Time Stands Still: Muybridge and the Instantaneous Photography Movement
Phillip Prodger Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0195149645 |
Book Description
Eadweard Muybridge, one of the great pioneer-innovators of the 19th century, is a familiar figure to students of art history, photography, and cinema. Best known for the photographs of horses and other animals in motion that he made in the 1870s and '80s, Muybridge was the first person to use photography to freeze rapid action for analysis and study. He devised a method for photographing episodes of behavior using a series of cameras, producing some of the most famous sequential photographs ever made. These pictures, the first successful photographs of rapidly moving subjects, revolutionized expectations of what photography could reveal about the natural world, and ultimately led to the invention of the motion picture in the mid-1890s. Time Stands Still is the catalogue that accompanies a major exhibition celebrating Muybridge's fascinating work. Though the instantaneous photography movement stands as a crucial event in the progression of photography to motion pictures, this exhibition represents the first major organized treatment of the subject. Opening in spring 2003 at the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Center for Visual Arts at Stanford University and touring through 2004, it combines an examination of the artist's career in motion photography with a survey of early attempts to photograph moving subjects. Guest curator Phillip Prodger is the primary author of the catalogue, but the book also includes a valuable essay covering cinema's earliest experiments by Tom Gunning, an acknowledged expert on early film from the University of Chicago. The exhibition will display Muybridge's zoopraxiscope and other equipment, drawings, ephemera, and photographs made from the invention of photography in the 1830s to the end of Muybridge's career, which culminated with the publication of his encyclopedic work, Animal Locomotion, in 1887. The photographs and objects are drawn largely from the collection of the Cantor Center and are supplemented with a selection of stop-action photographs from other private and public collections. Among those represented will be the work of Talbot, Rejlander, Maray, Eakins, Edison, the Lumiere Freres, and others.Customer Reviews:

Ms. Moffett's First Year: Becoming a Teacher in America
Abby Goodnough Manufacturer: PublicAffairs ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 1586483803 |
Book Description
This "excellent" and "invaluable" account of one new teacher's experience in a Brooklyn elementary school classroom illuminates the complex dilemmas currently confounding American public education (The Washington Post)In the summer of 2000, Donna Moffett, a forty-five-year-old legal secretary, answered an ad for the New York City Teaching Fellows program, which sought to recruit "talented professionals" from other fields to teach in some of the city's worst schools. Seven weeks later she was in a first-grade classroom at P.S. 92 in Flatbush, Brooklyn, almost completely unprepared for what she was about to face.
Abby Goodnough, then a New York Times education reporter, followed Moffett through her first year as a teacher, and wrote an award-winning series of front-page articles that galvanized discussion nationwide. Ms. Moffett's First Year is the expansion of that series into a riveting book that explores the gulf between rhetoric and reality in today's urban schools. This is a provocative, often heartbreaking portrait of the inadequacy of good intentions and of the challenges of educating poor and immigrant populations. It is a story that anyone who cares about this country's children should know.

ASIN: 158348423X |
Book Description
In Everyday Cognition leading scholars in developmental psychology, cognitive science, and anthropology have joined forces to examine how thinking and cognitive development are influenced by social context. John Seely Brown, Michael Cole, Herbert P. Ginsburg, Patricia Greenfirld, Hugh Mehan, Sylvia Scribner, and Sheldon H. White, with the editors and others, examine the ways in which thinking occurs in the real world of home, school, and workplace, as well as in the laboratory. They stress the problem-solving nature of most everyday cognitive activity and the extent to which it is shaped by social interaction with others. Overall, the book represents the shift in developmental psychology from adherence to fixed Piagetian stages of development toward awareness of the relation between child and environment, emphasizing the context and situations in which children learn to become adults.

Ken Appollo Manufacturer: Carl Mautz Publishing ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 188769403X |
Book Description
Humble Work & Mad Wanderings is a brilliant photographic, social, and personal history by one of our most knowledgeable photographic historians, who shows himself to be one of our best story tellers as well. Inspired by images of individuals trying to survive while still holding on to their dignity, Appollo interweaves a poignant narrative that again and again rises to philosophy and poetry. Out of his narrative, one comes to many of the universal truths of poverty, truths that span cultures and time and which, following his analysis, can be seen in photograph after photograph. What Appollo finally produces is a moving social documentary about poverty on the streets, about police and power, and about middle class attitudes toward the destitute.

Enjoying Moths
Roy Leverton Manufacturer: Academic Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0856611247 |
Book Description
While some excellent identification guides help observers to name the species they find, there are no books about 'mothing.' This book fills this gap. There are sections on finding moths in the daytime and at night when they visit natural attractions such as sallow catkins and overripe blackberries. The responsible use of light traps is also covered. Most moths are easily bred in captivity, and their early stages are often fascinating. Successful techniques for finding and rearing caterpillars (almost a hobby in itself) are provided. Other chapters show how to attract moths to the garden, give expert hints on photographic techniques, and deal with the handling and presentation of scientific data. However, this is no dry academic tome. Roy Leverton conveys his lifelong enthusiasm for moths in an immensely readable, easy-going style, while the text is liberally illustrated with line drawings and the author's own superb photographs of living moths.
