I liked this book as it was easy to read and gain tips and pointers. Time is always a factor in my life and I liked this book as it got to the point. It has helped me deal with some issues I was having at work as a manager. I recommend it if you are wanting to improve yourself as a manager.

As a new Chick-In-Charge, after reading this book, I was so relieved that I am not alone in my troubles, because when I started to work as a boss, I felt that I was about losing my mind and others could achieve to manage with all these managerial problems but I coluldn't!! But to read this book helped me to see that all these problems are common and normal; most importantly I could find basic tips to solve them and gain a different point of view.
I read many books to improve my managerial skills, to be able to be a good boss ; but being a woman boss is a different thing and you are under very big risk to be a bitch at workplace!! If you don't want to follow the bad examples and if you want to be a nice boss but to make your staff work most efficiently, read this book!!

This book as well as any other books by Rob Portlock are wonderful and so much fun to share with friends and family. Not a cook-book.......2007-05-04

If you are looking for a recepy book or "real answers" in terminology of another reviewer, you should indeed look elsewhere. However, if you are interested in research and reasoning behind a good chuck of the Gordon model, I suggest that you check it out. No matter how many times we use quotation marks around "scientific" or the "so-called" around any of Gordon's concepts, most professionals (e.g. consultants, good managers) know that the model mostly delivers in the workspace. I am not equating your subordinates to your kids, but psychologically there is little difference when you want to trigger self-starting, self-structuring, self-driving type of behaviour. This book gives you more theory behind the no-lose conflict resolution than PET, TET or Effective Leader. Even the types firmly stuck in "you win - you lose" or "I win - you lose" modes of conflict management (or in conflict avoidance, for that matter) may find this book compelling. In fact, it may be a better start that a more every-day oriented PET or TET.

Not a how-to, a deeper look into theory.......2000-11-29

The idea that you can influence children's behavior without using punishment is one that is -- to this day -- thought impossible by a lot of people. In Discipline That Works Dr. Gordon delves deeper into the theory of his landmark book Parent Effectiveness Training, showing exactly what effects the use of parental authority has on children. The book still covers the skills parents can use to positively influence children's behavior (that are in P.E.T.), but with a heaping serving of the underlying theory (for those of us who just can't get enough of the "whys" in life).

Look elsewhere.......2000-07-16

I do not recommend this book for parents searching for real answers. The title of this book is very misleading and should have been more appropriately entitled "Evidence For Not Disciplining (as defined by Dr. Gordon)Your Children". Most of this book is filled with so-called scientific research which simply berates 'punitive' punishment, rewards and praise. It's filled with definitions that do not quite match everyday life. I honestly do not know for whom this book was written - those who already agreed with Dr. Gordon used it as their soap box. Those who disagreed would not have found a possible bridge with offensive language like 'superiority' and 'so-called caring parents'. The book includes only a small section of solutions which are hazy at best. For a complete understanding of his program, read P.E.T. Leave this book for the ivory tower types who seldom want to provide solutions but would rather win a philosophical argument.

Best Bang for the Buck.......2003-06-29

I own a pretty good collection of Napoleonic uniform books including Eltings, Lachouque, Bucquoy, and Funckens just to name a few. Some of these volumes are hundreds of dollars. Andre Jouneau and Jean-Marie Mongin have come up with tremendous uniform books at an extremely low cost. ...It has hundreds of images of the Old Guard, Young Guard, Grenadiers, Chasseurs, and all the major units of The Imperial Guard. It has good color detail and is a great book for people interested in this period. Although I am not a miniature painter I do not think that you could find a better book to illustrate detail in order to paint miniatures. The images in this book are computer generated which can have its pluses and minuses. On the minus side this means that the faces on the images are all pretty much the same and the poses are nearly identical. On the plus side you get numerous images with detail. Overall I enjoy these books more than any other series including Osprey simply becasue of the huge variety of uniforms included. I hope they continue with this series as anticipated. Future works are supposed to be 2 volumes on Napoleonic Hussars. I would pick them up as well. If you have any interest in Napoleonic uniforms do not hesitate to buy these books.

Not short on details.......2003-04-19

Here's a book that shows practically all aspects of the uniforms of the Guard (foot). Examples of service stripes, NCO rank, shako/bearskin cords, flags, and other accouterments/regalia are clearly illustrated. This is a pure reference book for the "uniformologist." That's why I am very well pleased with it. Easily worth it's price several times over. Can't wait to get the Guard Cavalry one. Also, this is one of the few books I've seen with easy to follow organization charts that help explain the Guard units' composition, history, etc.

La Garde Imperiale.......2002-05-31

This is an excellent introduction to the troupes a pied of Napoleon's Imperial Guard. It is not meant as a definitive study, but it does cover the foot troops (infantry, artillery, supporting services, pupilles) of the Guard quite thoroughly. Using computer generated graphics that appear in the books of FG Hourtoulle and produced by Histoire et Collections, it is an astonishing achievement in the presentation of the myriad regiments that made up the Guard at its height.

It has a few minor errors on the first go round, such as not giving the Fusiliers-Grenadiers queue's like the Old Guard infantry, which the regiment earned for valiant service. however, the overall impact of the volume more than makes up for it.

The references used include Rousselot, Rigo, and Michel Petard, all quite reliable and the booklet is logically laid out. I thoroughly enjoyed this volume and will use it often as a quick reference. I bought it sight unseen, taking a gamble and this time came out on the winning end. This volume is highly recommended and it is also recommended that it be used with John Elting's superb Napoleonic Uniforms, Volume II, as well as any and all Rousselot plates you can get your hands on. This booklet will be especially useful for wargamers and figure painters and it is highly recommended.

There will be a second volume on mounted troops.
