    Book Description

As the country heads into the non-stop madness of a presidential election, there is nothing that it needs more than a dose of Tom Tomorrow's social and political satire. Read by more than twenty million readers, Tomorrow has his finger on the pulse of the times, to enthrall or enrage - and occasionally both - with his work. When Penguins Attack!!! brings back Sparky (the most dyspeptic cartoon animal in the business) and the rest of the cast as Tomorrow casts his perenially jaundiced eye on politics, the media, social trends, and everything else. So sit back and settle in, for Tomorrow is the cartoonist for today.

    Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Same old same OLD.......2003-09-17

Tom Tomorrow writes "Family Circus" for Left-leaning folks. Both strips present pretty much the same old stuff over and over, using a limited number of templated formats. (Bill Keane: the ghost of "Not Me", Tom Tomorrow: three pannels of 1950s business guy spouting nonsense followed by penguin saying "you are spouting nonsense".) Both strips give their target audience nice, warm fuzzy re-enforcement ("Ah... cute little family" vs. "Ah... people that disagree with me are stupid")

See page 6 of the "sample content" TT actually describes one of his templates. I suppose he realizes that it won't really hurt his sales, the strip isn't about cleverness or humor so much as comforting group identification.

5 out of 5 stars Tom Tomorrow is a National Treasure.......2002-11-05

Nobody is safe from the barbs of Sparky, the cynical penguin who's had it with Didactic Republicans and Wimp Democrats. Easily the worlds wordiest cartoon, This Modern World is a strong dose of cynicism towards the White House, Congress, and the corporations that employ them both.

I'm sure the work of Tom Tomorrow will be one of the first things John Ashcroft has burned.

Sorry, did that raise your Red White and Blue hackles? Think Tom isn't a "REAL" American? Things have gotten to the point that criticism is considered traitorous? Then this book is for you.

    4 out of 5 stars Cool comic.......2002-07-10

If you're into social and political commentary, this comic is for you.

Tomorrow personally takes a lefty stance but he drops daisy cutters on the hypocrisy of politicians and his depiction of a snarling Cheney is enough to give you a coronary from laughing. Of course, Cheney's not in this book, since it's like from 98 to 2000.

He also does a good job of ripping on consumerism, though he's kind of barking up a false tree, like most people who rail against consumerism.

Overall, I look forward to reading this guy every Monday when he publishes. This book is a pretty good collection of his works, views, etc.

4 out of 5 stars Tom has turned cynicism into a good, well crafted art form.......2000-09-12

These are his cartoons from 1998-early 2000. Relive the mind-numbing media orgy of that intern scandal, in the best way; through his eyes. Examine Tom Tommorrow moving past the threshold of sanity towards a surreal state of constructive cynicism. And it's all your fault! With all your force fed hype on that White House whore(who's name I can't utter due to perminent suppression), Y2K and all the other media tripe. You'll find his sarcastic, biting, cynicism from the introduction to the "about the author" page. All so very theripuetic. It's the biggest breakthrough since primal scream therapy.

He also is the most informed and enlightened cartoonist in the country. Genius is so underrated. Pick up any of his books and see for yourself.

As well as including Sherley's own account of his journey into Persia in 1600, this valuable edition includes the main works dealing with Anthony Sherley and his life. Original inaccessible texts are reprinted in full and the critical bibliographical introduction provides excellent guidance for the understanding of the various sources (and their merits and limitations), and the context in which Sherley's own account was composed.
When first published in 1933, Sherley's narrative (1613) had never before been reprinted.

                Book Description

How we raise children to be compassionate, and healthy individuals in a world that is stressful, commercialized and violent is a challenge we all face. Educator, parent and activist JoAnn Farb offers practical suggestions on raising your children to honor your values and not those dictated by advertisers and corporations. Farb shows you how you can create an environment where your children think for themselves, deliver sound judgements, and make thoughtful choices. She presents vital information on giving your children the best start in life: from conscious pregnancy, to giving birth with the minimum of medical intervention, breastfeeding, playing, living in community, and making informed decisions about vaccination and homeschooling.

                Customer Reviews:

                5 out of 5 stars A compelling read.......2003-09-23

A friend of mine, who is a little into things on the fringe, suggested that I read this book. I must admit, that prior to reading Compassionate Souls I was very critical of the choices that my friend was making. It seemed that everything that she was doing with her children, flew in the face of what everyone else I knew was doing, and what every magazine article or book on parenting or health I had ever read advised.

Yet this book has definately changed my thinking. I no longer think that sleeping with one's baby will make them overly dependent. I am no longer fearful about my friend's decision to not vaccinate her children (nor do I veiw her choice to not vaccinate as a threat to me) in fact I am regretting that I did not look into this issue more fully when my own children were younger and I was being sold on shot after shot. I find myself wondering too, if some of the horrible illnesses my children had shortly after getting shots were caused by the shots (something I never even considered related before) I have began to make some small changes in what I am feeding my family (and found the recipes in the back of the book --especially the vegan caesar salad dressing, the Green Rice, and Jojo's baked potatoes absolutely incredible!!

Although I could never see myself homeschooling, I now realize that there many more benefits to it for children and families then I ever realized, and was amazed to learn that some people do it for reasons other then religious convictions and that they really made a lot of sense to me.

The first chapter, On Becoming a Parent, really drew me in. In light of all that has been happening, politically, socially, educationally in our country lately, I am finding myself questioning why, with so many conveniences, and benefits to our culture, families and children seem to be struggling with life more then ever?

Compassionate Souls has really been an eye opener for me. Thank you Ms Farb for writing this and sharing so much about your life and your extensive research with me. My only regret is that I didn't get a hold of your book earlier -- when I would have had more chances to act on your compelling information.

2 out of 5 stars If you're looking at this book, you don't need it.......2003-07-24

I bought this book because I agreed with most of its principles-- natural birth, breastfeeding, conscious decision-making. But I expected to find research in it to help me discuss some decisions with my husband. I was very disappointed to learn that, although Farb seems to be capable of scientific research, she doesn't present any *objective* research in the book. She only presents one side of MANY issues, often beating ideas into the ground instead of providing solid facts to back them.

I get it, breastfeeding is good, mainstream media is bad, some doctors are bad. But I found myself defending the other sides of these issues while reading just to give them a fair shake. For example, I'm vegetarian and plan to raise my baby the same. Farb writes as if vegetarians and meat-eaters are entirely irresponsible or unaware, and that veganism is the only way. Though I believe in veganism and its benefits, the chapter on veganism didn't help me at all to see its merits, nor did it provide a healthy plan for vegan pregnancy and babies. I only saw Farb's broad opinions (many of which are shared by vegetarians and some meat-eaters alike). The vaccination chapter is full of errors and leaps of logic as well.

The result is that this reads more like a journal of Farb's personal pregnancy and child-rearing than a tool to help others make decisions. I'm glad these ideas are out there in book form, but I wish Farb provided more than her opinions and experience. As it is, she's told me nothing I don't already know more about from my own research, and her one-sided presentation has given my husband the impression that some of these issues *have* no good objective reasoning behind them.

Look elsewhere for defendable "how to be hippie parents" material. I am thrilled by Barbara Kingsolver's "Small Wonder," personal essays that present conscious earth-friendly issues factually without being preachy.

3 out of 5 stars Intro to some "Alternative" parenting practices.......2002-04-13

On the outside it looks like this book is an introduction to what I consider the right things to do: homebirth, breastfeeding, selectively vaccinating (if at all), vegan diet, homeschooling. I found her personal methods of discipline pretty disturbing, though she does admit that perhaps they aren't for everyone. Physically restraining a child so that they will cry and eventually give up and submit to the adult restraining them is a technique used with children with severe behavioral problems. Children who have gone through this report that this "horse-breaking" style of discipline is pretty undermining to their confidence. I think a better book is "The Natural Child: Parenting from the Heart" by Jan Hunt or Joseph Chilton Pearce's "Magical Child." Other great introductions to "alternative" parenting: Mothering magazine and their "Natural Family Living" book.
I felt Farb mentions some great parenting/lifestyle choices that are available (the vegan section is very helpful) but there is a core element of HEART missing somehow.

                5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2001-12-20

Ok, so I'm a new mother. EVERYONE is giving me unsolicited advice. But some of what I'm hearing just doesn't jive with my gut. But hey what do I know? I'm twenty something, not an expert on anything. The doctors are trying to scare the (...) out of me if I don't bow down to their fancy degrees....So I didn't go through med school....but still I'm not stupid!!

Then I find this book. A great read! An easy read! Farb did what I wish I had done BEFORE I even got pregnant. Man oh man oh man....after reading Compassionate Souls an awful lot is starting to make sense. It's a whole other way of looking at life, parenting, doctors, food, baby shots, birth...yada yada yada.

                I AM NOT ALONE!

There is a better way, a smart way, to raise children, to keep them from having allergies, ear infections, diabetes, asthma (I happen to know several families whose kids have these!!)

But what is really cool...my man and I we read a chapter each night out loud and then discussed it. It's really been a great forum to grow as a couple.

                5 out of 5 stars Fabulous advice!.......2001-07-11

I just finished this book and was so happy I picked it up! Far from finding the author "preachy" or "judgmental," I found her simply informative and genuine. I enjoyed the segments about a Vegan pregnancy and how to handle misinformed doctors (of which I've seen my share). I was enlightened by the author's experience with midwives, her views on hospitals and being treated as a body part by doctors and nurses. I was pleased she shared the struggles she endured trying to do the best things possible for her family, despite opposition from outside influences. I appreciated the advice on how to handle relatives and other outsiders disrespectful of her parenting choices. It was encouraging to know there are others who view the world as I do, and I don't have to forge my way in the dark. This book was edifying, affirming and inspirational for me.

The Landsknecht (meaning 'servant of the country') flourished during a key period for military organisation and practice. In the late 15th century, the Holy Roman Emperor, Maximilian I, recruited thousands of mercenaries from Central and Northern Europe, with the aim of creating a reliable source of men for his armies – and the Landsknecht were born. This book reveals the true-life experiences of the Landsknecht soldier, using numerous first-hand accounts. It takes a close look at the recruitment, training, daily life and and careers of these formidable soldiers, and examines in detail their clothing, equipment and weaponry. Many fine, contemporary illustrations, some drawn by Landsknecht themselves, accompany the text.

5 out of 5 stars The first modern Army.......2006-07-10

Richards provides an excellent account of the Landsknecht mercenaries of the renaissance in this work. I particularly enjoyed his section on the structure of a Landsknecht regiment and the officers that led it- the roles of the nachrichter and hurenweibel were quite amusing. Richards certainly proves in this work that the Landsknechts were the first to make use of a modern regimental structure. He also goes into vivid detail describing the Landsknecht costume. I have only one major complaint- Richards spends almost no time in detailing the weapons of the Landsknecht or their battle tactics. He does briefly mention (in the caption of an illustration), the significance of the katzbalger, a Landsknecht's favourite sword, and in his colour plates displays the tactics of a regiment during a battle, but he doesn't write much on either subject. Nonetheless the book was very enjoyable, and worth buying if you're keen on the subject.

4 out of 5 stars Transports you to the life of the Renaissance Mercenary.......2003-08-12

John Richards and Gerry Embleton make a nice team in this new title for the Osprey Warrior series LANDSKNECHT SOLDIER 1486-1560, if you ever wonder the origin of this Servant of the Country this is one of the best intro to the subject, the famous Landsknecht were one of the best infantry soldiers of the Renaissance,Mercenary Pikemen was one of the deadliest weapon on the field without forgetting their famous and colorful clothes.

I think that the content of the book is pretty well done as all Osprey books in 64 pages they try to give the most important info from the Origins of the Landsknecht, organization, army life, religion, costume( one of the most important part) and the decline. In a nice weekend you can seat a relax a travel back in time to the days of the "BAD WAR". Nicely Illustrated by Gerry Embleton which famous illustration and knowledge on the subject make the book complete, he have some works on the subject his book Medieval Military Costume is also illustrated by him and with many colour photographs of real models.

A Nice read if you looking for the everyday life of these formidable soldiers of the late 15th century you will find it fascinating. For more Renaissance warfare the book from Thomas Arnold "The Renaissance at War" explore in more detail the wars of this period with alot of maps and Illustration, Osprey have alot of titles on the subject Armies of the German Peasants War 1524-26 by Douglas Miller and Angus McBride and Pavia 1525 are some of the titles you would enjoy if you like to read about the German mercenaries. Lets hope for more titles like this specially on the Swiss, Spanish Tercios and Italian mercenaries.

                    Book Description

Genetics and its related technologies are revolutionizing the world. The media is regularly dominated by controversy over the latest genetically modified (GM) food, human gene therapy or cancer chip technology. Maverick scientists are in the process of cloning humans, and the human genome sequence is available on the Internet. Fifty years ago we did not know what a gene was; today the awesome power of genetics is being released on an unsuspecting public, and with it a whole series of ethical dilemmas undreamt of even ten years ago. The question now has become not "can we?" but "should we?" By demystifying genetic engineering and exploring the basic biology of the living world, A Terrible Beauty is Born explains how clones and cloning technology are in many ways extensions of processes that occur constantly in nature. Used wisely these processes have the potential to bring enormous benefits; abused, they carry with them potential dangers that we ignore at our peril.
