Looking Forward to Getting Back.......2000-01-04

If one picture is worth a 1,000 words then this book makes bracingly clear the visual and visceral impact of the New York World's Fair of 1939.

Indeed, it is a fine companion to "Dream of Venus (Or Living Pictures)," a clever novel set in the New York World's Fair of 1939 also available from Amazon.

Dear Reader - I've been searching for books on World's Fairs and Expositions without much success. Can you tell me of some of the titles in your collection, the publishers and where you purchased them. Nice to know someone else has a passion for these events.

This book started my love with the World's Fair.......1999-03-17

I received this book not long after it came out in the 1970's. It is a book of photographs from the Wurts Brothers who were famous architectural photographers of the period. It has many photos that are not in other world's fair books, including a number that were taken during the construction of the fair. Most of the photographs are very beautiful (but no color photos) and many pictures of architectural details are included. Very nice book. It was the first item in what became my world's fair collection.

A one-of-a-kind photo book for dog lovers.......2007-05-14

Almost every page of this book is filled with heart-warming photos of how amazing dogs are in their behavior, talents, appearances, and ways they communicate their love for LIFE itself. If you are familiar with LIFE magazine's photography and their uniqueness to show true LIFE in action and the humor and warmth of life itself, then this book is what you can use to cheer up your day and entertain your family, and sit on your coffee table for your guests to enjoy. It' not just a book filled with cute photos of dogs. It's a bog about dogs in action and their love of LIFE. Amazing photography.

GREAT SPONTANEOUS PHOTOGRAPHY!.......2001-12-14

It is often said that in order to take a phenominal photograph, one has to be in the right place at the right time. Some of these photos, were obviously taken at the spur of the moment by someone who was indeed at the right place at the right time. Any book put out by Life Magazine immediately captures my attention and this one was no exception. While there are many spontaneous shots here, there were also several that looked just too "posed and stiff for my liking." For example, there is one of a white poodle posing for the camera that looks cute in a book, but you better hope the guy never takes off out the back door and heads for the woods! His brushed out poodle cut rather resembles one of Dolly Parton's wigs. My preference is natural photographs that are taken when one least expects the click of the shutter and, thankfully, there are several of those here as well. This is not one of my favourite books on canine photography, but it is still one worth having.

In the early 1890s American journalist Elizabeth L. Banks became an international phenomenon through a series of newspaper articles aptly titled "Campaigns of Curiosity." Following the lead of pioneering woman journalist Nellie Bly, Banks gained notoriety through undercover assignments as a "stunt girl." Disguising herself in various (and often hilariously inappropriate) costumes, Banks investigated and made public the working conditions of women in London. Writing from the perspective of an unrepentant American girl, she explored and exposed a variety of employment, ranging from parlor maid to flower girl to American heiress. Through her writings, Banks demonstrated the capability of women for positions in newsrooms and other traditionally male journalistic spaces to which women sought entry. For her efforts, which originally were only to support her while she made attempts at serious journalism, Banks became the subject of poems and songs and acquired instant fame.

Originally published in 1894, this autobiography offers insights into the development of women journalists and the cultural discourses and subsequent rhetorical practices of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Banks's autobiography is one of the few-if not the only-complete works of 1890s women's stunt journalism in print.

Read this book during pregnancy.......2003-05-06

This book is helpful if you read it in the beginning of pregnancy. It does a lot of cheerleading for you to get the most out of your employer for maternity leave but lacks specific instructions or advice. I was looking for ways to get the most out of the maternity leave I was already on and the book did not fit my needs.

Read BEFORE your leave!!! Like in your 2nd trimester!.......2002-01-10

This book is good to read if you have not yet even thought about your maternity leave yet, like in your 2nd trimester of pregnancy. However, if you've already got some idea of what you're doing, or if you're already on leave (like myself), then it really doesn't have a lot of info for you. Really, the parts that I found most helpful in my situation were just emotional anecdotes about how crazy you feel at this time in your life - it's just nice to know someone else feels the way I do. The answer to the question the title seems to ask ("how do I make the most of my maternity leave?") is really given as "Don't expect to get anything accomplished on your leave. Just take care of that baby." Well, I think there are better suggestions out there than that. (If I may be so presumptuous, I'll add my own advice - Get the baby on a tight 3-4 hour feeding schedule. Keep a pen and paper by your chair where you feed the baby. While the baby's feeding, make a list of things you want to get done. That way you at least know when you can do things, and when you have that time, you know what needs to be done. It's working for me!)

The book does offer some facts about leaves of absence and ideas about alternative child care and work arrangements, but this was knowledge I already had, at my stage of the game. The title of the book should have been "The Best Friend's Guide to Maternity Leave: PLANNING FOR Your Precious Time at Home."

(Another note, and this is a pet peeve: the author takes literary license and writes with sentence fragments, which is fine in small doses. However, there are so many examples of this in the book that it makes it very distracting/awkward to read in some places....)

I think the book is great for what it discuses but the problem was that even though the title Says modeling the M113 series it is primarily modern and Canadian equipment. So if your work on a Nam era Cav M113 this will be of no help.

What a relief: Modern Armor! And by a good teacher........2006-10-15

I own most of the Osprey Modelling series, but this is the first time I got so excited after two chapters I jumped onto the internet searching for the kits he used. I found 'em! Graeme Davidson is a fine modeller and a good teacher. The photographs of his progress through each "kit-bash" are beautiful, and clear. His writing is also clear, and encouraging. Each project is rated for difficulty, starting with the two "easiest" ones I want to try.

The reason I stated 'relief' in the title: since I first drifted into armor modelling from my former preoccupation with aircraft I've become a little weary of the black-and-white world of WW 2, all the blessed TIGER kits, and even The Shermans, which I had always liked.

Mr. Davidson has helped to open a way out of that for me. If you want to build something fresh in the world of AFVs this book will help. Get one and get started!

Insight on 3 Villains of History.......2003-05-31

This book consists of biographies/medical histories of the three dictators Napoleon, Hitler and Stalin. Of the three, perhaps Napoleon comes across as the better man, but considering the other two that he is compared against, that is not much of a compliment.
What struck me about all three men was their utter ruthlessness and greed for power. Napoleon sacrificed his army in hopeless wars without any remorse, along with Hitler and Stalin. But Hitler and Stalin also participated directly in the murder of innocent civilians for reasons that only could make sense to someone hungry for power and paranoid to the extreme.
Dr. Neumayr reviews their lives, their physical ailments, and to a certain extent their mental health. But by no means is this a book that rambles on with page after page of suppositions and hastily drawn conclusions. To be sure, the mental health of all three is questioned, but were they insane? After reading about the millions of lives that these men took, and the misery caused for their countries, it is even more chilling to know that they knew exactly what they were doing.
All three paid the price for their murder, deceit and immorality. Dr Neumayr examines their physical health, and toward the end of their lives they all suffered from many physical ailments, some directly caused by the stress that their ambitions placed on them. But the suffering they had was as nothing compared to the suffering they caused.
I have also read Dr. Neumayer's three-volume biography/medical history of the great classical music composers. If your interest in famous people goes beyond learning a few facts about their lives, then these books will certainly be of interest to you. Highly recommended!
