Book Description
What makes a loft smart? This book presents the extraordinary designs of recently completed lofts that highlight three kinds of smart solutions. Through smart technology, a variety of electronic devices attend to your needs while in the loft, and carry on a variety of necessary functions while you're away. Smart materials provide solutions through newly invented building materials and innovative twists on traditional ones. And smart design is used by ingenious architects with difficult design challenges to transcend these problems and create spectacular lofts, often on a very modest budget.

Summer Vegetables to Fungi - For Beginners Like Me!.......2000-11-21
This book compiles a wide variety of photos of finished artworks by author/artist. Watercolor is done with a light, loose touch. I have several floral books which are "realistic" in technique. Trying to do small details realistically, either drives you crazy or you love it. If you love detail, but want to loosen up alittle without looking messy in your technique, this book has some good examples. The book doesn't give detailed "step by step" illustrations but it is fairly easy to see how most of the effects were achieved.

A great prayer book; a must have!.......2007-09-19
Whether you want to get a more steady form of Prayer, or if you just want to grow closer to God, this book is one of the best ways to do it. I first encountered this "Four Week Psalter" when I was on a Retreat, and the first time I prayed it, I immediately fell in love with it's beauty and incredible simplicity.
This book will help you to enhance your Prayer Life through a lovley, shorter form of the Liturgy of the Hours.
If you liked this book, see my review forDrink of the Stream: Prayers of Carmelites

Book Description
Many of us have lost hope of ever developing a liturgical prayer life. We love the Mass but we don't know how to extend the liturgy to the rest of our day. We have heard of the Liturgy of the Hours, but it seems so complicated, with all its flipping of pages to find the right psalms, hymns, responsories, canticles, and readings!
Now there's an answer. In response to the Holy Father's encouragement for the laity to pray the Liturgy of the Hours, this beautiful edition (approved by the Church) makes praying Sunday Evening Prayer a breeze! Each Sunday of the year is laid outstart to finishon two facing pages. Praying the Liturgy of the Hours couldn't be easier!
Customer Reviews:
A Great Blessing!.......2005-01-19
Prayer has always been an important tool for anyone of the faith. Prayers sung only increases the depth of one's prayer life, and brings us closer to our Creator.
In this work, we have laid out for us an entire year of Sunday Vespers.
The work is concise and easy to use, no flipping through pages in confusion; each Sunday Vesper is clearly marked, written on two adjoining pages, so the book can be opened and easily followed by all those joining in prayer.
This is a must have for those who wish to join in with others around the world in prayer and unity. A great work that the entire family, friends and fellow prayer companions, can follow along and share in the experience
A beautiful book and a great aid to your prayer life. Recommended!
Sunday Vespers.......2004-11-10
This is a beautiful book!!! It is easy to follow with specific prayers for each Sunday evening. This is a great way to start your week off right adding to your Sunday mass but in a more intimate setting praying together as a family.
Great Prayer Resource.......2004-10-29
When I first heard of this book I immediately wrote to the publishers asking where I could buy it from in England UK! Now I have my own copy and am thrilled with it's very beautiful presentation and practical usefulness as a way of joining in the world-wide prayer of the Church on Sunday evenings. It's a small but significat way to help keep Sunday special, making time in the evening to pray. It's a great aid for my husband and I, newly married. We're looking forward to praying Sunday Vespers with a family in due course. I sincerely hope this book gets the attention and notice it so rightly deserves.
The Right Book at the Right Time.......2004-10-27
Be you Catholic or Christian (as this book was designed and was meant for -- but it is not limited to -- Catholics) you will find The Evening Prayerbook: Sunday Vespers a unique and great (as well as beautiful) resource and addition to your prayer life.
For Catholics, it has always been the tradition of the Church to make the Psalms the main texts through which Her voice is heard. Thus, the Psalms are intimately intertwined in the Church's Liturgy and prayers throughout the year, as the 150 Psalms flow from one liturgical season to the other. Christians whose love for the Bible is great, recognize together with Catholics the voice of Christ Himself in the Psalms, speaking to the Father and teaching us to pray. The Psalms, then, are central to the life of the Church. Their prayer and recital, mostly by monks and religious, have been, throughout the ages the pulse -- an indication as it were -- of the health of the Mystical Body of Christ marking the beating of the Body's Heart in their regularity and beautiful cycles. If the Church in Her Wisdom considers the Psalms essential to Her Life requiring Her priests and religious to recite them daily in the Liturgy of the Hours, should we not think about them in the same way?
I find Evening Prayers: Sunday Vespers a beautiful, easy to use resource to pray within the family in union with the Church. Beyond the time devoted to Mass and the Liturgy on Sundays one can, through Sunday Vespers, sing to God the Father the love of God the Son "in the words Our Saviour gave us" (and in a beautiful format!). This book is a great way to pray and be heard for no words spoken to God are more effective than those inspired by Himself. I deeply recommend the Evening Prayers: Sunday Vespers to all.

Lengthening Shadows Before Nightfall
ASIN: 0967248426 |
Book Description
In Life's Evening Hour, photographer John Dugdale invites us to explore liminal territory - the real between sight and blindness, between day and night, between physical and emotional. Celebrated for his imaginative use of the 19th century cyanotype process, Dugdale's blue images are distinct for their subtle and lyrical quality as well as their emotional resonance. In 1993 Dugdale lost 80 percent of his sight to an HIV-related illness, but has continued to pursue his art, as his creative vision has only grown stronger. This book bears witness to the photographs he created from the onset of his blindness to the present through Dugdale's photographs and words. The design of Life's Evening Hour complements the thoughtful nature of the photographs, and making reference to personal journals and common prayer books, the slipcase, clothbound binding, fine printing and papers as well as ribbon to mark pages distinguish this book as a high-quality collection of a unique photographer's work.
Customer Reviews:
"Hope Is The Thing With Feathers".......2004-03-04
When I look at these haunting photographs, words that come to mind are "serene," "fragile," "gentle," "tranquil," "elegiac." These 52 photogaphs are cyanotypes printed in a beautiful shade of blue, an appropriate color for the mood and subject matter of these images. John Dugdale lost all sight in one eye and has only 20% vision in the other, the results of CMV caused by HIV. Most of these photographs are of still lifes, Mr. Dugdale's friends and family and himself. The models are invariably posed nude. "This is why I continually photograph people nude, to show that in and under the skin we are all much the same." Only one or two photographs were done before Mr. Dugdale's blindness. He now shoots with an 8 x 10 camera and gets help from friends in focusing. Most of the photographs, all of which, cover a full page of the book, are accompanied with text by the photographer. He also includes scripture from the Book or Common Prayer as well as poetry by Emily Dickinson. Lines such as "We grow accustomed to the Dark-- When Light is put away" and "And then the Windows failed--and then/I could not see to see" from two of the poems are appropriate to describe the photos.
Mr. Dugdale obviously has lived through what Ms. Dickinson would call "the hour of lead" and quietly triumphs. He I think would agree with the poet that "hope is the thing with feathers." Even though he misses most not being able to read and to see other people's eyes, he still buys books "for the day I may be able to read them again."
Viewing these beautiful photographs will strengthen your faith in the gentle courage of this artist and in his ability to prevail under great adversity.
A Beautiful World.......2000-07-02
John Dugdale's latest book of cyanotype photographs portrays both the beauty that surrounds the photographer, and the hope that can be found through love, friendship, and prayer. In fact, Life's Evening Hour isn't simply a book of photographs. Using photography and narration, Dugdale lets the viewer into his world, showing what matters most in a personal, reflective, and oftentimes heartbreaking way. Poems by Emily Dickinson and passages from the Bible are woven throughout Dugdale's journey, as we follow his story. The pages reveal Dugdale's battle with AIDS and how he relied not only on the unending support of family and friends, but on the power of faith to heal. His affliction rendered him eighty-percent blind, although this only made his photographic vision stronger; he quotes Emerson, "You see through your eyes, not with them." Dugdale's photographs portray those who stood by in good times and bad. Bible passages and poems by Dickinson appear on several pages paralleling metaphorically, the images on opposite pages. Dugdale's own explanations of his photographs are written in diary-like form, in which he comments on the people in his photographs - all those who have touched his life in some way. Whether photographing a still life or people, subject matter is more important to Dugdale than it would be for other photographers, simply because Dugdale is literally in love with what he photographs. The emotional attachment Dugdale has with his subjects only makes his images stronger, and the viewer is rewarded with photographs that go beyond the boundaries of photography. Life's Evening Hour is a beautiful world comprised of fifty-two photographs, and one can only feel honored to experience John Dugdale's world of imagery.
VISION FROM TRUE DEPTHS.......2000-07-01
John Dugdale's annealing experiences of AIDS, a stroke, and near-total blindness would immobilize most photographers to the point of permanent incapacity. In "Life's Evening Hour," we see the results of an artist rising above the situations life has dealt, and the blue-tinted cyanotype photographs are remarkable for their subject matter and compositional strength. They face appropriate texts from such sources as Dugdale's own expressive and spiritual writings, Emily Dickinson, or the Psalms, which he asserts were literal life-savers. Many nude images feature Dugdale's own body and his striking, appealing face and deep eyes. This subject matter is less-skilled hands could become maudlin; but here, we see an artist near the height of his considerable creative powers using devastating experiences to inform the rest of us, who often see our circumstances considerably less well than John Dugdale. Additional work by text editor Shields Remine contribute to the beauty of the texts; the production standards by publisher August Press are high and reflect the craftsmanship of the book's content (particularly the touches of a bookmark ribbon, and the front-cover cyanotype inset of the artist). This is altogether a work of the first water, without a misstep.

Pilgrim Jäger Vol. 3
ASIN: 158655557X |
Book Description
As the faces of the tarot are revealed one by one, the spiral of history draws tighter. What parts will Michelangelo, the Medici family and Francis Xavier possibly play in this dramatic story? And what of Adele and Karin? Will Adele's multiple personalities be drawn out to cataclysmic effect?
Customer Reviews:
Holy Goodness.......2005-01-12
This manga shines as an example of how manga SHOULD be done.
My favorite aspect of Pilgrim Jager is that it manages to have smart, strong, sexy female main characters that you can respect. These women have genuine personality, they're not flakey chicks who do nothing more than parade around in short skirts, needing to be saved by a high school zero-turned-hero.
I was also very impressed that it uses the occult without being cheesy or overly dramatic. The fights scenes are interesting. The art is BEAUTIFUL.
And if you have any interest at all in the art of tarot, this will definitely be up your alley.
So talented.
Nice Flow.......2005-01-10
This is a fun blend of art and history. It's not very original or thought-provoking, and I wouldn't call it a favorite work, but the style is beautiful and I look forward to reading the next volume.
I recommend this manga to anyone who likes sharp, flowing comic art and 16th century Europe.

Customer Reviews:
Very Entertaining and Informative.......2006-01-26
I've read a lot of these SF books (see my other reviews), and this one is one of the better ones to come around in a long time. He writes about himself, the SBS, and the SAS in a most sincere and humble manner. I will be buying more of Falconer's novels/books. Great book.
Suicidal Boat Service?.......2005-09-12
The SBS (Special Boat Service) is Britain's Special Forces unit that corresponds to the U.S. Navy SEALs. It is not as well known as Britain's SAS (Special Air Service), and I must admit that I had never heard of it until I ran across one of Duncan Falconer's novels half a year ago.
Duncan Falconer was a member of the SBS for a dozen years from around 1975, getting in at age 19, the youngest ever for a new member. "First Into Action" is his personal account of his life in the SBS plus a bit about his childhood and his entering the British Royal Marines.
If you're really keen on books about Special Forces units and the men who serve in them then I can recommend "First Into Action". Duncan Falconer does tell it like it is, and the story is very interesting.
Readers who are not so fascinated with the reality of Special Forces will find this book less appealing.
The most powerful impression I got from reading this book is that the men of the SBS are a bunch of suicidal maniacs! (I exaggerate - please bear with me.)
Duncan Falconer spends most of this book describing three aspects of the SBS: how dangerous it is, how self-motivated and intrepid the members are, and how often things go totally wrong.
The selection procedure is described, and it becomes obvious that in order to become a member of the SBS you have to be willing to push yourself to the point of physical injury. And the instructors come across as sadists.
After you become a member of the SBS you spend a lot of time doing exercises (or "rehearsals", as they call them) to keep your skills up to snuff. High-altitude parachuting, submarine exits, climbing oil rigs during a violent storm, testing new weapons and explosives, diving in freezing water, descending from a helicopter onto a bucking ship, etc., etc. You name it, the SBS can do it, or die trying. And a lot of them do die trying.
In addition to the many deaths there are a large number of injuries, some that heal and some that result in being incapacitated, perhaps even ending up in a wheelchair for the rest of your life.
There are also an incredible number of screw-ups in the missions that the SBS is involved in that can be considered humorous. In fact, large portions of the book are written in a tongue-in-cheek tone that is intended to be a contrast to the serious and heroic books by former members of the SAS and other Special Forces units.
Speaking of the SAS, another theme of "First Into Action" is the rivalry between the SBS and the SAS. The title of the book refers to the claim that the SBS is always (or almost always) the first British military unit sent into any conflict, before the SAS or anyone else.
Duncan Falconer writes with scorn about several SAS missions that went awry, including the famous Bravo Two Zero during the first Iraq war, and the accidental killing of an SBS operative during the Falklands War.
On the back cover of the paperback edition I read it said that Mr. Falconer had a "leading role" in SBS operations in the Falklands. This isn't true. In the text of the book Duncan Falconer writes that he was not involved in the Falklands at all, although he recounts several stories about the SBS teams that were there.
Much of the book describes Mr. Falconer's personal experiences during his time in Northern Ireland combating the IRA. This is fairly interesting, but not the kind of work that most Special Forces fans prefer to read about.
A few final points: The book is too long in my opinion, and it suffers from there being no dates whatsoever for the various events that take place. It's nice that there is a glossary of the military terms and acronyms used - I referred to it fairly often.
In conclusion, this book will appeal to Special Forces fans because it's a very honest look at the SBS, one of the world's best Special Forces units. My three-star rating of "First Into Action" is largely due to it being outside my normal reading preferences. For me it was an OK read, but Mr. Falconer's novels ("The Hostage" and "The Hijack") are more to my taste - I give them both four stars.
Rennie Petersen
Top Special Forces Book.......2004-05-18
Great book, much better than I expected. Some reviewers say they are annoyed with the author's coldness, brevity and lack of detail of certain events but I think that's due in part to the need for confidentiality of those events. I was not bothered by it and did not feel like it detracted from the book. I thought it had a plethora of information and events were explained very thoroughly. If it was too DETAILED or too GENERAL then I would question it's authenticity. I like the anonymity of the SBS, as the author says, it makes their job easier. This is the book to read if you want to read about the SBS or even the SAS. I'm burned-out on all the SAS/SEAL hoopla and wanted something a little different. The SBS are not as well known as the SAS in Britain and even less so here in the US, I only found this book when I was unknowingly transferred to Amazon.uk. Great book.

Little Witch wants to go to school just like her friends, but her mother thinks she should stay home and learn from her witchy aunts. Mother Witch finally agrees to let Little Witch go, but only if she promises to be very, very bad. It's a wild ride on a broomstick that kids won't soon forget! The third book in the popular Little Witch series, Little Witch Goes to School has all the mixed-up magic and quirky humor kids have come to love in the first two books.
Customer Reviews:
Fun book.......2006-06-30
I bought this book and two other Little Witch books to read to my daughter when she was only around the age of four. The story held her attention from front to back. Once she started to read on her own around the age of five she would ask to read the book with me. At the age of seven she still likes to read this book. Little Witch books make a nice gift also. If parents want to read books to their kids then I would have no problem giving this book to a four or five year old up to an eight year old.
I remember loving this book as a child, thx for the memories.......1999-05-16
All the little witch stories are cute and funny and much fun for children. I found this book on Barnes & Noble and experienced many fond memories of past readings in my childhood! Thank you!

Opposites attract in this story of young lovers who find that they aren't so opposite at all. A religious youth retreat serves as the meeting place for 17-year-olds Kenny Kolodny and Junie Williamson. Kenny's mother is a mental patient and his father is a raging alcoholic. Junie's are successful professionals. While Kenny is a pot smoker who lives in a filthy apartment and drives a beat-up station wagon, Junie lives in a Frank Lloyd Wright house in the suburbs and drives a bright red Honda Accord. But Junie has seen her own hard times and has just returned from a stay in a psychiatric hospital. The two find they share many of the same insecurities, doubts, and troubles, and as they struggle with feelings of detachment from the world, they create a safe place in which to cross into adulthood together.
Book Description
Building on the success of A Stranger in This World, the widely praised collection of stories that was one of the most exciting literary debuts of recent years, Kevin Canty has written a blistering, unforgettable first novel. Set in the sprawl of suburbia, with its shattered families and hollow lives, Into the Great Wide Open is the story of two young people fleeing their families' emotional abandonment to find refuge in each other.
Smart but scarred, Kenny Kolodny yearns to awake from the nightmare of his smashed-up family: his mother is in an institution and forever away; his father is an abusive alcoholic; his brother lives abroad. Seventeen and alone, he hangs on the periphery of his world, until he makes a passionate connection with the troubled, beautiful, fiercely independent Junie Williamson. Kenny discovers in their highly charged, intensely erotic relationship a reality--and a capacity for caring--he has not known before.
In prose startling for its diamond-hard edges and bravura lyricism, Kevin Canty revives the heady carnival of adolescence, evoking its confusing emotional landscape and its heightened sensuality, too soon lost. Into the Great Wide Open is a haunting, mesmerizing novel by a writer of deep sensitivity and undeniable talent.

Mundane but has some merit.......2005-05-18
Maybe I'm too old and can't relate to teenagers anymore...but I'm only 31 so I don't think that's it. I do remember what it was like to be a teenager, and even with the many issues I went through, I still can't completely relate to the two main characters (Kenny, Junie) in this book. If anything, it gave me a new perspective.
The one thing that I thought was the weirdest was that a man wrote this book. This book reads female all over it. I have a really hard time thinking a 17 or 18-year old male would have the thoughts and feelings that Kenny had. It just doesn't read correctly to me.
I did think the book had merit. Not quite sure what merit, but it was well-written, entertaining, funny at times and bittersweet. More bittersweet than anything else. First loves are like that.
Yay! for Kevin Canty.......2002-12-29
I read this book... it seems like a while ago... i was in high school. I feel like it was maybe 8 years ago or so... i was 17 (i think, by looking at the publication date). I don't even remember where i got it. Did i buy it? A gift?
I just remember loving this book. It's the story of 2 unlikely people to date... by unlikely, i mean people from different "sides of the tracks." I remember being enthralled by their romance (and by some sexy scenes in which they do some things in a car).
Kevin Canty's new book "Honeymoon and Other Stories" came out not too long ago. I manage in a book store and didn't even realize that it was the same author, and picked it up when i noticed how many copies i was selling and after selling one to a musician i like.
Then when i went to my mother's house for X-mas, i rediscovered "Into the Great Wide Open" on my childhood bookshelf and remember loving it. So not i'm really excited to read "Honeymoon" and to re-read "Into..."
This is a book you can read and re-read. I think Kevin Canty definately knows how to tell a story!
Can't wait for his next novel!.......2001-08-16
Canty's lyrical style and raw emotional text made me yearn for more of this book. I was completely absorbed and in awe of the authentic characters, Kenny and Junie. This is a must read - anyone who had a first young love will be compelled by the reality of Canty's emotional language. He beautifully puts into words the thoughts and feelings one had at that tender age. I liked the way that the book didn't neatly tie up all the loose ends or answer all the questions about the characters. It leads one to form one's own judgement. I have recommended this book to all my friends.
A beautiful and compelling sleeping pill.......2000-11-13
I absolutely loved this book. I got the book from a cousin, and I began to read it to my girlfriend every night over the phone. It was one of the most beautiful works that I've ever read. The funny thing was, the calmness of the book, combined with my voice, plus the time of night I usually read to her, and I ended up with her falling asleep alot. Wonderful book.
This book is superb!.......1999-11-21
I read this book when I was twelve. Only because I thought I was the most mature girl in the world. That was a laugh, but this book changed my view of love forever. I learned to appreciate love and to hold on to it more tightly. This book is absolutely amazing. Canty wrote a piece of pure genious. This book is definitely NOT for a twelve year old, but from anyone 14 and older. Its... there are no words to describe it. Its that good.

Book Description
As few people welcome the disturbance that change brings, turning strategy into action is always going to be a difficult task. This book consists of 15 articles which have appeared in
Long Range Planning. They provide a comprehensive insight into the difficulties of turning strategy into action, and some valuable thoughts on how to avoid them, or at least on how difficulties can be reduced to manageable proportions. The number of papers published on implementation of strategy tends to be low. The editors, however, found this an exciting challenge and the result is a tour-de-force of the thinking on issues affecting implementation and change. The aim of the
Best of Long Range Planning series is to bring together the best articles on a particular topic published in the journal, so that readers wishing to study a specific aspect of planning can find an authoritative and comprehensive view of the subject, conveniently published in one volume.

Book Description
Revolutions upset the existing international order. But not all revolutions upset it equally. In Revolutions and Revolutionary Waves, Mark N. Katz focuses on what is arguably the most disruptive kind of revolutionary wave: the kind that spreads by sparking "affiliate revolutions" in other countries. Katz compares three revolutionary waves--Marxist-Leninist, Arab nationalist, and Islamic fundamentalist--to unearth the complex relationships of revolutionary actors within them. He also makes predictions on the fate of the Islamic fundamentalist wave, arguing that it suffers from the same internal problems and contradictions that led to the collapse of the Marxist-Leninist and Arab nationalist revolutions. Revolutions and Revolutionary Waves is an outstanding contribution to the study of revolution, Middle East politics, and international relations.

Book Description
i Lakatos: An Introduction /i is the first comprehensive analysis on the intellectual life and theories of the distinguished thinker Imre Lakatos. This book clearly presents Lakatos's development of a philosophy of mathematics and empirical science, Lakatos's thought as an important hybrid of Popperian philosophy and Hegelian-Marxist thought, the relationship between Lakatos's views on science and mathematics and his more general philosophical beliefs. Brendan Larvor clearly locates Lakatos in the liberal-rationalist tradition and explains connections between the philosopher's life, philosophy, politics, and technical work in science and mathematics.
Customer Reviews:
Lucid and Accessible.......2001-12-11
I am a layman with interest in philosophical concepts and how they can be applied to my own field of study. I am presenting this review as of interest to other layman and not of direct interest to professions in this field.
The above being said, I found this book to be a lucid and accessible introduction to the ideas of Lakatos. I would recommend it to anyone else who is in my position of trying to understand the philosophical space without an exhaustive philosophical background..
Larvor presents Lakatos ideas in an historical manner. He relates them to the ideas of Kuhn and Popper that they advanced. He shows their origin in Lakatos' personal background in Hegel and Marx. The connections to these other thinkers is made clear with their ideas as they relate to Lakatos work thoroughly explained. This connection provides and understanding of not only Lakatos' work in their context but of the broader scope of their ideas in philosophy.
I would recommend this book to anyone who like me would like to understand the ides brought forth in philosophical investigations but lacks a formal background. It is an excellent book for self-instruction. It provides a clear grounding that makes the reading of the books by these major thinkers much more worthwhile. I had read Lakatos, Kuhn and Popper before I read this book. This book greatly helped me by giving greater clarity to the ideas that I had found there and by making subtle but important issues that I had not understood sufficiently much clearer.
