Book Description
Renowned for being a universal designer, Santiago Calatrava has been a singular force in reviving an excitement for construction technology and infrastructure projects. Over the last two decades, Calatrava revolutionized the idea of bridges from utilitarian, mechanical instruments into elegant objects that enhance the sense of place and community of their settings. More than thirty celebrated bridges are featured here in drawings and full-color photography, including never-before-published projects such as the Woodall Rodgers Bridge in Dallas, the Sundial Bridge in Redding, California, as well as bridges in Barcelona, Bilbao, Buenos Aires, Jerusalem, Manchester, the Netherlands, Orléans, Paris, Seville, and Valencia.

Amazing, both for Architects and Engineers........2006-07-06
Wonderful bridge designs that entertain both fields of asthethics and engineering. It proves that there still is design in civil architecture.

Calatrava redefines brige design.......2003-01-23
No one has such a unique style of building bridges as Calatrava, who is trained as an engineer and architect. He focuses not only on profile, shape, and unique solutions but he pays close attention to the underside of the bridge. This book is full of his very intriguing bridge styles with CAD drawings to complement the models and photos of the finished works. There are some essays at the end of the book (some by him) that outline his design philosophy and discuss the controversy his bridges have provoked.
Calatrava's works define contemporay. I might also recommend a look at Wilkinson/Eyre's bridge projects which are in a different style but equally creative.

Customer Reviews:
Good Drawing Book.......2007-04-17
In this book you learn how to draw the japanese version of comic art manga. one thing i have to say is that this is a bit more of a cartoony version of manga. You still learn a lot of drawing techniques and its still a good book, but whats on the cover is what you learn how to draw. if you would like to draw advanced manga i suggest the complete idiots guide to manga. anyways over good book.
Manga Madness.......2007-04-01
I'll start off by saying this: don't be deceived by the cartoony cover. It's actually probably the best HTDM (How to Draw Manga) book I own. It teaches you everything from the origin of manga, to backgrounds, different coloring methods, chibis, robots, comics, and, of course, the basics of drawing characters.
Pages 6-7 cover the tools of drawing manga. It explains what kind of paper you need (size and such), what kind of pencils are best, what kind of eraser is best, and much more.
Page 8 explains anime/manga related terms, and even the origin of manga itself. The terms covered are anime, bishoujo, bishounen, chibi, doujinshi, kawaii, manga, otaku, RPG, shoujo, and shounen.
Page 9 gives illustrations of the eight step process the pros use to create manga. They include brainstorming, writing the script and drawing a rough layout, penciling (which, as a side note, I found was misspelled in the book), lettering, inking, lettering, erasing, coloring, and (finally) publishing.
Page 10 discusses the basic elements of manga style. This has a quick explanation of how hair, mouths, and noses or manga characters differ from that of standard American comic books.
Page 11 tells the origin and differences of shounen and shoujo. In case you didn't know, shoujo (as quoted from page 8)"refers to comics aimed at young males", and shoujo "refers to comics aimed at young girls".
Pages 12-15 point out some basic elements of heroes and villains. The heroes include "the dashing hero", "the magical girl", "the rebellious hero", "the big guy", "the kid", and "the mascot". The villains include "the big bad", "the evil queen", "the fallen hero", and "mindless goons".
Pages 16-17 basically explain that everything drawn is a collection of basic shapes. It also gives you a few examples of three-dimensional figures.
Page 18 is very helpful. It explains about light sources, and how shadows work.
Page 19 discusses and gives examples of the difference between soft shading and cel shading.
Pages 20-21 show the difference between coloring in markers, colored pencils, watercolors, acrylic on acetate, and computer coloring. I found these two pages to be quite helpful.
Pages 22-23 cover manga eyes. It shows the difference between male and female eyes, and shows you the steps of drawing both. Personally, I wish they had more examples on faces instead of simply drawn directly onto the page.
Pages 24-25 explain hair styles. These pages are incredibly informative! It gives you a color chart that includes several colors and what the typical personality is for its wearer (for example, blue = youthful, energetic, cool and introverted; red = energetic, good fighter, outspoken, stubborn and strong-willed.) and a picture of several styles and the typical personality of its wearer (long, straight hair: Traditional and down-to-earth; spiky: Energetic and youthful; ponytails: Cute, energetic, and a little ditzy.)
Pages 26-31 demonstrate how to draw faces facing forward, to the side, and even a three-quarter view.
Pages 32-33 have a list of emotions and a small example. The list is large and includes twenty-one emotions. They are pleased, laughing, happy, joyous, embarrassed, confused, sleepy, sly, pouting, bored, annoyed, angry, enraged, shocked, terrified, worried, crying, bawling, blubbering, yawning, and smug.
Pages 34-36 break down proportions for the adult male and female, the teenaged male and female, the young female and male, the chibi male and female, and one super-deformed female. I was quite pleased to see children who weren't chibis. Most How-To-Draw books only include how to draw chibi children. And best of all, no nudity!
Pages 37-38 explain a little bit about poses. This section is very short compared to most HTDM and quite uninformative.
Page 39 also isn't very helpful. It explains a bit about foreshortening.
Page 40 gives fantastic demonstrations of hands, as well as a great measurement tip.
Page 41 is great for drawing feet. It shows a few different poses, and even a foot in a high heel shoe.
Pages 42-43 focus on clothing. Page 42 centers on the flow and detail of clothing; while page 43 reminds you of the manga-specific clothing, such as kimonos, samurai armor, and the oh-so popular school uniforms. This page also has an example of two styles of uniforms for both girls and boys. I find myself referring to this section often.
Pages 44-85 include an example of many different characters as well as some tips and characteristics. The characters include the mischievous chibi, dashing hero, magical girl, rebellious hero, the kid (shounen), girls (shoujo), the big guy, the mascot, fallen hero, evil queen, the big bad, mindless goons, unstoppable fiend, fantasy warrior, elf princess warrior, martial artists, cat girl, android boy, Victorian rose (bishoujo), school girl (bishoujo), Victorian gentleman (bishounen), hipster student, skate girl (shounen youth), cyberpunk kid (shounen youth), space hero, space pirate, mecha, humanoid robot, and the crab robot. Most of them include a drawing in both colored pencil and computer colored.
Pages 86-87 give some interesting tips on martial art moves and battles.
Pages 88-89 remind you to consider the weight of weapons in your drawings. For being the weapons section, it isn't elaborate as most HTDM.
Pages 90-93 show examples of different actions and explains some important details such as what a character does when he/she jumps.
Pages 94-97 aren't necessarily for beginners. These pages are very, very helpful for hard core manga artists. These two pages cover the basics of linear perspective, and drawing figure in perspective. They go into amazing detail and explanation.
Pages 90-105 list some very helpful tips of drawing backgrounds and such. The examples include city buildings, the fantasy castle, the space station, and the traditional Japanese home.
Pages 106-113 show you how to draw vehicles. In order, the examples included are a jumbo jet (simple sketch only), old car (simple sketch only), sporty car, flying car, sky cycle, good-guy space fighter, pirate space fighter, good-guy spaceship, and pirate spaceship.
Pages 114-121 are about the design of a manga page. Now, the comics aren't good at all, but the pointers are. This includes the basic elements of a manga page (basically defining and giving examples of speed lines, bold lettering, narrative captions, and such), planning a comic page (teaching smooth transition of text), designing dynamic panels (different "camera" angles), basic panel shots (mostly different panel sizes), and pacing and panel flow (great tips on how to set up an interesting and sensible panel).
Page 122 defines the different kinds of word balloons and shows some lettering options.
Page 123 discusses sound effects. This page also includes sound effects in both English and Japanese. This page is also great to refer to when you'd like to see the meaning of a Japanese sound effect while reading manga.
Page 124 covers features commonly found in manga, such as speed lines, the big head yell, and falling cherry blossoms.
And finally...
Page 126 summarizes "the business of making manga". This covers six steps of drawing manga professionally.
Step One: Know your strength and weaknesses
Step Two: Meet people and get feedback
Step Three: Promote your work
Step Four: Be persistent
Step Five: Keep Learning
Step Six: Stick with it
Thanks for reading my (incredibly long) review!
Cool book!.......2007-03-17
This book is really neat, especially if you want to draw stories that have to do with superheroes and villians. The drawings are really cool, and it tells you the common things included in many hero mangas (very helpful if you are looking to make your own manga story).

Take A Picture of Your $30.00, Then Kiss It Goodbye...........2002-02-26
After reading (and loving) Pat McGreal's previous Vertigo/DC work- Chiaroscuro: The lives of Leonardo Da Vinci & Veils, I picked up I, Paparazzi with great expectations. Ummm.....can I have my money back, DC...?
I, Paparazzi centers on Jake "Monster" McGowran, a celebrity photographer, who runs afoul of a mean-tempered Sean Penn-type celeb, and stumbles into a bizarre conspiracy; actually, this one is THE conspiracy, the one from which all of the other ones were born,
The problems with the book were few, but large:
1)- The "Scooby-Doo" ending renders the whole story pointless. Why travel down such a bizarre road if it's only gonna end in Normalville? If you're going to deliver that kind of ending, it would have been better if the whole story had stayed believable.
and.....
2)- To this long-time Comic reader, the "Fumetti" style (using photographs instead of drawings) will always seem cheap-looking. I have no doubt that the book was expensive to produce, and very time-consuming, and the photography and digital imaging WERE impressive, but no matter how much of this type of work I see, it still doesn't click for me.
I would advise people with $30.00 burning a hole in their pocket to try McGreal's Veils instead.
Very Entertaining.......2001-10-12
I, Paparazzi is a graphic novel that is relatively unique in format. All of the artwork consists of photography that has been digitally altered (with added special effects, etc.). While this is an interesting gimmick that is used here quite appropriately given the subject matter, it is not always perfectly executed. For example, the colours can get garrish and the layouts are not always the most visually pleasing, but the effort that has been put into this title is worthy of admiration.
I, Paparazzi doesn't have the emotional depth of McGreal and Phillips' Veils (another highly recommended graphic novel in photographic format), nor does it have the beautiful lyrical paintings of Rebecca Guay which provided a nice break from the photographic art, but overall I did find this graphic novel to be more entertaining. The story is about a paparazzi who winds up on an X-Files/Robert Anton Wilson inspired adventure that is a lot of fun to read. To add more depth to the story, the author explains why the main character (and others) became paparazzi and defends the lifestyle pointing out, e.g., that it was a drunk driver who killed Princess Di and the fact that stars on their way up warmly welcome paparazzi until they reach the point where they, unlike most of society, no longer have to struggle to support themselves. Being photographed by paparazzi after deliberately placing yourself in the public eye is a small price to pay for such comforts.
The characters are all quite interesting, the dialogue is enjoyable, etc., making this a great read. Those who aren't familiar with McGreal et al's work might want to put off getting this graphic novel until it is available in a cheaper softcover, but I personally found the hardcover format worthwhile. And given the rarity of photographic comics (at least in North America), it also makes an interesting conversation piece.

Jody: A Woman's Journey.......2004-01-10
Excellent! I am of the "sixties generation." So much of the searching to make the world a better place, the conflict with my parents, being a part of the anti-establishment mind set, the demonstrating, all of it, is here, brought out with great writing skills, that evoked vivid memories of that time in my own personal history. It was interesting to read of this amazing time from the outside in, from another's point of view of the 60's, that is not necessarily my own.
For anyone who wants a bird's eye view of what it was like to be young in the 60's, this book gives a vivid taste. For anyone just wanting a darn good yarn, this is it, too! Well-written and involving. I was sucked in right away and am now eagerly awaiting the promised sequel.
Powerful story, powerfully told.......2004-01-09
For all the parents who ever asked themselves "Where did we go wrong?", for every son or daughter whose passionate need to make a difference has led them down many dark and difficult roads, here is a journey worth sharing. A powerful story, powerfully told about totally believable people, the tension builds unbearably until, with the final page the reader is left breathless with dread and hope, and anxiously looking forward to the promised sequel.

As many as one in ten women experience amenorrhea--the absence of menstrual function in women who have not yet reached menopause--in varying degrees of severity, at some point in their lives. This book offers women guidance and information about a subject that is often difficult to discuss.
Customer Reviews:
Useful when published but now outdated.......2006-05-11
The author has addressed the scientific issues to date and discusses the science behind the various conditions that cause amenorrhea. To perhaps make the book more readable for non-scientific people, she has included personal stories throughout the book.
The information in this book, while perhaps useful when it was published in 1997, is somewhat outdated. Though all of the information is not incorrect, there has been much research conducted since then, and there is new information on amenorrhea and causes of amenorrhea.
As there are other books and sources based upon current research available that can help people with this condition, check for recently published books on women's reproductive health for better information!
Excellent informative guide.........1999-01-26
This is a very informative guide to this worrying issue. It deals with complex medical issues in down to earth language. Through specific about the causes of lack of periods, it never blames and seeks to provide practical solutions. This is an essential guide for any women. Buy now.
Book Description
The Spotsylvania Campaign marked a crucial period in the confrontation between Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee in Virginia. Waged over a two-week period in mid-May 1864, it included some of the most savage fighting of the Civil War and left indelible marks on all involved.
Approaching topics related to Spotsylvania from a variety of perspectives, the contributors to this volume explore questions regarding high command, tactics and strategy, the impact of fighting on officers and soldiers in both armies, and the ways in which some participants chose to remember and interpret the campaign. They offer insight into the decisions and behavior of Lee and of Federal army leaders, the fullest descriptions to date of the horrific fighting at the "Bloody Angle" on May 12, and a revealing look at how Grant used his memoirs to offset Lost Cause interpretations of his actions at Spotsylvania and elsewhere in the Overland Campaign.
The contributors:
William A. Blair, Grant's Second Civil War: The Battle for Historical Memory
Peter S. Carmichael, We Respect a Good Soldier, No Matter What Flag He Fought Under: The 15th New Jersey Remembers Spotsylvania
Gary W. Gallagher, I Have to Make the Best of What I Have: Robert E. Lee at Spotsylvania
Robert E. L. Krick, Stuart's Last Ride: A Confederate View of Sheridan's Raid
Robert K. Krick, An Insurmountable Barrier between the Army and Ruin: The Confederate Experience at Spotsylvania's Bloody Angle
William D. Matter, The Federal High Command at Spotsylvania
Carol Reardon, A Hard Road to Travel: The Impact of Continuous Operations on the Army of the Potomac and the Army of Northern Virginia in May 1864
Gordon C. Rhea, The Testing of a Corp Commander: Gouverneur Kemble Warren at the Wilderness and Spotsylvania
Customer Reviews:
The Best CW Historians Essays on this Brutal Battle.......2001-01-14
Gallagher hits homeruns with this wonderful series of books on the critical campaigns of the CW. Not a continuous retelling but Gallagher and company get into specifics of the campaign through separate essays that allow greater detail on controversies, personnel, mistakes, and many subjects that prior to this were limited in detail. An example is Krick the Younger's detailed essay on the little known battle of Yellow Tavern that cost Jeb Steuart his life. The other essays all offer new detail and great insight. I was particularly fascinated by Gallagher's own essay on Lee's grappling with command erosion through the loss of Longstreet, Ewell's collapse and Hill's physical erosion. Show's Lee as a great commander much like a coach that loses star players but still manages a great game. All the essays are excellent by Matter, Reardon, Blair, Rhea and Carmichael but Krick senior's feature on the Mule Shoe exhibits great detail on one of the most horrid portions of any battle of the CW involving endless hours of close up fighting in the salient. The fighting involves trench warfare, attacking and shooting from just a few feet apart, hand to hand combat, continuous rain and a continuing of a struggle with death that seemed to have no end. After you read Krick's Mule Shoe, you recognize how the war changed dramatically from Bull Run to an incredible desperate struggle of all out war. Read closely Krick senior's dig at Longstreet who was not present after being shot down in the wilderness. Krick, a legendary critic of Longstreet, cannot leave him alone even in his absence.
Another tour de force from Gallagher et al........1999-02-18
A great addition to the Campaigns of the Civil War series, and proof that there is always something fresh to say about any historical subject. I especially liked the essay concerning Lee's personnel moves in the wake of The Wilderness; it's becoming increasingly politically incorrect to praise Marse Robert. Also, the essay on the fighting at the Bloody Angle is a wonderful piece of microhistory. The maps are excellent. As with the rest of the series, a must- read for the hardened Civil War student.
Book Description
The termination of the war and the fate of the Union hung in the balance in May of 1864 as Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia and Ulysses S. Grant's Army of the Potomac clashed in the Virginia countrysidefirst in the battle of the Wilderness, where the Federal army sustained greater losses than at Chancellorsville, and then further south in the vicinity of Spotsylvania Courthouse, where Grant sought to cut Lee's troops off from the Confederate capital of Richmond.
This is the first book-length examination of the pivotal Spotsylvania campaign of 7-21 May. Drawing on extensive research in manuscript collections across the country and an exhaustive reading of the available literature, William Matter sets the strategic stage for the campaign before turning to a detailed description of tactical movements. He offers abundant fresh material on race from the Wilderness to Spotsylvania, the role of Federal and Confederate calvary, Emory Upton's brilliantly conceived Union assault on 10 May, and the bitter clash on 19 May at the Harris farm. Throughout the book, Matter assesses each side's successes, failures, and lost opportunities and sketches portraits of the principal commanders.
The centerpiece of the narrative is a meticulous and dramatic treatment of the horrific encounter in the salient that formed the Confederate center on 12 May. There the campaign reached its crisis, as soldiers waged perhaps the longest and most desperate fight of the entire war for possession of the Bloody Anglea fight so savage that trees were literally shot to pieces by musket fire. Matter's sure command of a mass of often-conflicting testimony enables him to present by far the clearest account to date of this immensely complex phase of the battle.
Rigorously researched, effectively presented, and well supported by maps, this book is a model tactical study that accords long overdue attention to the Spotsylvania campaign. It will quickly take its place in the front rank of military studies of the Civil War.
Customer Reviews:
Reader from Maine.......2000-01-20
If you really want a serious consideration of what happened at Spotsylvania, I highly recommend William Matter's book. While other works may offer an entertaining read, Matter avoids clogging his work with anecdotal material, useless hearsay and speculation, and offers as near an accurate view of what really happened as we are likely to get.
it took more than a summer.......1999-02-18
Although this book is extremely informative, it's also extremely ponderous. It's a slow read. Turning all the pages may take more than just a summer. It's just not as enjoyable as other accounts. Try Gordon Rhea's book.
Book Description
On the morning of May 12, 1864, the site of the daring Union assault on the center of the Confederate line became the scene of the fiercest hand-to-hand combat of the Civil War, and thereafter was known as the "Bloody Angle."
Da Capo's new "Battleground America" series offers a unique approach to the battles and battlefields of America. Each book in the series highlights a small American battlefield-sometimes a small portion of a much larger battlefield-and tells the story of the brave soldiers who fought there. Using soldiers' memoirs, letters and diaries, as well as contemporary illustrations, the human ordeal of battle comes to life on the page.
All of the units, important individuals, and actions of each engagement on the battlefield are described in a clear and concise narrative. Detailed maps complement the text and illustrate small unit action at each stage of the battle. Then-and-now photographs tie the dramatic events of the past to the modern battlefield site and highlight the importance of terrain in battle. The present-day historical site of the battle is described in detail with suggestions for touring.
Customer Reviews:
A Great Little Book!.......2003-04-18
This is a great, great little book. One of the better ones in the Battleground America Series. The narrative is compelling and exciting, and gives a good detailed overview of the battle without being too technical and boring and reading like a textbook. This is a good account of the Bloody Angle battle, without having to read about the entire Spotsylvania campaign. The suggested reading chapter at the end also lists a valuable resource of references for further reading and learning and more technical volumes. Gettysburg perhaps steals a lot of the thunder of the other Civil War battles as compared to exposure and popularity, but the Spotsylvania battle, specifically the Bloody Angle fight, deserves a lot more attention and exposure than it gets. The Bloody Angle is important to Civil War history in that it ushered in a level of ferocity and brutality in Civil War combat that had never been seen prior to the Spotsylvania Campaign. It remains a unique and very exciting battle and hopefully there will be more written about it in the future.

Book Description
The Thousand and One Nights has captivated audiences for centuries, conveying universal messages through the adventures of both historical and nonhistorical figures. Yet, since medieval times, it has not been considered worthy of serious literary debate, and has been marginalized in the tradition of high Arabic literature. This book has successfully defied this taboo and in a brilliant combination of medieval and modern studies has emphasized the continuity, rather than the compartmentalization of Arabo-Islamic culture.

Book Description
Learning history is remembered by many teachers as a passive process involving `learning dates.' In this book, the emphasis is on `doing history' - making sense of the past through the process of investigation as a true historian would. The authors argue that children should be involved in historical investigations, thus developing the skills and processes that underpin historical understanding. Each chapter is supported by exercises and activities which demonstrate how to translate theory into practice together with a specific focus on the problems of planning and resourcing to produce practical teaching strategies.

Book Description
As one of the core areas of the curriculum, science provides particular challenges, especially to teachers working at the top end of the elementary school range.
Science 7-11 invites science teachers working with preteens to examine their practice in the light of current research findings. Clive Carre and Carrie Ovens, both experienced primary teachers themselves, ask what teachers really need to know both about their subject and about their students in order to teach science effectively. The authors give practical guidance on curriculum planning, on balancing enquiry approaches to learning with more formal "telling" and on the difficult area of collecting and interpreting evidence of children's progress for assessment.
