    Book Description

In this abundantly illustrated volume, Bernard Herman provides a history of urban dwellings and the people who built and lived in them in early America. In the eighteenth century, cities were constant objects of idealization, often viewed as the outward manifestations of an organized, civil society. As the physical objects that composed the largest portion of urban settings, town houses contained and signified different aspects of city life, argues Herman.

Taking a material culture approach, Herman examines urban domestic buildings from Charleston, South Carolina, to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, as well as those in English cities and towns, to better understand why people built the houses they did and how their homes informed everyday city life. Working with buildings and documentary sources as diverse as court cases and recipes, Herman interprets town houses as lived experience. Chapters consider an array of domestic spaces, including the merchant family's house, the servant's quarter, and the widow's dower. Herman demonstrates that city houses served as sites of power as well as complex and often conflicted artifacts mapping the everyday negotiations of social identity and the display of sociability.

1 out of 5 stars Not for the experienced painter..........2005-06-17

This book offers little direction and even less information on decorative glass/porcelain painting. The ideas are simple, the instruction, also simple, and if you have already experimented with painting on glass and are are looking for more than foufou advice, I would suggest you skip this book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Information and Great Projects! 5 Star Plus!.......2002-09-15

I really have enjoyed this book! I am not what I would consider an artist and I needed something I could do easily at home. This book gave me all the information I needed to know about all the paints on the market, and all of the relevant tools I needed - making it very easy to shop, and there was a project that worked with each of the paints. The projects are great, they are not cheesy like some other books I have but, rather they are elegant, classic, tasteful and easy to duplicate. You will find lots of great ideas and I found the book easy to follow, inspiring, full of very useful information, and something fun I can handle. As the author, Carin Heiden Atkins, says something like this in her introduction - leave your worries at the door, sit back, play your favorite music, and have a great time. You really can do this. I have recommended this book to many friends and I whole heartedly recommend this book to you.

5 out of 5 stars Elegant and Easy!.......2001-11-05

Carin Heiden Atkins has provided thirteen gorgeous projects; from whimsical to elegant, from kids parties to champagne toasts . . . this book has it all. There are full-color step-by-step photos showing you how to paint each piece. If you want to learn to paint the gorgeous glass pieces that are all the rage now in the shops, this book is a great place to start.

These are projects that do not require firing and are perfect for the person who is trying to create the style of painting found in upscale shops today. This is a book that I definitely recommend to crafters wanting to try glass painting.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for do it yourself painters.......2001-11-05

I don't know where the one disparaging review came from I rather disagree with the reviewer, she obviously didn't read what the book was about before she ordered and was expecting something completely different and was very unfair to Ms. Heiden Atkins in her review.

For those of you who want to learn about the various non toxic paints you can safely use at home and count on for durability this is the book for you. Carin has a very easy to understand approach to glass and porcelain painting (on finished whiteware).
It was very helpful when I went to my local craft store as a shopping guide and the project I chose (the cheery cherry platter) turned out beautifully. Thank you Carin Heiden Atkins for creating a very helpful and creative book.

      Your work is appreciated!

3 out of 5 stars Painting on finished porcelain/china and glass..........2001-10-21

This book is good for those looking for projects on finished porcelain and glass. Great for the novice, and the craft industry has a huge selection of paint which can be used for Atkins' projects. Her projects are simple for the beginner who is looking for a starting place in artistic porcelain and glass painting. A beginning artist may adapt Atkins' ideas into unique designs and have a finished product in very little time.

These projects do not include "true" porcelain or china painting on bisque. For those looking to learn painting on china (as in Limoges, Royal Doulton or Staffordshire China, etc.), "The China Decorator" magazine offers wonderful advice in learning this art as well as including several other excellent resources.

Well, maybe not everything, but there is much you can do with Flash 5, and How To Do Everything with Macromedia Flash 5 can show you just about all of it. It's an excellent book for those new to Flash or with only some experience. Many concepts are well illustrated, using screen shots to help explain the technique. Each chapter begins with a bulleted list of the goals in the chapter, clearly outlining the targets of discussion.

For designers with some Flash experience, the sections on "Assigning ActionScripts to Buttons and Frames" and "Building Interactive Movies" are where both Flash and this book begin to really shine. Understanding object-oriented programming and learning to use ActionScript are vital talents for anything more than pedestrian Flash work, and these sections provide a solid foundation on which to build. Numerous simple examples demonstrate useful concepts that can be applied to larger projects, such as using buttons to control the playback of not only the Flash movie in which the button is embedded but other movies as well ("nested movie clips"), and using variables and strings in scripts.

While the book doesn't come with a CD, it does include some terrific features such as a 23-page index, and an appendix listing a plethora of Flash sites that offer developer assistance, code examples, and links to some of the best Flash sites on the Web. Each chapter is clearly written and well illustrated. If the book could make coffee, then it really could do everything. --Mike Caputo

Topics covered: Sixteen chapters spanning 500 pages cover everything from early planning and how it affects approaching the project, exploring the interface, and basic Flash principals; to creating and animating in Flash, creating artwork for import, using such Flash features as symbols, libraries, and instances; and on to animation techniques and interactivity.

2 out of 5 stars I wonder about some of these glowing reviews..........2002-08-24

Despite the author's impressive credentials, I found this book to be poorly written. Despite the incessant mention of careful planning when using Flash, the author didn't seem to plan well herself. The chapters often tend to veer off topic, and the explanations are excessively wordy and often ambiguous or unclear. The useful content of this book could be easily condensed into one about 1/4 the size. There are also numerous mistakes throughout the book. While this is not uncommon in technical books these days, one would think that somebody would sit down and actually read the book before it is published. The code examples, which must be downloaded from the publisher's web site, often don't match up with the text. This as well as the errors and typos can make it very confusing to somebody actually trying to learn something. In addition, despite the glossy, colorful cover, this is a one-color book. Several times, there are references to color in the figures as if the book was originally intended to be printed with color examples. If you want a wordy, haphazard guide to Flash with poor direction and basic content get this book. If you're starting from scratch and want to learn how to do everything with Flash, look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars This book is the bomb!.......2002-05-25

To be honest, I haven't indulged in alot of Flash Text, this is my first, but its so easy to read, so easy to understand, at times its almost as if my mind is being read...."Oh that's what this is for!"

I glanced on others including 'Macromedia's Flash 5 Bible' and it was due to my exposure to 'How to do...' that made me understand most of the syntax used.

This is a great book for beginners and for those who always wanted to know 'How to do everything with Flash 5'.

      Highly Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Best AS Book out There!.......2002-03-18

As a professor of multimedia at an art institution in Boston, I must say, I was quite impressed by the thoroughness of "How to Do Everything with Macromedia Flash 5" by Bonnie Blake. I am using this e-book in a Basic Motion Graphics class and student feedback is very positive. It is an easy read and basic Flash info is simple to absorb. I also highly recommend the Colin Moock, ActionScript book from O'Reilly. For those ready for the next step, this is the best AS book out there.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding coverage with great projects!.......2002-03-18

Since I'm in the animation business, it's part of my job to read everything on the subject of Flash and other software products. This book is outstanding. It's truly a How To book and covers in specific detail all of those functions and features that you would be likely to use in your job or as a teacher. It is well written, precise, concise and substantiative. It makes you feel comfortable using Flash 5. The web resource guide is excellent and extremely helpful. I rate this book very highly and I recommend it to my departmental employees who are required to utilize Flash!

      5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2002-03-16

This book is incredibly well written and informative. I was looking for something more substantial than the manual and I found it. This book is full of examples from basic Actionscript to things like preloaders. Easy to read. I would recommend it to the beginner-intermediate Flash user.

"YEARNING TO BREATHE FREE" is the sequel to "SICILY ON MY MIND" published in July of 2003. Both books summarize the essence of the author's life: The turbulent beginnings in Sicily, the generous American welcome and the continuing journey into the heart of America. In addition, the author endeavors to show the dissimilarities of the two worlds in which he lived, pertaining to life's priorities, human values and spiritual convictions. It is evident, throughout the book, that the author owes a debt of gratitude to America, the land that made it possible for him to realize his life's dream. Finally, the author expresses his belief that present America is in urgent need of an effective leadership as well as a spiritual rebirth, to secure her God-given destiny.

My daughter has a heart defect and I've used this and 2 of her other books to obtain "flow-through grants" to help with the medical expenses. Try looking in your hospital library for a copy and if they don't have one try the medical social workers. This book is well-organized, and is a great benifit to those who use it.

              Book Description

All his life, Greg McPartlin wanted to be a Marine corpsman, a medic skilled at saving lives. Three months of "bagging-and-tagging" bodies during Vietnam's Tet Offensive took the luster off being a Marine-but not off McPartlin's desire to serve his country.

After assisting in the sea-recovery of Apollo 11-the first ship to bring men to the moon-the twenty-year-old McPartlin was redeployed to Vietnam as an elite Navy SEAL. Barred as a medic by the Geneva Convention from the make-or-break training considered vital to service as a Navy SEAL, McPartlin had to show he had what it took.

In a war where soldiers partied with their buddies in Saigon one day and crawled through an enemy-infested jungle hell the next, McPartlin proved that he was not only an outstanding medic but a real Navy SEAL-the toughest of the tough.

Combat Corpsman is McPartlin's account of his year in what had been a Viet Cong stronghold until the SEALs took control. It's the first inside story of a Navy SEAL medic, a man who wanted to heal-not to kill-but did both to save lives.

Greg McPartlin's lively, well-written account of his service with the Seal Teams in Vietnam is a classic. One of the best openings I've read in a long time.

5 out of 5 stars The toughest of the toughest.......2006-11-11

If Navy SEALs are considered the toughest combat troops in the US forces, then their corpsmen have to be the toughest of the toughest. Here is the story of a young man's search for significance and adventure played out in the crucible of Vietnam. Young men like Mr. McPartlin are America's greatest asset. That there are such men in an the modern age of cynicism and distrust is nothing short of amazing. As the legendary Col. John Boyd was fond of reminding us, "machines don't fight wars, people do, and they use their minds." Upon reading this book, one would add "the toughest use their heart."

In this book, Mr. McPartlin takes us to the heart of the warrior code. Along the way he applies that code not just to a passion for battle but a passion for the lives of his fellow warriors as well as the enemy combatants he finds in his care. Here is the epitomy of an American warrior hero. Mr. McPartlin represents the kind of American warrior we all wish we could be - courageous, tough, and yet without loss of compassion. The toughest of the tough are those willing to care in the face of hopeless and impossible situations. Once you start the journey with Mr. McPartlin, you will want to carry on to the end.

              5 out of 5 stars U.S. Navy SEAL Medic.......2006-07-09

This is a very readable and informing memoir by a past Marine and eventual Navy SEAL Corpsman, better known as "Doc" to all those broken in combat he mended.

The majority of the book tells of his service in Vietnam during the mid to late 1960's, with the west coast branch of SEALS. Most SEALS were only stationed in country for 6 months at a time, for as the author states, the constant intensity could dull their senses, and that could cost them their lives. The North Vietnamese put bounties on all these "green faced men" hoping to kill a SEAL whenever possible. The bounty was both a tribute of their respect for the SEALS but also a sign of their deep-seated fear of the SEALS.

I was leaving the Navy to come back for college at about the time Greg McPartlin was entering the Navy. So some of the topics he talks about are very familiar to me, but a reader does not need to be "prior service" to read and enjoy this book.

In a review written for The Military Book Club recently, I stated that this book is one of very few excellent books it's been my good fortune to encounter. His story and that of his fellow SEALS will give the reader an insider's view of the "above and beyond" nature of service all these men gave, and each of these individuals are true heroes in the best sense of the word. Though undoubtedly each would not find that a compliment with which they are comfortable. They, for example, would turn down a Purple Heart award, unless they were terribly wounded. No rear echelon types here; however that may be, all of these men are some of the finest to ever wear the uniform of the United States.

Only two items would have made this a stronger book: a good map of Vietnam showing the area Mr. McPartlin describes; and a few pictures of all the men in his group. But that not withstanding, this is a very readable and memorable book written by a combatant as seen through the eyes of a medic. A truly unique writing from one who not only took lives, but saved lives.

                        Book Description

This book is the first systematic comparison of the civic integration of Jews in the United States and France--specifically, from the two countries' revolutions through the American republic and the Napoleonic era (1775-1815). Frederic Jaher develops a vehicle for a broader and uniquely rich analysis of French and American nation-building and political culture. He returns grand theory to historical scholarship by examining the Jewish encounter with state formation and Jewish acquisition of civic equality from the perspective of the "paradigm of liberal inclusiveness" as formulated by Alexis de Tocqueville and Louis Hartz.

Jaher argues that the liberal paradigm worked for American Jews but that France's illiberal impulses hindered its Jewish population in acquiring full civic rights. He also explores the relevance of the Tocqueville-Hartz theory for other marginalized groups, particularly blacks and women in France and America. However, the experience of these groups suggests that the theory has its limits.

A central issue of this penetrating study is whether a state with democratic-liberal pretensions (America) can better protect the rights of marginalized enclaves than can a state with authoritarian tendencies (France). The Tocqueville-Hartz thesis has become a major issue in political science, and this book marks the first time it has been tested in a historical study. The Jews and the Nation returns a unifying theory to a discipline fragmented by microtopical scholarship.
