Book Description

Knowing that global land uses require radical rethinking, David Dobereiner looks at how development ideals can be translated into practical techniques that conserve natural resources, take advantage of existing structures, and improve the economic and social dimensions of a community while considering the financial realities that must be faced. What needs to be done, he believes, is known and is technically feasible.

David Dobereiner was an associate professor of architecture at the Syracuse University department of architecture and has also served on design juries and given seminars and lectures at Harvard University, MIT, and the University of California Berkeley. In 1990 he won an international design competition to build bioclimatic houses in the Canary Islands. His team's submission was the only winning entry from the United States.

5 out of 5 stars An architect's Take on the Climate Crisis.......2007-01-10

The End of The Street: Sustainable Growth Within Natural Limits was written by my partner so I am prejudiced. but nevertheless, it is an important book. I had the opportunity to watch David work on the book for many years and can vouch that he has been ahead of his time in many areas, especially ecology.
One of his co-workers once said that he could solve a design problem better and faster than any other architect he knew and I have witnessed this many times over . In " The End of the Street", he presents many examples of ecological and architectural ideas, in word and in image.
His views of the sustainable city and of the society of the future are brilliant and innovative.
David is a dedicated, earnest, quietly intelligent, creative person with a great deal to donate to the discussion of the climate crisis, to architecture and to our world.
David became a vegetarian over 55 years years ago when, as an architectural student in England, he was sent to study slaughter houses. His love of animals is evident in the book. The description of our cat is particularly apt. David rides his bike almost everywhere and tries to live as ecologically as possible so, he does not recommend things that he doesnt try to practise in his daily life.
I'm not sure if the American public is yet ready to forgo the large single family house and the 3 cars and the huge stores but with the climate crisis becoming more imminent, there may be no choice.
David has adapted Matripolis so that other countries with varying topographies and populations, especially poor countries, might find an answer for their housing and ecological problems.
Apart from general reading I hope that The End of the Street will be used as a text ...It is informative, interesting ,timely and well written.

5 out of 5 stars Landmark for Environmental Designers.......2006-09-30

...I found Dobereiner's book the most staggeringly impressive, on its subject, that I have ever come across. The contents of the book bring so much insight and information, emerging from his creative genius that I believe it is epoch making, a landmark for all environmental designers as well as an inspiration for the life-positive evolution of homo sapiens.

5 out of 5 stars Design can save the planet .......2006-09-30

David Dobereiner's just published THE END OF THE STREET, Sustainable Growth Within Natural Limits, gives us hope that our march toward oblivion can be reversed through examples of "green" communities both large and small. Dobereiner gives examples; his model city Matripolis, his rammed earth buildings in Nepal and his Tenerife Bioclimatic Design house in the Canary Islands.

I recommend this book for design students almost as enthusiastically as I once did R. Buckminster Fuller's OPERATING MANUAL FOR SPACESHIP EARTH, and Victor Papanek's DESIGN FOR THE REAL WORLD. THE END OF THE STREET will provoke discussion and convince young people to design responsibly to save the planet.

Book Description

A history of the Art Students League of New York from its inception in 1875 to the present. Includes overviews of the world art scene during the end of the 19th century as well as glimpses into New York City during the turn of the century.

The author tried as much as possible, in accordance with the wishes of Rosina Florio, former Director of the League who initially commissioned the book, to write a history that avoided a factual date-to-date, person-to person chronicling drawn from archival materials by relying heavily on the personal memories and observations of League members, instructors and models. It was in this manner that a sense of the League spirit as well as its influence on the American art scene might be transmitted in a livelier form to the reader.

5 out of 5 stars The thread of tradition is revealed.......2006-07-13

History of the Art Students League
While reading the history of the Art Students League, by Raymond J. Steiner, I was able to trace the roots of the tradition of painting that I now pursue. This was as validating an experience as tracing your genealogical roots to understand your connections to the past.
While living in New York City I attended the Art Students League , studying with excellent teachers like Harvey Dinnerstein and Ron Sher. It was my belief that our subsequent move out of the city would deny me the masterful guidance the League provided. I was wrong.
My move out of the city shifted my focus to landscape painting. Friends told me that there was an excellent landscape instructor at The Ridgewood Art Institute in New Jersey.
That instructor is John P. Osborne, who studied under Arthur Maynard, who studied under Frank Vincent Dumond at the Art Students League. Now living more than 60 miles away from the city, I still have access to a tradition that began in Europe and has been handed down through generations of artists.
Reading the book brought to life the challenges endured and the devotion embraced by a small band of artists to pursue their craft. Generations that follow, settling away from the HUB, still benefit from the core group that founded the league. I, for one am grateful for the League and for Raymond J. Steiner who so beautifully created this historical journey providing an understanding of the threads in tradition.

4 out of 5 stars Memories of the League.......2004-03-10

Ray Steiner's book on the League brought back wonderful memories of the very quality time I spent studying there as a young art sudent. Harry Sternberg, Michael Ponce DeLeon, Will Barnet, Yasuo Kunyoshi, many others, were all there in real life, creating the ambiance of continuing art history. Mr. Steiner's book is an informative contribution to the cultural story of our times. Monya Brown, artist, director/producer:ARTLAND(Public Access TV,CH 15,96 Westchester County)

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Experience.......2004-03-08

In addition to sharing with us the historical and academic aspects of this valuable institution, Mr. Steiner has given us a rare glimpse into the life of many of the artists who worked and studied there. We have the opportunity to appreciate them as people who participated in life, enjoyed friendships, attended social functions and parties. They have been fleshed out into real people creating art as an extension of their lives, rather than just names on paintings. I find Mr. Steiner's book a refreshing change from stodgy "catalog" type works that bore us with facts and forget that artists are human beings and enjoy the lives of real people while creating works of art. This book has enhanced my enjoyment of many of the works produced by artists who studied at the League and I believe everyone reading this history will come away enriched and smiling.

5 out of 5 stars Lke visiting old friends.......2004-03-07

This book brought me back to one of the best and richest times in my life. It was a reunion with old friends and teachers. Mr. Steiner has done a remarkable job.

4 out of 5 stars Valuable Insights into a Venerable Institution.......2003-03-02

Valuable insights into the founding, evolution, and character of one of America's most influential art schools are provided by this book.

The author goes "behind the scenes" to provide us with a human view of the instructors and students and their relationship to the League. It discusses the League's disputatious beginnings and its energetic evolution into what is arguably New York's most important art school.

The author has used his art-world connections to glean rare anecdotes about the League, offering the reader glimpses of this institution which are unlikely to be found elsewhere.

This book will be valuable to anyone who wishes to understand the history of art and artists in New York.

4 out of 5 stars an individual voice.......2002-01-26

This book brings back the John Wasserman I knew, and I miss him all over again!

The writing is just like John himself: quirky, funny, a bit self-indulgent, but always interesting and with unexpected twists. Wasserman's range of knowledge and interests was wide, and his sardonic view of the world is as refreshing as a glass of lemonade after some overly-sweet candy.

These were newspaper columns and thus topical, but they have lost little interest over the years. The Wasserman touch remains individual, the quotations marvelously apt, the conclusions clear. While the book will be of most interest to those who knew John's work when he was alive, I hope it will bring this remarkably talented and sadly short-lived writer's work to a wider audience.

            From Midwest Book Review

This photographic history of Hiroshima and Nagasaki provides the first comprehensive photographic record of the bombings and their aftermath, presenting a history of the two cities before and after the bombs drop and also including photos of American and Japanese politicians and military men involved in the bombing. Anticipate a detailed, well-rounded title.

            1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2005-10-15

It seems that the people of the United States still do not deserve to understand, to see, the racist genocide they commited with the children and the women and the men from Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

This book is nothing but a joke.

1 out of 5 stars Not one of the 100,000 corpses made it in. Not one........2005-07-15

The dust jacket of this book boasts that it is "the first comprehensive photographic record of the bombings". However, its idea of comprehensiveness - while finding room for a film poster of the 1952 Robert Taylor movie "Above and Beyond" - does not include *a single one* of the tens of thousands of corpses littering the ground of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

That's right. As far as the 500+ photographs in this "objective, informative volume" [quoting the dust jacket again] are concerned, our two atomic bombs - while producing a lot of rubble and five mild burn victims - did not cause a single fatality.

The chief author of this book is identified as "a retired U.S. Air Force officer". Make of this what you like.

2 out of 5 stars Mostly establishment propoganda.......2003-12-11

First, I am in no way an apologist for the Japanese or the atrocities they committed before and during WWII. The official Japanese versions of events such as Nanking and the Korean "comfort" women and the people who perpetrate them are in as much denial as the people who defend the atomic bombs as being a military necessity. The winners don't necessarily write history-the textbook writers write it. And for the record, I do live and work in Japan, but having read many books on the subject, I have to view this book as being extremely biased toward the "establishment" version. Most of the Japanese I know are deeply ashamed of the horrors committed by their countrymen.

As for those who criticize "revisionist historians", of which the authors of this book obviously are not, I would ask, what other type of good historian is there? History is not static. It does change. Even if a historian finds evidence that corroborates the "establishment" view, they still have in a fashion "revised" history in that they have added to it. As any new evidence becomes available (e.g., from the FOIA), historians have to revise (these ideas were garnered from "Hiroshima in America" by Lifton and Mitchell. Also, isn't it funny, one never hears of "revisionist geologists," for example-guess they're too politically boring). In defense of the authors, at least they admit their bias from the beginning.

Onto the book, I rate it as a "2" not because of what it says (ok, some of what it says) but mostly for what it does not say, and, more importantly, what it does not show. Granted, many of the photos in the book are powerful, and should be shown--thus the "2". However, most that show the devastation of the bombs focus on the architectural damage, not the human damage. The extremely small percentage of photos that show victims are not extremely difficult to view and in no way show the vast horrors experienced by the victims. And yes, they were victims. Almost all were civilians, and contrary to a claim in the book, there were American victims in both cities, both POWs and American-Japanese who were in Japan at the start of the war. Both of these groups have had incredible difficulty in getting aid from either country after the war, as neither side wishes to claim responsibility.

Several of the photos do appear to have been doctored in one way or another. The most obvious one is on page 149, which purports to show a nurse with a group of orphans from the bombing of Kumamoto (I have no reason to deny this claim), in which the background is completely blacked-out. It is not made clear if the authors did this or the picture they received/found was already this way. Unfortunately, unlike scores of other pictures in which they offer commentary, no explanation is given for this. The only evidence of its origin is in the "Photo credits" section which credits one of the authors, Goldstein, and William Hendricks. This one instance severely undermines their version, in my humble opinion because it so clearly illustrates their bias. Why would a "photographic history", which takes great pains on many other occasions to explain and bring notice to other photographs, leave such a questionable one untouched?

The text of the book also avoids much of which has been shown to be true. As a scholarly document, the book is horrible. It does not use footnotes or endnotes so that independent verification can occur. It offers only a "brief bibliography" which is obviously tilted toward their bias.

For example, while the report of the US Strategic Bombing Survey is cited several times, the authors fail to include this VERY important quotation: "...certainly prior to 31 December 1945, and in all probability prior to 1 November 1945, Japan would have surrendered even if atomic bombs had not been dropped, even if Russia had not entered the war, and even if no invasion had be planned or contemplated." The Japanese were beat. They knew it, we knew it, and the only thing holding up a surrender was the assurance of the emperor--which we gave them and which we probably shouldn't have.

Basically, the book fails on many levels. Again, it doesn't really show the true horror inflicted upon human beings. It would have been rightly justified in showing the human suffering caused by the Japanese, but that would have meant in some way admitting that the US was wrong in that it was militarily unjustified. It is not a scholarly work, as it offers not chance to verify/discredit their claims. It is not a history book as it is so *extremely* biased and completely refuses to challenge the claims against its stance. I would have much more respect for it if it would take on some of the "alternative" views. It is not a photographic history, at least not in a *complete* sense, in that it leaves out more than it shows.

Read these books, and if you can dispute their claims, write your own:

Hiroshima in America by Lifton and Mitchell
The Decision to Use the Atomic Bomb by Alperovitz (the best and most complete of the ones I've read)
            Hiroshima by Takaki

Finally, I believe that by saying the atomic bombs ended WWII takes credit away from the people who truly did end it-the soldiers in the Pacific theatre. Their contribution is diminished every time the bombs are given credit for the end of the war.

            5 out of 5 stars Chilling.......2001-11-08

I just received this book in the mail today, however I have all ready read half of it and have found it very stirring.
Before my recent studies of Hiroshima and Nagasaki I did not have any idea of the devestation that went on over there. This is the most visual account I've seen to date.
A chilling account to one of the worst mistakes in American history.

5 out of 5 stars The Choice That Saved a Million Lives.......2000-09-06

THE ONLY BOOK OF IT'S TYPE!!! The complete pictorial history of the weapon that changed the way mankind thinks of his enemy and war. Goldstein, in previous books, has given the world the most complete picture of the start of the War in the Pacific,by telling us both sides of how and why the events occurred. Now he ends the war with the Manhatten project and the dropping of the two a-bombs. This book is the only one I know of that presents the effects on Nagaski, the forgotten city. As Pearl Harbor and Hiroshima have become SISTER CITIES you need to have "Rain of Ruin" as the definitive companion to your Pearl Harbor collection.

                  Book Description

This is the first major study of the convict in the Atlantic world of the eighteenth century. It concentrates on the diverse characters of the transported men, women and children, and their fate in the colonies, exploring at the local level the contrasts in sentencing, shipping and settlement of convicts in America. The central myths about transportation prevalent in the eighteenth century, particularly that most felons returned, are examined in the context of the burgeoning print culture of criminal biographies and newspaper stories. In addition, the exchange of representations between the two sides of the Atlantic, and the changing American reaction to convicts, are placed within the growing transatlantic debate on transportation before the American Revolution. Above all, the realities of escape, of convicts running away and returning to England, are subject to systematic investigation for the first time.

                    Book Description

Science education has changed radically in recent years, both as a result of debates within the subject and because of curriculum legislation. Jerry Wellington discusses the major issues in science education today, such as the balance of content and process in the curriculum, the role of practical work and the nature of science as a subject. Secondary Science covers every aspect of science teaching, including planning, differentiation and special needs, assessment, problem solving and investigations, handling sensitive issues such as sex education, and building on children's prior learning. Throughout, Wellington's guidance is accompanied by suggestions for discussion, activities for individual and group use and annotated lists of further reading aimed at helping the reader build up a personal approach to the teaching of the subject. Students will also be aided by the glossaries of specialist terminology at the end of each chapter.
