreciation for his steadfast individualism as an artist. He deserves much greater exposure than he has gotten to date and this book is certainly serves to meet that need.

Mr. Oertelt came and spoke at my college in MN when I was a junior. Not only was he an amazing speaker, but he made the Holocaust a reality to everyone packed in that auditorium. He signed his book for everyone who wished to purchase it. I read it in one night unable to out it down!!! Highly recommended!

            5 out of 5 stars stirring memoir.......2000-08-27

Oertelt tells the story of his life in Germany from his 1938 until his liberation from a concentration camp. It is a stirring memoir -- heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time. He uses the analogy of an 18 link chain to demonstrate how each link was important to his survival. The details in the book are remarkable in their lucidity and specificity. He is never graphic in his descriptions, but he is brutally honest. In the end, it is an uplifing tale in the context of terrible sadness.

American astronauts may have lived the dream of seeing space, but they never would have made it without Guenter Wendt. In The Unbroken Chain, this unsung hero tells his story, and he's got the right stuff. Wendt, who immigrated to the United States from Germany in 1949, got a job as a mechanical engineer for McDonnell Aircraft that launched his space career. He eventually became the man who supervised preparations for every mission from the Mercury program through the early shuttle flights. He was the last person the astronauts would see before they closed the hatch, and he became something of a legend at NASA. The Unbroken Chain features Wendt's accounts of his career highlights, good and bad, as well as behind-the scenes revelations about missions and personalities. Three sections of great photos accompany the text, and best of all, the accompanying CD-ROM features a tour of Cape Canaveral hosted by Wendt himself. A must-have for space buffs, and a great accompaniment to the NASA Mission Reports series, also from Apogee Books. --Therese Littleton

            Book Description

Guenter Wendt's autobiography is a ground shaking document of the glory days of manned spaceflight, told from the perspective of the launch pad.

4 out of 5 stars Life on the Launch Pad.......2003-08-07

Memoirs are in vogue for the pioneers of the space age. In the last few years memoirs have appeared by astronauts Gene Cernan, John Glenn, Gordon Cooper, Wally Schirra, Alan Bean, Deke Slayton, Alan Shepard, Gene Cernan, Jim Lovell, Apollo flight directors Gene Kranz and Chris Kraft, Marshall Space Flight Center engineer Homer Hickam, Jr., and Lunar Module designer Tom Kelly. This is another memoir from the heroic era of human space flight, but one from a unique vantagepoint. Guenter Wendt was the legendary "pad leader" for all of the human space launches from the first Mercury mission in 1961 through the last Apollo flights.

German born, with a rich accent that remains to the present, as a McDonnell and later North American Rockwell employee Guenter Wendt held responsibility for capsule test, checkout, and launch operations at America's spaceport at Cape Canaveral, Florida. In that capacity he crossed paths with every astronaut and many of NASA's senior officials in a career that ended with his retirement in 1989. This memoir, co-written with Russell Still, is filled with dozens of such stories about those interactions-some classic, many never revealed before, a few embarrassing, even more humorous-about the astronauts, technicians, engineers and other officials Wendt interacted with for three decades.

Wendt describes in this book a relentless pursuit of excellence, safety, and security both for his team and the mission under his care. Astronauts respectfully called him "Pad Fuhrer," a term not always used with affection. Wendt's emphasis on successfully completing the mission, ensuring the safety of the astronauts, and creatively sidestepping bureaucracy earned the admiration of many. His determined approach to the work, and the way in which he took personal responsibility for what happened on his launch pad became legendary along Florida' Space Coast. Many astronauts recall how Wendt strapped them into their capsules, shook their hands, offered words of support, and closed the hatch, the last person seen before their trip into space. In those moments, they were thankful for his abrasive attention to detail and his forceful leadership on the launch pad.

Wendt's memoir is replete with good-natured stories, and some that are not so good-natured, many of which are the stuff of legend. It should come as no surprise to anyone that many astronauts had a wild, devil-may-care side to their personalities. From Gus Grissom's sexual peccadilloes to Alan Shepard's practical jokes to John Glenn's stuffed shirt persona that wasn't, Wendt adds several wild new chapters to the antics of the astronauts.

4 out of 5 stars Ausgezeichnet, Guenter Wendt, und Danka Herr McDonnell.......2003-07-05

As an engineer who grew up on the back gate of NASA-JSC, I really enjoyed reading Guenter's Story. I enjoyed the easy to read format, the larger print, and the funny stories that Guenter tied in, especially the one on the CB radio out in the Mojave desert where the operator on the receiving end asked Guenter, "what's your handle?" Guenther replied, "Col. Klink." The operator said, "you've got that accent down pat. You sound just like him!"

Seriously, the one thing that strikes me about several books out about the early days of the space race are the long hours, dedication, and committment that many engineers, scientists, technicians, and astronauts put in to reach the nation's goal of getting to the moon before 1970. Guenter described in detail the operations of the former McDonnell Corporation, and more companies today NEED to be organized the way James McDonnell (Mr. Mac) was back in the old days where things got DONE. The old McDonnell Corporation ran efficiently, and with very little (if any) beaurocratic "B.S." Mr. Mac would appoint someone in McDonnell to have full authority over one area and make decisions independently (this was Guenter Wendt), and he gave that single person control over the budget (the petty cash fund was sometimes used for sandwiches and coffee when Guenter and his crew were working late nights). Mr. Mac put QUITE A BIT OF TRUST IN HIS EMPLOYEES!! Mr. Mac would send them to school (Guenter took engineering classes in St. Louis), and Mr. Mac would even invite the astronauts over to his home for dinner (Guenter did the same thing - astronauts would go out on his boat or sleep on his couch). Mr. Mac was a man who treated his employees with respect and trust. He helped them learn and invested in them.

It was great to read a different story from a man involved in the early days of space flight. Guenter Wendt was a good leader, he would jump through hoops to get things done (such as the flag at the back entrance of the cape), and I loved the story about the painting that went on at Edwards AFB. There are other stories about problem solving, and getting around the beaurocratic "BS".

The epilogue gives insights for the public on getting back into space more aggressively. Congress-take these into consideration. Smaller projects from private investments, such as the X-Prize projects, is a good start. Let's go back now. I'm game for designing a nuclear powered rocket, a smaller shuttle, or a single stage to orbit launch vehicle.

Thanks for your insights, Mr. Guenter Wendt. More engineers and administrators are needed like you and James McDonnell (Mr. Mac) more than ever today.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting book, but too many errors.......2003-02-12

I worked as an engineer on the Gemini and Apollo projects, with McDonnell in St. Louis and at the Cape, working for Boeing on Apollos 8 through 13. Guenter's stories brought back many similar memories.

I can personally attest to Guenter's reputation at the Cape as the "Pad Führer"; nobody wanted to cross him! He was truly a legend in his own time.

Unfortunately, my enjoyment of the book was hampered by many technical and historical errors. However, most readers will not be aware of these and will enjoy it.

            5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully human!.......2003-02-11

While I agree that a chapter about Guenter's pre-NASA life really would have been a Good Thing, this book is fabulous.

I have read about 10 memoirs/books on apollo/gemini/mercury. This stands out in the following ways:

            - very good at getting the feel of the human beings and personalities, and a feel for Guenter himself.

            - wonderful humor and jokes scattered across.

            - details on pre-flight launch pad testing and procedures that are hard to find elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars This book is awesome.......2002-10-18

Once I started reading the book, I couldn't put it down. I know Bob Crippen and to read about the jokes they played on each other to break the monotony up was great. Guenter did a great job with this book. For any Space History buff this is a great addtion to the library.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Entry Point Researching Jewish Geneology.......2001-06-05

Most people may have difficulty researching their Jewish geneology, since most available works are in Hebrew. This is especially true if one's geneology is Rabbinic in nature.

This book deals with only certain families and is rather terse.

BUT....for what it touches on, it opens to its readers a whole new world. Its subject is the Katzenellenbogen family - which had ties into almost every major European Rabbinic family. Its sources are the same Hebrew books that many of us could not penetrate.

This book is extremely useful if you have even minor ties to any of these families.

It may very well lead you to even more sources regarding your family's past.

                            Book Description

June 1863. The Gettysburg Campaign is in its opening hours. Harness jingles and hoofs pound as Confederate cavalryman James Ewell Brown (JEB) Stuart leads his three brigades of veteran troopers on a ride that triggers one of the Civil War's most bitter and enduring controversies. Instead of finding glory and victory-two objectives with which he was intimately familiar-Stuart reaped stinging criticism and substantial blame for one of the Confederacy's most stunning and unexpected battlefield defeats. In Plenty of Blame to Go Around: Jeb Stuart's Controversial Ride to Gettysburg, Eric J. Wittenberg and J. David Petruzzi objectively investigate the role Stuart's horsemen played in the disastrous campaign. It is the first book ever written on this important and endlessly fascinating subject.

Stuart left Virginia under acting on General Robert E. Lee's discretionary orders to advance into Maryland and Pennsylvania, where he was to screen Lt. Gen. Richard Ewell's marching infantry corps and report on enemy activity. The mission jumped off its tracks from virtually the moment it began when one unexpected event after another unfolded across Stuart's path. For days, neither Lee nor Stuart had any idea where the other was, and the enemy blocked the horseman's direct route back to the Confederate army, which was advancing nearly blind north into Pennsylvania. By the time Stuart reached Lee on the afternoon of July 2, the armies had unexpectedly collided at Gettysburg, the second day's fighting was underway, and one of the campaign's greatest controversies was born.

Did the plumed cavalier disobey Lee's orders by stripping the army of its "eyes and ears?" Was Stuart to blame for the unexpected combat the broke out at Gettysburg on July 1? Authors Wittenberg and Petruzzi, widely recognized for their study and expertise of Civil War cavalry operations, have drawn upon a massive array of primary sources, many heretofore untapped, to fully explore Stuart's ride, its consequences, and the intense debate among participants shortly after the battle, through early post-war commentators, and among modern scholars.

The result is a richly detailed study jammed with incisive tactical commentary, new perspectives on the strategic role of the Southern cavalry, and fresh insights on every horse engagement, large and small, fought during the campaign. About the authors: Eric J. Wittenberg has written widely on Civil War cavalry operations. His books include Glory Enough for All (2002), The Union Cavalry Comes of Age (2003), and The Battle of Monroe's Crossroads and the Civil War's Final Campaign (2005). He lives in Columbus, Ohio.

                            J. David Petruzzi is the author of several magazine articles on Eastern Theater cavalry operations, conducts tours of cavalry sites of the Gettysburg Campaign, and is the author of the popular "Buford's Boys" website at www.bufordsboys.com. Petruzzi lives in Brockway, Pennsylvania.

                            4 out of 5 stars JEB's Ride.......2007-09-23

Regardless of what one thinks of JEB Stuart, "Plenty of Blame to Go Around" is worth the time to read. The authors carefully analyze Stuart's part in the Gettysburg campaign using first hand accounts, secondary sources, and "color" commentary from beyond the written word. In regard to the later, I found it most helpful as the authors placed the realities of mounted warfare into the context of Stuart's actions. For instance few first hand accounts discuss how often horses were shod. Such was an action so common, they didn't think to mention it (as we wouldn't mention filling our gas tanks or changing oil in a narrative). Secondary accounts miss this important limitation when discussing what Stuart could or could not have accomplished. The authors here present this and other points that bear on the overall discussion. Interesting and very well written overall. The last few chapters deal directly with the "historiography" of Stuart's ride, and very professionally I might add. Clear distinction is made between the author's opinion and the secondary sources. In the end, the authors don't play their hand early with regard to conclusions. Facts are presented and different interpretations offered, then the authors make their conclusions.

Three points which prevent this from becoming a full five star submission in my opinion. First, the maps presented are not detailed enough to support the text. When I read an historical text, particularly military history, it is rather cumbersome to pull up a modern road map to place things in context of the terrain. Second, the "tour" section at the end should be more inclusive, and deal with more than just the Pennsylvania sites. Lastly, I would prefer the authors to have brought into the discussion more of the action in Loudoun Valley in the week preceding the start of Stuart's ride.

4 out of 5 stars Plenty of blame, Plenty Good!.......2007-05-22

I have read several books on the Stuart/Gettysburg controversy, this one covers all bases and brings into perspective a few new and relatively uncovered issues.
If you've read anythings else this tome will still be worth the read in the way it covers the information.

5 out of 5 stars Plenty of Blame.......2007-05-09

Amazing what I learned about my neighboring area. I have lived in this general area all my life and knew there were civil war events in my area but not to this extent.

The tour listed at the end is one I will be taking. I travel on some of these roads and never knew that troop movements occurred on them.

Recommend this book to anyone interested in civil war history. Strongly recommend it to anyone living in the area, new or long time resident.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting reading just misses the mark.......2007-02-20

I live in the general area where most of the action occurred & learned quite a bit regarding these battles & skirmishes. The book is well written & researched. The continual rehash of whose fault Stuart's delay was (granted this is the central theme of the book but who wants to read the same dispatches over & over?) gets a bit tedious however.

                            5 out of 5 stars Bravo!.......2007-01-29

Just when you thought there was no more to be added to the Gettysburg saga, this book emerges as one of the best ever. Wittenburg and Petruzzi have done an outstanding job of giving us a different and more detailed look at this important historical event. I am truly mesmerized by this portrait of Civil War history and believe this book will stand as a definitive look at JEB Stuart and his controversial ride. I wish I could give this book more stars than 5! It is truly that good.

                              Book Description

This book on the Treaty of Versailles constitutes a new synthesis of peace conference scholarship. It illuminates events from the armistice in 1918 to the signing of the treaty in 1919, and scrutinizes the motives, actions, and constraints that informed decision making by the French, American, and English politicians who bore the principal responsibility for drafting the peace settlement. It also addresses German reactions to the draft treaty and the final agreement. A detailed examination of the proceedings from the point of view of the main protagonists forms the core of the investigation.
