Invaluable Reference.......2002-09-10
This is an invaluable reference. I've been searching for weeks for materials related to noise control in a residential setting. I've found only one "expert" in the yellow pages and he charges hundreds for his advice. This book provides all of the information he provided and more. Although, the editing isn't great and there are typos and other errors, the content is first-rate. For once, this book was exactly what I expected.

Wonderful book.......2007-05-15
I have often been accused of having too much imagination.
But this book made me say wow a couple of times, due to its usefulness and simplicity.
I have to read this book in little bits because before long I am jumping up and running to my drawing table because inspiration has struck,or some idea has been presented that I MUST explore furthur.
That is what I call a gem of a book.
Even nicer is that it is a book that anyone who does creative work or hobbies can use.
I dont give a 5 lightly, but I'm doing it for this book.
Inspired reading!.......2005-01-11
The Artist's Quest for Inspiration is a book that will appeal to artists at many different stages of their career and in most artistic fields. If you are creative at any level this is a title that will help you find new ways of being inspired.
The author offers many suggestions to help you break through any creative blocks such as: journal writing, working with other artists, meditation, and music... just to name a few techniques! Throughout The Artist's Quest for Inspiration you will find highlighted ideas for you to try. One of them that I like in particular goes like this:
`I think creative responses are helped by singing old songs. I know it can lift my mood. Even in private, singing can help you remember incidents from your past that might have drifted off to a corner of your mind's attic.'
This is NOT a how-to book with step-by-step instructions in using various media or lessons in perspective etc. However, this is a book that will draw on your true creativity and individual offerings to the world that will truly reflect what you have to offer.
The author has done a fabulous job in providing you with a multitude of `block' busters that will help you break through any creative barriers you may be suffering from. Even if you don't suffer from this problem The Artist's Quest for Inspiration is bound to provide you with even more energising ideas than you already have! The language is easy to understand and friendly.
I would recommend this book to anyone involved in a creative pursuit - particularly if you are looking for new ideas - but also for those of you looking for a fresh approach. I must admit that I don't suffer from a shortage of ideas, but this title certainly gave me a lot more to think about!
Not bad book.......2002-09-01
Book has interesting exercises. Many which I had done.
There is one GLARING mistake in this book
The publishers printed twice the last two chapters, index and bibliography. !
One in the proper place an the mistake is starts at page 235
...
I would repurchase it if Allworth press came out with a new
edition.
Recommended reading for the serious, practicing artist........2000-03-05
Working artist Peggy Hadden shares her secrets for overcoming artistic blocks, from meditation to exercises designed to release artistic expression. Her book Artist's Quest For Inspiration reveals insights on how creativity is awakened, covering subjects ranging from working with other artists to revisiting childhood and creating an inspirational work and play environment. Book Description
To muster the smart brigade of one hundred outhouses exhibited in this book, eight dedicated photographers headed by Londie Padelsky have fanned out over the boggy backways of our nation and rallied into service stalwart sentinels of every style and state of repair. Each redolent image in Outhouses: Images and Contemplations is ornamented by an aid to contemplation in wordswhether seasoned aphorism (Cicero), subtle arrière-pensée (La Fontaine), inverted innuendo (Swift), cutting couplet (Pope), or purgative panegyric (Roethke)all tastefully selected to gratify the large philosophico-poetic appetites that are awakened by the Littlest House on the Prairie.

Excellent if you like this sort of thing.......2006-12-18
I am a gastroenterologist, that is, a physician who specializes in stomach and intestinal diseases. I bought this as a book for the waiting room. It is a well executed work. Photography is very high quality. Nicely bound. There are little sayings on each page that are not very noteworthy. For me it was the novelty that led me to purchase it, and my patients do find it amusing. There is nothing encyclopedic about it, so calling it a survey is overselling it. It is really just a sample of good photography where the outhouse is the main subject in each photograph.

Gets funnier with every book.......2006-03-21
I loved the JLI when it was funny. Especially Blue & Gold. This series really picks up by the end of this collection and only gets better as it goes, reaching it's peak by the time Blue & Gold try to build a resort on Kooey Kooey Kooey! Ah wish they would just collect the entire series in a HC collection. I know I would buy it.
It's almost impossible to believe that Giffen and DeMatteis could put so many jokes without having to recycle them. Check out their latest book too: Formerly Known As the Justice League (5 Stars) and I Can't Believe It's Not The Justice League (3 Stars).
Worth it if you like your comics to be witty and funny.
JLA gets a sense of humor.......2005-07-08
Wow, the other reviewer just didn't get it.
In the mid 80s JLA came back with a bunch of second and third string super heroes, and they could only be viewed with a skewered and wry eye. These were funnybook heroes, being funny.
Giffen and DeMateis were masters of the quick wit and sometimes down right silliness that filled these pages. Aided by super star artist Kevin Maguire, who made every facial tick shine to the height of comic interpretation.
This was great stuff. I fell in love with this off pace series, which was a nice relief in the angst ridden 80s comics.
PIck up any of these issues and books for a good fun and often goofy time.

Book Description
The Zulu kingdom established by King Shaka was robust and self-sufficient, but royal rivalries and newly arrived white colonialists made it a bloody period that shaped the face of modern Africa. This much-deserved, detailed depiction of day-to-day combat during nine of the most influential battles--from Thuleka in 1838 through the Civil War to the breaking of the royal house--pulses with excitement. All the courage and horror of hand-to-hand fighting and strategic genius come through on every page.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Overview of Zulu Warfare.......2005-08-01
Ian Knight is probably the preeminent authority on Zulu History, and this is a fascinating account of a series of 10 different battles that occurred over the course of 70 years, featuring Zulus against the Boers, Zulus against the British, and Zulus against Zulus. Probably the best known Zulu battle is Rorkes' Drift, but that incident really deserves its own book, and Knight and other authors have already done so (see Ian Knight's "Campaign Series 42, Rorkes' Drift 1879", for a good overview, but he also has done a more thorough analysis of that battle in another book). If you want a more detailed study of the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 then there is no shortage of other good books to read, but in terms of the development and showcasing of Zulu warfare after Shaka and into the early 20th Century, then this is an excellent and exciting piece of work.
An introduction to the Zulu Wars.......2000-03-29
A useful and informative introduction to the Zulu wars. Several major battles are covered in depth, and the general trends of the war explained. Overall tactics for the Zulu Nation are discussed in some length, however the same treatment is not given to the British side. The reader is left with the overall impression that the main tactic of the Zulu Nation was to field vastly superior numbers, and without this there was little chance of victory. There is a lack of detail on the weapons and equipment and dress used by each side which would have been an important and interesting addition
Detailed descriptions, but ignores earlier wars........1999-11-01
An interesting and informative account of the Zulus' greatest battles is, unfortunately, not as comprehensive as it could have been. While Knight has, once again, done his homework (his accounts of the battles of Thukela and Blood River are vivid)there are some thrilling battles in earlier Zulu history which have been afforded little attention. For instance, the battle of kwaGqokli hill, which featured the young Shaka leading his men against the powerful Ndwandwe of Zwide kaLanga, lives in many an imagination as the first reckoning of the great Zulu empire. But while there are valid reasons not to include the aforementioned clash, the battle of izinDololwane hills, which saw Shaka, with the help of his white allies, shatter the powerful Ndwandwe kingdom once and for all, surely merits an inclusion. That aside, the book is typical of Knight: colourful, interesting, objective, factual.

Review by an outsider.......2007-09-18
I bought this book alongside a couple of others to grasp the Caucasus and the political context its people are living in today. I think this books offers a lot of historical background information and is a very pleasant read, despite its sometimes not so pleasant content. Like other Caucasus World books it provides a balances view and I regard this series the best source for information on the Caucasus. Clearly there is very little available on the subject, so I welcome these publications.
For me, the most interesting part is the way (supposedly) old ideas, like nationalism and religion, formed into new instruments to create a feeling of belonging to a single nation. For a person from Western Europe this in itself feels the words turned upside down, since Europe is removing all its internal borders and restrictions. Nationalism or religion are hardly a determining factor in our politics, whereas in the Caucasus these long suppressed ideas took the foreground.
Many of the described modern conflicts clearly have their origin in the context of the disintegration of the Soviet Union and all the uncertainties and volatile situations it created on the ground. But also the idea seems valid, that the Soviet Union instead of solving ethnic conflicts in effect froze them. When the Soviet Union melted away, the old conflicts reappeared.
This book is a good introduction to all the complexities of the region.
Impartial view on the Caspian Region.......2002-11-09
It is thorough and impartial review of events occured in the Caspian region. It highlights many problems which remained obscure due to the dominant view on the regional conflicts from Armenian perspective. The author draws attention to the role of regional powers, particularly, Russia in the Caucasus.
The author frequently visited the region and is aware of matters.
S. Cornell is trying to overcome his previous biases.......2002-08-18
Svante E. Cornell is an editor at the Central Asia & Caucasus Institute at SAIS, Washington, DC. His most recent book is pointed at a difficult goal of telling about all ethnic disputes in the Caucasus in one thick volume: from Abkhazia to Chechnya and Dagestan to Azerbaijan and Georgia. This book can serve as an introduction for those who do not really know what Caucasus is. However, its weak analytical profile and methodological errors prevent a reader to build a decent understanding of historical and political roots of the problems in the Caucasus.
The first shortcoming of the book is its Caspian bias: you open the book and smell the oil; or, you do not even open it-you just look at the picture on the cover. With that it becomes obvious what you are dealing with. This text belongs to one of those aimed-to-be-sexy revisionist narratives, which explains Caucasus' past and present from an unjustifiably narrow perspective of the Caspian oil politics, thus missing a wealth of other important factors affecting regional developments beyond the purportedly existing "Eurasian Great Game." However, in contrast to a handful of academic charlatans also scavenging on the Caspian theme, such as Brenda Shaffer of the Harvard Caspian Oil Program or Zeyno Baran of CSIS, Cornell tries to argue out his points more thoroughly, not just expressing opinions and leaving them unattached.
The second weakness of the book is in a methodological fallacy known as "ex-post analysis." Cornell's explains events that have happened as if they would have happened that way necessarily. Because of his apparent lack of immediate experience with monitoring the Caucasus' politics, the author takes the reality as it stands now, for granted, and then tries to create backward-oriented causal links that would unavoidably lead to the logic of today's status quo. Bits and pieces that are missing the author simply concocts. Hardly surprising, Cornell is easily misled by revisionist propaganda that is being emitted from the Caucasus's warring camps. That is where his methodological blindness goes bad indeed. For instance, Cornell naively sticks to an Azerbaijani propaganda piece, invented in Baku in 1995-98 to justify earlier massacres of Armenians, that, ostensibly, there were unreported pogroms against Azerbaijanis in Armenia in 1988. Not only this claim cannot be backed with facts, it is theoretically impossible: the still-omnipresent Soviet police-state (1988! not 1991!) would have promptly taken easily discernible action should something have indeed taken place around that time. But Cornell has little idea about what the USSR was in the beginning of 1988, as he is not a specialist in this field but comes from "Turkish Studies" (a pseudo-academic discipline invented during the Cold War to lure the Turks into the bed with NATO by a promise to whitewash their unpalatable history). This brings forward Cornell's third slip-up: his lack of understanding of the logic of Soviet ethno-federal institutions in the way they became a single important factor that triggered conflicts in various parts of the collapsing empire. In this regard, a good read is Rogers Brubaker's "Nationalism Reframed: Nationhood and the National Question in the New Europe," also found at Amazon.com.
And, finally, the forth problem with the book is a host of factual errors that cry out from virtually every page. Well, Cornell tried to pack years and years of Caucasus' conflict history into one big narrative about all regional controversies, and that is what he gets. Some of Cornell's "findings" are hilariously ludicrous. For example, he declares Hasan-Jalal Vakhtangian (a 13th century Armenian prince in Karabakh) as "Muslim Armenian, at least by name." Are you, Mr. Cornell, really clueless that Hasan-Jalal, described by his contemporaries as "the man of Christ", is buried in the vestibule of his own St. John church at Gandzasar. Well, most Azerbaijanis and all Central Asians now sport last names that have Arabic roots wrapped up in the Russian verbal format, with the Slavic "-ov" ending; would you claim that the Central Asia and Azerbaijan are populated by "Russian Arabs, at least by name???"
The impression is that Cornell never visited the region he describes. Nevertheless, "Small Nations and Great Powers" herald about a significant progress experienced by the author as he slowly transforming from a simplistically minded journalist into a scholar.
Book Description
What is the proper relation between the scientific worldview and other parts or aspects of human knowledge and experience? Can any science aim at "complete coverage" of the world, and if it does, will it undermine--in principle or by tendency--other attempts to describe or understand the world? Should morality, theology and other areas resist or be protected from scientific treatment? Questions of this sort have been of pressing philosophical concern since antiquity. The Proper Ambition of Science presents ten particular case studies written by prominent philosophers, looking at how this problem has been approached from the ancient world right up to the present day.
