Book Description
Beginning with studio practices and safety rules, this information-packed handbook is appropriate for both newcomers and experienced dyers but assumes that readers have a serious interest in textile design. An overview of dyeing starts with fibers and fabrics and discusses all aspects of the dyes favored by textile studios—fiber reactive, acid, vat, and disperse—before explaining discharging, screen printing, monoprinting, stamping, stenciling, resist dyeing, dévoré, and painting. Would-be fabric artists are advised along the way to identify a personal approach to dyeing—free spirit? rule-follower?—and color photographs of work by today's top fiber artists elucidate prevailing styles. Recipes and techniques are accompanied by step-by-step instructions with photographs, and a concealed spiral binding allows the book to lie flat. Ten appendices include a worksheet for recording chemicals, procedures, and costs for all projects; a guide to washing fabric; descriptions of stock solutions, thickeners, and steaming; a metric conversion table; and a guide to water temperatures.
Customer Reviews:
So much, much more than I expected!!!.......2007-09-25
Others have already related the key points about this book. I just want to further confirm for everyone looking to buy it that this author really did an EXCELLENT job. She obviously is a art and TECHNICAL expert in this field. She could've taken less time and put out a book that would've gotten her a solid 4.5-star rating. Instead she obviously put in twice the time and ended up with a 10-star book. She gives you all the details that people serious about trying complicated crafts look for but rarely find without studying in the studio of a professional. I just picked this up from the NEW BOOKS rack at the library because I am generally interested in the subjected. Like the one person so far who has given her a lower rating, it did make me think that this is probably too difficult for me. But on the other hand, she has many photos showing the possibilities of what I might be able to accomplish if I did try and it's very seductive. Nothing very special worth accomplishing comes easily and that seems to also apply to fabric art. I also appreciate the thoughtfulness of her making the binding a spiral so the pages lay perfectly flat for easy reference while you follow the directions. If I decide to seriously try this craft, it will be this book that I buy and I doubt I'd even need to buy another one ever.
Throw away your notes - this is all you need!.......2007-09-04
This book has enabled me to recycle ALL of my class and workshop notes and just use this book - it's all there and in great detail. (now I have space for MORE books)
Wonderful book!.......2007-07-18
Holly Brackmann's new book The Surface Designer's Handbook is long over-due and I have ordered it as the textbook for all my fibers classes. As soon as it arrived my students all wanted their own personal copy so several of them purchased it outright just on sight alone. The spiral binding is excellent and the extent of the techniques covered is wonderful. I teach both beginners and advanced fibers students and this book has everything we need as a textbook.
I use it myself for my own work and find it very helpful, well organized and thorough. The information about making color cards with diluted MX dye on watercolor paper is worth the selling price all by itself. It is a technique I knew nothing about and I am thrilled to learn about it. It has saved hours and hours of dye testing time.
In my classes we had been using Kate Wells' book Fabric Dyeing and Printing and prior to that, Proctor and Lew's Surface Design for Fabric. Now, 16 years later, Holly's excellent book has arrived and is the handbook of the hour. It is up to date, comprehensive and thorough, and should be in everyone's library that works with dyes, textile paints and cloth. It improves on and surpasses every handbook published to date and encompasses a massive amount of information.
I look forward to using it in my classes for many years to come and I salute Holly for the enormous amount of work that went into creating this book. She has provided a gift for the entire surface design community both here and abroad.

Master Craftman Level Surface Design.......2007-07-14
This book is so complete that you nearly do not need any other books for working with surface design, dyeing and all processes related to fibre arts.
Congratualtions to the author, Holly Brackman for putting together the most comprehensive manual ever.
too much to digest.......2007-06-30
I had hoped for a book that had practical suggestions for using surface design in mixed media and art quilt work. So much of this book is devoted to very technical dye processes that I find only a small portion of it is actually of help to me. If I wasn't already a bit afraid of dying my own fabric, I certainly am now!

Textiles-Marypaul Yates.......2007-07-05
I am a College instructor of Interior Design. I have used this text for years in my Textiles course. It is beautifully illustrated (a plus for visually-orientated Design students!). It also deals with the tactile, practical and asthetic applications of textiles. Other texts emphasize the carbon content and chemical composition of textiles and are dry both verbally and visually. This text is not; yet it clearly defines natural vs. man-made fibers and their individual and compound functions. Textiles by Marypaul Yastes is the best!
A Textile Designer Student's Bible.......2002-11-09
If any of you happen to be (or are planning on being) a Textile/Surface Design student at F.I.T., you NEED to own this book. It gives nearly an exact rundown of the curriculum taught at the school...
The best thing about it for me, though, is that I have the book to fall back on when I don't understand an assignment. Priceless! I do wish she'd revise the book again to include more about Computer Aided Design, however!
Great hands on information for working textile designers.......1999-02-05
You learn so much dense information in textile design school, that you can never retain in your head. Finding this book has brought back all of the rules, repeat sizes, guidance and practical/specific information that is so usefull and needed in the professional environment - especially as a freelance designer when your fending for yourself. Great book - highly reccommended!
Excellent Book.......1999-02-01
This is an excellent resource for anyone interested in textiles or design. After reading several books on the subject this one still offered fresh information, and in a style easier to understand, especially when describing techniques. One other thing that endeared it to me was that it is truly a handbook, by which I mean you can carry it around. All the other books on this subject were really coffee table size.
Book Description
The second edition of this comprehensive handbook emphasizes the relationship between the assembly methods, the materials, and the plastics manufacturing processes, thus enabling the reader to identify the best design/assembly method for a given application. The book has been completely updated and a new chapter on laser welding of plastics was added. The book describes all principal fastening and joining methods used to assemble plastic parts today - with their particular advantages and disadvantages. Assembly method limitations for a given material and/or a given molding process are discussed in great detail.
This is very much a "how-to" book, offering a wealth of hard-to-find detailed information.
Customer Reviews:
Reference guide for joining of plastics.......2000-12-28
Joining of Plastics authored by Jordan Rotheiser and published by Hanser Gardner Publications, is an outstanding handbook covering everything from Adhesive joining to Welding of plastic components. (Note that there are no joining techniques starting with letter Z!) The author draws upon more than thirty-five years of plastics product design experience to present this encyclopedic coverage of joining techniques most commonly used in the plastics industry. This book not only offers a detailed guide to a novice reader in easy-to-read format, but also a complete reference manual for the experienced designer who occasionally encounters a new or unusual problem.
The author's unique approach to presenting the information is very refreshing and it fulfills its stated purpose of providing a handy desk reference and a design guide. Case in point, chapter one covers rapid guidelines for joining of plastic and efficient use of the handbook. This gives reader a quick overview of all available assembly methods in terms of description of the method, advantages, limitations, applications, and processing considerations. The general guidelines provide the direction for further reference and in-depth exploration of the particular subject. The importance of properly designing the parts to avoid assembly problems, improve efficiency, and reduce assembly time cannot be over emphasized. The chapter on designing for efficient assembly deals with this subject and provides the guidelines for the proper design along with an invaluable product design for assembly check list. A separate chapter for designing parts for disassembly and recycling covers increasing problem of solid waste management and makes important recommendations.
The relationship between the assembly methods, the Materials, and the plastics manufacturing processes is generally neglected in the available references. This book, in two separate chapters Assembly method selection by material and Assembly method selection by process, addresses this important but often overlooked relationship. Some of the individual topics discussed in detail are, adhesive and solvent joining, fasteners and inserts, hinges, variety of welding techniques including hot plate welding, gas welding, and induction/electromagnetic welding. Also, there are separate chapters on press fit, snap fits, spin welding, stacking, and cold forming. One of the most useful features of this book is the discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of each assembly method, making the selection process fast and easy. For example, the author succinctly points out that if high levels of molded-in stresses are a huge concern, one may want to avoid insert molding altogether. Chapter 13 on Insert and multi part molding discusses one of the fastest growing injection molding techniques to reduce assembly cost and components, often referred to as multi-component molding. Over forty pages have been devoted to the detailed discussion of Ultrasonic welding, a very popular and widely accepted joining methods.
In order to increase the versatility of the book and meet the goal of providing a ready reference and "how to" on the subject, numerous illustrations, charts, and tables have been depicted through out the book, names, addresses, and phone numbers of suppliers and equipment manufacturers are given along with adequate reference section. In the humble opinion of the reviewer, the readers would benefit even more, if additional actual photographs showing applications, equipment, and case studies were included. Whenever possible, inclusion of the supplier's website and e-mail address, should prove very valuable. Perhaps, the author would accept the suggestions for the future revision.
In the end, this handbook is the original work and no tired revision of an old text. The author has worked very hard to put into one volume much data that some of us have collected from various sources over a period of years and so often is buried in the files. Joining of Plastics is a very useful addition to any plastics engineer's library; however, it is a must for all plastic part designers.

Book Description
As Tom Wolfe explains in his foreword: "Douglas Curran is not only a photographer but also a reporter, and an extremely gifted one. I am tempted to suggest that he also qualifies as an anthropologist, but I think I will leave it at 'reporter.' To be a reporter of Douglas Curran's caliber is a lofty enough achievement. He has discovered an exotic world, and for eight years he has traveled remote terrains throughout the United States and Canada exploring it. This book is the culmination of a quest that, by terrestrial standards, is as extraordinary as that of the people he brings to life."
In the course of that long quest, Curran recorded--in sympathetic words and perceptive photographs--the ideas and experiences of individuals whose obsession with outer space inspired them to create elaborate homemade spaceships and even more elaborate belief systems. Now updated with several new photographs and an expanded text--and more relevant than ever, given the popularity of The X-Files and other investigations of alien life--In Advance of the Landing remains the definitive probe of a singularly fascinating subculture.
Customer Reviews:
A Singular book.......2002-01-28
Curran's "In Advance of the Landing..." is a singular book that explores the mythological basis of the UFO phenomenon. Less concerned with the 'proof' of whether or not UFOs exist, Curran sets out to show that the impact of the belief in flying saucers and extraterrestrials (all of them much more clever and wise than mere earthlings) is pervasive and sits entirely within the continuum of Judea-Christianity beliefs.
A revised mythology for a new technological age is beautifully rendered through Curran's photographs and words.
One of my all-time favorites!.......2001-08-09
I've read virtually every UFO book that's come out over the past 40+ years, and this remains one of my all-time favorites. I have the original softbound edition, which has become a cult classic and now goes for something like $100. This is more of a sociological document than a UFO book. It perfectly captures the entire spectrum of quirky characters involved in the UFO field, and the photographs are an absolute hoot. I return to this book time and again just for a laugh and to remind myself that there are nuttier people in the UFO field than me. There's nothing condescending about the authors' treatment of their subjects, however. They obviously have a genuine fondness for them -- and you will, too. This is a "must have" for anyone with an interest in UFOs.
Classic of modern folk belief.......1999-10-16
IN ADVANCE OF THE LANDING is a sensitively written and photographed testimony of how far we will go to have something--anything--to hope for. I find myself looking again and again at the pictures and stories of people who labor in workshops or in empty fields building rockets and flying saucers, people who await the landing of extraterrestrials they KNOW are coming soon. This subject is as worthy of serious study as any religion, and you don't have to look hard to see how closely these people's expectations parallel second comings, raptures, and apocalyptic salvation scenarios of better-known religions. As ludicrous as some of the believers are (Ariel, the "queen" of the Unarian religon who dresses like a fairy godmother, a tiara atop her bubble hairdo) I came away with renewed fascination for and frustration at our capacity to believe. An excellent artifact of our times.
A truthful but sad commentary.......1998-05-21
This is an excellent book which combines good journalism with excellent photography. Once you pick it up its hard to put it down. The book is facinating but at the same time alarming because the people in it are real. Mr. Curran gives an excellent and frank portrayal of the people who hold to the reality of UFO's and their occupants. He presents them, without any judgement, in an accurate a manner as possible. You can clearly see the bankrupcy of their beliefs. It is a sad but truthful commentary of the manner in which a human being can choose to waste his life.

Book Description
Collecting the travels and travails of Hutch Owen since the year 2000, The Collected Hutch Owen: Unmarketable centers on "Public Relations" as Hutch is pitted against the Worner Company and a PR firm bent on redesigning the World Trade Center Site. This 92-page story - the longest Hutch story to date - was a one-page-per-week improvisational drama begun a personal response to September 11, 2001. Other stories include "Aristotle," in which Hutch winds up in Worner's employ as a slogan writer, as well as a surreal Hutch Owen "24-hour comic" in which Hutch battles the trends of the "far future" when everyone wants to be on TV and thinks they have something new to say. Hart's shorter Hutch Owen stories round out the collection with "Consumer Confidence Level," "In Hong Kong," "Attacking Attacked Attacking," and "The Executive Hour" (a solo Dennis Worner story).

Yes I am the author- here are some great reviews:
Reviewed by Publishers Weekly January 2005
HUTCH OWEN: Unmarketable
Tom Hart. Top Shelf
Hart?s angry nonconformist Hutch Owen is a modern comics icon?a pissed-off homeless man who stands up for idealism and represents the individual against looming corporate hegemony. But the tales in this collection are not angry diatribes. Instead, they mix slapstick and verbal humor to create high-level social satire. In the first story, "Aristotle," Hutch pays for a cup of coffee by parading as a mascot outside his favorite coffee shop. His free-form rants catch the eye of his continuing nemesis, corporate head Dennis Worner, whose goal is to market the entire world into bite-sized, profitable chunks. The denouement finds Worner and Hutch in a helicopter over a desert "creativity camp" where Worner has sent his other lackeys for some toughening up, with disastrous results. "Public Relations" is a darker, 93-page tale set in New York in the aftermath of 9/11. Again, Hutch?s outsider freedom makes him, ironically, a prime spokesman for the "rebellion" that marketers use to sell their products to anesthetized consumers. This story is somewhat more complicated, and it doesn?t unfold entirely clearly as it takes a sympathetic look at traumatized people who are trying to find a way to survive in a commercial society. The simple art isn?t quite up to capturing the apocalyptic finale, but it defines the humor and characters well. Hart?s greatest strength is seeing all sides of the stories he?s telling. Hutch Owen doesn?t have any answers, but he has to keep raising the questions. (Jan.)

The authors have had first hand contact with a multitude of patients with melanoma, and they understand exactly how to empower patients to gain control of their situations and obtain the best treatment.
Customer Reviews:
Clear and Concise - A Good Place To Start.......2007-06-21
A great source for the individual who has just been diagnosed with melanoma and wants to know where to begin for information on diagnosis, possible treatments, and questions to ask one's doctors. This is also a good resource for friends and loved ones of those who have been recently diagnosed with melanoma. The information is very elementary and somewhat basic, but everyone needs to start somewhere. This book is a better resource for those who have either stage I or II melanoma. Individuals with advanced stages of melanoma, or who have been battling this dread disease for some time, will probably not find this book as useful or informative.
EXCELLENT.......2005-12-06
Written in a laypersons terms it makes this book so much easier to understand and get a grasp of it all. EXCELLENT!!!!!!!!!
Melanoma, P:revention, Detection and Treatment.......2003-03-17
This books is the best out there on melanoma. It has great photos, and the explanations are so easy to understand. It also makes the diagnosis a lot less scary with factual answers that seem caring.
Very Useful Book.......2000-11-19
This book was very useful in understanding melanoma. My mother had the disease and I have many moles that on occasion worry me. THe photos and text dispelled many of the myths I had heard about getting melanoma and now I know what to look for when I worry about a mole changing. I don't panic about my moles as much and now I'm armed to discuss anything with my doctor in an intelligent manner.
Save Your Skin and Your Life!.......2000-09-07
As the managing editor of the popular online family health magazine Pinksunrise I had the opportunity to both read Ms. Poole's book and to interview her. Melanoma is not only a personal issue for Ms. Poole but also a national warning in the fight to prevent the deadly cancer melanoma. Ms. Poole spends a great deal of time talking about the prevention, early detection, and the latest treatments for melanoma. In addition, she has written a book that is comprehensive, yet written for everyone to understand. Early detection is the real key to warding off melanoma and escaping invasive and potentially dangerous cancer. She includes many excellent photos of what "normal" skin marks and moles look like and what "abnormal" or dangerous marks and moles look like. This is an invaluable resource for the whole family.
Customer Reviews:

Good, clear reference of types and treatments of melanoma........1998-02-06
When diagnosed with malignant melanoma last year, I needed information FAST. I found this book helpful, especially for understanding the terminology the doctors were using. It was clear and easy to understand, and thorough.
Book Description
Besides reexamining in fresh perspective such well-known figures as Paul Revere, Nathan Hale, Benedict Arnold, and John André, the author, a former general staff intelligence officer in World War II, reveals the exploits and tribulations of scores of other spies: Ann Bates, the Tory agent who spied at Washington's headquarters and who, when fleeing for her life, paused to count American artillery; the high-ranking traitor Dr. Benjamin Church, the Continental Army's Director General of Hospitals, caught as a result of a careless mistress; Sergeant Major John Champe, who posed as a deserter from the rebel army in order to capture Benedict Arnold; and many others. From the plot to kidnap George Washington to the fall of Yorktown, here are the clandestine activities of the spies, counterspies, and double agents who risked life and honor in a silent, anonymous shadow war.
Customer Reviews:
Very interesting book, but ..........2006-07-17
The book itself is quite good. It covers the issues of espionage in the American Revolution like I have never seen before in print. Sometimes the author will elude to a fact that a person did and describe it as "humorous" or "interesting." Yet the author won't actually tell you the event or exchange he is describing thus allowing the reader to decide if the event was humorous or interesting for themselves. So, in that way, the book is very edited in the bias of the author.
This being a reprinted book, it is most assuredly the worst reprint in history. Most every page of the book is offset into the fold so that it makes for the most uncomfortable reading. It appears as if both pages of text almost flow together. Moreover, page 323, and whatever was printed on it, is missing entirely.
Again, good book for the diehard fan of the subject, but be prepared to work if you want to read it.
Excellent review of Espionage during the Revolutionary War.......1998-09-11
Formerly out of print, this softbound book provides a comprehensive overview of intelligence operations during the Revolutionary War. Covering the more common stories about the attempted kidnapping of Washington and the Arnold/Andre affair, it also depicts intelligence conducted before various battles, intelligence failures & successes, and France's intelligence collection prior to their involvement in the War. Worth buying.

Book Description
This important new book, by one of the leading social historians in France today, analyses the changing meaning of rape through numerous case studies across the centuries. The book begins with a history of the relative tolerance of sexual violence in early modern France, and the tendency to condemn the victims by enveloping them in the shame of the act. It then traces the changing legal attitudes to sexual violence at the end of the eighteenth century, and the slow recognition of the role of moral violence in rape in the nineteenth century. Vigarello also stresses the importance of the new medical jurisprudence and the introduction of forensic psychiatry into the courtroom. But despite the increased number of convictions in the nineteenth century, it was only after the campaigns conducted by feminists in the twentieth century that the true gravity of rape as a crime against women's integrity was fully recognized. As a result, acts of sexual violence are no longer assessed in terms of the risk of debauchery, but in terms of the risk of 'psychic murder' and inner damage.A History of Rape is a valuable resource for students and scholars of social history, and anyone interested in changing attitudes to sexuality and sexual violence

Book Description
This CD-ROM, published by ETI and the Harrison Zoological Museum (UK), contains a treatise on all 119 species of bat known from the Indian subcontinent. With over 1000 illustrations, drawings and videos, this CD-ROM gives a detailed understanding of the morphology, variability, geographical distribution, biology, ecology and conservation status of each of the species. Three different illustrated computer-aided keys facilitate the identification of the species. All text is hyperlinked: an illustrated glossary defines specific scientific terms. The bibliography includes over 600 references from journals and books and a gazetteer is added (with illustrations) to specify the ca. 1400 localities mentioned in the text. This CD-ROM is an excellent introduction to the Indian bats and belongs in any modern scientific library.
