Book Description
Cities have always been the crucible of culture and civilization--and the hubs of wealth creation. But today they face enormous challenges. Compounded by infrastructural, economic and social problems, dramatic changes are taking place. If cities are to flourish, there has to be a paradigm shift in the way they are managed, to draw fully on the talents and creativity of their own residents--businesses, city authorities and the citizens themselves.
The Creative City is both a clarion call for imaginative action in the development and running of urban life and a clear and detailed toolkit of methods by which our cities can be revived and revitalized. Presenting case studies and examples of urban innovation and regeneration from around the world, it analyzes the crucial steps and disciplines involved. It shows how to think, plan and act creatively in addressing urban issues, and how to apply the methods described in any city.

Book Description
More than 1,500 fine pencil illustrations of the human and over 100 animal species instruct the artist in mastering anatomical drawing. Complete musculature and skeletal sketches, technical tips, and detailed drawings make this over-size volume the most valuable book available for the student and working artist. Text summary of each animal species characteristics includes the history of the species and average sizes and weights of each animal. Specifics are also described, from the number of teeth and vertebrae to the development of the musculature and hair. Drawings for each animal include full-on and side views of skeleton and musculature. Full-page close-ups focus on specific areas of interest such as the head, feet, and hindquarters. All drawings are annotated, with complete labels noting specific bones, muscles, joints, limbs, etc.
Customer Reviews:
Definitely one of the better anatomy books.......2006-07-31
The main reason I love this book so much is because of its simple rendering style - I have so many books where the illustrations are overly rendered and are therefore hard to see what's going on. I also really love how it shows the muscle origins and insertions clearly, a lot of books skimp on that. The labeling is easy to read since it's listed on every page.
The downside is that I have a feeling some of the illustrations aren't totally accurate, like the proportions are off a bit on some of the drawings. And the females illustrated in the book are all a bit on the masculine side. But overall in general you will get the main idea. There is also almost no text explaining what's going on in the pictures, so I recommend you buy a few other books with better text. Good supplements to this book are Atlas of Human Anatomy for the Artist by Stephen Rogers Peck and Anatomy for the Artist by Jeno Barcsay, they both have better text and expand upon what this book doesn't.
What also makes this book different is all of the animal anatomy, over half of the book has some typical animals. This isn't what I bought the book for but it is definitely interesting and helpful. The main animal it focuses on is the horse, there are over 100 pages dedicated to it. I don't really have any books on animal anatomy so I can't compare the animal anatomy section to anything else, but I do like it as it's organized and drawn in the same style as the human anatomy section. Once again, I think some of it isn't 100% accurate when it comes to proportion from what I can tell, so you may want to find a book dedicated to animal anatomy if you're serious about it.
Overall I would definitely recommend this book, but don't use it as your one and only book reference to anatomy, you should definitely check out the other two mentioned above. I also can't complain since I got this book on clearance at B&N for ten dollars, but now that I've gone over it more thoroughly I would definitely pay more for it.
Cyclopedia Anatomicae by Gryorgy Feher.......2005-06-12
This is an excellent volume which depicts human and animal species
in great detail. The facial perspective of the human anatomy shows the vertical distance between the chin and nipples equivalent to a single head. Muscles, feet, complex joints,
biceps, the clavicle insertion and thoracic links are drawn to
perfect scale. This work would be very helpful for medical students, artists, journalists and a wide constituency of the general public. The drawing scale is appropriate for a detailed
study.
Good content, bad binding. .......2004-08-08
I bought this book as a keeper and it is a very good anatomical reference. There is a problem with the binding of my copy which I purchased new. The pages are beginning to drop out. It's a handsome book but quality is measured behond the point of purchase. External appearances can be deceiving. What I thought were stitched signatures turn out to be perfect binding (pages glued in). I love this book but I'm very disappointed in this failure of craftsmanship.
Animals good! People???.......2003-12-16
I was dissapointed again as far as finding a good book for human anatomy. The drawings of people are out of proportion, shortened as if drawing on a flat table surface will give you. They are also very limited. It was nice however to see female anatomy illustrated. The book however is a great reference for the artist interested in anatomical information for various animals especiallly the horse. It is a keeper for that reason and the great price.
great buy..........2002-11-04
This is a fabulous book... While it probably isn't the best for beginning artists, I find it incredibly useful. I reference it all the time when a limb just doesn't look quite right, or better yet, before I've started a project, to make sure I get things right in the first place! if you understand the way things connect (bones, muscles, etc) then you will better grasp what movements are 'right'. It's a fabulous reference, and a great read! the pictures are clear and well labeled. I got this book over the summer, and it hasn't spent more than a day or two on the shelf before getting pulled out again. Well worth the money!

Customer Reviews:
Yes, disappointing........2001-07-28
I too was disappointed with this book. I am a full-time mother, so I could not relate to her perspective as a "dual-career" mom. Much of what she wrote about was just not helpful, and I really can't imaging it being helpful for a "working" mom either. I cannot recommend this book.
Martha Stewart she ain't--thank heavens!.......1999-06-09
I've read several of Kathy's books and what I like about her is that she's refreshingly normal. It's packed full of so many tips on so many topics that I will never buy another book on home management. This book, like the original Family Manager book, deals with real issues, such as how you run a home when you can't really afford to hire help (by getting your family to work as a team--and she talks about how you do that). She talks about business concepts and models and how to apply them to your home life in language you're more likely to hear from a friend than a high-powered business consultant. (I especially like the section where she transfers business skills to home life, and vice versa--but I guess that's just the career counselor in me:) Plus, you have permission not to have a "picture perfect" house if doing so means that you'd drive your family crazy, to stop comparing yourself to the lady down the street and either ask her to be a mentor to you or discover that your priorities are different and that's OK. But best of all is the sentence on page 180, where she says, "my hunch is that children of two-career moms learn more independent living skills sooner because two-career moms need help with. . .everything. . ." If you're working for the right reasons and motives, then this can be good for your kids. And I like that.
A major disappointment.......1999-05-08
I bought this book because I was hoping to pick up tons of practical tips that I could apply to my everyday life as a working mom, but I found that it merely rehashed things I've read in every woman's magazine time and time again: plan ahead, make casseroles for the freezer, delegate, etc. etc. I much preferred Working Mothers 101.

Visions of War: Picturing Warfare from the Stone Age to the Cyber Age
ASIN: 0807823562
Release Date: 1997-08-20 |
Book Description
For thousands of years, art has interpreted the experience of warits methods, human costs, and moral ambiguitiesand has offered historians a wealth of testimony that is only beginning to be systematically explored. In this wide-ranging study, Peter Paret discusses forty-seven paintings and prints as complex documents of war in Europe since the Renaissance and as examples of the artist's use of war as a metaphor for the human condition.
The images include works by such major artists as Uccello, Géricault, and Dix as well as academic history paintings and popular prints. By setting each in its historical environment and analyzing it from the perspective of the wars of its time, illuminates the place of war in Western consciousness and expands our understanding of works that are too often approached with little concern for the reality they depict or symbolically transform. Perhaps the most significant of the themes he traces over five centuries is the gradual change from the prince or general to the common soldier and civilian victim as central figures in the interpretation of war in art.

Book Description
System Modeling and Optimization is an indispensable reference for anyone interested in the recent advances in these two disciplines. The book collects, for the first time, selected articles from the 21st and most recent IFIP TC 7 conference in Sophia Antipolis, France.
Applied mathematicians and computer scientists can attest to the ever-growing influence of these two subjects. The practical applications of system modeling and optimization can be seen in a number of fields: environmental science, transport and telecommunications, image analysis, free boundary problems, bioscience, and non-cylindrical evolution control, to name just a few.
New developments in each of these fields have contributed to a more complex understanding of both system modeling and optimization. Editors John Cagnol and Jean-Paul Zolésio, chairs of the conference, have assembled System Modeling and Optimization to present the most up-to-date developments to professionals and academics alike.

Book Description
â~Science, Technology, and Societyâ - STS - has become a major educational theme. There are many courses in schools, universities and other institutions, dealing with all sorts of topics such as the history of science, energy policy, industrial innovation, technology assessment, Third World development, scientific method, and so on. But what is this subject really about? Why shoud it be taught? Who should study it? What should they learn? How should the subject be approached? Who should teach it? These questions are being asked by both teachers and students in many fields of science, engineering, medicine, social studies, and the humanities. This informal account of the rationale of STS education shows how many diverse factors are involved - the philosophy and sociology of science and education, social and cultural objectives, political ideologies, vocational needs, scholarly standards, institutional capabilities etc., not to mention the practical realities of teaching and learning at all levels.
