    Book Description

    Many of us fall in love with tree houses as children but leave them behind when we grow up.These days, though, more and more adults are rediscovering the joys of arboreal hideaways. In this stunningly illustrated volume, the tree houses of fantasy become reality as we explore 20 actual tree houses from around the world. While providing many of the comforts of a home on the ground, they add the advantages of a gentle swaying and the spectacular, leafy views that only a tree house can offer. These projects exhibit gorgeous designs that utilize innovative materials and methods of construction. Each case study includes interior and exterior photography by some of the finest architectural photographers working today; drawings including site plans, details, and floor plans; and concise, informative text that highlights design and technical aspects.

                    Book Description

                    From the Impresario of NBC’s hit show The Apprentice

                    TRUMP ON TRUMP: “I like thinking big. I always have. To me it’s very simple: if you’re going to be thinking anyway, you might as well think big.”

                    And here’s how he does it: the art of the deal.

                    Beginning with a week in Trump’s high-stakes life, Trump: The Art of the Deal gives us Trump in action. We see just how he operates day to day—how he runs his business and how he runs his life—as he chats with friends and family, clashes with enemies, efficiently buys up Atlantic City’s top casinos, changes the face of the New York City skyline . . . and plans the tallest building in the world.

                    TRUMP ON TRUMP: “I play it very loose. I don’t carry a briefcase. I try not to schedule too many meetings. I leave my door open. . . . I prefer to come to work each day and just see what develops.”

                    Even a maverick plays by rules, and here Trump formulates his own eleven guidelines for success. He isolates the common elements in his greatest deals; he shatters myths (“You don’t necessarily need the best location. What you need is the best deal”); he names names, spells out the zeros, and fully reveals the deal-maker’s art: from the abandoned property that became the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center to the seedy hotel that became the Grand Hyatt; from the race to rebuild Central Park’s Wollman Skating Rink to the byzantine saga of the property that became Trump Tower. And throughout, Trump talks—really talks—about how he does it.

                    TRUMP ON TRUMP: “I always go into a deal anticipating the worst. If you plan for the worst—if you can live with the worst—the good will always take care of itself.”

                    Donald Trump is blunt, brash, surprisingly old-fashioned in spots—and always, always an original. Trump: The Art of the Deal is an unguarded look at the mind of a brilliant entrepreneur and an unprecedented education in the art of the deal. It’s the most streetwise business book there is—and a sizzling read for anyone interested in money and success.

                    Unless your a fan of this braggard, who's gone

                    parts are not that good. Yes, I was glad to see the
                    USFL challenge the overrated NFL and yes, I was glad

                    makes so many wrong statements in here that one has

                    World Football League didn't start in 1973, it was
                    1974-75. He also lied about Don Shula, Miami's
                    legendary Coach about to come Coach the USFL's
                    New Jersey team. Trump claims Shula nixed the deal

                    - Free! He claims Larry Csonka's idea to merge the
                    CFL (is something like that were posible) was a
                    bad idea caliming that the CFL had a bunch of nobody
                    players - totally untrue! They still to this day have
                    many great players. NFL QBs like Trent Green, Jeff
                    Garcia and others have CFL experience. Trump's sign-
                    ing of Doug Flutie was a highlight to be sure. It was
                    the third straight Heisman winner the USFL beat out
                    the NFL from getting in their league although they
                    all went there later. Get Flutie's book entitled
                    Flutie for the real story. It took Flutie until 1988
                    to get all his money owed him. Trump's main loss in
                    a USFL sense was bribing the other USFL owners to
                    going to the fall. Yes, this artsie-fartsie dealer
                    is slick. But is always comes back around and now
                    he is on the Apprentice. And dumb commercials.R.I.P.

                    5 out of 5 stars I just really enjoyed it.......2007-09-10

                    So this book is not a plain "how to" book. That's fine. If you have just enough skill, you'll find that this is not only great story telling about how he put all these deals together that made him millions upon millions, but also how he did it. He throws bits of his psychology around through out the book, those are easy to catch, and if you look just a little deeper you'll see all the other points that helped make him so rich, things like: persuasion, hard work, calculated risk, being involved in your business, don't leave things to chance, work with the best, don't be afraid of something you don't know, find ways to make things work for you, etc. I could go on and on.

                    Don't expect this to be your "how to make deals manual" but if you are the right person, you just might get more pointers than you expect. Like I said in the title, I just really enjoyed this book, regardless of what it is not.

                    5 out of 5 stars Oldie but a Goodie.......2007-09-03

                    This book may be 20 years old, but the practices explained are as timely today as they were then. The basics rarely change, whether you are dealing in real estate or producing a product. The chapters are concise, solid stories on how deals were put together, obsticles overcome and politics played. Mr. Trump's style is an easy read and explains the game that he loves and makes no apologies for; making money. I found it a fascinating book.

                    4 out of 5 stars Ahhh The Donald............2007-07-25

                    Dont expect to get much advice on how to negociate a deal.. even though the book is titled "The art of the deal" The book is more so about Trump, his life and his business dealings. Its still pretty good reading none the less. 4 Stars.

                    4 out of 5 stars I'm not a big fan of Trump.......2007-07-01

                    But I have to be honest; I thought the book was great. Mostly, I'm not a big fan because I find him to be vein, pompous, arrogant, and a blatant self-promoter. You have to give it to him though, this is what works for him, and this is what has made Donald Trump a household name. I think he'd be successful regardless, but like most successful developers he wouldn't be a celebrity (how many millionaire developers do you know?). The beautiful thing about it is he's pretty honest about his strategy in the book. This book was written 20 years ago, and even then he was the same guy. He understands the power of promotion, even if it's self-promotion.

                    There are several things I loved about the book. First, his blatant honesty about himself, the reason why he does the things he does, and his opinions on his rivals. He comes clean about his strategy for calling everything he does the best, greatest, or biggest "in the world". He knows it may or may not be true, but he's just after the effect of those powerful words, and not whether or not they can be contested.

                    Second, I enjoyed the journey of traveling through his mind, as he contemplates the pros and cons, and finally the reason for moving forward with or declining the deals described in his book.

                    Lastly, I really felt like you get a better understanding of what his day-to-day is like. Even thought this is 20 years ago, his routine is probably about the same, doing a thousand things at once. All of which must meet his standard for tremendous scale and proportion.

                    Trump has a strategy, and his arrogance is part of it. He has reached his many goals and for him, life is really about these challenges, and the fun of surpassing them and getting to the finish line. This hobby of his has amounted to a tremendous personal fortune. But in the end, it's clear that it's not so much about the money, as it is about winning. You can take away some pretty valuable lessons from this book.

                    So regardless of how you feel about the guy, the book is worth checking out. It's no masterpiece (thus my 4 stars), but it is entertaining, insightful, somewhat motivating and instructive, and a very easy read. Definitely recommend.

                                  Real estate titan, bestselling author, and TV impresario Donald J. Trump reveals the secrets of his success. With his characteristic brass and smarts, Trump offers insights on how to:

                                  3 out of 5 stars Informative??? .......2007-08-06

                                  As a former employee of the Trump International Hotel and Tower, I feel the book lacks the real value of a lesson. I believe Mr. Trump has an incredible ability to market himself to the public. However after being employed by the Trump Organization, I can honestly say the company does not portray the mannerism of leadership set forth in this book. The book is a motivational tool set for individuals chasing a non-reality dream, which allows Mr. Trump to once again market himself as a money making guru. However all the objectives in the book are intended for people who have already established financial security, it is not a lesson on "How to Get Rich"!

                                  5 out of 5 stars A very inspiring read!.......2007-05-31

                                  I truly enjoyed Donald Trump's views on "how to get rich" - after all, his success is great proof!!

                                  3 out of 5 stars Misleading title and no end to the boasting.......2007-05-18

                                  This book won't make you rich. It reflects Trumps personal business philosophy and is quite an interesting, sincere and fast paced read. The book is flawed by a misleading title and Trump's constant bragging. Is it worth a read? Yes, it is.

                                  2 out of 5 stars Not a useful book.......2007-02-12

                                  This book isn't going to be useful for someone looking to use it as a guide to get rich. I doubt Donald Trump even wrote this book. It reads like a book written by a ghost writer giving out simple cliches with no actual substance behind them. Very dissapointing.

                                  3 out of 5 stars Buried Gifts and Gems!.......2007-01-22

                                  Donald Trump is one of the most unique figures in our nation's modern business history. He is a BRAND MACHINE and he utilizes the brand 'The Donald' to his advantage by giving us one great book (Art of the Deal) a few years ago with some quick reads to get us thinking and have a little fun in the process. This book is of course the latter.

                                  'How to Get Rich' is not a soup-to-nuts read on how to get rich, yet there are some buried gifts and gems that if you keep your eyes open, you may want to underline and reference from time-to-time regardless if you are a business leader or aspire to be a business leader. Throughout the pages of this book, he has such time-tested leadership advice sprinkled throughout with some points for the entrepeneur/business leader to keep in mind. I will point out a few that I enjoyed and you will likely find useful as well:

                                  - "Keep the big picture in mind while attending to the daily details";
                                  - Remain viligent by staying sharp in your field;
                                  - Hire a great assistant - so true; a great assistant can really make your life so much easier;
                                  - Staying stubborn;
                                  - Holding a grudge (when necessary);
                                  - Letting your guard down as a negotiating tool to your advantage

                                  There are other gems buried within this book and as most of the time, Donald is entertaining. Some sections of the book will bring to mind Jack Welch with a splash (actually a heavy dose) of humor.

                                  This is not a book about getting rich per say, but there are treasures of advice and wisdom buried that if you have time on a Sunday afternoon, you may want to type and paste to your wall or time-keeper.

                                  The 3-star review is based on expectations of what many of us have come to expect from a Donald Trump post 'Art of the Deal' read. It is not a must read nor would I recommend this book if you are looking for some meat-and-potatoes of getting rich - you will only get frustrated (very, very frustrated). However, if you like The Donald brand and his tactic (thus his title) -- have some fun, dig out the gems of wisdom, and keep near the table in your front office -- it beats putting out old, dated copies of 'Sports Illustrated.'

                                      Book Description

                                      In Couple Burnout, Ayala Pines offers a unique model to combat relationship burnout. Drawing from extensive research and years of clinical work, Pines describes the phenomenon of couples burnout; its causes, danger signs and symptoms; and the most effective strategies therapists can use with couples.

                                      Distinguishing burnout from problems caused by clinical depression or other pathologies, Pines combines three major clinical perspectives that are used by couple therapists--psychodynamic, systems and behavioral--with additional approaches that focus attention on the social- psychological perspective and existential perspective to couples' problems. This framework emphasizes the normal process of attrition intimate relationships experience as well as the existential significance people look for in their relationships.

                                      Using dozens of case studies for illustration, Couple Burnout offers detailed instructions for therapists interested in applying this conceptual framework to their work with individuals, couples and couple groups. Issues of gender differences in burnout, of balancing intimate relationships with careers and of burnout in sex are addressed in individual chapters.

                                      3 out of 5 stars Lee and Meade - Leadership Styles and Tactical Decisions.......2005-02-07

                                      For the reader already familiar with a Gettysburg account by a recent historian like Shelby Foote, James McPherson, or Harry Pfanz, I recommend They Met at Gettysburg as a good choice for follow-up reading. Written in 1956 by General Edward J. Stackpole, this moderately sized book offers an interesting analysis of Lee's and Meade's contrasting leadership styles, and explores their tactical decisions.

                                      Stackpole's interest is clearly revealed by chapter titles like Lee versus Meade - A Study in Leadership, Meade Takes Command, Lee Moves in as Meade Hesitates, The Opposing Commanders Review the Situation, and A Lost Opportunity to End the War.

                                      The account of the battle itself is generally satisfactory, but it is not exceptional. Stackpole's concise reporting on Pickett's Charge lacks the emotional impact of Shelby Foote's remarkable narrative. And, there are surprising omissions. For example, while he fully credits General Warren, Meade's Chief Engineer, for plugging the gap when he discovered that Little Round Top had been left unoccupied, there is no reference to the role played by Joshua Chamberlain and the 20th Maine in the actual defense of this little rocky mount.

                                      Stackpole is at his best when discussing communication problems, troop movements, supply problems, and other tactical issues. For example, in examining how J.E.B. Stuart's long absence impacted Lee's situation, he concludes that Lee's detailed, but somewhat unclear directions to Stuart, contributed to this debacle. Also, in Stackpole's view, Lee could have used other readily available cavalry forces to offset Stuart's absence.

                                      Longstreet comes under considerable scrutiny and fares rather poorly, much more so than in the hands of Michael Shaara in The Killer Angels, or in Shelby Foote's account. Stackpole's portrayal of Meade is mixed. While recognizing Meade's difficult situation as a replacement general on the eve of a critical battle, Stackpole largely credits the key tactical decisions over the three days to Meade's capable corps commanders.

                                      On the plus side, They Met at Gettysburg is enhanced by numerous photos, portraits, and maps, but unfortunately some black and white illustrations are rather grainy. (Gettysburg 1863 by Carl Smith is a good source for higher quality illustrations.)

                                      I reviewed the third edition; the dust jacket indicates that my printing is the 40th Anniversary Edition.

                                      4 out of 5 stars A different read on Gettysburg.......2003-07-31

                                      Do not buy this book if you wanted a detailed blow by blow description of the battle, see Coddington's work for a great study of the battle. While sections of the book do have detailed analysis and descriptions it's the look at the command structure that sets this book apart.

                                      Stackpole goes to great lengths to show the differences between Meade and Lee and how these differences affected the ebb and flow over the course of the 3 days in question. I've read many books on Gettysburg and there was something about this book that really appealed to me, whether it was the way the author presented the material or his writing style I can't say but I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

                                      3 out of 5 stars Sometimes Excelling, Sometimes Severely Lacking..........2001-06-27

                                      Like many other Civil War books focusing of specific battles, They Met at Gettysburg is excellent in some respects, and strongly lacking in others. The book does excel in the aspects of history leading up to the battle of Gettysburg, and as a study of the generals that were a critical part of that battle. What it lacks is an adequate description of the battle itself. The immortal Pickett's Charge does not get nearly the description it warrants, and the heroic defense of Little Round Top by Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain and his 20th Maine (which has filled entire books on its own) does not even get a single mention. Thus, this book does have some strong points, and should be read by anyone strongly interested in the leaders at Gettysburg. For a true work about the battle itself, however, look elsewhere.

                                      3 out of 5 stars A Study in Command........2000-07-25

                                      As Civil War histories go, this book is unusual. One could expect from the title a blow by blow account of the battle of Gettysburg. Instead, what is offered is a study in leadership contrasts between Robert E. Lee and George Meade. Lee is presented as perhaps America's greatest general fighting his worst battle. Meade is portrayed as an uninspired mediocrity that benefited greatly from his corps commanders and fortuitous circumstances.

                                      Much of the familiar litany of Gettysburg lore is mentioned, but not re-hashed in great detail. J.E.B. Stuart's failure to provide timely reconnaissance, James Longstreet's lack of enthusiasm for Lee's offensive strategy and tactics, Richard Ewell's failure to secure the high ground on Cemetery Hill and Culps Hill are briefly examined. In addition, the inability of either Ewell or A. P. Hill to replace Stonewall Jackson as an effective corps commander is discussed. These facts provide the framework that gave Lee the impetus to strike "those people" (as he called the Union Army) in his own way. The ghost of Stonewall Jackson, who crossed over the river at Chancellorsville, haunts the scene. The pairing of Lee and Jackson caused some of the most spectacular victories of the Confederate Army, and Stonewall's loss was still keenly felt. One can only imagine what Jackson would have done with Lee's order to attack Little Round Top, or the Union center along Cemetery Ridge.

                                      While Lee aggressively yearned to strike the enemy, Meade hesitated. At one point, Meade gave serious consideration to a retreat. Finally, he let his corps commanders vote the idea down. After the failure of Pickett's charge, Meade failed to take the initiative to counterattack Lee and deliver the fatal blow that could have ended the war.

                                      The material is presented objectively, without particular bias. The book openly admires Robert E. Lee, but so do many. The brutal fact that Gettysburg may very well be Lee's worst fought battle is not glossed over. The failure of some of Lee's lieutenants to show their best effort is not used as an excuse to cover "Marse Robert's" errors. The reader doesn't hang on every word, but reading of the various commanders' abilities and limitations is informative. In addition, there is an abundance of illustrations and detailed maps that assist the reader in following some of the technical details. This Civil War book has value for the serious Civil War buff.

                                      4 out of 5 stars A Study of Minds rather than one of a Battle.......1997-05-14

                                      They Met at Gettysburg is an good intermediate level text of the battle. Stackpole, a retired Army general, knows his subject and digs deep into the minds of Lee and Meade. There is much more emphasis on troop movements and battle philosophy than on the actual fighting. For instance, Pickett's Charge earns less than 5 pages of text in a 400 page book. Stackpole is also a little harder on General Longstreet, and softer on Lee, than one would expect. He repeatedly says this was Lee's worst battle, but just as often says that Lee was far superior to Meade, Longstreet, and everyone else on the field. A little hero worship, perhaps. You can see the references to this book in Michael Shaara's The Killer Angels, except that Shaara has a more favorable impression of Longstreet. All in all, a fine book, but not as good as I anticipated

                                                          Book Description

                                                          This dissertation involves a preliminary study into the structural dynamic behavior of the NASA Manned Spacecraft Center (MSC), located in the Flight Acceleration Facility, bldg 29, in Houston, Texas. The 50-ft. arm can swing the three-man gondola to create g-forces astronauts will experience during controlled flight and during reentry. The centrifuge was designed primarily for training Apollo astronauts. During operation of the centrifuge, the astronauts can control the motion of the gondola in two gimbal axes, while the gondola is rotating about its principal axis, to simulate flight activity. The result of these coupled motions lead to transient loading functions, which arise due to rigid body kinematics.

                                                          The study is describe in three Chapters. Chapter 1 deals with the response of a simplified model of the arm, gimbal and gondola structure for the purpose of obtaining dynamic response factors to be associated with the arm. Chapter 2 deals briefly with a simplified model of the same system for the purpose of obtaining dynamic response factors to be associated with the gimbal ring and to justify the simplifications implicit in the model used in Chapter 1. In Chapter 3, the rigid body kinematic equations are studied in order to develop relations between the forcing functions utilized in Chapters 1 and 2 and the motion parameters of the kinematic analysis. Using these relations, the dynamic response factors tabulated in Chapters 1 and 2 in terms of the generalized forcing functions may be interpreted in terms of the motion parameters.

                                                          The following assumptions have been made in order to obtain a solution within a reasonable time period for the preliminary study:

                                                          1. The gondola will be considered to be a rigid body;

                                                          2. The gimbal ring will also be considered to be a rigid body in the analysis of Chapter 1, and will be considered to be a simple spring-mass system in the analysis of Chapter 2;

                                                          3. The arm will be studied as another simple spring-mass system, acting as a uniform cantilever with a mass at its tip;

                                                          4. Small deflection, linear theory will be employed throughout the analysis;

                                                          5. Structural damping will be ignored for conservatism;

                                                          6. Lateral (tangential), vertical and torsional modes will be considered to be uncoupled and studied separately.

                                                          In defense of the apparent over-simplification of the complex system, which would be avoided if time permitted, it is to be observed that the simplifications are not as restrictive as they appear. The reason is that: 1) both the gondola and the gimbal ring are relatively rigid compared to the arm. Since the forcing functions have time durations that are not common in periodicity with the more rigid system but more common with the arm, simplification is permissible (as shown in Chapter 2 and Appendix 6); 2) The lumped parameter method is a conventional method of analysis; 3) Structural damping is small and the effect on transient motion is thus negligible; 4) An analysis (Appendix 3) has shown that coupling between modes does not occur; and 5) Neglecting the extensional mode is a conventional assumption and dynamic augmentation of centrifugal force is negligible.

                                                          The preliminary study of the structural dynamic response of the MSC centrifuge to transient loads resulting from gimbal-controlled motions has been completed. The results of the study are summarized in tables of dynamic response factors for lateral, torsional and vertical modes for three types of generalized impulsive loading functions: 1) a square pulse, 2) a saw-tooth ramp, and 3) a half sine pulse. In Chapter 3 of the study, the rigid body kinematic equations have been analyzed so that these generalized loading functions used in the analysis may be interpreted in terms of the motion parameters.
