    Book Description

Features Most Recent Built Work by Internationally Respected Architect.

Richard Rogers is head of an internationally respected architectural practice responsible for many landmark buildings around the world. He is best known for such pioneering buildings as the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris (with Renzo Piano), Lloyd's of London and the Millennium Dome, London. The Richard Rogers Partnership was recently commissioned to expand the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center and design `Tower 3' on the site of the World Trade Center, both in New York City.

RICHARD ROGERS COMPLETE WORKS: VOLUME THREE by Kenneth Powell, features the work of the Richard Rogers Partnership from 1994-2005. The book features over 48 projects and competitions, looking at the most recent period of the practice. It is the third in a series of books on the practice, picking up from Volume Two that was published in 2001.

This book features the realized and unrealized projects of the last ten years, such as Greenwich Peninsula and the Millennium Dome, London, a school near Kyoto, the transformation of a Barcelona bullring into a major entertainment complex, master plans for Wembley, London, and Florence, Madrid Barajas Airport and London Heathrow's Terminal 5, as well as a new library for Birmingham and London's first Maggie's Centre.

The book is prefaced with a general introduction about the office, which brings the story of the practice up to date. Essays by architecture critic Kenneth Powell examine the impact of Richard Rogers in the political arena, particularly his chairmanship of the Urban Task Force and his work as advisor on architecture and urbanism to the mayors of London and Barcelona. He also discusses the continuing growth of the practice both at home and abroad and the impact of a new generation of talent rising to the foreground.

    Book Description

With this celebration of luminosity and color, artists can see how to use acrylics to catch light, capture mood, and build atmosphere. The inspiration and instructions come from John Hammond, one of the most successful painters in acrylics today. He uses more than 100 of his own paintings—some shown in various stages—to illustrate the techniques and reveal the many possibilities of this flexible and increasingly popular medium. As well as presenting an overview of materials and methods specific to acrylics, Hammond addresses issues of composition, color, and texture. He deals with working on location and discusses a wide variety of themes, including: Water, Boats and Beaches; City Views; Mediterranean Light; and Figures in Light and Shade.

5 out of 5 stars Bring Your Paintings to Life.......2007-03-31

I just received this book and already I can see how the techniques described and displayed will greatly improve the "look" I'm going after. An artist friend saw the book and barely wanted to give it back after thumbing through just a few pages. This book is BEAUTIFULLY illustrated with the talented Mr. Hammond's artwork, but his narrative is so clear and concise that you know his good influences will show up in your own work and improve your own style. This is not a book for beginners, but intermediates will gain so much more and even old pro's can incorporate techniques that will help bring paintings to life through light!

5 out of 5 stars I've Been Looking for this Book!.......2006-05-31

I am an artist and painting teacher working in oils, which I love. But, increasingly, I have students who want to paint in acrylics. There aren't that many books out there on the subject, but this clearly explains how to paint in acrylics and achieve the fine art look of oils. It goes beyond, and shows what acrylics can do that oils can't. So, now rather than think there are two mediums, watercolor and oil with acrylics somewhere far below - I now see acrylics as a third medium with it's own advantages and possibilities. This book covers all of the basics that a good book or teacher covers ... color, temperature, value, edges and design. "Capturing Light in Acrylics" should be on every acyrlic painter's shelf ... and maybe the oil painter's and watercolorist's, too.

4 out of 5 stars Very well presented.......2005-10-14

I was delighted to look over the book. It is well written, beautifully illustrated, clear to use. It ranks very highly in my estimation.

5 out of 5 stars STARK AND HORRIFIC TALE.......2005-09-21

"Deep Sleeper" is one of the most entertaining and enthralling stories I've read in a long time. Written by Phil Hester with glorious black & white art by Mike Huddleston, "Deep Sleeper" is a Lovecraftian Dream Cycle-style tale of man's existence and what lies beyond existence. Cole Gibson is haunted by strange dreams and has been for years. He's a struggling writer, trying to make ends meet for his family while his wife pressures him to find a more stable way of earning a living.

Encountering a spiritualist, Yogi-like monk named Ramman, shows Cole that he can leave his body and explore another world in his dreams. But Ramman's motives are hardly benevolent. Ramman has existed for centuries, harvesting souls to use as fuel for a monstrous device that will allow him to penetrate the barrier of existence and become a God. But he needs to harness Cole's power for the device and eventually forces his hands by allowing one of his servants to steal Cole's body while he is out of it. He threatens Cole's family unless he agrees to help. Aiding Ramman in his plot is The Dervish, a demonic entity who is the very aspect of pure violence and hate who seeks to kill all life.

Cole is also threatened by Jailer Monks who use their bodies to imprison demons and tap into their power. They oppose Ramman and do not intend to let Cole help him in his plot to attain divinity. The dream world is filled with a multitude of other perils including the monstrously tentacled Harvesters, and the Vacants who are souls who've lost their own bodies and seek to steal the bodies of other travelers. Cole must now figure out just why the forces of good and evil are fighting over him. What power does he possess and can he harness it in time to save his family and all existence?

"Deep Sleeper" works on many levels: a drama, a horror, and a look at man's existence and how everything is real and everything has meaning, no matter how little it may seem. While Cole ventures into this strange, dreamscape world, at the core is still an everyday guy facing the same problems that we all face, day in and day out. The central theme seems to be to appreciate life in all its forms and with all its many quirks. Huddleston's eclectic art, with his ingenious use of zip-a-tone and surrealism, set a dark, moody tone to the story and made this one a fast page-turner. The book comes with sketch and cover galleries as additional bonus features.

                      Book Description

Winner of the 2003 American Society of Journalists and Authors' June Roth Memorial Award for Health and Medical Books. An authoritative book with new lifesaving strategies for those at risk and those already diagnosed.

Lung cancer kills more women than breast cancer, more men than prostate cancer—because it's usually found too late. Claudia Henschke's groundbreaking research on early diagnosis, published in The Lancet, made headlines worldwide. Now, for the first time, she offers specific recommendations based on her latest findings: who needs to be checked, where to be tested, and what to expect. Dr. Henschke and coauthor Peggy McCarthy, a leading patient advocate, provide up-to-the-minute information on diagnosis, treatment, and survival, accompanied by inspiring words from survivors.

The book describes how the lungs work and how cancer develops. Questionnaires pinpoint risk factors (including past as well as current smoking) and the sometimes surprising symptoms, like back pain or swollen fingertips, that can signal a problem. Henschke and McCarthy explain how to remain healthy, active, and pain-free during and after treatment. They also address emotional and practical concerns, such as coping with guilt and dealing with insurance.

When my mom was diagnosed with Lung Cancer, I didn't know enough about it. I purchased several books on lung cancer but found this one easy to read, direct and to the point. This book helped me understand when the Oncologist talked about the stage of mom's cancer and the options available. Not only did this book give me a clearer overall picture of lung cancer, it is an awesome resourcetool and assisted me in the proper questions to ask the doctor. I recommend this book to anyone who has just been diagnosed or has family or a friend who has.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent comprehensive discussions of treatment options.......2005-09-15

This book champions the use of lung scans, for those at high risk of developing lung cancer, BEFORE symptoms appear - scans that radically and dramatically increase the odds of surviving this dreaded disease. While fully aware of the chance for false positives and their consequences, Henschke provides compelling reasons for utilizing this technology anyway. The book also consists of a thorough review of such topics as lung health, lung cancer and its development, treatment and diagnostic options in addition to lung scans, recovery tips, and alternative methodologies. This is a terrific reference source for people such as former smokers who are doing what they can to avoid developing lung cancer and who also want to maximize their odds for BEATING lung cancer should they develop it anyway.

5 out of 5 stars The Book To Have By Your Side.......2005-04-06

All about lung cancer for the layperson. This book is a must-read for current and former smokers. About 25% of adult Americans still smoke even after years of learning that it is a very deadly habit. This is because the nicotine in tabacco is highly addictive. Sadly over 80% of lung cancer is caused by smoking. The human body is just not designed to handle all of the dread toxins that smoking puts into the lungs and the rest of the body. This is one of the most deadly forms of human cancer. This book is a valuable resource explaining both the challenges and choices faced by a lung cancer sufferer and his/her family.

My mother was recently diagnosed with Stage IV Lung Cancer and this book has been by our sides the whole time. I was quite impressed with the book's clarity of details and "understandability". So often , information in books regarding illnesses of this magnitude can clutter and confuse the mind, this book set me straight. We were able to understand the physicians during various appointments and we were able to ask good questions. Knowledge allowed us a little bit of control in a very out of control situation, and I believe this book helped tremendously.

                        Book Description

Lung cancer is primarily a disease of well-developed affluent countries. It is by far the most common cancer in men, and is poised to overtake breast cancer as the most common cancer in women. Yet, although it is common, preventable, and sometimes curable, very little information is available about what happens when you get it - which is when accessible information is most needed. In a clear, non-emotive style, this revised and updated new edition provides the answers to the questions patients with lung cancers or those involved with them are likely to ask. The first section describes the causes (and includes a chapter on stopping smoking), diagnosis, and progression of the disease. There follows a section on the curative and symptomatic treatments available for the different types of lung cancer; and the third section, new for this edition, discusses the future prospects for the disease and its treatment. Also included are a glossary, a list of further reading, and an extensive list of addresses of organizations which can provide help and advice.

My father was recently diagnosed with lung cancer. This book was very helpful in helping us understand the staging, the options, and the possible treatments. Although it covered a lot of the same ground as the American Cancer Society Web site, which is extremely helpful, it also covered some other information.

                                        Book Description

Friedrich von Boetticher was Germany’s only military attaché accredited to the United States between the world wars. As such, he was Germany’s official military observer in the capital of the nation whose potential as an ally of those powers arrayed against Adolf Hitler in the 1930s might have given the dictator pause in any predatory plans he harbored against his neighbors. Though von Boetticher produced a rich and detailed commentary on military and political affairs in Washington in the eight years prior to the outbreak of war between Germany and the United States in 1941, he was nonetheless accused after the war of misjudging America’s productive potential and misleading Hitler with overly optimistic reports. As Alfred M. Beck points out, what he actually told German authorities in Berlin is strikingly different from what his detractors later claimed. Von Boetticher “permits a glimpse into the sociology of a conservative officer caste at once assailed by the politics of a regime and the impossibilities imposed on it, its weaknesses in resisting its evils, and its eventual failure to present an alternative to National Socialism’s illusory attractions.”

A loyal German, von Boetticher had strong ties to America. His mother was American-born, he spoke English fluently, and he was enamored of American military history. He was also anti-Semitic and believed that “Jewish wire-pullers” had undue influence over the U.S. government and its policies. His professional ties to U.S. Army officers in the War Department were so strong—supplying them, for example, with details on German air strength and operations during the Battle of Britain in 1940—that they survived until August 1941 and long after the German ambassador himself had been recalled. Torn between his duty to Germany (though the Nazi regime had attempted to harm his son) and his deep affection for America, von Boetticher stood among the broad middle range of German officials who were neither perpetrator nor victim.

                                          Book Description

Edwards' biographical novella of Howard Rinehart traces the restless, nomadic, and sometimes tormented life of one of America's pioneer giants in the fields of aviation and exploration. Following his subject's career from his early days in Dayton and Brazil to his tragic suicide outside a Hattiesburg, Mississippi boardinghouse, the author portrays Rinehart as a man increasingly divorced by age and ill-health from his earlier pursuit of adventure and alarmingly out-of-step, not only with his homeland's political and social institutions in general, but with the U.S. aeronautical community in particular.
