Mortise and Tenon.......2006-07-28
Being a fan of Sarah Handler, its easy to feel the furniture flow through the Ming Architecture.
Just having retured from China and Tibet, this book was in the back of my mind as I stood and gazed up at the columns and beams mortised and tenoned together to form the typical Chinese structural backbone. Sarah has made the connection between the structural engineering of Ming/Qing building skills and the master carpenters' use of the Lu Bang Jin manual that describes appropriate and propitious use of shapes,materials, orientation and all things lucky in architecture. Buy this book and you will be happy,have prosperity and long life!

disappointing analysis of furniture and architecture.......2005-07-29
chinese furniture have a strong relationship with architecture, in its proportion, construction, and relationship to the space. I was looking forward to see a more detailed analysis of such relationship but this book turned out to be a mediocre repetition of numerous chinese furniture books already in the market. Many of the pictures are from dealer's photos or Museum's existing photos. The reference paintings are primary from Chin P'ing Mei or similar paintings which have been published numerous times by other authors. The sketch or drawings are mediocre. There are no measured or proportional anaylsis of the furniture to the architecture. I have returned this book.

Works are grouped by technique, and each section begins with an explanation of the process or processes illustrated within the chapter. Print publisher, curator and former gallery owner Chris Byrne has specialized in contemporary fine art prints for the last fifteen years. Using examples from ten of North America's top print houses, Byrne describes both basic techniques and the joint experimentation of artist and master printer as they create new images for an expanding audience.

One Warhola of a book.......2002-11-06
The mass production of this text serves as an aesthetic nurturing for the starving art enthusiasts of our time. Clement Greenberg and Susan Sontag would vehemently disapprove. Byrne sheds light on the multi-valent reality of the collaborative process. Printmaking has never been so sexy. I highly recommend this book.
Useful Survey of Technique.......2002-04-22
Byrne provides a good introduction to the four major groups of printing techniques -- relief (woodblock, linocut, etc.), intaglio (etching, aquatint, engraving, and so on), lithography and screenprinting -- briefly describing their history, mechanics and characteristic effects. If you are interested in fine prints, this book will give you the vocabulary, although you really have to see some of the techniques in action to understand how they work.
Text is a small portion of the book, which is largely devoted to contemporary prints themselves, with commentary from some of the printers. The book is *not* a general survey of contemporary fine prints, however. Instead, the book seems to have been conceived as a collaboration between Guild.com (an Internet retailer of fine and decorative art) and several of the contemporary fine print publishers who make their work available through Guild (as well as through more traditional distribution channels). Printmakers who do not sell through Guild are not represented, and artists who work on their own (typically in woodblock or linocut, which do not require a press) are similarly excluded. Even so, many of the finest printmakers in the US are included, and the quality and variety of the work displayed is stunning. Color reproduction is quite good, although not perfect.

Old time Hollywood.......2001-03-13
Read about the juicy tidbits of the stars' lives. For example, Jerry Lewis's wife told the author, Shelia Graham, that the secret of their happy marriage was, "We never allow Jerry Lewis into the house." She meant the show business side of him. Soon after that they got divorced. There is a chapter on "Children of Hollywood." The daughter of Gene Kelly is now a psychiatrist. Shelley Winters' daughter Tory changed her name because she hated anything connected with Hollywood. These are all personal anecdotes of the author's life as a gossip columnist in Hollywood. There are some parts about F Scott Fitzgerald, just a bit though.

Great for classroom use!.......2004-07-02
I used this book with my students, who were fascinated and inspired by the variety of stories. They were especially interested in reading the introductory poem/spiritual and comparing the struggles of the slaves with the struggles of the segregation era with the continuing struggles post-segregation. A good choice for high school and advanced middle-grade readers.
INCREDIBLE.......2004-06-25
I saw this book on display at a large bookstore and i was instantly attracted to it by merely reading the first page. It tells of the personal first hand experiences of couragous men and women who throughout history have stood up against injustice. Though many accounts are from the civil rights movement of the 50s and 60s many others are on the womens movement, native american, latin american and disability rights. This is the first book i have read by Juan Williams and after finishing it i have decided it will not be my last. Also after reading this book i feel empowered and confident just by reading the incredible experiences of others included in the book. I would DEFFINETLY reccomend this book. It is incredibly interesting from a historical standpoint, a civil rights standpoint and so many others. Go check out this book!

In this two volume set, America's only, "General of the Armies," John J., "Blackjack," Pershing narrates the United States' role in World War I (WWI) from his vantage point as the Commander of the American Expeditionary Force (AEF). He recounts what it was like to create an army from scratch, then equip, train, transport it overseas, and fight it in a global conflict against a battle-hardened enemy. Pershing provides insight into the difficulties of mobilizing a nation for war that are as valid today as in 1917... Historians desiring insights into the war will find Pershing a treasure trove of information...
Well written but unfortunately, bigeoted point of view ........1999-01-16
General Pershing was, perhaps, the best person to be the Commander-In-Chief of the American Expeditionary Forces in France during World War I. He did an excellent job of co-ordinating the American forces.
I have a problem in understanding his logic when it comes to the Black Americans Soldiers which he controlled. The General states that he was not a predjudist person and was in charge of the 24th Infantry (black) during the Mexican-American war. He praises their work, yet, when the 93rd Division (black), American,arrived in France; Pershing assigned them to the French Army.
Pershing made the statement that Americans will not fight under another countries Flag but then gave the 93rd Division (provisional) to the French.
Further on, General Pershing makes the statement that Black Americans are good soldiers as long as their are white officers leading them. There is no mention of visiting the Regiments (369th, 370th, 371st, and 372nd) during his tours of the regiments.
The Generals attitude towards black officers resulted in an open field-day on all black american officers.
The 92nd Division, a complete black-american division was not given its rightful respect, due awards, and training while in france.

Have you ever wanted to know what was going on behind the scenes? A work of military oral history that spans generations.......2005-06-23
"My Country, My Right to Serve: Experiences of Gay Men and Women in the Military, World War II to the Present" is compiled and with a preface by Mary Ann Humphrey. Humphrey, a captain in the U.S. Army Reserve who was forced to resign her commission for being gay, explains the origin of this book in her preface. The book is a collection of oral histories of lesbian and gay male veterans whose service spans from World War II to the final years of the Cold War era. The veterans in this book are a diverse group: women and men; Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps; active duty, National Guard, and Reserve; officer and enlisted; and of various ethnic backgrounds. They represent a wide range of military jobs: WW2 infantryman, Navy electronics officer, Army court reporter in Vietnam, combat medic, drill sergeant, pilot, recruiter, and more. Besides Humphrey, a total of 42 veterans are featured; some use pseudonyms.
Each featured veteran tells his or her story in the first person. This is a fascinating collection of voices. Some recurring themes include gay "networking" within the military and the impact of the AIDS crisis. But I found the most striking recurring theme to be the surveillance, harrassment, intimidation, coercion, and even imprisonment of gay servicemembers. Some of these stories are truly disturbing. Many of the veterans talk about the devastating psychological consequences of such experiences. On the other hand, a number of the vets talk about the positive aspects of their service.
For those with some knowledge of the perennially controversial "gays-in-the-military" issue, some of the featured veterans may be familiar: Vernon "Copy" Berg, Leonard Matlovich, Joseph Steffan, Perry Watkins, etc. There are some really noteworthy stories contained in this book. Johnnie Phelps recalls an extraordinary encounter with General Eisenhower when she served as a WAC motor sergeant during WW2. Air Force veteran Ruth Hughes recalls her experience as an African-American woman in uniform in the segregated South. Miriam Ben-Shalom recalls a career that includes service in both the Israeli Army and the U.S. Army. An equally remarkable career is that of J.W. "Skip" Godsey, a combat veteran of Vietnam who served in both the Navy and the Army. One veteran known as "Janice" recalls her career as an Army nurse, which culminated in her retirement as a full colonel.
This book is a fascinating and valuable contribution to American military history. Some of the achievements of these men and women are truly remarkable. Their voices are moving and thought-provoking. With a 1990 copyright date, however, the book is clearly in need of a sequel.

Fantastic Bomber Pilot Memoir.......2007-10-09
Every so often I read a World War Two bomber crewman memoir that reaches out and grabs me. Such is John C. Walter's outstanding book MY WAR: The True Experiences of a U.S. Army Air Force Pilot in World War Two, published by Authorhouse in 2004. Not since I read the late Gene Carson's Wing Ding have I felt like I've gotten into the head and heart of a bomber crewman in such detail.
Walter flew as a pilot with the 95th Bomb Group (H) out of Horham, England in World War Two. The book begins with his enlistment and early training and follows Walter and his crew across the Atlantic to England, where they complete 35 harrowing missions in the early months of 1945 flying a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress. Not all of the crew survives their tour, and many fellow crews also go down. Walter tells his story alternating the stress and terror of flying missions with the high-spirited living of the crewmen between missions. He explains many things that I never fully understood despite having read literally over a hundred bomber crew memoirs. I guess one could say Mr. Walter has an eye for detail that enables him to describe the experience in new and introspective ways. Considering he spent much of his career honing his writing skills as a technical writer for General Dynamics, he's had a lot of practice. He also has a wonderful dry sense of humor, which I appreciated greatly while reading.
Other pluses to the book are the good photographs throughout and the appendix, which describes in detail how to read a Pilot Information Sheet used on a mission. The book has 247 pages.
I managed to get hold of Mr. Walter today and I hope to use his insight and expertise while writing the 95th BG history this coming year. It is a wonderful book and I highly recommend it.

This book uses data collected in the American journal Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report for some 350 cities from around the world to look at trends in global mortality at the turn of the twentieth century, a period that witnessed some of the most dramatic changes in city growth on an international scale. The diseases considered are diphtheria, enteric fever, measles, scarlet fever, tuberculosis and whooping cough--as well as death from all causes. The data have never before been systematically analyzed and they give important insights into patterns of mortality from these diseases.
