Book Description

The spectacularly successful transformation of Times Square has become a model for other cities. From its beginning as Longacre Square, Times Square’s commercialism, signage, cultural diversity, and social tolerance have been deeply embedded in New York City’s psyche. Its symbolic role guaranteed that any plan for its renewal would push the hot buttons of public controversy: free speech, property-taking through eminent domain, development density, tax subsidy, and historic preservation.

In Times Square Roulette, Lynne Sagalyn debunks the myth of an overnight urban miracle performed by Disney and Mayor Giuliani, to tell the far more complex and commanding tale of a twenty-year process of public controversy, nonstop litigation, and interminable delay. She tells how the troubled execution of the original redevelopment plan provided a rare opportunity to rescript it. And timing was all: the mid-1990s saw rising international corporate interest in the city as a mecca for mass-market entertainment and synergistic merchandising. Sagalyn details the complex relationship between planning and politics and the role of market forces in shaping Times Square’s redevelopment opportunities. She shows how policy was wedded to deal making and how persistent individuals and groups forged both.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Documenting a miracle of urban redevelopment.......2002-04-11

The transformation of Times Square from a den of porn, drugs, and prostitution into an urban Disneyland is the greatest success story of urban renewal. (I am astonished that anyone could be nostalgic about the old Times Square - I find it hard to be nostalgic about drug dealers loitering in front of porn shops and boarded-up theaters.)

Lynne Sagalyn devotes her 600-page tome to documenting the politics behind the redevelopment process. The end result is not exactly rivetting reading. Perhaps it's asking too much for any author to transform this epic of backroom politics, urban planners, and real estate developers into a "good read." In any event, the author has carefully documented the entire process, focussing on the backroom politics and urban planning strategies, rather than on the architecture of the buildings themselves. The book is profusely illustrated with well over a hundred b&w photos and detailed maps. In addition, a central color section of the book has about 35 photographs and drawings.

3 out of 5 stars Fascinating topic overcomes less-than-crisp treatment.......2002-04-07

The story of how Times Square, and, in particular, 42nd Street, was finally rescued is fascinating, but it's blurred in this treatment. Sagalyn is an academic, and unfortunately, it shows. It reads like a long series of New York Times Arts & Leisure section essays by a critic. All the info is in there, but it's somewhat exhausting to wade through. One suspects the same info could have been delivered more elegantly in half the number of words.

Given the rather expensive price, wait to see whether there's a paperback version. But anyone who's interested in the history and development of NYC will find it worthwhile.

4 out of 5 stars Wet, Wet, Wet.......2002-06-02

I found this book at a Book Outlet store and thought "for the price, I should get it", so I did. I have to tell you that this is one of the best books to use to build up confidence and technical skills in wet into wet watercolor painting. Each chapter is fun to read and the examples (step by step) are so easy to follow that they help you become an "expert" by the end of the book. I have lots of watercolor books and have found this to be one of my favorites on wet into wet technique for the above reasons.

        5 out of 5 stars Wet-in-Wet Watercolor.......1999-11-25

Ms Speckman's book helped me break through to a new level of watercolor painting. She deals entirely with "wet-in-wet", breaking it down into three sections: The Saturated Approach, Painting by Sections and the Painterly Approach. Beginning with a practical and thorough discussion of paper and pigments as they apply specifically to wet-in-wet watercolor, she proceeds to original and effective step-by-step instruction. Although I have purchased and worked from many books on instructional watercolor, I found Ms. Speckmann's techniques to be unusual and exciting. I particularly enjoy her iconoclastic preference for opaque pigments and the way she showcases their unique qualities. Well written and lavishly illustrated, this book is a valuable reference work.

        Book Description

The sky is a never-ending source of inspiration for artists, poets, and anyone who has found peace in contemplating clouds or a colorful sunset. Whether viewed from below or from above—with the help of satellite images—the pictures in this new addition to White Star's popular CubeBooks series convey the many faces of the sky. Colorful images capture the violent force of tempestuous storms as well as the glorious sunrises, sunsets, and northern lights that are reflections of nature's gentler side. Readers view the sky in horizons that frame both the most beautiful natural parks and landscapes in the world and the skylines of the world's most sophisticated cities. Spectacular views of flocks of migratory birds pose a fascinating contrast to images of people "flying" in extreme sports such as paragliding, sky-diving or through the impressive maneuvers of acrobatic air squads. Throughout the book, insightful captions provide fascinating facts about meteorological phenomena and other heavenly tidbits. With its stunning full-page spreads, the Cubebook format is ideal for showcasing sweeping cloud formations, dramatic weather patterns, and vast expanses of deep, pure blue sky. Accessible and delightfully tactile, The Sky Cubebook will appeal to readers of all ages.

5 out of 5 stars Looking up .......2006-11-13

This book is a real pleasure. Its photos of the sky at various times, places, angles show us how beautiful our life can be if we only look up. The book aside from the photos which are its heart explains what the 'sky' is and how it relates to our ordinary life perceptions and the insights into the universe given to us by our scientific instruments. When looking at this book I had in mind the traditional Jewish teaching , that a person should always 'look up' when they walk. That is the Sky is not only the Sky not only the colors and shapes of what we see but rather is suggestive of what is Beyond us, of a realm which helps us dream and hope.
This is a truly enjoyable little album, and one I think many guests would delight in taking from the coffee- table and leafing through.

                      Book Description

During the past fifteen years, changes in technology have generated an extraordinary array of new ways in which music and movies can be produced and distributed. Both the creators and the consumers of entertainment products stand to benefit enormously from the new systems. Sadly, we have failed thus far to avail ourselves of these opportunities. Instead, much energy has been devoted to interpreting or changing legal rules in hopes of defending older business models against the threats posed by the new technologies. These efforts to plug the multiplying holes in the legal dikes are failing and the entertainment industry has fallen into crisis. This provocative book chronicles how we got into this mess and presents three alternative proposals—each involving a combination of legal reforms and new business models—for how we could get out of it.

5 out of 5 stars Essential military history of the Vietnam war.......2005-02-16

This is as terrifying an account of the Vietnam war as I've ever read. Forget the melodrama and sensationalism that characterized much of Vietnam war literature in the early and mid-eighties: Nolan's sparse style and clear representation of what took place on the DMZ in the summer of 1967 will give you nightmares. Don't look to find refuge here in a simple war story: Nolan tenaciously presents history as it unfolds.

5 out of 5 stars Love and Hate.......2004-12-01

This is a must have book for your library. After over 30 years you forget why you hated Vietnam until you read a book that brings back all the memories. This is such a book. I served with 1/1 and 3/1 after these battles and am amazed that keith Nolan is able to bring to life what it meant to serve in a Marine Corps Infantry Bn in Vietnam. I got angry, I laughed and I cried as I read this book. At times I felt like I could reach out and touch some of the people, the writing was so vivid. Everyone should read this book and remember what the Marines paid in blood for that war. THANK YOU USMC for what you gave me and THANK YOU Marines all over the world protecting us now.

5 out of 5 stars My friends were there..........2004-08-21

My friend Beetle was there. Lee Burns was there. Others were there. Nolan writes almost as if HE were there. It happened before I got in-country, but it was a legendary fight by legendary Marines and Nolan tells the story so very well. I am proud to have helped carry these Marines in my helicopters and supported them in every way possible. They are heroes in the truest sense of that so misused word. This book is an EXCELLENT read!

                          5 out of 5 stars I was there!!.......2002-12-05

All I want to say is that I was there in Brovo 1/9 I lost my best friend there and to this day I still have a hard time with it, as I'm sure I always will. I love this country and I'm prood to say that I'm a Marine.

5 out of 5 stars this book got me "into" reading mil history.......2002-06-24

I picked this book up on the recommendation of a friend several years ago. I grew up on Navy bases around the country and had disdain for the military life. But,I grew up and realized the value of our soldiers. Reading this book I got goose bumps and actually felt the tension of the call "incoming!". These guys were incredibly brave (or foolish!) I don't think any of us who have not been in combat can really appreciate the terror of it but Nolan does a good job of getting that accross! I now have a profound respect for all branches of the military and read every "oral history" book I can lay my hands on. (I wish my dad would write about his 2 1/2 years over there...but he won't say a word)

                              Book Description

The Jews of Bielorussia During World War II provides a unique account of the underground resistance in the ghettos of Bielorussia during the Nazi occupation. Using contemporary documentation and harrowing testimonies of survivors, Cholawsky, the commander of a Jewish partisan unit between 1942 and 1945, presents a detailed portrait of the clandestine fighting forces that emerged from the forests of Bielorussia. Through this account emerges a powerful image of the vitality of Bielorussian Jewry.
This is the first book of its kind and is intended for all levels of readership, from researchers to Holocaust survivors and their children who wish to learn of their heritage and experiences of their forefathers.
