Book Description

In the late Qing dynasty (1644-1911) a Chinese merchant named Huang built a house for his family in a small, remote village in the southeastern region of Huizhou in China's Anhui Province. He named the house Yin Yu Tang. For seven generations, members of the Huang family ate, slept, laughed, cried, married, and gave birth in the house. By the mid-1990s, the surviving Huang family members moved away leaving the house empty and abandoned. In 1997 the house was moved to the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts, and opened as a permanent exhibit.Yin Yu Tang provides a fascinating, in-depth look at Chinese domestic culture, architecture, craftsmanship, history, and the impact of these influences on individual lives. Nancy Berliner, one of the country's foremost experts on Chinese furniture and arts, takes the reader on a tour of this unique homestead providing detail on Yin Yu Tang's architecture, construction methods, decoration, furniture, and family heirlooms. She weaves a story of Chinese domestic life, culture, and the remarkable restoration and reconstruction at the Peabody Essex Museum in America.

5 out of 5 stars Exploring how Chinese family life evolved.......2003-09-13

The Yin Yu Tang House has become a public example of an ancient Chinese home as it resides as a permanent exhibit at the Salem, MA Essex Museum. Yin Yu Tang tells of the story behind the house and its creation, examining both Chinese history and architectural traditions in the process of exploring how Chinese family life evolved around this traditional home. Berliner is curator of Chinese art at the Essex Museum and is in the perfect position to consider the lives and traditions revolving around this classic structure.

3 out of 5 stars Mostly larger images, but still a good resource.......2001-05-31

As a graphic designer with a soft spot for period illustration, I love to collect the Dover books that feature Victorian and old-time copyright free images. I used a number of the images in this book, but since some were part of a larger scene and/or somewhat muddy in quality, they all needed a bit of digital touchup. I realize that the images are vintage, but it's hard to use them when the lines run together and some small details are little more than blobs. The large size of most images reflects their original use as multiple-vignette posters, but again this makes it difficult to isolate a single image from the larger overall scene. To conclude on a high note, it is a valuable collection of antique circus images and I do enjoy having it in my library. My client is also pleased with the amusing images I was able to glean for his website....

Book Description

Eadweard Muybridge, one of the great pioneer-innovators of the 19th century, is a familiar figure to students of art history, photography, and cinema. Best known for the photographs of horses and other animals in motion that he made in the 1870s and '80s, Muybridge was the first person to use photography to freeze rapid action for analysis and study. He devised a method for photographing episodes of behavior using a series of cameras, producing some of the most famous sequential photographs ever made. These pictures, the first successful photographs of rapidly moving subjects, revolutionized expectations of what photography could reveal about the natural world, and ultimately led to the invention of the motion picture in the mid-1890s. Time Stands Still is the catalogue that accompanies a major exhibition celebrating Muybridge's fascinating work. Though the instantaneous photography movement stands as a crucial event in the progression of photography to motion pictures, this exhibition represents the first major organized treatment of the subject. Opening in spring 2003 at the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Center for Visual Arts at Stanford University and touring through 2004, it combines an examination of the artist's career in motion photography with a survey of early attempts to photograph moving subjects. Guest curator Phillip Prodger is the primary author of the catalogue, but the book also includes a valuable essay covering cinema's earliest experiments by Tom Gunning, an acknowledged expert on early film from the University of Chicago. The exhibition will display Muybridge's zoopraxiscope and other equipment, drawings, ephemera, and photographs made from the invention of photography in the 1830s to the end of Muybridge's career, which culminated with the publication of his encyclopedic work, Animal Locomotion, in 1887. The photographs and objects are drawn largely from the collection of the Cantor Center and are supplemented with a selection of stop-action photographs from other private and public collections. Among those represented will be the work of Talbot, Rejlander, Maray, Eakins, Edison, the Lumiere Freres, and others.

5 out of 5 stars An explosive and innovative photographic history.......2004-06-15

I have been drawn to the photographs of Eadweard Muybride since childhood -- the jumping horses, running goats etc. have always fascinated me -- but here the author does much better than simply repeat these incredible photographs. He tells you what happened before Muybridge came on the scene; the incredible struggles and sneaky tricks used to make pictures that looked like motion frozen in time. The book is very easy to read - serious, but written in a breezy style that is very accessible. I would recommend this for any history of photography or cinema student. It goes into depth about things that have really never been studied before. Very provocative, highly educational, and very entertaining.

            Book Description

This "excellent" and "invaluable" account of one new teacher's experience in a Brooklyn elementary school classroom illuminates the complex dilemmas currently confounding American public education (The Washington Post)

In the summer of 2000, Donna Moffett, a forty-five-year-old legal secretary, answered an ad for the New York City Teaching Fellows program, which sought to recruit "talented professionals" from other fields to teach in some of the city's worst schools. Seven weeks later she was in a first-grade classroom at P.S. 92 in Flatbush, Brooklyn, almost completely unprepared for what she was about to face.

Abby Goodnough, then a New York Times education reporter, followed Moffett through her first year as a teacher, and wrote an award-winning series of front-page articles that galvanized discussion nationwide. Ms. Moffett's First Year is the expansion of that series into a riveting book that explores the gulf between rhetoric and reality in today's urban schools. This is a provocative, often heartbreaking portrait of the inadequacy of good intentions and of the challenges of educating poor and immigrant populations. It is a story that anyone who cares about this country's children should know.

            Customer Reviews:

            2 out of 5 stars a little self-refelxivity, please?.......2007-07-12

This book, like most cheerful teacher writing, suffers from an overabundance of mushy anecdotes and 'tug at you heart strings' bathos.

Perhaps if the author had focused the spotlight (critically) on herself and on the dubious policies that placed her in these troubled 'inner-city' NYC public schools-without so much as one day classroom training-we as readers would be saddled with one less memoir, and policy-makers, parents, and concerned citizens would understand the importance of re-professionalizing teaching and taking it out of the hands of hobbyists and corporate managers.

            2 out of 5 stars I was really disappointed.......2005-08-09

I was a new teacher in a difficult Baltimore school, and this book was very unrealistic and only scratched the surface of the problem. Ms. Moffett is an angel and to be admired, but the author Abby Goodnough Hollywood-izes her experience and really waters down the problems in inner city schools.

I felt the author didn't really understand the experience of new teachers. She doesn't get into the student's lives at all. She doesn't seem to be upset or outraged by the terrible treatment of Ms. Moffett by the administration. And-- at the end-- she glosses over the fact that most of Ms. Moffett's colleagues leave the profession within a couple of years, meaning that hundreds of students still won't have teachers. This is deeply unfair to the students, but this book skims right over that injustice.

This book is a simple, nice read, but it was not hardhitting enough and it gives no concrete advice or guidance to new teachers.

5 out of 5 stars A realistic look at the challenges of teaching........2005-05-12

This book is written in a breezy, popular style that kept me turning pages right to the end. However, the content is serious, and should be of interest to parents, prospective teachers, and to anyone who cares about children. The book is partly the story of one woman's initiation into the challenging work of teaching in a troubled city school. It is also a book about the politics of education. The author does a good job of explaining the many and varied political forces at work within the world of public schools. I think this book is a fair-minded and very readable introduction to a very complex subject.

            5 out of 5 stars A MUST READ........2004-12-04

I, too, was a New York City Teaching Fellow, and this book tells it like it is in America's urban schools.

If you are already a teacher, this book will reaffirm everything you already know about the ups and downs of this most challenging and rewarding job. When your friends and loved ones ask what you do every day, just give them this book to read.

If you are not a teacher, then you need to read this book to see what's really going on in our country's most troubled schools. It's all here -- the good, the bad, and the ugly.

5 out of 5 stars Amazingly accurate portrait of NYC's schools.......2004-10-25

I was eager to read this book, as Goodnough's NY Times series on the Teaching Fellows provided the impetus for my own leap into the program. I began teaching in Fall 2003 and can say that this book is amazingly accurate. While there have been a number of program changes (noted in the epilogue) the essential experience remains the same - the daily, even sometimes hourly, ups and downs of being a first year teacher with so little training is described in such exquisite detail that the book is, somewhat surprisingly, a page-turner.

              Book Description

In Everyday Cognition leading scholars in developmental psychology, cognitive science, and anthropology have joined forces to examine how thinking and cognitive development are influenced by social context. John Seely Brown, Michael Cole, Herbert P. Ginsburg, Patricia Greenfirld, Hugh Mehan, Sylvia Scribner, and Sheldon H. White, with the editors and others, examine the ways in which thinking occurs in the real world of home, school, and workplace, as well as in the laboratory. They stress the problem-solving nature of most everyday cognitive activity and the extent to which it is shaped by social interaction with others. Overall, the book represents the shift in developmental psychology from adherence to fixed Piagetian stages of development toward awareness of the relation between child and environment, emphasizing the context and situations in which children learn to become adults.

                    Book Description

Humble Work & Mad Wanderings is a brilliant photographic, social, and personal history by one of our most knowledgeable photographic historians, who shows himself to be one of our best story tellers as well. Inspired by images of individuals trying to survive while still holding on to their dignity, Appollo interweaves a poignant narrative that again and again rises to philosophy and poetry. Out of his narrative, one comes to many of the universal truths of poverty, truths that span cultures and time and which, following his analysis, can be seen in photograph after photograph. What Appollo finally produces is a moving social documentary about poverty on the streets, about police and power, and about middle class attitudes toward the destitute.

                      5 out of 5 stars Florida Butterflys.......2007-05-13

This is the best book I have purchased for butterfys. It has great pictures of the butterflys as well as the caterpillars.
It gives you all the information needed to get your own butterfly garden set up.

5 out of 5 stars When they say complete they mean it.......2005-09-19

I am just starting butterfly gardening and I found so much helpful information. On the other hand, my sister has been butterfly gardening for years, and still found the book helpful. It makes identification of butterflies and caterpillars easy and has many lavish illustrations of both the butterflies and the plants that attract them.

                      4 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2001-03-16

I have had this book for a year and I am always pulling it back out to help purchase butterfly plants and to ID catipillers and butterflys. Lots of excellent pictures of every stage of each Florida butterfly. Excellent lists of plants, both host and nectar. Great pictures of the plants. The only thing I have found missing is any info on when to expect the butterfly's in your garden.

                        Book Description

While some excellent identification guides help observers to name the species they find, there are no books about 'mothing.' This book fills this gap. There are sections on finding moths in the daytime and at night when they visit natural attractions such as sallow catkins and overripe blackberries. The responsible use of light traps is also covered. Most moths are easily bred in captivity, and their early stages are often fascinating. Successful techniques for finding and rearing caterpillars (almost a hobby in itself) are provided. Other chapters show how to attract moths to the garden, give expert hints on photographic techniques, and deal with the handling and presentation of scientific data.

However, this is no dry academic tome. Roy Leverton conveys his lifelong enthusiasm for moths in an immensely readable, easy-going style, while the text is liberally illustrated with line drawings and the author's own superb photographs of living moths.
