Book Description

Open: New Designs for Public Space puts forth the simple proposition that new public spaces need not be the banal leftovers of design neglect. Open showcases the best recent public projects from some of the world's most talented designers, including Elizabeth Diller and Ricardo Scofidio, Craig Dykers, Peter Eisenman, Zaha Hadid, Walter Hood, UN Studio, Norman Foster, Weiss/Manfredi, and Will Alsop. More than 300 images, many commissioned for this publication, illustrate a range of projects from emmorials to new types of urban plazas and parks.
Essays by Raymond Gastil, Linda Pollak, and Zoe Ryan, argue that the most successful urban spaces are those that combine large-scale operations and small-scale experiences, major infrastructure with recreation and culture, and grand civic events with intimate daily interaction.

1 out of 5 stars Before praising a project, live near it........2004-07-17

I haven't read this book, except for some excerpts. However, I've read a number of pieces on how marvelous Roppongi Hills is. The people who write these pieces don't have much first-hand experience. I live beside Roppongi Hills. They've built a massive outdoor speaker system right across the street from some existing housing. That's turned a whole neighborhood into a noise pollution hellhole.

Take these puff pieces with a grain of salt.

5 out of 5 stars Public Space: The Final Frontier.......2004-05-19

OPEN: new designs for public space proves that public space has a rich and exciting future. With inspiring projects from six continents, this attractive volume casts a wide net that includes both traditional forms of public spaces (plazas and squares) and exciting hybrids, such as temporary installations that can transform unused spaces into inviting community resources. The essays and interviews also present architects and designers acting as facilitators as much as form makers. In addition to architects, landscape architects and planners, the volume is enriched by contributions from artists, graphic and industrial designers as well as critics and thinkers.

5 out of 5 stars The source book on Airbrushing.......2003-07-14

I own quite a number of books on airbrushing, some very good, some average. This book is without a doubt THE definitive book about ALL aspects on airbrushing. It is an outstanding book in every respect.
It covers more aspects of airbrushing than any other book I have seen, it is superbly produced in full colour and the clarity of text and photography is as good as it gets. Do I sound enthusiastic, you can bet on that. If there was one book that I was restricted to on this subject, I would not hesitate in recomending this book, it is just so good.
I would recomend this book as THE BEST BOOK ON AIRBRUSHING YOU CAN BUY!, you will not be disapointed.

5 out of 5 stars BEST! Basic Airbrush Book........2007-06-07

I've read seven airbrush books in the 4 and 5 star range. This was book number seven and by far the best book on simple airbrushing techniques. The frisket cutting and blending exercises are precise and inexpensive to reproduce. Getting into airbrushing is expensive and it is difficult to find classes or good books. This book will get you started on airbrush painting technique in an hour or two of reading time. Sometimes the cheapest book is the best!

        5 out of 5 stars A beginners must.......2003-01-08

Just starting or thinking about airbrushing? This book is a good place to begin. The first third of the book is dedicated to introducing and explaining differences in airbrushes and materials needed in an easy and understandable way. The second third helps the artist get comfortable with basic techniques and the last third provides some exercises benificial to further development. This book is an easy, inexpensive way to discover airbrushing.

4 out of 5 stars A good book to get you started........2000-03-30

I studied technical illustration many years ago and wanted to try airbrushing as a hobby. I think that this book covers the basics well and provides useful exercises with emphasis on the shading of objects. Well worth the price.

Fashion photography in the '90s can be roughly divided into the glamour and grunge schools, with the former drawing much of its inspiration from Helmut Newton and the commercial photographers of the '50s, and the latter dipping into the world of "art" photography for its references. In Fashion: Photography of the Nineties, edited by Camilla Nickerson (senior fashion editor at Vogue) and Neville Wakefield, the connection between the worlds of art and fashion is explored in a totally pictoral manner, dispensing completely with introductory essays or explanations of the choices of photographs and photographers presented. This approach is tremendously effective: the juxtaposition of full-page images from such fashion industry mainstays as Ellen Von Unwerth, Mario Sorrenti, and Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin with photographers known more for their interest in shocking, art-gallery images, such as Nan Goldin and Richard Prince illustrates well the extreme influence that such artists (as well as Larry Clark, who is not represented here) have had on commercial photography. This beautifully printed volume offers an imagistic history of the low-rent eroticism of the contemporary fashion-photo scene. While this look has been criticized as glamorizing drugs, in fact it seems here, when set alongside the overly made-up, perfectly posed models (without fat or pores) of the glamour scene, to provide a more realistic and attainable vision of beauty, and one that is no less compelling or erotic for it's portrayal of splotchy skin or imperfect forms.

              3 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2006-09-29

Although this book did provide a handful of interesting photos of Stella Tenant and Kate Moss, overall, its not worth the buy if you're looking for a real 90s fashion focus. On the whole, the book is filled with strange images of nudity that hinge on vulgar and strange. For that reason, I wasn't impressed with this book. Having come of age when 90's photography was at its height, I was disappointed to not see some of the more glamourous photography of that period - the true dark grunginess of the time - one of my favorite parts of the 90's. I wish the book had shown more photos of models than of the miscellaneous men and women in the buff. If that's what you're looking for - I would recommend Mario Testino's many fashion photography books, more colorful and fun than Fashion: Photography Of The Nineties.

5 out of 5 stars Grunge is unfairly maligned, and I believe this proves it.......1999-11-27

I LOVED the whole grunge,"heroin chic" movement-NOT for its drug connotations, but because FINALLY the spackled-on make-up,the foo foo clothes, the ridiculous glamour lighting,it all ceased. Here you've got a rare, gorgeous pic of Stella Tennant WITH her nose ring(she looked SO much better with it!),by Paolo Roversi no less. You've got a vaguely punkish Rosemary Ferguson,by Corrine Day.Other major photographers are also represented-Juergen Teller,Craig McDean,Mario Sorrenti(Rachel Williams with raccoon eyes,a belly-button ring...and little else;)....the list is endless, really. This is a really COOL book,it is the very DEFINITION of cool. And it may change your mind about grunge!

1 out of 5 stars Unorthodox and avant-garde but mainly depressing.......1999-08-29

If this is photography of fashion in the nineties, give me the eighties. Some of the photos are memorable; a few are excellent, but most are uninspiring, often approaching tragic. Joy and fashion are obviously not meant to co-exist, at least in this book.

5 out of 5 stars This is a book of educible, suductive images! A must have!.......1998-12-01

This is a book to which people react! Blurring the lines between fashion photography, "Art" photography, sex, and gender, this book is an articulate and provocative essay on the scarcely delinated state of beauty, style, and sexuality; art, commercialism, and culture.

              I highly recommend it.

The Langridge Brother's brilliant, surreal comic book Zoot is edited, streamlined and compiled in this handy trade paperback.
Zoot Suite: Bizarre tales of Spine chilling pumice stones, Heart Wrenching French lessons and a mysterious car that lurks just off panel is some of the most innovative comics work published in the past decade.
Roger Lagridge's tight, yet fluid pen and ink work is a must see for all fans of the medium. Here's a guy who creates real worlds, real space. While more and more comic artists turn to photo's and computers to do all the work, Langridge remains an example of how AMAZING draftsmanship will win out over tricks every time. Rick Geary fans should check this out especially, as it's right up your alley.
Andrew Lagridge's stories and characters are so off the beaten track they're in a place of their own. Brilliant humor based on the absurd, the mundane and everything in between.
Really, I couldn't say enough good things about this book. While it may not be for everyone, Zoot Suite will remain a perpetual favorite, a must have for collectors who value innovation, humor and skill.

                        Book Description

Author, Dr. Earl Henslin, explores how the father-daughter relationship affects the adult daughter. Father-daughter relationships damaged by abuse, betrayal and abandonment can be healed and reconnected through understanding and forgiveness. "You Are Your Father's Daughter" is a book for adult daughters (and fathers) who want to heal or improve the father-daughter connection. It helps readers understand that a daughter's relationship with her father--positive or painful--affects who she is today.

Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Tony Horwitz returned from years of traipsing through war zones as a foreign correspondent only to find that his childhood obsession with the Civil War had caught up with him. Near his house in Virginia, he happened to encounter people who reenact the Civil War--men who dress up in period costumes and live as Johnny Rebs and Billy Yanks. Intrigued, he wound up having some odd adventures with the "hardcores," the fellows who try to immerse themselves in the war, hoping to get what they lovingly term a "period rush." Horwitz spent two years reporting on why Americans are still so obsessed with the war, and the ways in which it resonates today. In the course of his work, he made a sobering side trip to cover a murder that was provoked by the display of the Confederate flag, and he spoke to a number of people seeking to honor their ancestors who fought for the Confederacy. Horwitz has a flair for odd details that spark insights, and Confederates in the Attic is a thoughtful and entertaining book that does much to explain America's continuing obsession with the Civil War.

                        Book Description

When prize-winning war correspondent Tony Horwitz leaves the battlefields of Bosnia and the Middle East for a peaceful corner of the Blue Ridge Mountains, he thinks he's put war zones behind him. But awakened one morning by the crackle of musket fire, Horwitz starts filing front-line dispatches again this time from a war close to home, and to his own heart.

Propelled by his boyhood passion for the Civil War, Horwitz embarks on a search for places and people still held in thrall by America's greatest conflict. The result is an adventure into the soul of the unvanquished South, where the ghosts of the Lost Cause are resurrected through ritual and remembrance.

In Virginia, Horwitz joins a band of 'hardcore' reenactors who crash-diet to achieve the hollow-eyed look of starved Confederates; in Kentucky, he witnesses Klan rallies and calls for race war sparked by the killing of a white man who brandishes a rebel flag; at Andersonville, he finds that the prison's commander, executed as a war criminal, is now exalted as a martyr and hero; and in the book's climax, Horwitz takes a marathon trek from Antietam to Gettysburg to Appomattox in the company of Robert Lee Hodge, an eccentric pilgrim who dubs their odyssey the 'Civil Wargasm.'

Written with Horwitz's signature blend of humor, history, and hard-nosed journalism, Confederates in the Attic brings alive old battlefields and new ones 'classrooms, courts, country bars' where the past and the present collide, often in explosive ways. Poignant and picaresque, haunting and hilarious, it speaks to anyone who has ever felt drawn to the mythic South and to the dark romance of the Civil War.

5 out of 5 stars Confederate in the Attic.......2007-10-15

Just started reading the book thus far it is entertaining and delightful. I look forward to my quiet evening reading time everyday. It amazes me how
we continue to get Civil War info. from these wonderful writers.

5 out of 5 stars "Stonewall" Jackson's arm and other Civil War minutia.......2007-09-21

Simply a fun read. If you are a civil war buff like me you will enjoy reading this John Stosselesque investigative book of Civil War facts, minutia, and why Confederate esprit de corps lives on 142 years after Lee's surrender at Appomattox. Mr. Horwitz writes his book as a travelogue through the Civil War South. He recounts his travels as he meets new and interesting people and places, and how they still view the War between the States, as the Civil War is known in the South, as an ongoing struggle. He breaks down the book in chapters pertaining to the Southern states he visited.
The book is full of funny, sad, and informative facts like where and when was the first shot of the Civil War actually fired? And No, it was NOT Fort Sumter. But most important was his analysis of the continuing, living spirit of the Civil War South of 1861-1865. It lives today in a variety of ways that Mr. Horowitz points out and discusses.
All in all a must book for Civil War buffs of all kind. A good solid read, well written and factual. Not a tactics or war strategy manual of unit names and engagements, but rather a human interest book of who and what modern day Dixie is and why it lives on today in Southern people, places and things. I recommend it highly.

1 out of 5 stars yet another batch of anti-southern stereotypes rehashed.......2007-07-17

I bought this book on the reccomendation of a fellow civil war buff. I was hoping for some fresh insights on the subject of the lost cause and it's continued effect on our (southern) lives. Instead it is a collection of overblown, trite, highly condescending, negative, hateful fiction. I have lived in the south/southwest my entire life (44 yrs) and I have never encountered anyone remotely resembling the ignorant, racist, borderline psychopaths that the author claims to have found on almost every street corner south of Mason-Dixon. This book is not what I expected. I will avoid further works of fiction by Mr. Horwitz.

5 out of 5 stars New South and Old South.......2007-07-08

Tony Horwitz inadvertently sees Confederate Civil War reenactors near his Virginia home which launches him into an adventure across the South, attending reenactments but also comparing the New South to the Old South. He found out that some things have really changed, and some things have hardly changed at all. He looks into race relations, modern Confederate sympathizers, the Confederate flag controversy, and also gives a great history lesson on many parts of the Civil War, throwing in a lot of trivia that I had not read before. The Civil War continues to be a part of a lot of people's daily lives in the Deep Deep South and Horwitz writes with depth, understanding, and a welcome sense of humor. Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Well, the Civil War/War of Northern Aggression/War for State's Rights/Whatever Is Still Being Fought!.......2007-03-27

As a Southerner and lifelong American Civil War buff, I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Tony Horwitz' account of traveling the various Southern states and to get an account of the war from mainly the Southern view. While not an advocate of the South's position, he did seem to be respectful of how some Southerners viewed the war over 140 years later after the war ended.

Horwitz traveled Virginia, North and South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky and parts of Florida, Louisiana, Texas, and Arkansas to various Civil War sites and to talk with people on their thoughts of what the war meant to them. While he finds pockets of people who still fight the war, he is appalled that most people do not know or really care to know what happened during 1861-1865.

                        Among the highlights:

                        1. How he became interested in the war.
                        2. His trip to Montgomery, Alabama and the irony of the exhibits on the Civil Rights and the First Capital of the Confederacy.
                        3. His "Wargasm" trip with Robert Hodge (the character in the absolutely hilarious photo on the book's cover) through several Virginia sites in a matter of a few days.
                        4. Watching Civil War reenactments at Gettysburg and other battlefields.
                        5. Touring the Civil War prison in Salisbury NC.

The narrative is smooth, interesting, and flows freely from chapter to chapter. As mentioned earlier, I am a lifelong Civil War buff and was able to visualize several of the battlefields I had visited that Horwitz mentioned in his book. I also enjoyed his insights as a Jew.

A great book to read about how some people still fight and view the war. My only complaint was some of the saucy language. Still, a great read.

                        Highly recommended. Read and enjoy!

                                          Book Description

Syndicated columnist Stanley Crouch teams up with noted journalist Playthell Benjamin for this thought-provoking look back at The Souls of Black Folk, the epochal, prophetic work by the great African-American intellectual W.E.B. DuBois. In that classic book of essays, first published 100 years ago, DuBois took an autobiographical approach as he reflected on many facets of black life following the Emancipation Proclamation, and boldly challenged the opinions of his esteemed contemporary, Booker T. Washington. Presented in an attractive, streamlined paperback edition with a new introduction, Reconsidering the Souls of Black Folk is a fitting tribute to a literary and sociological triumph on the 100th anniversary of its publication.

5 out of 5 stars Smart, but not Stuffy.......2003-10-07

This is a very worthwhile read. As an introduction to the work of W.E.B. Du Bois or for someone like me who's read "The Souls of Black Folk" as well as David Levering Lewis's "Biography of a Race," this book is valuable because it personalizes some of Du Bois's scholarship and puts it in an interesting context. The scope is not limited to "The Souls of Black Folk" however, it's much broader than that. Benjamin provides a thorough overview of Du Bois's entire body of work while Crouch contributes some "speed and footwork as cold as a well-digger's posterior," to quote Ralph Ellison's prologue on invisibility. This is a smart book but not a dry academic work; it draws upon: current events, history, contemporary fiction, music, sports, everything. I've read it twice already and have referred back to it numerous times. I've also checked out a couple of additional books based on the authors' recommendations, like Roger Wilkins' "Jefferson's Pillow" and James Weldon Johnson's autobiography, "Along This Way." Benjamin especially, lays out the whole legacy of Du Bois's influence in sociology and political science, discussing important works by Harold Cruse and many others.

"The chords of unintended consequences were subjected to some extended blues choruses in which the tragic optimism of American democracy wafted through the atmosphere, setting loose enough building wind to blow the candles off of the table of slavery and burn down the house." Shelby Foote could not have put it any better than that! This is clearly some inspired writing by Crouch, and I've read a few of his books (plus all of his JazzTimes columns). He contributes only 70 of the book's 250 pages though, so instead of "trading twelves," the format is more like trading eighteens and sixes, but he says a lot in those six bars. Anyway, they might have acheived a more equal distribution by editing out some of Mr. Benjamin's attacks on other public intellectuals. He skewers public intellectuals the way Queequeg skewers sperm whales. The other suggestion I have is that Running Press might consider springing for an editor at more than minimum wage.

A couple of highlights for me are: Playthell Benjamin's extraordinary ten-page musicological analysis which traces strains of anti-Semitism in German culture to the music of Richard Wagner (terrible man, terrific music). Benjamin comes as close as he's going to get to chiding Du Bois for not making the connection, during his student days in Berlin, between the Teutonic "Strong Man" of his Harvard baccalaureate address and the Teutonic Strong Man of Wagner's pre-Christian operatic epic. I was also impressed by Stanley Crouch's presentation of what he sees as the African American legacy of intellectual opposition (of which Du Bois is a part) in the process of redefining (or "purifying," as he calls it) the Enlightenment ideals contained in the founding documents. Crouch provides excerpts from the writing of Enlightenment thinkers like Voltaire as well as the correspondence between Benjamin Banneker and Thomas Jefferson. My description doesn't do it justice, but it's a brilliant analysis.

This is an opinionated book. Unlike Mr. Benjamin, I appreciate Gerald Early's writing and I also like "The Future of the Race," a Gates/West collaboration which includes a brilliant Cornel West essay about Du Bois and the "twilight" of the Age of Europe (1492-1945). Although largely positive, it is somewhat critical of Du Bois, as is Stanley Crouch here. But there seems to be a lot of common ground between Benjamin and Crouch on: the conception of the talented tenth, the towering achievement of Du Bois in general, and the importance of "The Souls of Black Folk" in particular. Their differences seem to lie mostly in Crouch's criticism of Du Bois's sociological bent, his vulnerability to Marxist theory, Pan-Africanism, and his ultimate position as a somewhat tragic figure. I really don't know the answer but I learned a lot from reading this. Everyone I know who's read this has dug it. Great book.

1 out of 5 stars Poor centennial reconsideration.......2003-03-23

The Souls of Black Folk is an American classic. Written before he turned 30, Dubois deals deftly with the central issues of not only the beginning of the twentieth century (black leadership, the color line, southern politics, reconstruction, the talented tenth, etc.) but the end as well. When I heard that Benjamin and Crouch were going to put something together in honor of it I awaited my copy with anticipation.

After having read it, at least I can say the cover is really nice.

This book was not a chore to read...the way Benjamin skewers a number of "public intellectuals" is funny at times. And though I seldom agree with Crouch on anything, I find that he has serious skills as a wordsmith. But the central problem is that the work is poorly edited (particularly Benjamin's contribution), and there is no way that this does the original justice. It's better than THE FUTURE OF THE RACE (a similar attempt by Gates and West), but that's not really saying much. Skip it and reread the original.

                                              Book Description

The beauty industry is now a multinational, multi-million dollar business. In recent years its place in contemporary culture has altered hugely as salons have become not simply places to have your hair cut or your nails done, but increasingly sites of physical and even spiritual therapy. In this fascinating and nuanced study, Paula Black strips away many popular assumptions about the beauty industry, including the one that says it exploits people's insecurity by projecting an illusory beauty myth. The interviews in this book--both with the beauty industry's workers and its clients--reveal a far more complex and interesting picture.
