Decorating with Dirty Shoes.......2006-03-18
I was looking for a book with inspirational pictures of rooms that would be accessible, clever and plenty of fodder for thought. THIS book has at least two pictures of dirty old shoes plopped on dirty tile or stacked onto an utilitarian steel rack as an example of "style." Style to whom? I don't want to decorate with shoes.
I have found books on decorating to be either stuck on some weird aesthetic -- like this book's fascination with putting everyday items on display in dirty or messy surroundings -- or to be too focused on architectural detail instead of the decorating itself. The reality is that my house is of new construction and looks frighteningly like other people's houses and it is almost devoid of the type of architectural detail lauded in such books. What am I supposed to do? Tear down a wall? That's not decorating to me, that's construction.
Sometimes these books can redeem themselves by offering interesting commentary that can spark good ideas, but, not in this case.
Do not waste your money unless you are interested in decorating with your worn out sneakers.
Not one of my favorites...........2006-02-12
The book may appeal to someone with cheap tastes but for me to many of the examples were cluttered and to 'cute'. Or maybe I was simply looking for a book that had more style, or a book that would be more California or NYC friendly.
The initial photographs on each new chapter pages whet my appetite and made me assume that what would follow would be more of the same, but alas I would turn the page and be met with more cheap style ideas, if one can even use the word style. The books cover suggests a book that has style and a zen mode, but is far from either for me. The majority of rooms in the photographs in the book are more cluttered and cute.
Anyone for Making Felt Out of Old Wool?.......2004-01-05
Reviewed by Carolyn Howard-Johnson, award-winning author of This is the Place
It is my belief that this book would be most useful for those decorating a first apartment, a loft, a very small house, or a second home but certainly this book will spark anyone's imagination.
The authors offer ideas won't bust a budget for fabrics, window treatments, storage, flooring and other materials for the home. They include suggestions for finding treasures in unlikely places and making do with inexpensive materials from places like Pottery Barn, Pier One Imports and flea markets. Resources such as these are included, and picture credits are given.
All in all, Style on a Budget will not disappoint.
(Carolyn Howard-Johnson's first novel, This is the Place, has won eight awards. Her second book, Harkening, has won three.)

Nice gifs you can give others you know.......2007-05-20
Dick Sing has done it again. This stuff is fun to learn and even more fun to turn. It's nice to have this kind of stuff around the house sitting on tables etc.
GET BUSY.
More Would Be Nice.......2006-10-07
This is another of Dick Sing's 64 page 'booklets' that examines specific techniques for several projects. In this case the subject is ornaments and egg shapes. As usual Sing provides a great deal of detailed information, and the accompanying photos demonstrate that Sing is a master of making small, finely detailed woodworks. I followed his instructions carefully, and while I have quite a ways to go before I can equal Sing's work, I was able to impress myself. If I keep this up for another 5 years I too will have people beating a path to my door to buy Xmas ornaments. Well, probably not.
The problem with Sing's books isn't in the writing or packaging, but in the sparse quantity of material. You tend not to notice it, because the price of each publication seems reasonable. But if you add up all the of the volumes of Sing's work that Schiffer has published you will find that the price is stiffer than you thought. It would be nice if all of these thin paperbacks were combined into one volume. So I'm in the same bind I always am with these books a 5 for quality of content, but a 3 for quantity of content.
Dick Sing's Turning Ornaments & Eggs.......2006-08-31
This is a well illustrated book on 3 very popular projects. These are very popular items for gifts and craft sales. The icicle hollow ornament, egg and egg kaleidoscopes take a little technique. There are jigs for holding the eggs described and the techniques are gone into great detail. The tools, finishing and jigs are straight-forward. These are projects that take a beginner to the intermediate level and are very popular. The gallery pictures are inspiring!
Book Description
For experienced photographers who want to apply their technical skills to wildlife photography and for photographers who already have experience with photographing animals but want to further refine their images, this book provides the guidance needed to master artistically compelling wildlife portraits. Photographers learn how to create images that not only document their subjects, but also cause viewers to study and discuss them. Written for photographers who know how to create a technically precise photograph, this book shows them how to flex their creativity, apply their imaging prowess to the field, and evaluate their subjects in a new light. Practical tips cover everything from backlighting the soft, downy "stubble" of a newborn chick to choosing and using the accessories that help capture a unique perspective.

Beyond Documentary.......2005-02-10
You have to agree completely with the basic thesis of "Dynamic Wildlife Photography". Readily available modern camera equipment makes it easy for anyone who cares to make a technically perfect picture of an animal. Advances in travel allow photographers to go anywhere to photograph even the rarest of animals. As a result viewers have become accustomed to seeing good wildlife pictures. As a further result, to get viewers' attentions, photographers have to go beyond merely documenting an animal.
The authors suggest ways to accomplish this. Among other things they advise using unusual lighting and eye-catching composition, capturing behavior, and learning and using whatever is special about your subject. They advise incorporating weather into the your pictures and capturing the moods of animals, even at the risk of anthropomorphizing them. This book is all about composition.
It's all good advice, but I have to confess, other than so clearly articulating the premise, there's nothing that hasn't appeared in other books on wildlife photography. Like the documentary pictures described by the authors, nothing separates this book from the crowd. I certainly had more fun reading Moose Peterson's "Guide to Wildlife Photography: Conventional and Digital Techniques" where his discussion of making pictures "pop" was similar to the Illg's ideas. I wondered if this book was meant primarily as a showcase for the authors' photographs. And while these pictures are attractive and interesting, I'm not sure that they all reached the level to which the authors aspire.
There is no discussion of technique in this book, except to the extent that it impacts upon composition. That's not necessarily bad, but it means that the book is limited in what it discusses. Experienced wildlife photographers who are looking to take their work to the next level may find something here to think about. People new to wildlife photography will be better served by a book like the late Bill Silliker, Jr.'s "The Master Guide for Wildlife Photographers".
Book Description
Mountain Light is the best-selling classic that captures the unique artistic vision of Galen Rowell, one of the world's most celebrated nature photographers. This remarkable collection offers 80 of Rowell's finest photographic images, as well as the stories behind them - what he was after and how he achieved it.
Rowell arranges the photographs, with details of their creation, in eight exhibits according to visual themes, reflecting his fascination with the infinitely varying qualities of light found in mountain landscapes. He recounts his development as a photographer, his philosophy and techniques for creating "dynamic landscapes," and his adventures in remote, dangerous, and beautiful places, from California's Yosemite Valley to almost inaccessible peaks in China.
Rowell also explains how film and the human eye see differently, how he selects and composes the content of his work, how to work with optical phenomena and natural light, and how equipment and adventure interact in the field.

A Must Read For Landscape Photographers.......2007-07-23
This is a must read for anyone who likes to shoot landscape photography. This book doesn't go into a lot of technical details, and the author assumes the readers have a basic knowledge of how SLRs operate, but rather it deals more with the "why" of photography and "when", which I found to be very interesting and thought provoking. Galen Rowell shares his insights about mountain light and how his mind works when he is out with a camera along with what photography meant for him, and it changed my approach to landscape photography. He also shares his unsuccessful stories, which is not very usual for these types of books, and it's good to see that even for photographers of his level things have never come easy. Luck is a big part of it all, and he has a great essay there on how to be in a better position for its appearance. In addition, this book is full of his outstanding landscape art, and that alone is worth whatever the price you will pay for it.
A photography how-to book, not a camera manual.......2007-03-29
This is a book about making meaningful landscape photographs. This is not a book about which f/stop to use or how to adjust your depth of field or exposure. There are a ton of those types of books on the market. This book is about vision, learning to see and connecting personally with your images.
If you're comfortable with the mechanical aspects of your camera and are struggling with "technically well executed but lifeless images" this is your guide.
I highly recommend it.
Great Book.......2007-01-10
It's a great book ! you'll find all you need about photographing up in the mountains ! Galan Rowell was a great person ! A book worth reading by anybody who enjoys photography at high altitude.
What can I say.......2007-01-09
This is a beautiful book..full of amazing photos and will inspire you to take pictures like Galen.
Not many photographs.......2006-07-31
I have found suprising that there is a lot of text in this book and only few photographs. It is not an album - so don't expect one. However I enjoyed reading this book. Book is published on a thin paper (the same goes for cover) and seems not very solid.

Walt Kelly's POGO, a satirical masterpiece commonly acknowledged as one of the three greatest comic strips ever published, is finally back in print in this series from Fantagraphics Books!

More!.......2000-07-25
I started reading the comic pages long after Pogo went away, and what a loss! Pogo just keeps making me laugh, the artwork of Kelly plus the dialects and accents of the characters added to some darn funny material is priceless.
Walt Kelly was amazing! It's a shame we don't have any comic strips like this anymore. They manage to be political and funny at the same time, you could ignore the politics and still laugh at the antics.
I'm asking for nothing else for Christmas, just the rest of these books!
The intro could be shorter, I think.

A familiar figure on the modern battlefield is the combat correspondent, that hard-bitten, cynical journalist who chews on cigars and bullets and brings the smoke and gore back home. So the stereotype goes--and with basis in fact, as historian James Perry shows in this vigorous history of reporters on the front lines of the American Civil War.
Perry begins his narrative with the Crimean War, when the remarkable William Howard Russell sent dispatches of bungling and destruction to eager readers in London. When Russell, a larger-than-life character, strapped on his pistols and set sail from England to cover the outbreak of the American Civil War, he found that his fame had preceded him--and that he'd spawned many imitators. Newspapers North and South raced to scoop each other for the big stories of the day, fielding reporters who sought to outdo Russell at his own game.
Perry centers his narrative on a comparative handful of these homegrown journalists, whose work entailed constant danger on both sides of the line--bullets from the front, suspicious generals ever ready to charge the reporters with espionage on the rear. Most of the journalists acquitted themselves well in their work, although some were inclined to florid prose and not particularly troubled with questions of accuracy. Quoting extensively from the dispatches of those battlefield writers, good and bad, Perry examines their role in shaping American journalism--after the Civil War, the reading public demanded eyewitness accounts instead of canned official releases--and public opinion throughout an era of cataclysm. With A Bohemian Brigade, Perry adds a useful, and highly readable, footnote to our understanding of the era. --Gregory McNamee
Book Description
"LIKE THE WAR ITSELF, THIS IS A STORY OF REMARKABLE PERSONAL DRAMA."-New York Times Book Review
More Praise for A Bohemian Brigade
"Highly engaging . . . Perry has a special feel for his topics and a keen eye for detail."-Wall Street Journal
"James Perry has written a compelling and detailed account of the men who did their best to cover-and, at times, fight-the first instant-news war. This book tells the story of the sometimes painful birth of the modern war correspondent."-Dan Rather, CBS News
"Civil War reporters were a colorful breed: rough, rowdy, courageous, competitive-occasionally even accurate. Jim Perry, a great reporter himself, recognizes these bohemian adventurers and brings them vividly to life in this entertaining and eye-opening look at the men who crafted the rough draft of our history."-Tony Horwitz, author of Confederates in the Attic: Dispatches from the Unfinished Civil War
"A Bohemian Brigade is a joyous account of a time when reporters did not take themselves seriously-nor did anyone else-written by one of the great reporters of his generation."-Sander Vanocur, The History Channel
Customer Reviews:
And they ain't changed much, huh!.......2002-07-27
Perry offers a look at the War Between the States through the exploits of key and minor journalist personalities of the era. More of a "fun" account -not too heavy on military history or the politics of the times - just a "you are there" approach as the reader goes along on the oft-times zany adventures of these reporters of sometimes questionable merit. The author is very up-front in his criticisms of their craftsmanship, yet balances his barbs accordingly.
Keep in mind this is NOT a "day in the life" of a correspondent.
Each chapter usually dwells on a different writer/journalist or highlights a key battle.
An intriguing look at a the Civil War from a different angle.......2000-09-05
"I am en route to Washington with details of a great battle. We have carried the day." Thus, the headline of the New York Herald stated about the perceived Union success in that seminal foray the day after the first Civil War battle at Bull Run. General William Sherman vilified them as "the buzzards of the press." George G. Meade "strapped one of them backward on a mule and rode him out of camp" complete with a sign embellishing him as "Libeler of the Press." In fact, Army commanders on both sides distrusted a free press they could not control. The "scoundrels" in this event are the reporters who roamed the battlefields chasing a story. The self-proclaimed Bohemian Brigade was a "group of men who tried to make sense of the most dramatic event in American history" and they did it by writing columns in various newspapers for the Union, Confederacy, and at point's abroad. Author James M. Perry writes that the civil war reporters, to many, were a preposterous, controversial, infuriating, and disarming band of rogues and heroes. Perry, himself a journalist and author of Arrogant Armies and recipient of the prestigious Fourth Estate Award, is a modern day version of those that packed the Civil War battlefields and then scurried to send their messages and stories either in person or by telegraph. This is what makes A Bohemian Brigade: The Civil War Correspondents unique; it is written by a son of their own, someone who is profoundly qualified to develop this wonderfully constructed chronicle of those reported on the war between the states. From the battlefield of the first encounter at Bull Run came the scouring assembly of news-seekers like Charles Charleton Coffin, Henry Villard, and Uriah Painter of the North, Peter Alexander and Felix Gregory de Fontaine who worked for Southern papers, and William Howard Russell of the Times of London. It was the first deployment of the Bohemian Brigade and the results were mixed at best. As described on the inside cover of the dusk-jacket, which by the way, is part of one the most aesthetically appealing book covers on the market, "much of our understanding of the American Civil War is based upon newspaper dispatches written under horrible battlefield conditions, and journalists' memoirs penned under more reflective moments after the war's end. As a result, modern American journalism emerged from the Civil War and Perry makes it clear that, thanks to the telegraph and the importance placed on breaking news and scoops, the conflict was the first instant-news event. It was a time of sending message using "the lightning" or the telegraph. Perry draws upon his experience as a newspaperman to show for better or worse that for the most part, these reporters put their lives at risk on the battlefield and he brings each reporter, "rogues and heroes alike," to life in this wonderfully crafted book. There is no doubt they were pompous and arrogant, highly inventive, they lied and cheated, they got the story wrong more often than they should have, and they drank too much. By his own admission, Perry claims that, ``They did a lot of things reporters are still doing today.'' But they were also, Perry admits, that for all their faults, these correspondents who endured Civil War prisons, battlefield skirmishes, and intense colleague competition to get the story to print. In short, it is wonderfully readable narrative worthy revealing the historical significance of the battlefield reporter.
Bohemian Brigade.......2000-05-21
A very readable book. Sometimes humorous, always informative and flows like Perry's articles in the WSJ. What more can you ask of a book? It's fun to read.

Book Description
The aim of this book is to provide an introduction to the mathematical theory of infinite dimensional dynamical systems by focusing on a relatively simple, yet rich, class of examples, that is, those described by delay differential equations. It is a textbook giving detailed proofs and providing many exercises, which is intended both for self-study and for courses at a graduate level. The book would also be suitable as a reference for basic results. As the subtitle indicates, the book is about concepts, ideas, results and methods from linear functional analysis, complex function theory, the qualitative theory of dynamical systems and nonlinear analysis. After studying this book, the reader should have a working knowledge of applied functional analysis and dynamical systems.
