One of my favorites!.......2007-06-01
This book has numerous great ideas for making awkwardly shaped spaces work, which sets it apart from other interior decorating books. There are also dozens of fantastic and unique examples for mixing new and old furnishings, and color guides to achieve the look you want.
Problem Solving for Awkward Rooms.......2005-12-19
The book addresses issues such as:
*creating privacy
*adding character
*warming up a room
*dealing with narrow spaces
*refreshing a room
*expanding small areas
The photos are fairly small, but that does allow for many examples. Most of the ideas are easily applied to your own situation, so give it a try.
good ideas in this book.......2005-08-22
This was a great buy. Lots of good ideas for maximizing space. The interiors are eclectic which I love.
Book Description
This highly influential work features 8 magnificent color plates and over 250 fine black-and-white illustrations, depicting a splendid array of classic heraldic motifs. Drawn from buildings, monuments, and architectural elements and encompassing a variety of media, the designs date from the 13th through 16th centuries.
Book Description
The author and photographer who opened a glorious window into the world of exotic birds with his hugely successful Extraordinary Chickens and its well-received follow-up, Extraordinary Pheasants, continues his startling photographic exploration with another singular and charming book. The striking images in Stephen Green-Armytage's first book showed that "the world of chickens is a world of wonders" (New York Times Book Review). Now this arresting new volume-a look at pigeon breeds from around the world-captures as we have never seen before the eccentric and often surprising features of these amazing creatures.
Pigeons of all sizes, shapes, and colors parade through these pages-from the Volga Tumbler Pigeons to the Philippine Bleeding Heart Doves (doves are actually pigeons, just small ones), from the flamboyant Jacobins who wear their lavish feathers like a boa, and the Pouters who puff out their chests to absurd proportions, to the Trumpeters who sport floppy crowns reminiscent of moptop 1960s pop groups. The astonishing color photographs, enhanced by a brief, informative text, make this a perfect gift for birders, breeders, animal lovers, and photography buffs alike.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing diversity beautifully photographed........2006-03-06
This is not an important book, but it is very enjoyable. It is a wonderful tribute to the variety and beauty that can be developed by either natural selection or selective breeding. Or, if you are creationist in your outlook, it is a wonderful example of the Creator's whimsy. The book is mostly photographs; there are some some brief descriptions of the types photographed, and a little general background text - but basically, it is a photography book.
All Pigeons Are Extraordinary........2005-09-09
The cover of this book has a marvelous picture of an extraordinary pigeon. All liveing beings need adequate amounts of food containing a balanced measure of ingredients if they are to function successfully. As do people. Pigeons are vegetarians and if ovrefed it reduces their mental alertness. At the Episcopal Church across from that awful noise maker used to keep the pigeons off one certain building in town, they put out the grain. I come along and give them my bread and crackers, biscuits when I can and rolls. Anything to keep these beautiful creatures alive. After all, they are God's creatures.
Correct feeding is necessary for growth, release of energy so that the body can function properly, and for the production of eggs to reproduce and to replace old tissue with new. Each year, thousands of eggs fail to hatch and that is due to vitamin deficiency. The mourning dove, a favorite of mine, so gentle and pretty, has a lovely singing sound, but some mean people use them as skeet targets. When a neighbor cat ate one which took up residence on my porch, I would throw things at that mean, nasty cat. And I love cats. I've owned cats for 27 years consistently but I also love the beautiful birds. The mournful "oooahh, ooh, ooh, ooh" sound is the song of the South. There were some in the attic of an apartment house right over my bedroom and their scurrying around with that sound of theirs had me concerned. I thought that the old man who lived in the place below mine was wheezing and about to die.
Urban pigeons have highly developed scavenging skills, raiding trrashcans and fast food litter. However, in Knoxville, we have enough bus riders who feed the pigeons wherever and whenever we can. The rock pigeon originated in northern Europe, Africa and India, but migrated to cities and towns worldwide some five thousand years ago. A flock may contain birds in every color from pure white to reddish purple, gray to solid black. They are a delight to they eye and heart as they are so appreciative.
absolutely outstanding!.......2004-01-12
Author and photographer Stephen Green-Armytage delicately captures the essence of the pigeon with incredible fortitude and devoted pigeonship. This is, by far, the best book I have ever purchased, read, stolen, borrowed, checked out, or found. In my professional opinion, this fowl genius deserves the American Association of Unappreciated Birds Award of Excellence. I have yet to research his age and citizenship status, but if I find he is eligible for Presidency, I will gung-hoingly fund his campaign myself. Hats off to you, Sir Green-Armytage, for an exquisite portrayal of these noble creatures we call pigeons, and their brave contributions to our corrupt society as majestic distractions from the hustle and bustle of our daily lives. Cherry-O!

I love this calendar.......2005-01-14
I got this as a Christmas present after raving to everyone about the book, and I love it. It's in my office and make me smile whenever I look at it. In addition to the large photo of the chicken of the month, as it were, there's also a small cutout photo at the bottom of each calendar page showing a second chicken's head, which looks quite hilarious sticking out against the calendar. Great for anyone who has a soft spot in their heart for chickens and/or an appreciation for the absurd.

Customer Reviews:
Very disappointing.......2007-08-06
This is a very superficial account of a "hiking" trip that involves rental cars and hotels. It's basically a short series of day hikes with too many irrelevant reminiscences of his days at Eton.
I was offended by his repeated use of the old term for Sami people and the region of northern Norway that they inhabit (comparable to using racist terms for African-Americans).
I was very surprised to see that the book was so poorly edited. My guess would have been that National Geographic would have access to proper fonts for Norwegian and people who can edit place names, etc. I also was very surprised that someone who teaches writing would have such a wordy writing style (for example, "the reason is because"). It just all added up to a very careless type of writing. Again, I would think National Geographic would be able to find editors to help an author overcome these kinds of things.
It's a shame. Norway is a wonderful country, and an in-depth travel book would be such fun to read; however, this is not that book. There's not much here that you couldn't get in a tourist guidebook.
Major disappointment.......2007-03-26
I am an American lving in Norway. I bought the book based on the other reviews I found here, thinking it might give some fresh insight into my adopted country. Not so. It seems to be a chronicle of a two-week vacation in Norway, half of it driving around in a rented car and staying in expensive mountain hotels -- "Norway lite". Watkins didn't spend enough time here or get deep enough into the mountains to write about them with any real authority. The few nights he was actually out in a tent he camped a few hundred meters from a tourist hut, and his hikes were all day hikes that didn't take him all that far from the roads. He seems to avoid contact with the locals, and never really avails himself of Norway's marvelous huts, which make long treks possible with a reasonable measure of comfort and security. (In some of the less-visited mountain areas, it is common to have a comfortably furnished old farm buliding, built of logs and with a turf roof, all to yourself!) His gasping account of his ascent up Storronden makes it sound much more difficult than it is -- because it is located directly above one of the huts, it is a suitable hike for six year-olds. His descriptions of the mountains are sorely lacking -- Rondane and Jotunheimen are dramatically different mountain landscapes, but you would never know it from this book. Even the cover photo is a misleading composite that has little to do with the content of the book. Finally, he regularly misspells and misuses Norwegian words. Some proofreading by someone who knows the language should be a minimum requirement for a book like this. You are better off tracking down and reading some of the 'ghosts' of the title -- Three in Norway by Two of Them is an absolute classic. There are many other, better books about Norway and Norwegians.
Fantastic.......2006-08-26
If you're a travel buff or fantasize about travel, you'll find this tale of Watkins' journey through the mountainous terrain of central Norway a page turner. His descriptions of ladscapes are vivid. Additionally, he aquaints the reader with the people, customs, and foods of the area. In fact, he does a phenomenal job such that if you really get into the book, you'll feel as if you've traveled to central Norway yourself. He carries books by those before him who have already made the journey. He uses previous tales of Norwegian travels to guide his tour. These are his ghosts, i.e. the ones before him. He constantly refers to these previous works, giving the reader a synopsis of previous travels by others in addition to the vivid description of his own account. If you're a sightseer and enjoy the outdoors, you will likely enjoy Watkins' tale. If, on the other hand, you prefer to spend you time indoors and in the city, you might find his tale quite dull. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, but I love the outdoors, state and national parks etc.
An Inward Journey.......2006-07-24
Paul Watkins' "The Fellowship of Ghosts" is equal parts highly readable travelogue and introspective musings as the author hikes and travels through the mountains of Central Norway. The ghosts of the title are earlier, mostly English, authors who wrote about their travels in the mountains of Norway: Watkins travels much of the same ground and notes what has and has not changed. As an American graduate of an English boarding school, the author is in a position to critique his precessors.
Watkins' interest in Norway is stirred when, as a college student working on a fishing boat, he is injured in an accident. During his convalescence, a shipmate entertains him with stories of his Norwegian homeland. Watkins is enthralled by the stories and visits as soon as he is well. The experience never quite leaves him, and the present book is oriented around Watkins' second visit many years later.
The area of Watkins's travel is Central Norway, specifically the Rondale, Jotunheimen, and Dovrefjell ranges, beautiful and still largely underdeveloped country. Watkins' observant eye captures a series of vignettes of the fickle weather, the austere tourist facilities, the magnificent terrain, and of his sense of mysticism inspired by the experience of being there. In these mountains, man is not the center of the universe and defines himself against an epic natural landscape. Watkins finds both the outer beauty of the mountains and a measure of inner peace.
Part of Watkins's commentary is a comparison of the marauding Viking stereotype against the kind and honest, if stoic, Norwegians with whom he has contact. Watkins touches on the long history and extensive mythology of Norway in a manner that provides context to his travels and to the Norwegian customs he encounters. Watkins' prose is wry and entertaining, often at his own expense as an American who speaks virtually no Norwegian.
It is unfortunate that the book has only one map and a single photograph of the author in the mountains. This reviewer was able to follow Watkins' adventures with a medium scale map of central Norway.
This book is highly recommended to those who have visited central Norway or plan to do so. It is not meant to be a travel guide but will provide some perspective to enhance the experience of those who cover the same ground.
A trekk through a Nordic Wilderness.......2005-09-24
I just finished this travel memoir, THE FELLOWSHIP OF GHOSTS by Paul Watkins about his solitary hiking trip through the lesser traveled area of Norway that lies just below Trondheim. I gave it 3 stars in relative to a general audience, but for those who have a genuine interest in this type of trip, it is a definite 5 star find.
The title is derived from the guidebooks that inform his journey, all written by Englishmen long-dead. It seems there is precious little available on this region of the world other than books written 100 or more years ago.
The book itself is an inner exploration of a trekk. Words often fail this experienced writer as he attempts to convey the timelessness and the depths of silence that accompany him as he hangs suspended outside of the 21st century. He also explores the meaning of being a Norwegian, delving into our cultural differences and the meaning of Norway's Viking history.
Although I know Norway rather well, this Central region (Jotunheimen and Dovrefjell) was a bit of a no man's land in 1967 when I was there for extended studies. I did not see much of it, and was told it was a place for the hardiest of souls, or, alternatively, It was the realm of trolls and giants. It seems little tamed over the past 40 years by this account. I only wish I was strong enough now to attempt to emulate his itinerary!
The book is a refreshing change from the derring-do approach of many mountaineering books and may serve to initiate some young minds about the value of such travels----But I suspect the most receptive audience will be people like me, who have already trekked through vast wilderness areas. We will certainly sit in our armchairs and relive our travels as we read through this book----
Book Description
Filled with more than 150 color and black-and-white illustrations, this handsome large-format book celebrates frontline medical personnel and the critical role they have played in the success of U.S. armed forces, from the battles of Lexington and Concord in colonial times to the recent battles in Iraq and Afghanistan. The narrative and photographs cover all the links in the military medical chain, beginning with ensuring good health for individual service members to caring for combat casualties and seeing to their return to health.
The book focuses on individual medics who serve with frontline units saving lives and moving casualties from the battle to definitive medical care. Readers accompany the medics and their patients from aid stations to combat support hospitals and air transportable hospitals to hospital ships and high-level medical centers. From horse-drawn ambulances to today's advanced medevac helicopters and aeromedical evacuation airplanes, the means of evacuating casualties from the battle has evolved dramatically, but the intent remains unchanged. Other important elements this book calls attention to are the military medical innovations that have improved the health of the armed forcesand the civilian population as well. This book is published with the cooperation of the Association of the United States Army.
Customer Reviews:
Daunting Task Summarizing US Military Medical History.......2007-05-21
Medics at War provides a succinct and impressive overview of US military medicine from the Colonial era to the present. With 214 pages and numerous photographs, the book includes the Revolutionary War, Civil War, WWI, WWII, Korean War, Vietnam War and operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. Both Army and Navy medical corps are well represented and coverage of Air Force medicine can be read in later chapters.
Authors Greenwood and Berry should be commended for inclusion of WWII amphibious medicine during the 6 June 1944 Normandy landings. Few military historians write of the Navy's vital role during combined operations. Previous authors often identified Navy surgeons and corpsmen on Omaha Beach as Army personnel.
It is important to clarify the 6th Naval Beach Battalion casualty rate reported in the book. Four officers, all Beachmasters, and 18 enlisted men were killed in action 6 June 1944. Twelve battalion officers and 55 enlisted men were seriously injured. Dr. John F. Kincaid, USNR survived the invasion but was killed in action less than a year later during a kamikaze attack off Okinawa. Dr. J. Russell Davey, USNR was injured on D-Day, continued his humanitarian duties on the beach, but unfortunately died at home in 1948.
great medical book.......2006-08-05
the book was well researched. it is a great platform for those who wants to know the role of combat medics in war.
Had more potential.......2006-05-03
With an interest in american combat medics particullarly from WW2 and Vietnam I was a bit disapointed with the book. The quality is excellent and the information contained within the book is informative however I am still only giving it three stars for two reasons. First I had hoped that a large part of the text would be filled with personal accounts and stories from actual medics who had served. Unfortunately that is not the case. I was also hoping to view at least some interesting and seldom published photos of medics in action. Unfortunately this is not the case either, the majority of the WW2 and Vietnam era photos are ones you've probably seen a hundred times before. How many times can they show the WW2 medic in Sicily holding a plasma bottle over his head while the concerned Italian family behind him looks on? There was one or two good WW1 photos and a great shot of medics in Korea patching a soldier up however the majority of the others were either ones published way too many times or photos that are only marginally interesting. Time spent searching for new photos in the national archives would have elevated the status of this book and unfortunately too many publishers rely on using the same shots over and over which diminished the book in my opinion. If you have an interest in military medicine history it is still a recommended buy however.
I bought this as a Christmas gift for my cousin,..........2005-09-30
...who is currently stationed in Iraq, as a chaplin with the Vermont National guard. Need to get it in the mail by 10/15/05. His wife said he would like this book. Perhaps he will send a review along, once he has it.
Exquisite surprise.......2005-08-16
I started reading this book thinking it was a kind of encyclopedia, a reference work of facts and dates explaining the evolution of military medicine. If it were only that, it would still be a useful book for a military writer or health soecialist. But soon into it, I found one surprise after another describing events, discoveries, personalities and even trivia suitable for inclusion in Guinness Book of Records. It's probably a stretch to say this book reads like a thriller, but it does record the genius, exertion and good luck of a lot of smart and brave men and women of all walks of life. It's a splendid gift for someone who likes to read and understand how we got from there to here. And it takes in a lot more than just military medicine, trauma and disease. It captures the whole field, including personality clashes, innovation and invention.
