Customer Reviews:
One of the good ones that is worth buying........2006-06-23
A winner in all ways. This book is for the people who have done the little crafty bits and have not lost interest in favor of a new hobby of the month. It is for those who love the texture and reflectivity of this artform's materials and want to find out more.
The introduction and history section compares well to some of the better books. There is not that much but it is a respectable amount for a book that deals with technique and design.
Every book also has a tools and materials section and this one provides sufficient information for you to proceed without worrying if you are using the right adhesives or the right backing for your work. There is not much that one needs to add. This knowledge will provide a good foundation to build on. Explanations are clear and items pictured clearly.
The more common techniques are covered from beginning to end with, in one case, 17 small pointed images showing you exactly how. There is also a section on sculptural forms which shows you how to mosaic onto things that are not flat. Many other artists' work is also beautifuly presented in this book showing the different applications for the techniques that are covered in that section of the book. Very inspiring! It makes you want to get up and get going!
And when you do get going, there are 12 projects complete with templates and very concise intructions. They are all unique and there is something for everyone.
The contributing artists section would be more useful if there email addresses or web sites. The glossery also contains all of 7 items and the index is only 2 columns on a half a page. This could have been more complete.
This is a very good book for instruction, inspiration and beautiful pictures. An artist of any level would be happy with this purchase. 10 out of 10.
Excellent overall source.......2002-07-07
I bought 5 mosaic books while learning the technique and this is my favorite. Of the books I have read, this has the most comprehensive guide to the actual process of making a mosaic. There is an extensive section of tools, as well as the best explanation of the direct and especially indirect method that I have seen. Pictures are plentiful too for every step and offer some fabulous examples of what is possible with the art.
Very well done!
Unique projects.......2002-04-05
So far, every mosaic book I have collected has something to offer. This one has a few notable characteristics. The section on tools and equipment is more complete and detailed than other mosaic books I have seen. Beginning mosaic books usually suggest some kind of spatula, a tile nipper, and glass cutter. Quite a few other tools are suggested and described here, as well as what they are for. Although I feel daunted about buying and using so many different tools, it is helpful to know what I can look for if a particular project requires something different.
The projects are fairly simple, but unique. For example, there is a lamp base covered with broken plates and cups, including the cup handles which protrude from the lamp! There is an irregular-shaped plaque, formed by pouring concrete into a polystyrene foam that you design, and then covered with an ancient Roman-simulated design. There is a mirror frame which is jig-sawed into an interesting shape, and this project alone is for me worth the price of the book.
There are projects with very clear instructions for using both the direct and indirect method of applying tesserae.
What I particularly like is that the instructions include how to finish the projects, such as how to put the back on the mirror, what hardware to use, and how to apply it. The other mosaic books I have seen so far only tell how to make the mosaic part, and leave the finishing steps up to you.
Finally, there are many photos of incredible projects (such as an entire facade of a house) made by professional mosaicists, which the beginner would not attempt, but from which beginners and experienced alike can find inspiration.
Inspiring and easy to understand with delightful photos.......2000-12-28
This has been the single most inspiring book I've read on mosaic. The instructions are not only clear in their description, but there are photos in the different stages of progress for those of us who are "show me" people. The many photos throughout the book are fabulous and offer a wide variety of ideas and techniques for creating. There are helpful artist's tips included throughout the book too, as well as tools and materials listed for each project.
A great resource for the mosaic artist........1998-07-12
Has all the basics, plus more. Great photos.

Book Description
Ansel Adams is best known for a series of photographs he produced of America's natural heritage known collectively as the National Park Service Photographs, representative examples of which are reproduced here. This assignment was especially commissioned in 1941 by Harold Ickes of the United States Department of the Interior and the aim was to record for posterity areas that had been designated national parks, as well as portraying the Native American homelands and other monuments and areas of reclamation of the great American wilderness. These would also be used as photo-murals to decorate the walls of the Department of the Interior. Ickes was already familiar with Ansel's work having seen detailed studies of leaves and ferns which featured in an exhibition of 1936. Indeed, he liked them so much that he hung one in his own office. He eventually made Ansel's acquaintance when the photographer came to lobby Congress, seeking to have Kings River Canyon, California designated a national park.
Originally, only painted murals by established artists were thought suitable for inclusion in the Mural Project, as it came to be known, as photography had yet to be considered worthy of being regarded as an art form, rather than a way of recording or documenting reality; but Ickes was convinced that Ansel's work was artistically valid and would make its own inimitable contribution to the scheme.
The collection of works commissioned in 1941 was intermixed with earlier studies of the Kings Canyon area dating back to 1936, and these and the new prints were offered as part of the commission. The photographs are a pictorial testament to the majesty of the American West, captured with technical accuracy and imbued with sheer inventiveness and a deep empathy for the regions which Ansel sought to protect and maintain intact. They range from rivers and canyons, close-ups of plant life, Native American villages and their inhabitants, the mysterious and enigmatic underworld of the Carlsbad Caverns and the geysers and twisted forms of Yellowstone National Park. Together, they offer a visual feast and a source of delight and nourishment for the spirit.

Journalistic claptrap!.......2002-08-24
In a way, I shouldn't be surprised, as this is a well-written and very readable account of a journalist's time behind rebel lines in the way, but I'm amazed by the level of the positive response. It's 2-dimensional, not very perceptive and treads ground too often trodden rather more effectively by others.
Excellent.......2001-09-22
I just kept reading...right until the end. Mr. Gall made something so complex...sound so interesting. I couldn't have found this book more enjoyable.
BRAVO!.......1999-07-11
A great book from the eyes of reporter....this is some of the best reading I have come across in a while.
Intriguing.......1998-03-19
I have to commend Mr. Gall for a fine, well written account of a reporter's travels throughout Afghanistan during the war. I enjoyed this book very much.
Behind Russian Lines.........A Dazzling Experience.......1996-06-10
Sandy Gall does it again. Not only a fine journalist, anchorman, and reporter, but a unbelievable nack for interpreting difficult and complex material and making it understandable!!! THANKS SANDY!!

Book Description
Birthmothers presents intimate and stirring accounts of more than seventy women who surrendered babies for adoption. It follows their lives long-term, from discovery of their pregnancies through the present, and identifies the Birthmother Syndrome —a pattern of behavior and emotions resulting from surrender. With heartwarming candor, it reveals the stories of the invisible side of the adoption triangle, and touches everyone involved in adoption, as well as anyone interested in motherhood, family and women in our society.
Customer Reviews:
From a birthmother's point of view.......2006-11-29
I really enjoyed this book. I've been in reunion with my son for 6 months now and I'd found him (no contact) 2 months prior to that. This is an extremely emotion time for all involved and it's good to hear other birthmothers' sides/stories, their actions and repercussions, and such. I found it very informative and eye opening. It's also nice to find out that other women feel the same way I do. I highly recommend this book.
From An Adoptee Who Has Found Her Family . . . .......2005-02-22
While this book can offer some insight into moms who lost children to adoption in the past, it is very sad that the title is so demeaning to moms. Even though my mom and I were separated for over 34 years, she is my one and only MOTHER; there is no need to attach the derogatory label "birth" to her. All TRUE and NATURAL MOMS give birth and pass along genes to their children. One reviewer here talks about her adoptee's mother in terms of "our birthmother," a demaning title indeed that makes it seem as though the true mother is merely a breeder for the adopters. I know that the title isn't everything for a book, but in this case, it is most important and sets the tone. If more mothers who have lost their children would realize and identify themselves as MOTHERS instead of breeders, there would be far fewer adoptions. Let's hope that happens soon, but it won't be due to this book.
It also breaks my heart to hear that a mother who has abandoned her daughter through a legal adoption is so critical of this book because it sheds light on the harm that adoption does. My guess is that this reviewer, as the mothers in the book eventually did, will wake up to the reality of what she did to her child. It will, of course, be too late.
I do admire this book's willingness to try and show the harm that adoption does. Let's hope that the author's future versions are more respectful of natural families.
Informative- Yes; Encouraging- No.......2004-05-22
As a young woman (Birthmother)who has selected adoption as the best choice for an unplanned pregnancy, I would say that I found this book disturbing at times, downright upsetting at others. I would argue that while there are some common themes that could be drawn upon in writing this acccount; there were too many "scary stories" included in this book to make it credible as any worthwhile reccomendation for the average birthmother, adoptee, or adoptive parent. The author documented incidences of incestuous relationships between birthparents and their relinquished children in a way that made them sound somewhat typical; this was unsupported, and in my opinion a disservice to the entire piece's integrity. She also coined a phrase, "The Birthmother Syndrome" wherein attempts were made at classifying, categorizing, and diagnosing women who have been through a similar experience, but cannot possibly be so easily analyzed as she has done here. Ultimately this book (from my perspective) propagated stereotypes and was a discouraging piece to read
A painful and compassionate eye-opener.......2003-09-06
This is a beautifully written and valuable book for our understanding of birthmothers who describe experiences in both closed and open adoptions. Many have grieved; others have felt relief; a number have entirely repressed their emotions. Regardless of what they think about relinquishment, many continue to struggle with the emotional effects of suppressing their maternal drive in the form of rage, frustration, sorrow, guilt, and self-doubt. Many birthmothers emphasized that reunion was not a cure for the regrets, angers, or grief they faced after relinquishing. The author writes that 'even in mutually rewarding reunions, most birthmothers experienced profound sensations of loss.' Yes, I understand this feeling because I have personal experience with the birthmother of our daughter. Relinquishment occurred in 1969, when the baby was 4 days old and 28 years later our birthmother found us. Today, we love one another and our daughter has a cordial relationship with her birthmother, but our birthmother is facing the terrible reality that her grown daughter, now a mother herself, is not the needy little baby she had relinquished and a late mother-child relationship is impossible. 'Even reunions can't make it right.'
I recommend this book to everyone, not just to members of the adoption triad. It is a book about humanity.
Gisela Gasper Fitzgerald, author of ADOPTION: An Open, Semi-Open or Closed Practice?
Birthmothers: Women Who Have Relinquished Babies.......2002-12-17
An important work! I recommend that all triad members and adoption social workers read it. Jones is not a member of the adoption triad (i.e., she's not a birthmother, an adoptee, or an adoptive parent). The author interviewed birthmothers and put important nuggets of their experiences into this book. Though we don't get to know any of the birthmothers in depth, we do learn how they felt about relinquishment long-term, feelings ignored by our entire society for much too long.

The big picture.......2006-12-27
"No nation has ever set side the principles that triumphed in its civil war," writes historian Bruce Lincoln, in words that perhaps were being outpaced by events when this book was published in 1990. On the other hand, the revolution of the Soviet empire may require a civil war as much as the revolution of the tsarist empire did. (2006 update: jury still out on that one)
Civil war was a surprise to the idealists who turned their backs on the stupid carnage of the war with Germany and the stupid tsar. They recalled 1917 as a year of soaring hope.
At least in Moscow and Petrograd; life was grim enough in the countryside, as always.
The civil war did not have to be fought as a class war, perhaps. That was a conscious decision of the Bolsheviks. For the common people, that decision was disastrous. "As the Reds and Whites fought their first battles in the spring of 1918, neither thought simply of victory or defeat. Each planned the other's annihilation," writes Lincoln, who has written seven other books about Russia.
Annihilation was the fate of ordinary Russians and the subject peoples of the empire. "The tsar had been overthrown and the Civil War won," Lincoln writes, "but the Bolsheviks' domestic security forces continued to be larger than any their imperial predecessors had ever possessed. So did their bureaucracy. In town and country, the living standard of Russia's masses remained far below what it had been in 1917. The general death rate had doubled, and that grim statistic did not take into account some seven million men, women and children who had died from malnutrition and epidemics since the Bolsheviks had taken power."
The nearly incredible scope of the Revolution and the Civil War has seldom been presented to Americans in a solid, popular history, so "Red Victory" was timely as the Second Revolution was under way in 1990. Lincoln's style has much in common with that of Page Smith in his "People's History of the United States."
Excellent book about a difficult topic .......2005-08-31
This is an immensely informative and enjoyable book. Lincoln is among the better narrative historians although he does interject some analyses as well. The book Red Victory is not only about the Russian Civil War but about the almost insurmountable obstacles...political, economic, and military...faced by Lenin and the Bolsheviks after their seizure of power. The Russian Civil War was a confusing chaotic affair with numerous factions and personalities but Lincoln does a commendable job sorting out the details in a comprehensible manner. As he implies in his text, there are few geunuine heroes in this conflict as each side practiced attrocities as brutal as any in modern day civil wars. The one weakness is more detail should have been provided concerning the military aspects of the actual battles. Otherwise highly recommended.
Very engaging history on a very complex subject.......2003-04-06
Lincoln very engagingly takes the reader into the private memoirs of hundreds of principal characters, into the thinking of Lenin and Trotsky and Stalin, and into the changing and complex fabric of Russian life during its Civil War. Every page breathes the idea "revolution" as the cure-all in the Reds' minds for every ill in Russian society, while the Whites seem more bent on democracy or a dictatorship (like the tsarist days), so long as there was some kind of order, during a period when "corruption" was their own festering and ultimately destructive cancer. Politics, the maker of strange bedfellows, and a background as broad and as varied as Russia itself, make for key components in this fascinating examination of political theory and efforts at self-government on the heels of the First World War.
would give it two and a half but..........2002-11-19
this book just doesnt cut it as professional history. It is aimed too much toward general laymen interest of the public. A topic as horrific as the Russian Civil War cannot be dealt with in such a conventional manner. Lincoln tells us what happened as opposed to why. The Whites get almost no attention and most of the work focuses on the Reds. This book is divided into sections 1918, 1919, 1920 ect... but there is almost no chronological order to the work and Lincoln jumps from the October Revolution to Cheka atrocities with no sense of transition. The White administration of territories and the White military unitis along with their regimental level commanders receive not attention at all. This book gives the impression that all Whites were nothing but a motley collection of disgrunteled front commanders from the German war, muderous rascists, and drug addicted psychotics. They were no saints but Trotsky and Lenin were just as bad...if not worse. The book is over long and actually gives more importance Stalin's terror in the late 30s then it does on the apocolyptic war at the front in 1919. The section on the Kronstad uprising should have been cut out altogeather and more focus should have been given to the Tambov peasant rising. Stick with Mawdsley's more academic and convincing work on this terrible tragedy.
Good History.......2000-03-30
This is a great look at a bloody moment in Russian history. Fascinating, exciting, and well written, this is how hisotry should be written.
Product Description
The Russian Civil War was one of the most momentous conflicts of our century. It shattered the nation, yet insured its survival as a muscle-bound empire. In three nearly forgotten years, 1918-1921, seven million died.
Near the end of WW I, German armies devoured Russia, public confidence evaporated and Czar Nicholas II abdicated, leaving power to a provisional government that fell six months later. The Bolsheviks emerged as winner.
Then came peace with Germany, freeing a million men to fight France, Britain and America in the West with Lenin talking of worldwide revolution. In response, 14 nations sent support to the Whites--including 20,000 American soldiers. But it was all in vain.

Book Description
For any of us, problem solving is a daily event. For some, it is a major task. This historical book puts to use neuropsychological methods to analyze the process of problem solving. Experience shows that the process is psychologically so complicated that standard methods established in pedagogy and psychology are insufficient to precisely determine individual factors hindering effective problem solving. The authors present techniques for rehabilitation training which could compensate for the impairments observed in individual cases. Luria's work has transformed rehabilitation training, enabling the evaluation of rehabilitation principles and methods. Luria's thinking and conceptual style reflect his genius and rich understanding of brain-behavior relationships. As those who have read it agree, Luria demonstrates remarkable insight with his complex analysis and his qualitative analysis is "breathtaking."
Customer Reviews:
Nearly 20 years old, it still has a lot to teach........1999-07-23
As an "old time" neuropsychologist, I first read this book in graduate school shortly after publication. At that point it was an epiphany for me, despite the ponderous language. On recent re-reading, I was struck by the amount of still relevant material. For instance, Luria described work with physostigmine in memory enhancement. The soon to be approved Alzheimer's drug, Exelon, is a derivative of physostigmine. The language is somewhat tedious, but this book still qualifies as a "bible" that should be required reading for everyone in neurology, psychiatry and neuropsychology.
