An Original Architecture Book Worth the Money.......2005-01-08

"Diamond Ranch High School: Source Book in Architecture" is perhaps one of the best books to have if you want to know the process of which great projects come to be.

Divided into three sections, the first section is a documented transcript of Thom Mayne of Morphosis, critic Jeffrey Kipnis, and lecturer Todd Gannon during the Baumer Lecture Series at The Ohio State University. Mr. Kipnis and Mr. Gannon provide some of the best questions to Mr. Mayne - questions that many of us would actually want to ask Mr. Mayne. Likewise, Mr. Mayne's responses are eloquent and insightful. His honesty removes the aura created by his computer renderings and makes you realize that this is simply an individual who loves what he does.

The second section of the book documents the drawings that Morphosis developed for the Diamond Ranch High School. Let's face it - we are usually presented with either a project proposal or a professional finished photograph and drawings are typically excluded from any typical documentation.

The third section contains photos of the project under construction to the final construction photos.

From the Mayne's discussion, to the drawings, and to the photographs, you gain a valuable insight into the true design and development of 'Diamond Ranch High School' that other publications simply gloss over.

This series of books are simply one of the best in contemporary architectural writing and documentation today.

Great Resource for Morphosis Admirers.......2002-05-05

As an architect, I have followed Thom Mayne's work for a long period of time. I have collected most of his books and have always admired their production quality and most importantly, the depth of the work produced by this firm. They have been and will remain at the forefront of the architectural profession. Despite reading and studying Mayne's work and philosophies in other books, I have always been left unsatisfied, not knowing exactly how the firm works and how a project comes together within their office. The interview with Jeffery Kipnis and Todd Gannon at the front of the book enters into this territory, although I would have liked it to be much longer. The rest of the book is much like other Morphosis' books; full of beautiful sketches, computer renderings and drawings. Images walk the reader from schematic design through completion.

From his assumption of the Norfolk Virginian-Pilot's editorial helm in 1919 until his death in 1950, Louis Issac Jaffe served as one of the South's leading and most respected journalists. Prejudice he faced as a Jew created in him an abiding empathy with the downtrodden, and his World War I military service and subsequent Red Cross work deepened his sensitivity to injustice. Alexander Leidholdt's new biography maps the battlefield of intolerance and civil rights violations on which Jaffe fired his journalistic salvos and explores the complexities of a man who was poised to become a national spokesman for a better South.

Jaffe worked ceaselessly to advance racial understanding, successfully lobbying locally for black parks and beaches, black police, and a black college. A high point of Leidholdt's book is the account of Jaffe's attacks on mob justice, a stirring record of one writer's response to what he saw as inexcusable moral sluggishness in civil authorities. The Iosef Stalin tanks were the ultimate heavy tanks developed by the Soviet Union and were popularly called 'Victory tanks' due to their close association with the defeat of Germany in 1945. Yet in spite of their reputation, the Stalin tanks emerged from a troubled design, had a brief moment of glory in 1944 and 1945, and disappeared in ignominy after 1960. This title covers the events contributing to the Soviet Union’s need to design the new series, with particular reference to the unsuccessful KV series and the advent of a new generation of heavy German tanks including the Tiger. It also covers their development, operational history and myriad variants.

Excellent short history of Soviet heavy tanks.......2000-03-27

Steve Zaloga is an expert on Soviet Armored Fighting Vehicles. This is a well written study of the history of Soviet Heavy tanks. I particularly enjoyed reading and seeing the prototype tanks that never made it into production. There are many line drawings and text to help clarify some of the misconceptions of Soviet tank manufacture. I only wish that the cut away drawing were not cut in half by the pages. Can't have everything, but this is a very good primer, I definately recommend adding this to your collection.

It is an ambitious book. It draws on an impressively wide range of scholarly literature, from religious, family, demographic, economic, social, political and military history.

It ranges widely over Western European societies and their colonial offshoots from the sixteenth to the end of the nineteenth centuries (and beyond). It examines the complex impacts of demographic, economic, political, institutional and 'cultural' changes on patriarchal organisation, and the ways in which patriarchal understandings and practices mediated and shaped those changes, in institutions, and in everyday life.

It keeps a sharp eye out for similar tendencies across different situations and circumstances, for the unevenness of the developments it traces, and for the connections between between different aspects of social life, and between the different social and regional conditions which constitute 'uneven development'.

At the centre of its analysis are the sheer materiality of human existence and the ways in which the production of material life is conducted. But it is theoretically subtle and sophisticated, grafting onto its marxist heritage a qualified theoretical eclecticism and a concern with such things as the formation of particular personality characteristics in particular socio-political regimes.

It is roughly chronological in its overall organisation, but rather than a chronological narrative, it proceeds as what the author calls a 'patchwork' of 'case studies' to map important developments, to explore both what they have in common with what was happening elsewhere and their particularities and contingencies, and to note the diversity of conditions and practices across western societies. At the same time, it concerned to identify causes, and to make connections between seemingly disparate aspects and levels of social life.

The book is clearly written and well organised. I'd rate it as a useful book and important book. It is impressively scholarly. While it attempts synthesis it avoids any sort of singular, homogenising ('that's it in a nutshell') formula. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Recent advances in signal processing and remote sensing have highlighted the importance of bistatic radar systems for the purposes of environmental monitoring, surveillance, and tracking radar. The calibration of such systems has been problematic-much more so than similar monostatic systems, primarily as a result of the lack of reference objects suitable for calibrating at any given bistatic angle. This research deals with the problems of calibrating full-polarimetric laboratory-environment bistatic radar systems, including the lack of suitable calibration targets and procedures, and operational considerations such as alignment and mounting. Several popular bistatic calibration techniques are classified, evaluated, and comparisons are made between the relative merits of various calibration objects. The analysis addresses sensitivity to target alignment error, sensitivity to polarization impurity, and ease of implementation. Both theoretical concepts and practical considerations are discussed, based on measurements accomplished at the European Microwave Signature Laboratory (EMSL) of the Joint Research Center (JRC) in Ispra, Italy. Significant gains in co-polarized channel accuracy and cross- polarization purity are realized with calibrations that utilize the complete system distortion model and these conclusions are discussed in detail.

I'm sorry to see that the 1998 tide tables have slipped to 959,464th in sales rank. I'm sure this will improve as more and more people have an oportunity to read this fine book.
