Is there an echo in here?.......2002-09-22
I've never seen a book repeat so many of its images. Page after page of the same photos repeated over and over. I wasn't expecting that. The book is just okay. Nothing really new.

Engraving Glass: A Beginner's Guide
ASIN: 048625304X |
Book Description
Clear, illustrated introduction to diamond point, copper-wheel, drill engraving; also glass painting, mosaics, more.
Customer Reviews:
Older and still great!.......2004-06-19
This is the best book I have found on diamond-point engraving, which is what I do. I think it is better even than Boyd Graham's Engraving Glass:a Beginner's Guide. Barbara Norman, an English glass engraver herself, has a conversational style of writing that is also helpful and encouraging. I wish I had found this book when I was just getting started, it would have made things so much easier. Even so, I learned ideas for tools and methods I hadn't used, and it inspired me to do more with my work. Norman also includes historical information, somewhat English based, on glass decorating techniques included in the book, i.e. drill-engraving, cooper-wheel engraving, cold-painting, gold engraving under glass. I would love to see her do an updated edition of this book, because the photographic style of the book is dated as it was published in 1972; until then this is the best, especially on diamond-point engraving.
Book Description
Ba-ra-kei is the fierce and lyrical testament of the legendary Japanese writer Yukio Mishima, who shocked the world when he committed ritual suicide in 1970. The year marked Japan's new economic confidence, and Mishima accused the country of being "drunk with prosperity." Many in Japan regarded the suicide as a sensational act. However, with the publication of Mishima's final cycle of novels-conceived eight years prior to his death-it was revealed that his suicide was a carefully considered act, a gesture of historical implication in accord with the morbid and esoteric aesthetic that pervades his writing.
Mishima's elaborate and erotic psyche was captured nine years before his death by master photographer Eikoh Hosoe. This collaboration resulted in surreal photographs of Mishima taken in the baroque interior of his home. The props that surround the writer are the antithesis of the Japanese sensibility of understatement, alluding to Mishima's dark, theatrical imagination. The images in Ba-ra-kei grant us entry into the private world of an extraordinary subject.
Customer Reviews:
Another aspect of Mishima.......2001-12-31
A world apart from his words, movies, and actions, this team effort with the famed japanese photographer will surprise. The centerfold image with a sledgehammer starting straight up at the lense is chilling. Black and white photos are offset with unique use of monochormatic coloring to further shock the eye. 10 years after finding this one I am willing to part with it. If you are a interested collector contact me at mmurd@hotmail.com
Long Search Rewarded.......1998-04-15
It took a long time for me to find this book (courtesy of Amazon.com) but it was definetly worth the frustration! This book of photography is a MUST for serious Mishima / Hosoe collectors and fans - it offers not only a set of beautifully taken photos but a deadly and not insignificant insight to both the photographer and his tempramental subject. Buy, beg, steal but whatever you do dont borrow it because you will be a sad man when the day of parting comes........

Customer Reviews:
A manual for cat owners........2002-12-22
What a cute little book. Each page has its own cartoon about cat owning rules. And I tell ya 99% of them are true. I don't have a cat myself but my aunt has 2 and everytime I'm there this book is proven to be acurate at least 10 times. Things like 'The Most Comfortable spot for a cat to nap-is any spot you were about to occupy' ring true as well as 'Cats need their space-and your space too'. I totally dig cats AND Garfield. And if you do too then get this book.
A must read for all cat lovers!.......2000-03-30
Oh, I just love Garfield. Only someone who has lived with cats many years can sometimes understand Jim Davis' humor. Every comic strip has truth behind it. Even when presented with Garfield's wicked sense of humor, a cat lover can see the every day life with a cat. Very fun, very true, and a definite must read for all cat lovers!

Like its subject, The Smartest Guys in the Room is ambitious, grand in scope, and ruthless in its dealings. Unlike Enron, the Texas-based energy giant that has come to represent the post-millennium collapse of 1990s go-go corporate culture, it's also ultimately successful. Penned by Fortune scribes Bethany McLean and Peter Elkind, the 400-page-plus chronicle of the scandal digs deep inside the numbers while, wisely, maintaining focus on the "smart guys" deep-frying the books. The likes of paternal but disengaged CEO Ken Lay (dubbed "Kenny Boy" by George W. Bush, one of many prominent public figures with whom he rubbed shoulders), cutthroat man-behind-the-curtain Jeff Skilling, and ethically blind numbers whiz Andy Fastow vividly come to life as they make a mockery of conventional accounting practices and grow increasingly arrogant and bind to their collective hubris. They're not a likable lot, and the writers find it difficult to suppress their astonishment and revulsion with the crew who rapidly went from golden boys and girls of the financial world to pariahs when the bill finally came due. The authors' unrepressed sarcasms are more than often unnecessarily given the scope of the outrage. Enron's leading lights were or a time celebrated for their ability to concoct nearly unfathomable business schemes to hide mounting shortfalls and keeping track on their machinations can be a chore, but, by sticking hard to the story behind the fall, McLean and Elkind have reported and written the definitive account of the Enron debacle. --Steven Stolder
Book Description
Just as Watergate was the defining political story of its time, so Enron is the biggest business story of our time. And just as All the President's Men was the one Watergate book that gave readers the full story, with all the drama and nuance, The Smartest Guys in the Room is the one book you have to read to understand this amazing business saga. And the critics agree:
This book is right up there with Den of Thieves and Barbarians at the Gate. . . . Those who want to learn what happened here, you don't have to read anything but this. James Cramer, CNBC
The best book about the Enron debacle to date. . . . Based on hundreds of interviews and fresh details, McLean and Elkind masterfully weave together the many strands of the Enron story. They shine in their characterizations of Enron's often incompetent executives. Wendy Zellner, BusinessWeek
News junkies and mystery lovers who enjoy financial scandals will devour this multilayered book. . . . The Smartest Guys in the Room will rival other models of the genre, including James Stewart's Den of Thieves. . . . The authors write with power and finesse. Their prose is effortless, like a sprinter floating down the track. . . . The character sketches of former chairman Kenneth Lay, former CEO Jeff Skilling and ex-chief financial officer Andrew Fastow are masterful. Edward Iwata, USA Today
Powerful and shocking. . . . succeed[s] in opening a disturbing window into both the company and the era . . . filled with fascinating characters and anecdotes. Jonathan A. Knee, The New York Times Book Review
The Smartest Guys in the Room is utterly professional, readable andeven though you know what's cominghighly entertaining. Daniel Gross, The Washington Post
Meticulously reported and compelling . . . a cautionary tale about highfliers who weren't as clever as they thought. David Koeppel, Entertainment Weekly
Customer Reviews:
Blunt, intriguing analysis of Enron.......2007-10-05
This book goes through Enron's rise and fall while analyzing each main character. McLean and Elkind have researched well.
This is quite entertaining and a fun read. The only downside is the large number of characters, but the authors have provided a character description list in the beginning of the book. I frequently referred to the characters' descriptions.
Overall, a good book on Enron's choices over the years.
The smartest guys in the room.......2007-09-10
A very well-written account of the rise & fall of Enron. I couldn't put it down
Wanted to read the book after seeing the documentary........2007-08-23
I purchased the book after seeing the documentary in an Ethics class taken during an MBA program at Oklahoma City University. I wanted a little more detail on how things got so blatently out of hand at Enron. I've also read the Conspiracy of Fools. I'm very intrigued by the human nature aspect of this story. We are not being realistic, if we don't think this very same situation could happen anywhere at anytime. More people didn't come forward because their personal livlihood was in jeopardy, even though they had concerns about the ethics of the operation. These were very smart people who let their arrogance get in the way. In the end, everyone was to blame, but no one was to blame. Based on what I understand of the personalities of the Enron Leaders - this was their destiny. It was bound to happen - it only took some time. The biggest question of all - who is next.
Great book on bad management.......2007-08-02
Bad management and the amazing power of human beings to self-delude is on full display in the Enron debacle. This book does a good job of telling a complex story with a large cast of characters. I think it will help supervisors and business owners more that the latest fad book on business and leadership. These guys make excellent bad examples.
Case Study of Corruption on Steroids.......2007-06-05
I purchased this book after having watched the movie of the same name. The book is a very detailed and meticulous recounting of the rampant greed and corruption that was Enron. What you come to discover is that through highly-technical accounting schemes and tricks Enron turned itself into a seeming juggernaut of a business from just a staid old pipeline company. Enron really thought that the free market enabled it to do anything and trade any kind of commodity from weather derivatives to paper pulp, oil, and broadband. What you come to find out in this book though is that they never really had a way to deliver what they kept promising Wall Street.
Enron was a big house of cards all propped up by their stock price. Once that dropped, all hell broke loose. The company was obsessed with the stock price, posting it in elevators and encouraging employees to invest as much of their 401K monies into it as possible. They even created elaborate hedge funds that were based on the stock staying above certain levels. In order to keep the stock at lofty levels they lied and used "creative" accounting to fool Wall Street.
The real reveal in reading this book however is that Jeff Skilling and Ken Lay really have a vast number of compatriots to join them as teh villians here. Andy Fastow, now the government stoolie, was arguably worse than both Lay and Skilling. And yet, thanks to his cooperation, he gets far less jail time.
This book is a slow read, and not for the half-hearted. For the vast majority you are really better off watching the film.

If you think parenting and literacy are important, you'll love Dr. Carol's new parenting book. A common theme throughout is that the parent is the child's first teacher and the home is the first school.
Part I offers practical tips on 65 different parenting topics, such as "Respect" and "Kids Need More Lap Top Time." Part II concentrates on over 20 reading games the whole family can enjoy: "
Customer Reviews:
Common Sense Personified.......2001-08-03
I was expecting a book that dealt in theory. This one was surely a surprise, for it offers such a practical approach to parenting that everyone can understand it, a marvel in this world of complicated solutions. I'm sure this book will be appreciated by my daughter who is now struggling with a first grader. This is one gift I can give her that will be of use for many years.
A winning approach.......2001-08-03
The book significantly highlights the importance of parenting. It is an exceptionally easy concept that keys in on what's really important. It's a practical guide to raising children in a complex world. Bravo to Dr. Kennedy!
Overpriced Common Sense.......2001-07-21
This book was given as a gift to me, and frankly there's nothing wrong with anything it suggests. However, this skinny, little paperback book is only useful to those who lack any common sense. The author says things such as "realize you, the parent, are key!" and "exhibit respectful behaviors at home"...geez, no kidding. The author means well, but I can't believe this book has a price of ..... I have never seen a paperback book of this size with such a high price tag (which is the main reason I am bothering to write this review). This book is not worth more than a few bucks, at most.
A must guide for all those interested in children........2001-05-16
A serious yet readily understandable guide to helping children grow into productive adults. Dr. Kennedy's common sense approach to this complicated subject is the key to the guide's success. Every parent, grandparent or, for that matter, anyone who is involved in raising a child will find this book a valuable tool.
Book Description
Kids haven't changed, parenting has. . . and not always for the better.
We can view the results of effective and ineffective parenting wherever we go: Just watch the children. Dr. Carol Kennedy offers practical advice to every parent in easy to understand examples and from years of personal and professional experience. Part One of the book offers suggestions on topics ranging from 'Nobody Wins the Blame Game,' to 'Clean Your Room!'
Each article is a quick-read, ranging from 500-1,000 words, easily read at one sitting for the busy parents of today.
Part Two "Literacy: Cracking the Code" is devoted entirely to the subject of reading and the parents' role in the preparation and enhancement of it.
From A to Z is issue and value driven, placing the joys and responsibilities of parenting in the hands of the parents. Since parenting leaves lasting imprints on our children's hearts, we need to take the time to do it right. Let's enjoy our children for the shor! t time they are under our care.
Customer Reviews:
Take the Paranoia out of Parenting.......2000-08-28
"Becoming a parent is easy," says Dr. Carol. "Being one is difficult." Parents need and want help, children need and want direction, and the A-Z encyclopedia fills the wants and needs of both. "Kids haven't changed, parenting has...and not always for the better," says Dr. Carol. Her from A-Z shows parents how to enjoy parenting while reclaiming their responsibility. "Parenting is best done by parents," insists Dr. Carol. With three decades of experience to support her philosophy Dr. Carol Kennedy offers sage advice to parents and grandparents, in raising or helping to raise children. Discipline is a cornerstone of Dr. Carol's effective parenting guide, and discipline, she says, is a gift. She advises giving it to your child, wrapped in love and care. Discipline is setting clear cut boundaries of behavior that provide children with direction, without witch they are likely to invent their own. From A-Z is a collection of Dr. Carol's published articles on parenting that address such issues and values as "R-E-S-P-E-C-T" and "Clean Your Room." This is more than a list of shoulds and shouldn'ts or do's and don'ts, and Dr. Carol wisely stays within her areas of expertise. Sensibly, she avoids areas of diet and medicine leaving those areas to doctors and dieticians. Many of us wish some medical practitioners were as considerate. She does provide examples and levelheaded pointers from her personal experience as a parent, teacher and consultant. Dr. Carol taught every grade level, from elementary school to college and is currently a private tutor, educational consultant and lecturer. Although "The Encyclopedia of Parenting from A-Z" stresses communication as the best means for establishing boundaries, Dr. Carol acknowledges the child's need for "Lap-Top Time." But her lap-top does not require a mouse or modem. It requires only a mom or dad, and includes hugs and kisses. "...lap-top time is best when surrounded by a parent's loving arms and tender words." This is also the place to begin a personal head-start reading program that will instill a strong love of reading to help assure children's success in school and beyond. "The Encyclopedia of Parenting From A-Z" provides a unique section devoted to literacy called "Cracking the Code." Dr. Carol gives parents effective yet simple tools to help children learn one of life's most important skills: reading. Recognizing that parents are the children's first teacher, and the pre-school years are important developmental years she offers tips that make teaching fun and effective. ###
Guide Book for all ages........2000-08-25
This book was written mostly as a guide for parents, but it is really for everyone who wants to be a better person. By following these life lessons all of us will be better students, better citizens in the community. and eventually better parents. Hopefully, we will leave the world a better place than we found it.
Book Description
Officially a part of the Luftwaffe, Germany's parachute units were organized into the 7th Flieger Division in July 1938 under General Kurt Student. In the German invasion of France and the Low Countries in 1940 the parachute units stunned the world and laid the basis for an airborne mystique that has endured to the present day.

Book Description
Abject Loyalty challenges the view that Irish nationalists were necessarily hostile to the British monarchy. During Queen Victoria's reign, royal visits to Ireland were in fact generally met with great enthusiasm. Indeed, the strength of the opposition of some Irish nationalists to the monarchy was a sign of the purchase that it seemed to have on the allegiance of many people within nationalist Ireland. By the 1880s, however, the monarchy had become the focus for British imperial identity in England and for the denial of constitutional legitimacy to those in Ireland who wished for home rule. It began to face increasing opposition in Ireland both because nationalist politicians feared its influence might reconcile Irish people to the Union with Britain and because enthusiasm for monarchy in Ireland was used to feed a British discourse which saw Ireland as a country that could be appeased by concessions short of home rule and which did not take nationalist demands! seriously.
The book traces Ireland's interaction with the British monarchy from King George III to Queen Elizabeth II but focuses on the reign of Queen Victoria. It deals with its topic on two levels. It explores Queen Victoria's interaction with Ireland and her influence on British policy towards Ireland. And it examines how Queen Victoria and monarchy were perceived in Ireland.
Whereas Queen Victoria's views and actions have previously been subject to historical analysis, no previous study has seriously explored how she was perceived in Ireland or the subtleties of nationalism's attitude towards monarchy. Abject Loyalty makes a significant and original contribution to the political and cultural history of Ireland and will be of interest to those concerned with understanding the historical development of Irish identity.
