A book on how things used to be........1999-04-22
Man-o-man, I used to love looking at old buildings and would be in awe of the amount of work that went into them. All of the art work, craftsmanship, and downright labor. Well, this book really brings to the forefront through numerous period photos and floor plans. The book actually contains very little wording, but then the photos and floor plans are enough to tell you many things about the structures. Most of the buildings are in New York City and I recently had the opportunity to visit. As I walked along the many streets, I came across buildings that had been built by the architects and it was just awesome to look, of course, only from the outside at the wonderful structure and compare it to the photos and floor plans that are now etched in my mind. I look at the book and discover new things about the works of art that I hadn't known before. Sorry if it sounds a little romantic but when I pass one of the new office buildings or structures, well, I'm just not moved by them. Dave Sanchez

In a nicely packaged format, this slim but helpful guide demonstrates how to capture and preserve the ephemera of nature on paper, for use as framed pictures, stationery, gift wrap, and adornments on fabric, furniture, and walls. In addition to printing with flowers and leaves, the instructions cover the use of fruits, vegetables, feathers, shells, fish, even a spiderweb. Accomplished with various types of inks and paints, the prints have a lovely watercolor quality, a subtle cross between the delicacy of a pressed-flower picture and the look of rubber-stamping.

I've Been Had.......2006-03-17
I purchased 2 books on nature printing...NATURE PRINTING WITH HERBS,FRUIT AND FLOWERS and NATURE PRINTING 30 PROJECTS ETC.
Silly me, I thought these were 2 different books but alas they are the same exact book page for page printed under different titles.Isn't there some kind of protection for customers concerning that...don't get me wrong I love the books but I wasted money...one would have been enough!

This is the book I've been looking for!.......2000-07-12
Do you love nature? Do you have an artisic urge? Do you think creating art is difficult or expensive? If you love nature and want to bring it to your fabrics, walls, note cards, etc. then this book would surely delight you! The Victorians loved "capturing" nature in all its innocence, beauty, and comfort. They created so many wonderful collections, decorations, etc. This wonderful addition to the craft world shows the nature lover how to use nature to enhance the tranquility of your home or surroundings. The author shows you how to use an endless bounty from the natural world plus a few printing inks and paints to illustrate your world with the panorama of nature. The techniques within this volume are so enchanting yet simple enough for children to to accomplish as well. A wonderful way to enoy summer days!
Great for rubber stampers & paper artists, inspirational.......2000-05-03
This is a must have book for anyone who collects plants and other nature items. It is also a great find for rubber stampers and other paper artists. The book is in full-color and has many illustrations.
The book starts out with a brief history of nature printing. It then details collecting, transporting, and pressing a wide variety of plants. Then paper & materials for printing and the printing process itself are discussed.
Specialized techniques for printing objects such as spider webs, shells, feathers, gyotaku (fish rubbing), Taku-ga (rubbing picture), bubble printing & cyanotype are demonstrated as well. All the instructions are easy to follow.
There are also many wonderful projects including fabric painting, wall printing & note cards. The resource guide is a nice bonus. This inexpensive craft is easy enough a child, yet rewarding for adults.
What a way to capture nature!!.......1999-09-07
This is the most amazing book! I love nature and wanted to find a way to tie that love into an art form. This is definitely THE book for my purposes. Very detailed and inspiring with wonderful instructions and visual examples. I can't wait to take my next watercolor class and try these techniques on my work!
My favorite Storey title!.......1999-04-25
Nature Printing is an enormously inspiring book. After reading it I grabbed paints, paper, and children and headed out into the backyard. We had a great time being creative and finding plants and bits of nature that had, until then, gone unnoticed. Some of the prints we created were surprisingly beautiful. It was a great learning experience and a whole lot of fun!

A glory of the late Italian middle ages.......2004-10-10
The Visconti Hours dates was painted in Italy for the Visconti family of Florence in the early 1400's. This book reproduces the illuminated carpet pages from this manuscript along with an introduction to the history of the book and commenty on individual plates. The plates themselves are very colourful and striking filled with vivid pinks, purples and greens. There were two main artists who produced this book and their work is quite distinctive giving the second half of the book quite a different flavour from the first half.
My main complaints about this reproduction is that the gold ink that has been used to recreate the effect of gold leaf in the original book has somewhat obscured some of the detail in the facsimile plates, and that some of the edges of the pages appear to have been chopped off to forced into the current book size which gives the impression of the illuminations spilling off the page or amputated in some cases.
However, these quibbles aside, this is a striking manuscript, well worthy of reproduction and every time you look at you are astonished at the brightness of the plates and the colours the artists selected. They are very different from the books produced in France and England during the same period. This book, in hardback, with a slipcase, is recommended to anybody who enjoys the striking beauty of medieval illuminated manuscripts.
Magnificent Reproduction of an Amazing Book.......2000-07-02
The Visconti Hours, one of the most luxurious and unusual Italian Books of Hours from around 1400, is magnificently reproduced in this facimile edition. The introductory text begins with an excellent summary of the political and social context of the book's production for Giangaleazzo Visconti, its noble owner. It continues with a discussion of the book's structure, iconography, and painting techniques, and includes short biographies of the two artists.
The plates themselves are of particularly high quality, sharp, clear, and brilliant, with gold stamping. The commentaries are informative.
All in all, this book is a must-have for any serious student of medieval illumination, as well as for the simple pleasure of enjoying its outstanding beauty.

Customer Reviews:
Are you a Member of the Beat Generation?.......2004-03-14
If you can remember when this material was new, hip, and cutting-edge, well.... you are getting old, man- real old. The pieces in this collection are from the 1956 and 1957. This is back before the "usual gang of idiots" was known as the "usual gang of idiots"- they were merely idiots. I mean the hot topic here was "beatniks", so you know that you are dealing with "classic" stuff. And you really are, reading this paperback of classic MAD Magazine material from the 50's is like breaking open a time capsule- especially if you remember those days.
Contents: Foreign Movies, Top Atom Bomb Song Hits, Mad Coats of Arms, Movie Scenes We'd Like to See, MAD's Picture-Phone Backdrops, Motorist Beware, Spoofs on the comic strip "Nancy", Backyard Barbeques, MAD Bubble Gum Cards, The Children's Hour (Don Martin), The MAD Dating Technique, Movie Scenes We'd like to See II, 35mm Camera Comparison, Sin-Doll Ella, Future TV ads, The Potrzebie System, Dead Letters, Raw Guts, Mad Eating Utensils, More Civilized Mousetrap, The Railroad Timetable, and The Seaside Incident (Don Martin.)
As the intro states: Like, MAD is not square (it's much longer than it is wide), Like, MAD is real cool (if you keep it in the refrigerator), Like, MAD is the most (the most asinine stuff you've read), Like, MAD is the end (the end of a long line of successful paperbacks if it doesn't sell.) Well, it's been nearly 50 years and it's still selling....
If you like this one, then check out _MAD about the 50's_.

Perhaps an open mind is the best bedmate.......2000-04-04
I read and enjoyed this book, though at times I felt I was having my hand held as I wandered blind through the world of writing. Seeing as this is a book for those interested in writing and learning how to write better, I would have chosen a style that is directed slightly higher than the lowest common denominator. I must admit at time I felt overwhelmed and appreciated the tone, but for the most part I found myself skimming over the "See Jane Dance, Dance Jane Dance" sections to get a broader look at the material. Overall, a good book.

Book Description
The F-15A/C is irrefutably the most successful jet fighter of the last 30 years. Serving in the Air Forces of Israel, the United States and Saudi Arabia, it has racked up a kill ratio exceeding 105:0. Despite its age, it remains the leading operational air superiority and intercept platform in service today. The hi-tech wizardry of modern air combat detailed in this book makes for fascinating reading, even to those not immediately familiar with modern airpower, and a huge pool of previously unpublished information on both aircrafts' combat records is uncovered.
Customer Reviews:
Fantasticly Entertaining.......2007-03-13
This is a must book for anyone interested in modern air combat. It is so completely detailed in it's descriptions of the modern air to air missions that I had to look up some of the terms. It shows why our young F-15 pilots are the best in the world. I sent the book to a friend who was a former F-15 pilot and he said it put him right back into the airplane. He said the descriptions in the book are completely accurate and shows why the Iraqie pilots ran to Iran to escape certain death if they came up to fight. It also shows why the F-15 has the best kill ratio in history 104-0
When Eagles do their best !.......2005-07-27
Steve Davies is not just THE authoritative F-15E Strike Eagle specialist that every military aviation enthusiast knows well. With this new reference in the great Osprey Combat Aircraft series, Steve Davies examines an extraordinary career : the F-15C Eagle - which is now his "focus" aircraft - never lost the air combats it had to face on its operational theatres ! NEVER ! Enlightened by numerous magnificent colour plates, the last title signed by Steve Davies allows the reader to learn from the pilots themselves the fate of a plane that history can't forget. Definitely a "must have" for who wants to know what air dominance really is nowadays.
A wonderful account of modern air-to-air combat.......2005-07-19
Steve Davies has compiled the most up-to-date account of the F-15C operations in the last 15 years, changing many misconceptions that held for a long time. Although I had read about air-to-air operations in the Gulf War in the excellent book "Gulf Airwar Debrief", Davies' work is far more detailed and gives many interesting tips in modern tactics, especially in the little explored field of BVR combat. The reader will be surprised to find that not all the Iraqi pilots were inept and took Sparrow shots like sitting ducks, but fought with courage and even good tactical skill in some occasions. Davies also describes the reasons behind the great disparity of kills achieved by the 1st TFW and the other USAF units and also has a chapter devoted to the 1994 incident of blue-on-blue encounter when two Blackhawk helicopters were accidentally shot down over Northern Iraq killing all 26 on board. There is also a brief account of the kills achieved by F-15s during the Operation Allied Force (1999) and a good overview of the advantages and drawbacks of the new AMRAAM missiles (not all of these shots were succesfull after all!)
Book Description
The F-15C/E has formed the backbone of US and Coalition operations in the Middle East for over a decade, patrolling the skies over northern and southern Iraq as part of Operations Northern Watch and Southern Watch. F-15Cs policed the skies for Iraqi aircraft operating in contravention of no-fly zone agreements, whilst the F-15E was constantly dropping weapons onto the Iraqi SAM and AAA emplacements that engaged Coalition aircraft undertaking this mission. The USAF’s use of the F-15 in the region culminated with Operation Iraqi Freedom, which was launched in mid March 2003 in order to liberate the people of Iraq and ensure the destruction of Saddam Hussein’s alleged weapons of mass destruction. In doing so, the F-15C was used to protect friendly troops and aircraft from any last-ditch attempt to use the Iraqi Air Force. In the event, the F-15Es of the 4th Fighter Wing saw most prolific use, engaging Iraqi armour before Coalition ground troops moved forward, and providing close air support to soldiers and Special Forces as they came into contact with the enemy.
Customer Reviews:
A must-have for all F-15E fans.......2005-02-22
`F-15C/E Eagle Units of Operation Iraqi Freedom' is Osprey Publications' latest volume (No. 47) in their Combat Aircraft Series and Steve Davies' third book on the F-15 subject.
Like the title says, the book decribes the operational environment of both the F-15C and the F-15E during Operation `Iraqi Freedom' but the focus is clearly on the F-15E Strike Eagle. Which is no surprise, since the author has outstanding connections to the Strike Eagle community at Seymour Johnson AFB (which is the home to the two F-15E squadrons that participated in the conflict) and because it was the F-15E Strike Eagle that played the dominating role in the theatre.
His direct access to the men and women of the 335th Fighter Squadron `Chiefs' and the 336th Fighter Squadron `Rocketeers' enabled the author to write a description of the units' operational environment in the theatre of unparalled accuracy. Interviews with those involved describing their experiences during the conflict give the book a `thrilling' component, bringing back memories of reading William L. Smallwood's fascinating Operation Desert Storm books.
`We were already climbing up to conserve fuel on the way home, and I had barely finished my turn when the RWR (Radar Warning Receiver) screamed its stuttering wail in my headset. The noise chilled me to the bone - it was the missile launch tone. Before I looked at the RWR itself, my eyes cued in on the blazingly red warning light on the instrument panel, located just below the glareshield at eye level. It is only the size of a dime, but the black words backlit on the square red light jumped out at me larger than life - "SAM". At the same time my WSO "Maddog" shouted "ROLAND!".
Hairraising quotes like this one from an interview with `Hacker', a F-15E pilot who was shot at with two `Roland' surface-to-air missiles ripple-fired one after the other by Iraqi ground forces south of Bagdad, make it almost impossible to lay down the book before the last page. All 6 Chapters of the book are incredibly interesting to read and contain highly accurate and informative text plus more than 90 photographs, mostly taken by aircrews during their deployment or the author himself.
The book's first chapter `Eagle Genealogy', gives a short introduction into the F-15 Eagle history and technology providing the not up-to-date reader with the level of information on the aircraft he needs to continue with the following chapters. As for the F-15E Strike Eagle, the chapter is a very brief summary of the author's previously released book `Boeing F-15E Strike Eagle - All-Weather Attack Aircraft'.
After this little update on (Strike) Eagle technology, the reader is well prepared for the following chapters of the book. Chapter two "Watchful Eyes" summarizes the activity of F-15C Eagle and F-15E Strike Eagle units in the theatre during Operations 'Northern Watch' and 'Southern Watch'. This gives the author the opportunity to discuss the final deployments of
F-15Cs to the Persian Gulf, since it was the F-15E that played the main role once Operation `Iraqi Freedom' began.
Chapter three `The "Dirty" Deid', deals with the Rocketeers' and Chiefs' deployment to Al-Udeid, Qatar, which would be their home in the theatre for the month ahead. The author describes the new operational environment at Al-Udeid, the squadrons' practicing for their new tasks and their preparation for upcoming Operation 'Iraqi Freedom'.
All aspects of F-15E Strike Eagle activity during Operation 'Iraqi Freedom' are covered in chapter four 'Non-traditional Warfare'. With its 47 pages alone, it is the main chapter of this book, describing the various types of missions F-15E crews were flying during the conflict including AGM Strikes, FAC, SCAR, KI, CAS, Urban CAS, airfield attacks, SCUD Hunting, or DCA and Escort. Besides the already mentioned photographs, the author illustrated this chapter with aircraft profiles (by artist Chris Davey) of no less then 18 different 335th FS and 336th FS F-15E airframes (plus 3 F-15C airframes) mostly with colorful nosearts, not missing to describe the background of each aircraft. Talking of nosearts, photographs of many
F-15E nosearts carried by 335th FS and 336th FS aircraft during the conflict are featured in a 'Colour Nose Art Gallery'. The most thrilling part of the chapter is when F-15E pilot 'Hacker' tells his hairraising story of his double Roland encounter (see qoute above) adding a cockpit voice recording transcript of the incident.
In the fifth and last chapter of the book, Steve Davies makes us 'Looking to the Future'. He describes new avionic and weapon systems which are waiting to be introduced to the F-15E, making the mighty Strike Eagle even more powerful.
Conclusion
Without a question, 'F-15C/E Eagle Units of Operation Iraqi Freedom' is a very well-done book that I can't recommend highly enough. If you are interested in the most recent middle-east war, state of the art US air power and the mighty F-15E Strike Eagle than this book is a must-have for you. With its very high number of photographs and illustrations, the book is also a great piece of reference that all F-15E modelers should have on their bookshelves.
Very highly recommended!

Book Description
This important book is a critical introduction to the rapidly expanding field of postcolonial studies. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, the author draws on literary criticism, philosophy, anthropology, history and politics to develop a distinctive account of postcolonialism.Quayson discusses key debates in the field, including the implications of various forms of interdisciplinarity for postcolonial studies, the relationship between indigenous knowledge and contemporary historiography, the links between postmodernism and postcolonialism and the insights of feminism for postcolonial theory. He explores the relevance of these debates for cultural, literary and political criticism. Throughout the text, he stresses the importance of seeing postcolonialism as a process of analysis which does not simply refer to another stage after colonialism, but to a continuing struggle against colonialism and its effects. He encourages the reader to think through the issues that are raised by postcolonial theory and to relate these to political practice today. This practical application of postcolonial theory allows the author to develop dynamic new perspectives on aspects of contemporary culture, history and literature. He discusses the work of Rushdie, Morrison, Achebe, Soyinka and Okri, amongst others; many of his examples are drawn from African cultures, an area which has been hitherto neglected by postcolonial theory. Quayson also develops postcolonial approaches to the literary canon, showing how this perspective can shed new light on some of the classical works of English literature, such as those of Shakespeare. This book will be essential reading for students of literature, history, anthropology and cultural studies, as well as all those concerned with debates about postcolonial theory and its political functions.
Customer Reviews:
Post Colonialism.......2001-12-28
This book is a must for anyone eager to battle the Centre of Academia! However in order to win that battle, first with yourself and then with the world, the key is mitigation. This book is fine, and there are others to help you along, however the important thing to remember (and is too often forgotten) is that the post colonial nations are more different than the same, heterogenous, and therefore every culture should approach things differently.
It is very important to know that almost every book that has been published, is half Centre (colonial), and half post colonial. Few books, especially those mainstream can be published without the stamp of approval, and those that receive that stamp often succumb to the lure of the CEntre.

Customer Reviews:
A pat on his back by his peers.......2006-08-02
Perhaps my poor rating has something to do with the fact that this is the first biography I have read, which is not an autobiography. I was really disappointed in the way the general theme behind every historical tale was what a great, hardworking, persevering and smart guy Leo Sternbach is. Now I'm not disputing the truth of those things, it's just that compared with the nit and grit of an autobiography, this celebration of a man just doesn't cut it.
As for the second half of the book, it's almost as unbalanced as the first. It is an advertisement for benzodiazepines, and a complaint at the unfair treatment they have had in society. I felt uneasy while reading, like maybe I should be checking the sources because it was all too good to be true. That said there is a lot of information in there and I have learned a lot about the benzodiazepine class of drugs. I appreciated the clear explanations of the pharmacological aspects of the drugs.
I also noticed a lot of rough edges between the various authors, such as repeated information. Given the lack of depth I don't think it was necessary to have more than one or two authors at most.
As a read it lacks the anecdotes to keep it interesting. As a science book it lacks the depth to use it as guide or reference.
