I love the Edition DETAIL's series of Construction Manuals. These books have taken some of the examples from their wonderful magazines series but is much more comprehensive. It covers the history of the materials, construction methods, material properties, example of projects built recently (within the past 10 yrs) and drawings of the enlarged details precisely and clearly labled. The price is a bit steep but I believe the book is well worth the price because you'll have a hard time finding books like these (concentrated on details) on the market (if you did please share the titles with us). One drawback on books like these is there's a danger the construction methods and details demonstrated in the book could become outdated as the years pass on. Another thing I would like to point out particular to the Roof Construction Manual is the book only covers pitched roof (otherwise I would have given it five stars).

Well worth the price.......2005-09-14

One in a series of indispensible DETAIL Construction Manuals, Roof Construction covers a broad range of roof types from modern built-up and tensile roofs to traditional shake and thatched roofs to green and solar roofs, with an excellent collection of detail drawings at 1:10 scale. The book is also packed with vital information regarding the history of roof types and fundamentals of roof construction, big and small. You can't go wrong in adding this book to your reference shelf.

Essential information for builders.......2003-12-01

I never would have guessed one could write a whole volume on pitched roofs, but, now that I've seen it, I see how specialized roof construction is. This being a European book, there's far more coverage of various types of roofs, with the asphalt shingles that are ubiquitous in the US being but one of many options. Even thatched roofs are covered. There's an extended section on structural requirements, and even a mention of historical methods, using hammer beams, for example. But it's the building science section that stands out. This is covered to some degree in all the books in the Construction Manual series, but the concepts of heat flow, moisture control, etc., are explained at great length here. Practical guidelines are given based on the European building codes, and construction details abound. The translation to British English (e.g. roof sarking) is well-done and the book design and paper quality are every bit as good as the excellent and highly technical content.

Another excellent book from Chris Pye, all you need to know to start letter carving.
Written in Pye's usual thorough and detailed style, it helps you with selecting tools, how to hold your workpiece, shows different letter styles, both incised and raised lettering etc...

A beginners course.......2001-03-03

This is a very good beginners book... I just started wood carving and my technique wasn't very good. After following the tips and tricks that you learn from reading this well laid out book the letter's I am carving are much stronger and the shapes more fluid. I highly recommend this book.

Struggles and Joys of a Pioneer family.......2000-12-14

Read it at once like a novel or in chapters like a series of vignettes, this delightful book features difficulties facing a farm family, and rejoices at their victories and grieves over their sorrows and defeats. Enjoy the mischievous pranks of a bunch of farm kids who invented ways to make their hard work more fun, and how their jokes sometimes turned into expensive lessons when things went awry. The intense desire for education that drove these farm boys to make enormous sacrifices in order to have an opportunity to achieve their goals is inspiring. This is a great book for young folks who are wrestling with lifes tough questions, and how faith, persistance and determination can lead to fulfilment of dreams.

Essential Alamo reading.......2004-06-10

I agree that this is a "must read" for any serious student of the topic. The author admits that he is not a professional academic historian but he took on this massive work because he correctly realized how necessary it was. As large as this compilation is, it does not (indeed, could not) include all of the primary material on the Alamo. What it does do is successfully show the nature of the sources Alamo writers have been using and continue to use. The sources are not only contradictory in many cases, but often of limited reliability (even when they appear to be detailed "official" records). That is why students of the Alamo should read this book before they blindly accept judgements presented in any other format, be it a written history, documentary, historical novel, or film.

Grand and flawed.......2004-02-20

A long overdue book---a compilation of hundreds of essentially contemporary documents and other accounts concerning the Alamo battle, which comprise its main strength. It's a pity the editor felt it necessary to comment on each historical issue rather than let the accounts speak for themselves, since he falls into the same, subjective, "I-have-a-hunch" trap of so many writers on this subject. E.g., he gives the questionable account of "Ben" more weight than those of Mexican officers regarding Crockett's demise, and on the question of the location of the Alamo flag, completely ignores the drawing by Captain Sanchez-Navarro that explicity places it atop the church. As a source book on the Alamo, this tome stands alone. As reliable scholarship on the subject--reader beware!

A great resource for the serious Alamo student.......2003-11-13

No reader without at least a basic understanding of the events and personalities connected with the Alamo battle should tackle Todd Hansen's "The Alamo Reader", but once a decent grounding in the history of that famous fight has been acquired -- and if that reader really wants to understand what happened -- then Hansen's book is a marvelous resource. An extraordinary range of primary source material is presented in the volume, and not just excerpts from one version of an eyewitness's account, but the whole of every variation. Hansen provides commentaries to help evaluate these sources for reliability, but the final evaluation of which to accept and which to reject is left to the judgment of the reader. Analytical essays by various noted Alamo experts are also provided for additional illumination. There has been nothing like this ever published about the Alamo before (and seldom about any other historical topic), and I cannot conceive how anyone seriously interested in the Alamo could not want a copy of Hansen's book on their shelves.

A Researcher's Dream.......2003-10-16

The most comprehensive compendium of source documents concerning the Alamo and their location, I've ever seen. This book is the starting place for any serious study of the siege and battle of early 1836. Hansen's discussions of various aspects of the documents and their contents at the end of each section are well thought out and well considered.
Be forewarned: This is a thinking person's book. The reader is not spoon fed answers. On the contrary, the reader will be forced to consider aspects not usually taken into account and contradictions not easily reconciled. The one thing this book teaches is that there are no easy answers. Hansen doesn't do the work for the reader and "Bravo" to him for giving the reader credit for having a brain.

The Definitive Alamo Source.......2003-09-23

At last! A reliable study of the siege and fall of the Alamo,backed up by a wealth of source documents, many published for the first time. At almost 800 pages, The Alamo Reader, edited by Todd Hansen, contains over 300 documents from letters written during the days leading up to the siege to reminiscences written decades later. His commentaries sum up this incredible tour de force of research. Well footnoted, Hansen supplies the raw material so readers can reach their own conclusions
about many controversial issues. A "must read" for any student of Texas history and the Alamo.

The criminal law has often been seen as central to the rule of the eighteenth-century landed elite in England. This book presents a detailed analysis of the judicial processs - of victims' reactions, pretrial practices, policing, magistrates hearings, trials, sentencing, pardoning and punishment - using property offenders as its main focus. The period 1740-1820 - the final era before the coming of the new police and the repeal of the capital code - emerges as the great age of discretionary justice, and the book explores the impact of the vast discretionary powers held by many social groups. It reassesses both the relationship between crime rates and the economic deprivation, and the many ways that vulnerability to prosecution varied widely across the lifecycle, in the light of the highly selective nature of pretrial negotiations. More centrally, by asking at every stage - who used the law, for what purposes, in whose interests and with what social effects - it opens up a number of new perspectives on the role of the law in eighteenth-century social relations. The law emerges as less the instrument of particular elite groups and more as an arena of struggle, of negotiation, and of compromise. Its rituals were less controllable and its merciful moments less manageable and less exclusively available to the gentry elite than has been previously suggested. Justice was vulnerable to power, but was also mobilised to constrain it. Despite the key functions that the propertied fulfilled, courtroom crowds, the counter-theatre of the condemned, and the decisions of the victims from a very wide range of backgrounds had a role to play, and the criteria on which decisions were based were shaped as much by the broad and more humane discourse which Fielding called the 'good mind' as by the instrumental needs of the propertied elites.
