Customer Reviews:
THE MOST BEAUTIFUL THEATRE ARCHITECTURE BOOK EVER.......1999-10-22
The Last Remaining Seats is simply a feast for the eyes for anyone interested in movie palace architecture. The book includes color beautiful color photographs of the Million Dollar, Los Angeles,Palace, State, Tower and Orpheum Theatres on Broadway as well as the Mayan and Belasco on nearby Hill Street. The Wiltern on Wilshire Boulevard is also featured. The Hollywood theatres included are the Chinese, El Capitan, Egyptian and Hollywood Pacific. Three other theatres include the Rialto in South Pasadena, the Wrner Grand in San Pedro and the Avalon on Catalina Island. Unfortunately, the photographers could not obtain permission to photograph the United Artists, Pantages and Fox Wilshire Theatres. A history of Los Angeles theatres in included in the introductory chapter but the main focus of this book are the photographs which are wonderful. If you are a lover of old theatre architecture, this book is a must.
LOS ANGELES MOVIE PALACES IN GLORIOUS COLOR.......1999-04-16
This 9x11-inch opus is essentially a picture book, but oh, such pictures! The real authors are the photographers who overcame many obstacles to capture the fine color photos which reveal the remaining Los Angeles area movie palaces to a generation accustomed to video games. This is a fine way to open eyes limited to those tiny screens to these elegant examples of the giant screens. The eighty-nine color plates are of high quality -- but such canot be said for the eleven pages of text and the captions which are minimalist. For some reason, neither an architectural historian nor even a movie palace buff was chosen for the writing; instead, the photographers chose a man whose breezy style is more flippant than illuminating. His knowledge of local history constitutes the majority of the words, but one learns little about the buildings themselves (a book may have a local target audience, but it need not be oblivious to the larger scope of its subject especially with so many previous books known to the authors). One could dismiss his Introduction as merely perfunctory, but we cannot dismiss his treatment of the captions, for he could there have told us much more in his 'I-love-white-space' captions layouts. For example: Why does their State Theatre on pages 32 and 34 appear very differently? We are not told within the ample space. Page 48 shows the glorious Crystal Fountain the Los Angeles Th. but we are not told whether it is also a water fountain, as its base makes it appear (a good caption tells what the illustration cannot.) A final example is the photo of the El Capitan Th. on page 85 where an ugly giant beam or steel track is shown directly in front of the proscenium, but the caption makes no mention of it -- as though no one would notice it and so they didn't ask the operator about it. It doesn't take great scholarship, just research to properly cover a subject -- picture book or not. See VIEW CAMERA magazine of Jan/Feb. 1995 for the fascinating story behind this book, but do buy the book before too long for the sake of its color photos; such print runs are short and it is not likely to be available again. Incidentally, it is not mentioned in the book, but its title is a play on: THE BEST REMAINING SEATS: The Golden Age Of The Movie Palace (1961 and later printings available here at Amazon) by the late Ben M. Hall, the prime seminal work in the field, and not to be missed for there resides true writing and scholarship.
Love letter to LA's Movie Palaces.......1998-11-04
I really enjoyed the Last Remaining Seats, because it preserves (in photographs) my beloved Movie Palaces of the Mind. The text could be better; but when it comes to magic, pictures speak a thousand words. The memories I have of the Los Angeles Theater belong to my sister -- but this book makes those memories something I, too, can hold. This isn't history; this is pure joy. Buy Last Remaining Seats. Fall in love with movies the way GOD intended for them to be seen. :)

163 designs.......2000-04-11
Sunlight streaming through colored glass, or illuminated from inside in the evening is charming and inspiring. These 163 line drawings are suitable for beginning to intermediate skill levels. There are squares, rectangles, ovals, circles and half circles. Many are floral, some geometric, few are colorized, but the designs are easy to select colors for. They are suited for doorways, transoms, sidelights and window panels. Stained glass windows are a treasure to see, they draw us in when illuminated and seem to glow with the sunlight. This Dover publication is a nice addition to a stained glass book collection.

Book Description
An account of California journalist and wit Ambrose Bierce and his struggle with the railroad "octopus" controlled by "the Big Four" (Collis P. Huntington, Leland Stanford, Charles Crocker, and Mark Hopkins). This is the first book to look at Bierce's early muckraking campaign in depth through Bierce's acid journalism and the railroad's private and public reactions. After a brief literature review and biography of Bierce, one of America's greatest wits, journalists, and short-story writers, the study turns to his thirty-year battle with the Central Pacific Railroad, which controlled much of California's economy and politics, often through bribery of politicians and newspaper editors and publishers. Lindley looks at the initial funding of the railroad through the U.S. government, the development of railroads as symbols of hope and progress, and the eventual corruption of that optimistic outlook by railroad owners and politicians. Bierce attacked the railroads in his columns during his tenure at three San Francisco periodicals, the Argonaut, the Wasp, and the Examiner. His efforts culminated in a trip to Washington, D.C., in 1896 to cover the funding bill debate in Congress, during which railroad officials attempted to avoid repaying millions of dollars in government loans. Bierce did not consider himself a muckraker. He derided the generation of Progressive journalists who followed him a decade after he ended his campaign against the railroad. Yet, Bierce's journalism was a precursor of what is popularly known as the muckraking period, 1902-1914.

With beautiful black-and-white photographs of each of the families, Gay Dads is a moving tribute to familial love.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2007-02-01
Excellent read for anyone that would like to share in the expierence of fatherhood with gay men.
Refreshing and insighful.
A must read for gay men that are thinking of having kids.
A Book For All Future Gay Dads.......2005-04-27
I got this book and started reading the book and I could not put it down. When I got half way through the book I noticed that I was half way done with the book and that I did not want it to end. So now I am only reading 1 story per week so I can make the book last. I hope the author will come out ( no pon Intended) with a sequal.
Even if your not a gay male you will find all the stories heart warming. After reading this I hope you will want to support Same-Sex Marriages.
Gay Dads.......2004-07-19
You can't help but be deeply touched by the stories David Strah so beautifully tells in Gay Dads. This book not only highlights the struggles of creating a family and how different family structures/make up can and do work but more importantly, it demonstrates how love can overcome adversities. Read it and be enlightened.
Beautiful........2004-06-15
I NEVER buy a book when I can just check it out or read it in the store, but I finally just had to get this one after several of the stories caused me to well up right there in the store. David Strah's masterpiece has been brilliantly crafted, with each story showing how strong love can be. I only wish it came it hardback.
Excellent book with dynamic photos!.......2003-07-30
Like the other reviewers of this book, I also feel it was a page turner and beautifully written. I bought the book based on the reviews I read from this site and am happy to say it was worth every penny! David Straw has a gift for story telling. He shares the tales of 24 families and tells us how they each became a family. The methods range from international adoptions to co-parenting with a lesbian couple. The photographs are brilliant. I had to hold back from choking on tears several times because the pictures were so touching. Straw covers his own family's story in the last chapter. His kids are insanely cute! I guarantee this book is a must-read, something for everyone, gay, straight, married, or single, whatever, you will love it!
Book Description
During World War II, James A. Huston served as an operations officer in the 3rd Battalion, 134th Infantry, a unit that helped to liberate or capture dozens of cities across France, Belgium, and Germany. From July 1944 through April 1945, the regiment captured 8,974 prisoners of war and covered more than 1,500 combat miles, but lost 10,046 men in the process. "Biography of a Battalion" recreates the action and provides an account of the war from one soldier who lived through it.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent history from perspective of a front-line officer.......2003-03-10
This book is an excellent source of historical information for anyone interested in the history of the 35th Division during WWII. The author is a trained historian and he also served as a battalion commander with the 134th Inf. Regiment, 35th Division during the war (he was actually involved in many of the battles which he describes so vividly in this book). I highly recommend this book.
A great book to include in a family's history.......2003-01-24
For anyone who served or whose family served in the 134th Infantry Battalion of the 3rd Army (Gen. Patton's), this is a hair raising daily account of where your loved one's greatest moments took place. This writer provides a foot soldier's perspective with a Phd. in history to skillfully record the World's greatest war and greatest battle (Battle of the Bulge). A must read for anyone whose loved one experienced WWII but, who as my father, was reticent to relive their story to their family.

Description:
A study was conducted to evaluate the performance of six advanced wastewater treatment facilities using biological nutrient removal processes as the primary mechanism for removing carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus from domestic wastewater. One year of operating data was obtained from monthly operating reports provided by the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) in Atlanta. Additional information about facility operations and the types of chemicals used was gathered through review of EPD files and interviews with plant personnel. Data evaluated were: influent and effluent five-day Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD"5); influent and effluent total suspended solids (TSS); influent Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen and effluent Total Nitrogen; and influent and effluent Total Phosphorus (TP). Although varying from plant to plant, effluent requirements for BOD"5, TSS, ammonia, and TP were met. Chemicals utilized, design capacity, and monthly effluent concentrations are presented in this study.

Description:
In 2001, to foster the practical development of constructed wetlands (CWs) used for domestic wastewater treatment in Turkey, vertical subsurface flow constructed wetlands (30m^2 of each) were implemented on the campus of the METU, Ankara, Turkey. The main objective of the research was to quantify the effect of different filter media on the treatment performance of vertical flow wetlands in the prevailing climate of Ankara. Thus, a gravel-filled wetland and a blast furnace granulated iron slag-filled wetland were operated identically with primarily treated domestic wastewater (3m^3d^-^1) at a hydraulic loading rate of 0.100md^-^1, intermittently. Both of the wetland cells were planted with Phragmites australis. According to the first year results, average removal efficiencies for the slag and gravel wetland cells were as follows: total suspended solids (TSS) (63% and 59%), chemical oxygen demand (COD) (47% and 44%), NH"4^+-N (88% and 53%), total nitrogen (TN) (44% and 39%), PO"4^3^--P (44% and 1%) and total phosphorus (TP) (45% and 4%). The treatment performances of the slag-filled wetland were better than that of the gravel-filled wetland in terms of removal of phosphorus and production of nitrate. Since this study was a pioneer for implementation of subsurface constructed wetlands in Turkey using local sources, it has proved that this eco-technology could also be used effectively for water quality enhancement in Turkey.

Description:
A new compact wastewater treatment system for use in single houses has been constructed in eastern Norway. The system is based on the principles of sub-surface flow constructed wetlands using various types of Filtralite as filter media. It consists of a septic tank followed by an aerobic biofilter succeeded by an upflow saturated filter. The aerobic biofilter is essential to remove organic matter and achieve nitrification, while the upflow filter polishes the wastewater and removes microorganisms and phosphorus. During the first 3 years of operation, the system has show stable and high removal with the following average values measured from the outlet of septic tank to the outlet of the upflow filter: 97.0%-BOD"7, 30%-N, 99.4%-P, and 70.8%-SS. No Escherichia coli or somatic coliphages have been detected in the effluent. Due to considerable removal of organic mater, nutrients, and pathogens, the effluent will not negatively affect water and soil ecosystems. The system requires low maintenance and is designed to remove phosphorus for 5 years before renewal of the upflow filter media. When saturated with phosphorus, the media is a suitable fertilizer for plant production.

The aim of this work was to assess the efficacy for simultaneous enhanced removal of nitrogen and phosphorus including organics treating combined wastewater generated from a chemical laboratory using a bench-scale Intermittent Cyclic Process Bio-reactor (ICPBR). The performance efficacy indicated that the ICPBR system with solid retention time of 15 days achieved optimum efficiency with an overall removal of ammonia nitrogen (NH"4-N), phosphorus (PO"4-P), and chemical oxygen demand (COD) in the range, 83-92%, 74-93%, and 90-96%, respectively.

Description:
In this investigation, diurnal variations in contaminant removal in high rate ponds (HRP) treating urban wastewater were evaluated. Two experimental HRPs (surface area 1.54m^2 and depth 0.3m), each with a clarifier in series (surface area 0.025m^2), were operated in parallel with different hydraulic retention times (3-10 days) but with the same environmental conditions over a period of one year. The operating strategies adopted only yielded a significant overall difference in removal between the two HRPs for nutrients. Effluent total suspended solids and chemical oxygen demand were slightly higher at midday than at dawn, while for total nitrogen and total phosphorous the concentrations were slightly higher at dawn. All these differences were related to the diurnal changes of DO and pH. The main conclusion of this work is that the diurnal variations of the contaminant concentrations in HRPs do not seriously affect their reliability in treating wastewater.

Description:
This contribution summarizes the nutrient and metal removal of a free water surface constructed wetland, compares it with the previous small-scale prototype and discusses the observed differences. Several locally available macrophyte species were transplanted into the wetland. Eichhornia crassipes (water hyacinth) showed a fast growth and it soon became dominant, attaining 80% cover of the wetland surface. Typha domingensis (cattail) and Panicum elephantipes (elephant panicgrass) developed as accompanying species attaining 14 and 4% cover. The wetland removed 86% of Cr and 67% of Ni. Zn concentrations were below 50@mgl^-^1 in most samplings. The FeS precipitation probably caused the high retention of Fe (95%). The outcoming water was anoxic in most samplings. Phosphate and ammonium were not retained within the wetland while 70% and 60% of the incoming nitrate and nitrite were removed. Large denitrification losses are suggested. Cr, Ni and Zn were retained by the macrophytes in the larger wetland and in sediment in the small-scale one. Differences in the retention mechanism of the two wetlands are discussed.

Description:
The potential of three floating aquatic macrophytes to improve the water quality of anaerobically digested flushed dairy manure wastewater (ADFDMW) was evaluated. In undiluted ADFDMW (total chemical oxygen demand 2010mg/l), growth of water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) was inhibited and both pennywort (Hydrocotyle umbellata) and water lettuce (Pistia stratiotes) failed to grow. In a 1:1 dilution of ADFDMW, all three plants grew successfully. However, growth of pennywort and water lettuce was limited while water hyacinth growth was robust. High salinity appears to be the principal reason for inhibition, as well as possibly uncharacterized soluble compounds. In terms of reductions in nutrients, chemical oxygen demand (COD), solids and salinity, water hyacinth performed better than water lettuce and pennywort in diluted ADFDMW. Reduction in nutrients and COD followed first-order kinetics, with water hyacinth exhibiting the highest rates. For water hyacinth, total Kjeldahl nitrogen was reduced by 91.7%, ammonium by 99.6%, total phosphorus by 98.5%, and soluble reactive phosphorus by 96.5% in 31-day batch growth. A polyculture of the three plant species in 1:1 diluted ADFDMW exhibited the next best performance. The high biomass yield of the diluted water hyacinth culture corresponded with high EC and Na^+ reductions, suggesting that EC measurement might be a simple tool to monitor performance of water hyacinth growth and nutrient reduction under high plant growth rate conditions.
